“Hey, there you are,” Jason smiled as he turned a corner in the hospital to find Kelly and Kate walking to him. “I was trying to find you to make sure you had some breakfast.”
“We’re headed that way right now,” Kelly replied, smiling in return as he offered she and Kate an arm.
“Well, then allow me,” he nodded, leading them towards the cafeteria.
Kelly glanced at Kate curiously behind Jason’s back, but the taller girl shrugged in reply. She rolled her eyes, used to her brother’s odd behavior by now, and allowed him to place various breakfast items on her tray she had grabbed upon entering the cafeteria.
“This better not just be for me,” Kelly warned, eyeing the tray full of food, wearily.
“Of course it is, we have our own stuff,” Jason motioned to he and Kate’s trays.
“Are you trying to make me sick?”
He rolled his eyes as he pulled out his wallet to pay for the three of them, “Now…where to sit…ah…”
“Is it like genetically programmed in the two of you to be weird?” Kate asked as they followed Jason to a table.
“I’m starting to think it is,” Kelly replied as her older brother came to a stop.
“Oh, hey, look who’s here,” he smiled, and Kelly glanced over his shoulder to find her sister already sitting at the table.
“Jay…”
“Oh, well, looks like this table is full, come on, Kate, we’ll sit somewhere else,” Jason offered his arm back to her.
Kate mouthed an apology as she followed Jason to another table.
Kelly turned back to the table with a sigh.
“Hi,” Alyssa greeted carefully.
“Hi.”
“Sit…please?”
Kelly nodded, sitting down across from her.
“So, um…Jason and Kate really dated?” Alyssa questioned, watching his brother sit with the backup singer at a different table. “How in the world did he manage that?”
“She was going through a rough spot,” Kelly explained, watching as her sister’s eyes settled back on her.
“So, I, um…I heard you got to see Carrie,” Alyssa noted unsurely.
“I did,” Kelly nodded. “I got to spend most of the night with her.”
“Well, that’s…that’s good then,” she forced a smile. “How is she?”
“She seems to be doing ok.”
“Were you able to find out what’s wrong with her?”
Kelly shook her head, resting her chin in her hand as she poked at her eggs with a plastic fork, “She was too tired to talk much.”
“I’m sorry, I know…I know this must be hard on you.”
Kelly’s eyes flickered up to her, “What is this? What are you doing?”
“I’m trying to be supportive and to be here for you,” she nodded nervously. “Am I not doing it right?”
“Why? Why are you trying to be supportive? I know how you feel about this.”
“Yea, but you’re my baby sister,” Alyssa pointed out, her eyes softening.
Kelly bit her bottom lip.
“And I…I know you’re struggling, and I know you’re hurting, and I…” she reached out, cradling the shorter girl’s cheek softly. “I just want to be here for you.”
“And after?”
“After what?”
“After we get through this. After Care gets better, and I’m not hurting anymore. Where are you going to be then?”
“I’m always going to be here for you,” Alyssa replied firmly.
“But you…you’re…”
“Maybe I just needed to have my eyes opened,” she suggested. “I know you, Kellbell. I know you are such a good person, and I know you have the most beautiful heart I’ve ever seen of anyone, and I’ve seen how much you care for that girl over the past few days, and I just…I would never tell you to go against your heart because like I said it’s amazing, and you’re amazing, and you’re my baby sister, and I just want you to be happy.”
“I really needed to hear you say that,” Kelly admitted, closing her eyes against the burning tears that had formed. “I’m sorry I’ve been so short with you.”
“No, it’s ok, I needed that. When I got here, I didn’t know what I was going to find, and I needed you to show me how much this girl means to you.”
“So you’re ok with this?” Kelly asked as she opened her eyes to look at her.
Alyssa nodded.
“You know, I’m not asking you to plan our wedding or anything,” she smiled at the slight hesitance in the other girl.
“I know,” Alyssa gave a light laugh. “It’s just going to take some getting used to…my sister’s in love with a girl…now that wasn’t so hard to say…see, I can get used to this.”
“You always were very type A,” Kelly teased as Alyssa pulled her hand back.

Kelly glanced up as Kate dealt another hand of cards. She caught Shanna’s eye as the eldest Underwood daughter walked across the waiting room, and she gave a curt nod.
“W-Who’s that?” Alyssa asked as she picked up her cards.
“It’s ok to ask questions,” Kelly smiled, causing her sister to blush. “And that’s one of Carrie’s sisters. She’s the one that took it upon herself to inform her entire family of Carrie and I’s relationship.”
“So we don’t like her?”
“She’s also the one that allowed you to have time with Carrie last night,” Kate reminded.
“Yea, only she didn’t have the balls to do it outright and had to sneak her way around it…” Kelly frowned.
Kate kicked her under the small table they had found and drug their way to use for their game.
“Ouch,” Kelly narrowed her eyes at her.
Kate gave her a pointed look.
“I’m sorry, but not everybody can be as nice and compassionate as you are.”
Kate shook her head, “At least give her a little break…for you and Carrie’s sake. Right now, she’s the only one that’s going to be able to give you two time together.”
Kelly grumbled.
“You know I’m right.”
“Yea, yea,” Kelly rolled her eyes, making Kate giggle.
“So she…Carrie’s sister…” Alyssa began.
“Shanna,” Kelly offered.
“So Shanna knew about you and Carrie before this?”
“Yea, she had come visit Care at the beginning of the summer, and Care told her then.”
Alyssa nodded, looking slightly hurt.
Kelly sighed, putting her cards down, “I’m sorry, I was just afraid of telling you. I didn’t even know how to bring it up.”
“I know, it’s ok,” she assured, giving her arm a slight squeeze. “I haven’t exactly given you reason in the past for you not to be scared, but you know, people can change, right? So…that’s what I’m trying to do.”
“Would you maybe wanna meet her? Carrie, that is?”
“I don’t know, Kellbell…I mean, right now you hardly get to see her as it is, and I don’t want to take away from that, and I…”
“Need some time?”
“Baby steps,” Alyssa nodded.
Kelly smiled, “I can do baby steps.”
Alyssa laughed, squeezing her shoulder affectionately, “Alright then, so who’s ready to get their ass kicked?”
“Clarksons, man…” Kate shook her head as she watched the pair of them.
