“When everything feels like the movies,
Yea, you bleed just to know you're alive.”

“What do you think?” Kelly asked as she sat in the waiting room, using a second chair as a foot rest.
“I think Ashley can do way better,” Kate shook her head as they watched the makeup artist flirt with a male nurse. “He’s seriously ugly.”
“I know, right?” Kelly laughed.
“Maybe she’s getting desperate from being cooped up in this hospital for so long.”
“You know…y’all really don’t have to be here.”
Kate reached over, squeezing her hand, “Shut up.”
Kelly smiled, stretching, “What about you?”
“What about me?”
“Broken any more hearts since you dumped my brother?”
Kate blushed, “KC…”
“Come on, you know I’m just teasing,” Kelly ruffled her hair playfully. “But seriously, though, any guy caught your eye lately?”
“Yea, because I would totally be able to meet a guy without you finding out,” Kate rolled her eyes.
“Hey, we work together, and you’ve been pretty much living at my house lately, so it’s not my fault that I know all your business.”
“You go looking for my business,” Kate countered teasingly. “You’re worse with me than Jason is with you.”
“Hey, if I don’t know the name, phone number, address, and medical history of the guy you’re dating, then how am I supposed to find them to kick their ass if they break your heart?”
“See what I mean?”
“Aw, come on, Kate, you know I just do it cause I love you.”
Kate rolled her eyes again as she went back to watching Ashley hit on the nurse.
“Kate…Kate…” Kelly pushed herself up, leaning towards her. “You know you love me too. Come on, you know you do. Kate…smile Kate…Katie…”
Kate’s face paled.
“Oh God, I’m so sorry,” Kelly shook her head. “I wasn’t thinking. I didn’t mean to call you…have you um, have you heard from her lately?”
“No,” she replied softly, shaking her head.
“Kate…” Kelly bit her bottom lip, knowing she had screwed up. “I’m sorry,” she offered when Kate turned to her.
Kate leaned over, pressing their foreheads together lightly. She smiled as Kelly wrinkled her nose playfully, “Crazy.”
Kelly nodded as they sat back in their chairs, “You ok?”
“Of course,” her smile became forced.
“Kate.”
“I’m fine,” she assured as Kelly took her hand in both of her own.
“You know I’m here if you want to talk. What are you thinking right now?”
“I’m thinking that your sister better hurry back with that food because these hospital fumes on an empty stomach seem to be turning your brain to mush.”
“Oh whatever, you are way mushier than me,” Kelly replied, tossing her hand aside. “I’m just trying to return the favor.”
“You’re just trying to distract yourself,” Kate countered.
Kelly frowned, “I don’t like you.”
“I love you too.”
Kelly chuckled, linking their arms together, trying to forget Kate’s brief reminder of why they were where they were. “Maybe that’s Ashley’s problem too: the hospital smell. Maybe it’s impairing her guy judgement.”
“It has to be,” Kate shook her head as the makeup artist laughed loudly at something the guy had said.
“Excuse me,” a careful voice interrupted.
Kelly felt her stomach lurch. She turned to find Carrie’s mother standing beside her, “Yes?”
“I believe we need to talk,” she explained.
“I don’t believe I have anything to say to you,” Kelly replied, as Kate’s arm tightened around her own.
“Oh, I’m sure you do.”
Kelly’s fist clenched.
“Temper,” Kate warned in a whisper. “We’re in public.”
Kelly swallowed hard, motioning to the chair next to her with her free arm, “Please…have a seat.”
“I didn’t mean to become best friends, I just meant not to curse her out…” Kate mumbled.
“Do you mind?” Carrie’s mother glanced at her around Kelly.
Kate narrowed her eyes at the elderly woman.
“Temper,” Kelly couldn’t help but smile. “You’ve been spending way too much time with me lately.”
Carrie’s mother snorted.
“Hey…” Kelly began softly, sneaking a peek at Carrie’s mom before turning back to Kate. “Why don’t you go give Alyssa a call and see what’s taking her so long? I’m starving.”
Kate smiled, nodding, “Sure thing.”
Kelly couldn’t help but feel guilty for lying as the taller singer stood, but she knew Kate would be thrilled at the mention of her having her appetite back.
“I’ll just be over there if you need,” she motioned to the corner of the waiting room.
Kelly nodded, “Thanks, girlie.”
“So…” Carrie’s mother cleared her throat.
Kelly resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
“Who’s the model?”
“Huh?” Kelly turned to her confusedly.
“Your friend,” she motioned to where Kate was now standing, talking on the phone.
“Oh, yea, she’s tall, right?”
“And pretty.”
“Gorgeous,” Kelly nodded, watching as Carrie’s mother studied Kate closely, something clearly on her mind. She could feel herself growing protective over the younger singer, the familiarity of it giving her a sense of relief. It had been a while since she had known exactly how to feel about something. “Did you need something?”
“She a friend of yours?”
“Obviously.”
“Does she have a name?”
“Yes, but it really isn’t any of your business,” Kelly pointed out, not wanting to drag Kate anymore into the middle of everything than she already had.
“You’re very fond of her.”
“Our relationship isn’t any of your business either.”
“Your relationship?”
Kelly took a deep breath, “What do you want? Just spit it out because we both know you don’t want to be sitting by me just as much as I don’t want you here.”
“I know you spent the night with my daughter,” she replied calmly.
“I did,” Kelly nodded. “And you have no idea how good it felt to spend the night in her arms again.”
Her face reddened, “Stay away from her. If you want what’s best for her, then you would stay away.”
“I’m not some kid you can manipulate. I do want what’s best for her, and I know that I’m it.”
“A little full of yourself, aren’t you?”
Kelly shook her head, “No, I just know that her smiles are never as full as they are when she’s with me, and that’s just a fact.”
“Happiness isn’t everything.”
“Love is.”
“Love and lust are two different things.”
“I know,” Kelly found herself grinning at the opportunity to cause the other woman just an ounce of the hurt she had been made to feel over the past few days. “I know there’s a difference. That’s why I said love, but don’t worry, there’s plenty of lust too. Your daughter…she’s definitely something special. You don’t normally find an appetite or skill level like hers on someone as inexperienced as she was when I first met her.”
Mrs. Underwood’s face was nearly purple, “Now you listen to me, you will never be seeing my daughter again, do you understand? And you sure as hell aren’t going to ever touch her again.”
“You can’t stop me,” Kelly smiled, as she started to truly believe that statement for the first time. “I saw Care. She’s getting stronger. She knows that you lied to her about my being here, and she’s not going to let you keep me from her.”
“I can move her out of here and into private care.”
“You are not moving her out of here until she is completely healthy,” Kelly tensed.
“Who’s going to stop me? I’m her mother.”
“The doctor isn’t going to release her,” Kelly shook her head knowingly.
“I can always get a different doctor for her.”
Kelly stood up, “I swear to God if you cause any type of harm to her or her recovery--” She was cut off at the feeling of a firm arm around her stomach.
“Just walk away,” Kate urged gently. “Don’t give her any excuse to have you kicked out of here.”
“But she--”
“She’s all talk. She’s just scared.”
Kelly turned back to the older woman, noticing the fear in her eyes for the first time.
“You must be Kate,” Carrie’s mother smiled.
“How do you know her name?” Kelly asked through clenched teeth as she struggled against Kate’s hold to step towards her.
“I simply asked my daughter who the pretty blonde was I’ve seen you all over the past couple days…although maybe I should’ve said the gorgeous blonde.”
“I swear,” Kelly warned, pointing her finger at her.
“Ok, that’s enough,” Kate shook her head.
Kelly felt herself being drug backwards and out of the waiting room.
Kate didn’t stop until they were outside, the rain coming down steadily on top of them.
“What the hell?” Kelly glared up at her, breathing heavily.
“You need to calm down,” Kate replied firmly.
“I was just defending you.”
“You’ve gotta stop doing this. You can’t let people get to you like that, Kelly. First Alex’s mom, and now Carrie’s. You can’t let them see your temper. Not when they can use it against you.”
Kelly’s head dropped. She took several deep breaths, taking in the feeling of the cool rain against her skin.
“I’m sorry,” Kate sighed, rubbing her arm comfortingly. “I just hate seeing you get hurt, you know?”
Kelly nodded, pulling her into a hug.
“Did Carrie’s mom say anything about how she was doing?”
“Of course not,” Kelly sniffed back tears as Kate rubbed her back.
“I can try her sisters if you want?”
“I don’t want you to be in the middle of this,” Kelly shook her head, pulling back.
“It’s a little late for that,” Kate smiled.
“What are you two idiots doing?”
Kelly and Kate turned to find Alyssa walking towards them with an umbrella in one hand and a bag of take-out in the other, “Do y’all think just because you’re at a hospital that it’s ok for you to catch pneumonia? Get your butts inside and dry off.”
Kelly smiled, pulling her sister into a tight hug as she took the bag of food from her.
“Hey, um, KC…” Kate began as the three of them made their way back into the hospital.
“Yea?”
“Why did Carrie’s mom call me gorgeous?”
Kelly laughed, “Because I’m pretty sure she’s going to try and convince Care that you and I are screwing.”
“Oh…well, ok, then, I was just wondering,” she shrugged.
“I’m never leaving you two alone again,” Alyssa shook her head.
Kelly swallowed hard, feeling more tears forming.
“Kelly?” her sister turned to her worriedly. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m sorry,” she shook her head. “I just…this is all so messed up, and I…I’m tired. I just need a nap.”
“Ok, well, it’s ok,” Alyssa assured. “Why don’t we go home for a little bit?”
“I can’t. What if Care asks for me?”
Alyssa looked at Kate helplessly.
“Her mom’s not going anywhere anytime soon,” Kate replied. “And I saw Carrie this morning…I don’t think she’s quite ready to put up a fight. You’re good for the afternoon.”
“You’re sure?” Kelly looked up at her with tears rolling down her cheeks.
Kate nodded, “Positive.”
“Ok…” she took a shaky breath. “Sleeping in my own bed does sound really good…”
“Good, then it’s settled,” Alyssa nodded, pulling Kelly closer to her side and under the umbrella as the three turned back around and headed outside once more.
“Kate…”
“You can hate me for the rest of my life if I’m wrong,” she replied quickly to keep the Texan from changing her mind.
