You Can’t Control Destiny – Chapter 16
For the next two weeks Natalie worked harder than ever. Chelsea watched in amazement as Natalie did all she could to finish her part of the movie. She attacked her job with a new zest, complaining when the director called it a day. When she wasn’t on set she was in her dressing room, her cell phone stuck to her ear. Chelsea found it amusing to hear Natalie checking constantly on Hayden’s condition even after he had been released from the hospital and was resting at his parents’ home.
One afternoon an hour after Natalie had returned to the set, her cell phone rang. Chelsea flicked it a knowing look and picked it up, catching a quick peek at the number.
“Hello, Hayden,” Chelsea answered, smiling indulgently. “She’s on the set.”
Hayden laughed at Chelsea’s pointed reminder. “Yes, I know,” he replied, “but she calls almost every hour so I thought I’d beat her to it this time and give you my medical update.”
Chelsea, who had just lifted a bottle of water to her lips, choked as it started down her throat then went spraying across the room. Once she quit coughing and gagging Hayden could hear her peels of laughter.
“Let me rephrase that,” he continued trying to make her laugh again. “I’m reporting my un-medical condition.” Chelsea fell apart again. Both found it amusing that Natalie played doctor to him from another province. No matter how many times he insisted he was perfectly fine she still seemed to believe otherwise.
“You are too much!” Chelsea howled, her stomach hurting from laughing so hard.
Hayden’s grin sounded in his voice. “Yea, but when you tell her where I went you’re going to have to bear the brunt of it and calm her down for me.”
Immediately suspicion mounted and Chelsea’s eyes narrowed. “What do you mean? Just where are you going?”
Silence charged down the line for a long moment before he confessed. “I’m going to play a little hockey.”
“No, no, no!” Chelsea examined, her eyes full of horror. “Don’t you dare! Do you hear me? Don’t you dare! Oh great, just great! How could you do this to me?! Wait till she calls you back and tell her yourself! You’re leaving me to tell her? That is so low!”
Hayden chuckled unrepentantly. “Yes, I know, but I’m heading out now and can’t wait for her to come off set. Chelsea, I am perfectly fine and I have to get back to regular life. There’s no reason not to now. I know she’s going to have a fit, but she’ll have to deal with it and get over it. I think she thinks I’ll go out there and get hurt even though she won’t admit it. I don’t want her to overly worry so tell her I wore all my gear, including a helmet. Ok?”
“All right, but you owe me big time, mister,” Chelsea grumbled not looking forward to delivering the news to her friend. “And for the record I am not saving your skin when she gets hold of you later.”
“Understood,” he answered and added with mischief, “I know how to handle her. Bye!”
Chelsea rang off and threw the phone a baleful glare. “Yea, I just bet you do.”
Later, when Natalie returned to the dressing room, Chelsea didn’t wait but plunged right in, pushed the words out as fast as she could, then waited apprehensively for it to register with her. The moment it dawned on Natalie Chelsea back pedaled away from her quickly. But instead of the red fit of anger, fear blossomed over Natalie’s face and she turned a ghostly white. Then she started to shake.
Bewildered, Chelsea reached for her and pushed her into a chair, shoving Natalie’s head between her knees. Several long moments later Natalie sat up, a little color back in her cheeks.
“Natalie?” Chelsea questioned, drawing attention to her. “Are you Ok?”
Natalie shook her head. “Is he crazy?” her voice quivered. “That’s how he almost killed himself in the first place!”
Chelsea knelt beside Natalie and chafed her cold fingers. “He’ll call you when he gets back,” she promised then sighed with concern. “You’ve got to stop this, Nat. How many times does he have to tell you the doctor gave him a clean bill of health before you’ll believe him?”
Natalie pulled her hands from Chelsea’s and crossed her arms. “When I see him,” Natalie answered, a stubborn set to her jaw.
Chelsea stood and threw her arms up. “Well, I delivered his message,” she complained, “and I yelled at him, but it did no good. Take it up with him when he calls.”
“I will.” The words chilled the room. Chelsea spun and fastened sympathetic eyes on her.
“He’s alive, Nat,” she said gently. “He’s not going to die.”
Natalie pulled the telltale look off her face and buried it deep inside. “I know,” she answered briskly, getting up and going to the refrigerator for some juice, “but I’m still going to kill him.”
It looked and sounded like the feisty Natalie she knew and loved, but Chelsea had seen the naked fear stamped across those delicate features. She was terrified and not going to admit it. That worried Chelsea more than if Natalie had gotten angry. If Hayden had been in targeting range she would’ve gladly kicked his cute, tight butt!
A few hours later the phone rang and Chelsea grabbed it. Relief flowed through her at the sound of Hayden’s cheerful hello. Quickly and succinctly she informed him of Natalie’s reaction from the near fainting to the sudden denial of fear. While she couldn’t see him she heard his worried murmur and could almost see him raking a hand through his hair.
Just then the door opened and a wan faced Natalie appeared. Silently, Chelsea held out the phone and placed it in Natalie’s hand then quietly left the room.
“Hayden?” Natalie breathed hesitantly into the phone.
“Hmm?”
“Are you nuts?” She growled at him. “Are you completely insane? Do I have to come over there and babysit you?”
Natalie rattled off the angry outburst but Hayden detected a note of immense relief in her voice. “No, I’m not nuts or insane,” he explained calmly. “The doctor said I could and if anyone should know he should. And, baby, if you want to come over here and babysit me that’s fine by me.” She shivered at the name ‘baby’ and snorted at his explanation but he heard the smile he’d teased out of her. “I’m not a daredevil, Nat. I don’t take foolish chances. My brother was there and he was almost as bad as you!” He paused and let her digest the information. “But he saw, just like you’ll see, I am completely well. I finally got to have some fun and exercise. I needed to get out of the house. I’ve been going stir crazy! Now…tell me what time your flight arrives tomorrow.”
Natalie gave him the information, adding, “I can’t wait to see you tomorrow.”
“Good. I can’t wait to see me, either.”
Natalie could not stay upset with him any longer and burst out laughing, her eyes alight with mirth. Hayden laughed with her and they changed the subject and moved on.
The next night, Tove met Natalie at the airport again. Hayden had argued about coming instead but Tove convinced him reporters would be all over them once they spotted Natalie and him and they’d have had trouble getting out of the airport. Tove and Natalie talked very easily on the drive from the airport, Tove reassuring Natalie of Hayden’s state of health before she could even ask.
Tove pulled into his parents’ garage and took Natalie’s suitcase, leading the way. They had gotten no further than the hall when Hayden appeared, eyes riveted on Natalie. The bruise on his face was a faded yellowish-brown and his lip was no longer swollen. Tove edged passed him, smirking once he was sure they couldn’t see it.
Natalie stood suddenly shy, uncertain, and awkward. Hayden marveled at that, knowing that was how he normally would have been, but surprisingly he wasn’t. Instead he smiled widely at her and took her into his arms. They hugged one another tightly, Natalie closing her eyes to gratefully absorb the knowledge that he was really fine.
“C’mon,” Hayden caught her hand and pulled her along.
That weekend turned into one of many for Natalie. Very quickly she settled comfortably in with Hayden’s family, talking just as easily with Alie or his sisters in the kitchen preparing dinner as she did with David in front of the TV. She and Hayden argued politics, religion, and current events with Hayden constantly keeping her on her toes, played games and watched TV, Natalie curled under Hayden’s arm or her hand clasped in his. He took her to a few Toronto Maple Leafs’ games then good-naturedly complained to his family that he’d created a monster. Surreptitiously, Hayden’s family watched them and grinned at one another but never said a word.
On one of those weekends Hayden sat down at the piano playing one jazz tune after another. Hejsa and Natalie followed the music and found him, Natalie’s eyes drinking in his familiar posture, the tilt of his head, the way his hair curled on the nape of his neck.
As he finished a song, Hejsa urged, “Play that one Kaylen always says reminds her of the ocean.”
“Yes,” Kaylen poked her head in the doorway, “that tropical breezy one.”
No one else noticed Hayden stiffen, but the moment he froze Natalie knew just what piece they were referring Sh She heard him mutter unintelligibly under his breath and she stepped close enough to see his fingers on the keys. “Oh, yes, Hayden,” she said all innocence, “that must be a wonderful piece. Please, play it.”
Damn, he swore to himself seeing no way out of it. Shutting his eyes he let his fingers move over the keys. Perfect, sharp images of Natalie sittin the the piano bench between his legs crystallized before him. He could almost smell the sunscreen on her skin, feel her small breasts in his hands, and taste her tongue on his… He bit back a groan as he began to harden fast.
A few musical notes plunked into his ear and his eyes flew open to see Natalie’s finger hitting the keys, remembering the order he taught her. For one hot moment their eyes met as she leaned over his shoulder both sharing the memory. Swallowing, Natalie looked back down at the keys, her heart thumping in her ears. Hayden turned his attention to the keyboard also, very aware of his sisters standing behind them.
“That was lovely,” Kaylen sighed when it ended. “And, you! I didn’t know you could play!”
Natalie reddened and tried to act nonchalant. “Oh, I can’t play. Hayden taught me how to do that.” Their eyes briefly met again full of hunger and desire. Then Hayden’s mom and dad swept into the room asking for another song and the spell was broken. For the moment.
Both were doing supporting roles in movies for the month of April. Hayden jetted off to Los Angeles and Natalie got to stay in New York City. During the month they talked to one another every day, sometimes about nothing at all. Hayden teased her flirtatiously but Natalie noticed he never went beyond that. While he had hugged her, held her hand, and even kissed her cheek he had kept himself back from anything further. The longer it went on the more she found herself wondering about it her body getting frustrated. She had even caught herself staring at his mouth and missing what Tove had said to her, then reddening when she realized what she had been doing.
Natalie’s movie finished a few days before Hayden’s and she spent the time cleaning her apartment and visiting friends and her parents. Her mother remarked how tired she looked and Natalie went to extra pains to reassure her that she was just fine. She didn’t tell her about the nightmares she was having over and over. They were all different but ended the same way: Hayden dying and she not able to do a thing about it. It got to the point she hated to go to sleep at night and not wanting to upset Hayden she kept it to herself certain they would eventually pass.
It was the end of April and spring had a sure foothold. Promising herself a day of rest and relaxation she had lunch with her mother, a couple hours of shopping with Chelsea and some friends and then went home and opened her windows to the spring afternoon.
Even in the city birds sang and the air had its own special scent announcing warmer and longer days. As she sat in her living room she sorted through pictures smiling to herself when she came across Hayden’s face from four years earlier. It dawned on her that four years ago at this time she had first met him at Skywalker Ranch. A smile stretched across her full lips as she remembered how nervous he had been. But once they had begun the screen test he had been completely immersed in the work and very professional. He had unnerved her when he’d knelt in front of her and as Anakin, emphasized the line ‘I am grown up.’” His blue eyes bore into hers and her breath hitched in her throat. She had almost forgotten her next line as he’d smiled at her completing the image in her mind. There had been no doubt at that moment that he was the real Anakin. He had her so frazzled by his performance that she’d practically jumped up and ran from the set at every opportunity to put distance between them, then ran back to see what would unfold between their characters next.
Smiling, Natalie laid her head back in the overstuffed chair and curled her bare legs under her, the warm air lazily encircling the room. The photos drifted from her fingers and into her lap as her eyes closed with a sigh. Hayden would be home soon and maybe she could make a little more sense of things.
Heart pounding, bathed in sweat, Natalie sprang out of sleep, a scream strangling her throat. Blindly, she groped for the phone punching numbers in. Her clammy hands hit a wrong number and she redialed. On the third try there was a pause then a ring as the call connected. Natalie attempted to stand but her legs refused to work. When she heard the third ring she chanted ‘answer’ over and over.
“Hello?” A husky voice danced into her ear. Stunned, Natalie blinked rapidly and tried to speak, but her throat still closed in terror. After a long pause she heard, “Hello? Anyone there?” Another long pause and then sound emerged from her.
“H…Hayden?” Natalie started shaking violently.
“Natalie?” Hayden’s voice registered surprise. “I was just getting ready to call you! I got in earlier than I expected. How’d you know to find me at my parents’ house?”
No answer returned to him and his brows drew down in confusion. “Natalie? What is it?” His voice quieted, his heart banging fearfully against his ribs.
“Y…you’re all right,” Natalie’s voice replied weakly.
“Natalie, what’s wrong?” Hayden sat down, all attention funneled to her.
Natalie tried to steady herself as the last remnants of the nightmare tore at her senses. “I…I…fell asleep and must’ve had another nightmare,” she answered, pushing the damp tendrils of hair off her face.
“What kind of nightmare? And what do you mean ‘another’ one?”
“Your plane went down.” Hayden heard her voice start to rise in panic. “You never made it b…back.”
Deeply, Hayden breathed in and started piecing her words together. “It was just a dream, Natalie,” he soothed, alarmed at her voice. “I’m Ok.”
“I can’t even go to sleep anymore!” she suddenly cried out. “I’m afraid to close my eyes because you’re always…”
Shocked at her outburst, Natalie’s voice trailed off. Hayden’s blue eyes widened and he stood up. “Are all your nightmares about things happening to me?”
A noise that sounded suspiciously like a sniffle echoed over the line. “Natalie. Tell me.”
“Yes,” she answered, her voice tight with splintering control. “That day when I saw the news and they said you m…might not make it…and I thought I’d n…never see you again or g…get to t…tell you how I…” Her teeth were chattering so badly she couldn’t finish.
“It’s all right, baby,” he crooned. “It’s all righ Lon Long fingers raked through his hair. “This has been going on for two months? Why didn’t you tell me?” Silence. “Nat?”
“I thought you were going to d…d…”
“Natalie.”
Suddenly Natalie bolted upright, her hand halting any more words from her mouth. He said her name again, more intently this time. “I’m sorry,” she rushed out. “I just woke up from a bad dream. I’m all right now. I’ve got to go. I’ll c…call you later.”
“Natalie! Don’t hang up!”
The line went dead and Hayden shut his eyes and swore under his breath. Stubborn witch. He punched her number. No answer. He tried her cell phone. Same. He ran to the steps and yelled at the top of his voice. “MOM!” No answer. “MOM! MOM!”
Alie hurried to the bottom of the steps and answered her son before he could yell any louder. “What is it? You’re going to wake the dead shouting like that!”
Hayden grimaced at her choice of words. “I need a huge favor.”
The sun made its way along the sky blissfully oblivious to the joy and pains of the mortals on Earth. After another day it was edging its way closer to setting, night anxiously waiting in the wings.
Natalie sat in the overstuffed chair, curled into a tight ball. A few hours had passed since her call to Hayden, but she knew no recollection of time. Sightlessly, she stared, refusing to answer the phone. At first it rang every couple of minutes but eventually stopped. Huddled in the chair her mind replayed all the nightmares, struggling to sen sense of it all. Finally her memories strayed to Australia…and Hawaii. She gasped, her eyes wide with astonishment as a realization seized her and shook her none too gently. There was no room left for her to scrunch into a tighter ball though she wished she could. Unfortunately her thoughts wandered back around to the awful day she found out about his accident. A groan escaped her. She was going to have to call him back soon, but she had to somehow pull herself together. He would be relentless in extracting information from her.
The phone shattered the silence in the room with its shrill bell. Listless, her eyes watched it, her body undecided about answering it yet or not. On the third ring her answering machine picked it up. The drone of her voice asked the caller to leave a message after the beep and she waited for whomever it was to leave their message and return the room to silence.
After the beep, there was a brief pause and Natalie felt the hairs on the back of her neck rise in sick anticipation.
“Natalie, I know you’re there. Please pick up the phone.”
Hayden’s voice filled the room and Natalie jumped, moving for the first time in hours. Slowly she shuffled towards the phone, staring at it but not picking it up.
“Ok, Nat,” Hayden sighed, “if you’re not going to answer at least go to your window and look down. I am standing right outside your building and I’m not going away. I’ll camp out here all night if I have to.”
Stunned, Natalie turned towards the window and stepped over to it. Peeking out she saw Hayden several stories below. “Hello, Pretty Eyes,” he greeted over the answering machine. “Now, tell your doorman to let me up. I am sure you don’t want me climbing up the front of your building…it’s too dangerous.”
A frission of fear raced her to the phone and she snatched it from its cradle. “Don’t you dare try to climb this building!” She shouted into the receiver.
Hayden tilted his head back to look at where she’d been standing moments ago. She can’t really think I’d even try something that stupid, can she? He asked himself. “Then let me in,” he said, his voice gentle, soft, and deep, “because one way or another I’m coming to you whether you like it or not.”
By the time Hayden reached Natalie’s apartment her heart was pumping furiously. Nerves frayed into thin strands, every movement, every breath magnifying painful tingles up her arms and into her chest. Even expecting she she jumped when he knocked on the door. Dazed, she opened the door staring at him in mute disbelief. He had flown to her after she had hung up on him. He had flown from LA to Toronto and then got back on a plane just for her?
He was so handsome standing there with all that worry etched in his forehead it hurt to look at him. Blonde hair tousled into disarray, blue eyes intense, mouth set in a determined line he backed her into the room as he came through the door full of purpose. So distraught, she missed the way his eyes ate up the sight of her, the concern for her overshadowing all else. In a soft, long-sleeved, collarless white shirt and jeans so old they were thin and velvety smooth he closed the door behind him, shutting them away from the rest of the world and its prying eyes.
No words could find their way out of her body and she stared at Hayden standing before her waiting for her to speak. When it was obvious she fumbled for words, her glance dipped and darted away from him and he took up the slack.
“Why did you hang up on me?” Hayden asked carefully. He itched to reach for her but restrained the impulse. “Was it because of the nightmares?” In fascination he watched her eyes grow dewy with tears and cling helplessly to his. Worried, he saw her tremble, his eyes drifting down to her feet as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other. In the dimming twilight a light winked on her ankle. The bracelet. His mouth dropped in surprise and his eyes jerked back to hers, his heart careening in his chest.
“Ever since that day I keep dreaming,” tears clogged Natalie’s throat. “I can’t close my eyes anymore without seeing you in some horrible accident. When I thought I might never see you again…” Natalie licked her dry lips unable to halt the words bubbling up and spilling out of her, “…that I would never get the chance to make things right, tell you how I really feel…”
In one step Hayden reached her, a hand on each side of her face hauling her close, effectively stopping her words by sealing his mouth over hers. Natalie muffled a cry against him, slid her arms around his neck and drew herself onto her tiptoes. She welcomed his lips crushing hers, more alive now than she had been in months. The warmth of his body permeated her chilled flesh, the breath of his mouth breathing life into her.
Holding her close to him Hayden broke the kiss and murmured into her hair, “Natalie, Natalie, what am I going to do with you?”
“Take me to bed, Hayden,” Natalie whispered brokenly into his shoulder. “Make love to me. Touch my soul… I’ve missed you so much!”
A wave of longing almost buckled his legs as he swept her into his arms looking around for the bedroom doorway. Finding it he strode into the room laying her gently down onto the mattress and following her, covering her with the solid security of his body.
With a sigh full of release, Natalie’s mouth opened under his giving him unrestricted access to her. Tremors racked hedy ady as his tongue slid against hers igniting a conflagration throughout her body. The butterflies in her stomach broke from their cocoons fluttering wildly about dipping, soaring, and spinning. A heavy beat pulsed between her legs, throbbing with need. Greedy hands grabbed at him pulling him over her and into the cradle of her hips.
As Hayden settled ben hen her legs Natalie whimpered into his mouth when his hardness pressed against her. Dizzily he left her lips, trailing down her neck caressing, biting, and sucking. The out of control sensations pummeled him. He just wanted to plunge into her and explode and be done with this agony then start slowly all over again and take his time reacquainting himself with every sweet inch of her. But there was more going on here. Waves of desperation flowed from her breaking over him, the cobwebs of nightmares still clinging in the misty corners of her mind. Moving up he kissed her slow and deep, sliding his lips over hers, running his tongue over her lush, bottom lip. In response her lips clung to his feeding off the gentle suction.
He pulled away kissing the corner of her mouth. Natalie’s eyes fluttered open to stare into his serious blue gaze. Passionate light reached deep into her as his thumb smoothed across her lips. Unsmiling, he stared, just stared into her. His hand trailed along her neck and down her side, slipping under the hem of her top before gliding back up until it cupped her breast. Not once did his eyes leave hers. The marauding hand slid over her breast, his fingers finding the taut nipple and gently began to caress. The electric blue gaze held hers as the tactile exploration set off a thousand currents along a line connecting her breast to her sex. She wanted to close her eyes to the voluptuous emotions but couldn’t tear her eyes from his. His thumb rolled the nipple, shooting dazzling sparks through her.
At a gradual pace his face lowered, his eyes holding hers steady, his thumb moving lazily against her. His name whispered from her lips just as his face blurred too close to see it clearly. Only then did he allow her eyes to close, his mouth brushing hers, then possessing. Fingers tunneled into his hair, her hips grinding small circles against him. The delicious torture extracted a low, aroused moan from him, his mouth bruising hers a moment before he severed the contact and surged to his knees. Breathless and panting she lay invitingly below him. Long fingers made quick work of his shirt and dropped it off the side of the bed then skimmed g thg the bottom of hers easing it away, revng tng the smooth, creamy skin and tight, aroused nipples. Natalie’s arms reached for him and he gladly returned to her savoring the contact of her skin against his. Hands glided hungrily along his back and fingers dug sharply into his shoulders when his wet tongue circled a nipple and then drew it into his mouth suckling with insatiable desire.
A shaky cry jerked from Natalie and her body thrashed against his. Hayden’s mouth trailed to her other breast treating it to the same ministrations. Lights sparkled behind her eyelids, tears gushing into her eyes. The sob choked her and Hayden lifted his head, his own eyes heavy with wanting. Tenderly a hand caressed her cheek, his lips soothing hers, quieting her out of control emotions a little.
“All of you,” Natalie whispered against his lips. Hayden eased back to meet her eyes. “I want all of you.”
Overwhelmed with emotion he swallowed hard and nodded then brushed her lips. He eased her shorts and underwear away, his hand brushing against the gold chain at her ankle. In a gentle grip his fingers encircled her ankle, a tremor of feeling shaking him as he looked at the chain.
Quietly he stood and divested himself of the rest of his clothes and scooted back onto the bed. A gentle tug pulled her up. Hayden sat almost cross-legged and clutching her waist lifted her onto his lap, wrapping her legs behind him. Natalie’s breath caught in her throat as she moved her body carefully taking his hard shaft into her.
So much time apart had not exaggerated the sensation of being joined together as one. She was hot, wet, and tight, honeyed sweetness, perfectly fitted to him, her inner muscles squeezing him to her. Like this her eyes could look straight across to him, her mouth in line with his. Sitting against him pushed her sensitive nub against his pelvic bone, angled his rock-hard penis against the front wall of her vagina rubbing over a ridged circle.
Natalie’s arms wrapped around Hayden’s neck as she moved experimentally against him. Who groaned first didn’t matter, their breathing stalled and they winced at the almost too tortuous sensations spiraling upwards through their bodies from the point of contact. Her eyes fastened to his they began to move hypnotically, concentrating on each other.
The undulations against him sent shivers scudding across his shoulder blades where her fingers stroked in time. Now she reached into him gazing into his eyes uncovering hidden secrets, opening herself to the same inspection. Little by little their bodies pushed against each others increasing in rhythm, the sensual contact scorching heat where their bodies met. Natalie sealed her upper body to his, her mouth biting into his neck, kissing her way to his ear, her tongue circling the outer shell before dipping to stroke the opening.
“Natalie,” the name barely made it pass Hayden’s lips. The succulent lips worked their way around to his, her tongue pushing beyond them to duel with his tongue. She shuddered at his muffled groan grabbing fistfuls of his hair.
Unbridled he pumped faster at her urgent whimpering. Riding him, she panted with the exertion wrenching her mouth away and meeting eyes blazing with promise. “Let’s go, baby,” he whispered to her. Higher and higher they went Natalie’s heart almost bursting from lack of oxygen when he flung her off the cliff. A cry of ecstatic torment filled the bedroom as she plunged into the sky, wrapped around him. The hard contractions of her orgasm snapped Hayden’s head back, his release erupting violently into her, his hands crushing her hips to his. Upwards into a bright light he shot, a growl stuttering from him. Beyond physical release they entwined and held on tightly, arms clasping their racing hearts against each other. A sharp pain stabbed into Natalie’s head from the force of her orgasm but she was held fast in Hayden’s arms and surrendered to the blackout sweeping over her. Hayden’s hips surged up before he collapsed against her dizzy and drained and whole once more.
