Chapter 16

The sleek limo slowly pulled up in front of the Westing home around 9 o’clock that night. Ally looked over at the two sleeping girls curled up together across from her. How sweet they were. After the movie, the group had made their way to a small out of the way diner for some burgers and fries, before having Victor take them around the city to various parks for the kids to play in. All in all it was a pretty good day. It had been a long time since she’d had as much fun as she had today.

“Are we at the hotel?” Hailie asked sleepily, as she sat up and rubbed her eyes.

“No baby, we have to drop Tiffany and Brian off before we go back to the hotel.” Marshall said, as he helped Ally get Tiffany out of the limo without waking her.

“Would you mind carrying her in Marshall? I doubt anyone is home and it’s a pain getting her back to sleep again.” Ally whispered as they stood in front of the open limo.

“Aight. Just lead the way.”

Ally smiled up at him and pulled out the house key from her bag.

“Haile, you wanna wait here with Victor or come in with us real quick?” Marshall asked, before they started for the front door.

“I’ll come.” Hailie said as she popped out of the car.

Quietly, the group made their way to the door and into the front parlor before a voice boomed from the kitchen.

“Where the hell have you been with my children?”

Ally quickly turned to face Mrs. Westing, who was now power walking toward them with the cordless phone in one hand and a martini in the other.

“Mrs. Westing, I…”

“Djou know that I was five minutes away from calling the police on you?!” The woman slurred slightly.

“I left you a note, Mrs. Westing.”

“Well I didn’t see it!”

“Probably can’t see shit right now.” Marshall mumbled as he shifted the still sleeping girl in his arms.

Mrs. Westing turned her attention to him and frowned. “Who the hell are you?”

Marshall raised his eyebrows and was about to reply before Ally cut in.

“This is my friend, Marshall. He was kind enough to come and get the kids with me after you left them here alone.” Ally said snidely.

“I didn’t leave them alone! You were on your way!”

“Actually I wasn’t. I seem to remember you telling me if I couldn’t make it within an hour not to come at all.”
“You fired Ally?” Brian asked, staring at his mother.

“What, I didn’t fire her!”

“I can’t believe you would fire her! After everything she does for us!” Brian said, loudly.

“Wha?” Tiffany asked as she slowly opened her eyes.

“Shut up right now Brian. I won’t have you yelling at me!”

“Whatever.” Brian said as he threw his bag on the coat hook beside him.

Just as Marshall was setting the now wide awake Tiffany down, he watched as Mrs. Westing puckered her face and grabbed Brian’s arm after throwing the phone to the side. “Listen to me you little shit, the next time you mouth off to me I’ll crack you right in it!”

Marshall reacted without thinking and yanked Brian away from his mother. “I’d back talk ya too, if you acted like that to me.”

“Don’t tell me how to raise my son!” She yelled, waving her now empty martini glass at him.

“Go make yourself another drink lady and leave the raising of your kids to someone more qualified.” Marshall said, rolling his eyes.

“Get out of my house! I won’t have you insulting me in my own home.”

“Not much of an insult when he tells the truth.” Brian said, glaring at his mother.

Marshall picked up his daughter who was standing there with a shocked expression on her face. She couldn’t believe what was going on. It all happened so fast, she wasn’t sure if it was really happening. She glared at the woman who was yelling at her father as he carried her to the door.

“I’ll be outside when you’re ready Ally.”

“You can get out too Alison! You brought that trash into my home so this is all your fault!”

“Don’t call him trash! If there is anyone who is trash here it’s certainly not him! And this is all my fault? I don’t think so! If you were a responsible mother, you would have never left your children alone and left your five year old to call my cell phone crying that she couldn’t find anyone in the house. And while we’re on that, did you notice I said she called MY cell phone, NOT yours but MINE! They need me! So don’t you dare say anything is my fault, because all I’ve ever done is take care of those kids and love them, which is a lot more than I can say for you!”
“You ungrateful little…”

“Mom! Leave her alone! We’re going with Ally tonight until you sober up!”

“You’re not leaving this house Brian Westing!”

“Yes we are, because if you try to stop us, I’m calling the cops and telling them everything. That wouldn’t look to good at your job, since you’re such a hotshot lawyer and all.”

Mrs. Westing sputtered for a few seconds before huffing and walking back to the kitchen.

Brian smiled slightly and turned to a shocked Ally. “C’mon, I don’t want to be here when she gets back.”

Ally nodded and grabbed a sniffling Tiffany before they rushed back outside and into the waiting limo. Once everyone was piled back inside, Marshall told Victor to take them back to the hotel. Ally tried to calm Tiffany down, but it was no use. She didn’t understand what was happening. All she knew was that her mother was mad at them and had been screaming.

“Shh, Tiffy. It’s ok. Everything is fine baby.” Ally said softly, rocking the little girl in her lap.

“Why was mommy mad Ally? Did we do something wrong?”

“No sweetie. Remember when I told you that mommy sometimes acts funny after work because she’s real tired?”

“Yea.”

“Well, she was really tired today and sometimes your mommy gets so tired that she wants to yell about it, because she knows she can’t go to sleep until she’s sure that you and Brian are ok.”

“But we were with you.”

“I know honey. But your mommy didn’t see my note so she wasn’t sure what happened and she got worried. Sometimes when grown ups get worried the only thing they can do to stop feeling that way is to get mad at other people.”

“Oh. I don’t want her to be mad at you…or Marshall. It wasn’t your guys’ fault.”

“I know Tiffy. But maybe by tomorrow she’ll be happy again.”

“Yea.” Tiffany said softly before resting against Ally and falling back to sleep.

A few silent minutes passed as Tiffany slowly let herself fall asleep. Once Ally was sure the little girl was out, she looked over at Brian.

“You ok?”

“Yea. I’m really sick of them Ally.” Brian said softly while shaking his head.

“I know. We’ll figure something out ok?”

“Ok.”

Ally looked up again and caught Marshall’s eye.

“I’m really sorry about all this.”

“It’s ok. Coulda been worse right? Shit, coulda been my mom and she’s way more crazier.” Marshall grinned.

Ally smiled and looked out the window for a second. “Um, I guess you should have Victor just take us back to my place.”

“You guys could crash at the hotel if you wanted. This way she can’t show up to start more shit ya know?”

“Oh…well, that would be good I guess. I really don’t feel like dealing with her again.”

“Aight, so just stay the night then. Be easier that way anyway since me and Brian is going to the studio tomorrow and you guys are gonna do your girly things.”

“Yea, thanks Marshall.”

“It’s cool. We’ll figure more out for tomorrow upstairs after we get these girls in bed.” Marshall said, as they pulled up to the hotel. Time to move everyone upstairs now and get them ready for bed.
