“But Anna… she belongs to someone else….” Mike said matter of factly as Anna’s eyes starting showing great disappointment. “Don’t worry about it. I mean… it is all in the past.” Mike was trying to save his relationship with Anna, since he told her about the one nightstand with Gemma. One thing he left out was the fact that they had shared amazing passion just hours before.
“This is not fair, Mike.” Anna was refusing to let the tears run. “And I don’t understand it…”
“Ask me anything, Anna…” Mike was sitting close to her on the couch but they weren’t looking at each other.
“I wanna make sure that you haven’t acted on it – ever! I mean… you say that there were sparks between you the other night at the party… “
“Yeah…”
“And you never acted on them?”
“No…”
“I want to believe that. But I heard something else.”
”What?” Mike looked at her startled. “What do you mean?”
“This girl… Sheena? Well, she told me that someone had seen you and Gemma leave the same room together. And she said that you both looked heated.”
“Why haven’t you confronted me with this before now?!” Mike didn’t understand any of this.
“I didn’t want to cause I thought that I would let you come to me first.” Anna was now looking back at Mike and noticed the fear in his eyes – they revealed too much to her. She could tell that they had acted on it. If only he knew how well she could read him…
“Okay…”
“So? Tell me… is this true?” Anna was desperate to know, but something inside told her that she wasn’t going to like the answer.
“Yeah… I guess. We didn’t sleep together at the party hat’hat’s what you mean. But we kissed.” Mike looked away and returned his gaze back on the coffee table in front of him.
“At the party?” Anna kept looking at him, taking in all his nervous features.
“What?”
“You said that you didn’t sleep together at the party… “
“Yeah. We didn’t.”
“But you did…” She felt the tears sting, but still refuto lto let go. “Later, I mean.”
“I…” Mike looked back at her, noticing the tears that were filling up in her eyes, one single blink would make them all rush down her cheeks. He didn’t know what to tell her. He looked down at his hands and closed his eyes. He moved his head slowly up and down – showing Anna the answer that she had requested, but didn’t want.
“Oh my god…” Anna closed her eyes and felt the hot tears run down.
“I know how little this must mean right now.” Mike looked up at her. “But … I’m sorry.”
“I know you are.” Anna still had her eyes closed. “But tell me one thing…Just one thing.”
“Anything.” Mike sighed and kept his eyes locked with her closed ones.
“You still want her?”
“I don’t know.” Mike felt like he could just as well be honest now that it was all out in the open.
“You don’t know?” Anna opened her eyes, but didn’t look at him.
“No… I don’t. I don’t know. At all.” Mike sighed and moved a hand through his hair.
“Well…. “Anna got up from the couch, still not looking at him. “Don’t keep me waiting…” She slowly left the living room and Mike heard the front door shut. He couldn’t move. He wanted to run after her, and tell her that he still wanted her. But he couldn’t. Cause…. Mike shuttered before thinking the thought to an end. ‘I want Gemma’.
---
3 weeks later.
Leaning up against the wall, Mike felt the coolness calm down his nerves. He knew that he had to face Rob and he knew that it might not end upkingking pretty. The band had their first practice in 3 weeks, and he hadn’t seen Rob since their talk. In fact he had only talked to Gemma one time since… since their encounter. She had told him about Rob knowing everything, which made it all so much more nerve wrecking. Mike knew that he had gotten himself into this mess – and that he had to face Rob. But it felt horrible – and Mike started to feel sick. A sudden knock on the door yanked him out of his thoughts and he almost ran to the door, hoping that it would be someone else than Rob – someone that could take his mind off of things for a minute or two. He opened it and gasped as he saw Rob’s face.
“Hey.” Rob padded him on the arm and walked past him, and into the living room. Mike stoodll ill in the doorway feeling confused about what just happened. Why wasn’t he acting more cold towards him?! Mike had expected a blow to his jaw, an outburst of anger… anything. Not a calm Rob like this. In reality it made Mike uneasier, and he didn’t know how to cope with the situation.
“Eh… hey… Rob!” Mike closed the door and turned around facing the entrance to the living room.
“What?!” Rob looked at Mike noticing his pale face and shaking hands. “Are you sick?”
“No… but… “ Mike stuttered out the words and felt his palms get more and more sweaty. He walked slowly into the room and got closer to Rob.
“But what? What’s wrong?” Rob asked and raised his eyebrows while looking intensely at his friend who stood in front of him by the couch.
“Are you doing this on purpose? Are you trying to freak me out?” Mike placed both his hands on his hips – mostly to wipe them dry.
“What are you talking about?!” Rob threw him a confused look.
“I mean….” Mike had a hard time getting the words past his lips. “I was expecting another Rob to walk through that door today.”
“Oh… you mean… I should’ve knocked you down?!” Rob half smiled.
“Yeah, something like that.” Mike shrugged showing a feeling of frustration.
“But Mike… it’s not worth it. I don’t even want to worry about it.”
“You talked to Gemma?” Mike secretively wanted to know if they were back together.
“Not really. I picked up some of my clothes at her place about two weeks ago – but that’s it. You?” Rob looked at Mike trying to find out if his plan was working.
“Yeah…” He nodded slowly. “Once.” Mike’s hands were flying around not really knowing where to put them. He turned around and ld atd at the door as Chester and Joe came through it in the middle of a discussion.
“But I’m telling you, Joe. That’s not at all the way it goes…”
“You don’t even know what you are talking about… “ Joe shrugged and suddenly noticed the two friends in the corner of his eye.
“Oh hey guys.” Joe jumped down on the couch next to Rob. “What are you doing?”
“Talking.” Rob said and looked over at Mike to see if he was still looking panicked. He was.
“Speaking of…” Chester said and laughed, interrupting the silence that was slowly building up. “I ran into Anna yesterday.”
“Yeah?” Mike quickly turned to look at Chester.
“Yeah… she was acting really weird with me.” Chester frowned thinking about Anna’s cold way of speaking to him, and how she refused eye contact. Not like her normal self. At all.
“Did she tell you anything?” Mike asked wondering what her take on everything was. He hadn’t spoken with her at all ever since the day where she found out about Gemma. And to be honest, he hadn’t given her muchughtught. ‘Funny how a person can be in your life for so long, and then just disappear from your mind that fast…’ Mike thought to himself and looked back up at Chester searching for an answer to his question.
“She talked about you mostly. Asking questions.” Chester said partially in a wondering tone of voice.
“I see…ke nke nodded looking away from the gazeat hat his friends were sending him.
“Wanna tell us what’s been going on between the two of you?!” Chester walked over to Mike and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Huh, Mike?”
“I don’t know what to say exactly.” Mike gazed around the room catching their eyes.
“Just let it out, dude…” Rob’s eyes locked with Mike and he could have sworn that Rob knew. Something.
“You guys split up or something?” Joe asked with concern.
“I don’t know. The words were never really said out loud. But then again… we haven’t talked in about 3 weeks now…” Mike sighed.
“Go on… tell us about it…” Chester still had his hand on Mike’s shoulder.
“We had a fight. And… “ Mike looked away from Rob’s burning eyes. “I just don’t know where we stand at the moment… but it’ll work out, I guess.”
“About?” Rob’s question caused confusion in Mike’s mind.
“What?!”
“What did you guys fight about?!” Rob was still looking intensively at Mik “Oh “Oh…” Mike looked at Rob; his eyes were begging him to let it go. “Well… erm…”
“You guys never seemed to have a lot of problems…” Chester said questioning what could’ve set something like this off.
“We never did…” Mike cleared his throat. “Until…”
“Yeah?” Rob’s eyes were making Mike more and more uneasy.
“Until me and Gemma became an issue.”
“You and Gemma?!” Chester and Joe spat out at the same time. “Rob’s Gemma?!” Joe continued.
Both Rob and Mike nodded – Rob with a revengeful smile on his face.
“What…” Chester looked over at Rob noticing his features.
“This is confusing the hell out of me…” Joe shook his head and looked back and forth from Mike to Rob.
“It’s a long story…” Mike tried to push away more questions that would come to the surface eventually.
“It’s not that long really…” Rob looked up at Chester. “He and Gemma got it on…”
“What?!!” Both Joe and Chester looked at Mike who avoided them both.
“Can we please NOT get into this.” Mike’s voice was pleading his friends.t not now.”
“But… geez, Mike!” Chester’s voice was raised, but more confused than angry.
“Mike… come outside with me for a second.” Rob got up from his seat next to Joe and signalled for Mike to join him. Mike slowly walked after Rob out of the front door, leaving Chester and Joe confused behind him. He closed the door behind him and turned to face Rob. A part of him wanted to know what he had to say, but the other part wanted to run away and not deal with any of this.
“Listen Rob…” Mike started speaking but was quickly cut off by Rob’s words.
“Don’t Mike.” He started. “Let me talk, please.”
“Okay.” Mike nodded.
“I know how crazy this is going to sound…” Their eyes met for a second before letting their gazes around on nothing in particular. “But I’m willing to step out…” The silence after these words grew heavy after a few seconds, and it indicated that Rob was expecting Mike to talk.
“What do you mean by that?” Mike was now looking at Rob trying to figure out what exactly he was saying.
“I mean… “ Rob sighed, his eyes showed great doubt and sadness. “I’m not going to stand in your way… if you and Gemma should want to… you know?!”
“Get together as an item?” Mike was trying to help him out by finishing the sentence.
“Yeah.” Rob nodded once and sighed. He turned to look away and closed his eyes. “Exactly.”
“But we never even talked about…”
“Don’t tell me, please.” Rob looked back at Mike and notiche rhe relieved look in his eyes. “Don’t tell me what you guys talked about or not. Just know that if you do – don’t let me be the reason holding you guys back. I don’t want that hanging over me.”
Rob knew that even if he set out to send Mike on a guilt trip – he could no longer avoid the truth that was in these words. This was the right thing to do. He didn’t want to be selfish and he didn’t have the energy to fight for Gemma. ‘And… am I even sure I want her back?’ he thought to himself. ‘After all we’ve been through – would we ever be able to trust each other again?’ Maybe Mike would be a constant part of their relationship whether or not any of the three wanted him to be one. If Rob wasn’t mistaken, Mike looked happy as the possibility of ‘him and Gemma’ was given to him. Rob felt a heavy load on his chest, but decided to push it all away for now. He had to act strong – at least till after the rehearsal.
They were both standing by the front door looking out on the road watching cars past by.
“Are you sure about this?” Mike asked with a clear hesitance in his voice.
“No.” The answer coming from Rob wasn’t what Mike wanted to hear. He had hoped for the inevitable – that Rob had given up on Gemma completely. Rob moved his hand to Mike’s arm and cleared his throat.
“But it’s the right thing to do.” Rob really couldn’t believe that the words were coming out of his mouth. And that they were making sense to him. He tried hard to convince himself of the fact that he had to tell Mike otherwise. That he had to fight for Gemma. But he couldn’t. Even though it caused pain within him – he couldn’t bring himself to take it all away from the two persons he cared the most about. Cause he did. Even though he knew he shouldn’t.
“But Rob, if…” Mike knew what he wanted to say, but found if hard to get it past his lips. Rob shook his head signalling for Mike to keep quiet.
“Let’s not get more into this now. We have rehearsal. And there are certain things that I’m not ready to share with you after what has happened.” Rob looked Mike straight into his eyes – and Mike nodded, understanding and accepting every word.
“It’s cool, dude. It’s cool.”
“Now... let’s get back inside.” Rob noticed Phoenix and Brad pull up to the side of the road.
“Okay… “ Mike saw them too and nodded knowing what Rob meant. He didn’t want to be confronted with questions either. Under normal circumstances the two would hug each other, but in this situation Rob settled with giving Mike a light pad on the back before they headed inside. They both asked Chester and Joe not to inquire more information at that point, which they accepted since the look on Rob’s face showed great sadness. Mike had noticed it too – but the thought of him and Gemma actually being able to see each other on a more regular basis was something that brought tingles to his stomach. If she wanted him.
