Orlando arrived in LA two days later. He hadn’t spoken to Elijah since he hung up on him. His first priority was to head over to his house and apologize. Orlando quickly got a rental and headed to Elijah’s. Elijah mean while had contacted Johnny and found out about Kate’s involvement in the whole thing. Elijah had decided the best way to tell Kellie would be to have a party and get her to his house. He planned to pull her aside and tell her what he’d found out.
Kellie on the other hand was in a reckless mood. This meant she intended to get drunk and into trouble. She had managed to talk Jenna into going with her. When they got there the party was in full swing. Neither noticed the rental car that pulled in behind them. It had only been two months, but Kellie had lost enough weight to not be recognizable from behind. Her outfit wasn’t typical for her either. Kellie had chosen a light pink tube top that came down to just above her belly button. She wore a pair of dangerously low rise jeans and sandals. Her hair was in a pony tail and she had gold hoops in her ears. She also wore more make-up than her usual none at all. Jenna had raised an eye brow when she picked Kellie up. “What? Don’t you like it?” Kellie asked.
“It screams molest me, I don’t care.” Jenna replied. Kellie had just shrugged off the comment. “Maybe I don’t.” She said. Kellie’s increasingly destructive behavior had bothered Jenna. That was the only reason she had agreed to go to the party.
As they walked to the front door Jenna took a quick look around. Elijah’s house sat in the middle of the property surrounded by trees. It was a rental in a nicely spaced neighborhood. She also suspected the house was sound proof since hardly any noise could be heard from the front. She turned around to survey the street and that’s when she saw the silver Prius that had pulled up behind her own car. The windows were tinted, but as she continued to watch she saw a man with distinctive dark, wavy hair get out. “Oh no!” She said.
“What?” Kellie asked starting to turn around.
“Oh nothing I thought there was something on my jeans.” Jenna quickly pushed Kellie up to the door. She snuck another look at Orlando who didn’t seem to notice them. Of course he’d never met Jenna in person, so he wouldn’t recognize her. Jenna had a bad feeling about all this. How was she going to keep Kellie from seeing Orlando and vice versa?
Kellie opened the front door and went in without knocking. Elijah was talking with Dom when the two women entered the living room. “Kellie! You made it!” Elijah said. He came over and gave Kellie a hug.
“I wouldn’t miss a party!” She laughed. “This is Jenna.”
Elijah shook Jenna’s hand and offered drinks. “Let me help you get them” She said following Elijah to the kitchen. He pulled some beer out of the fridge and turned to hand them to Jenna. “Did you invite Orlando?” She asked. Elijah blinked and looked stunned. “No, He’s in Australia I think.” He finally answered. Just then the front door opened and Elijah watched Orlando walk in.
Luckily the view of the living room was obscured by wall and plants. Before Orlando could go around the corner Elijah got to him and dragged him into the kitchen. Jenna stood holding a beer in each hand. “Orli! What are you doing here?” Elijah asked hugging his friend.
“I came to apologize!” Orlando answered. He was looking over Elijah’s shoulder at Jenna. “Here you are having a party without me!”
“No offense, but I thought you had other plans.”
“They got changed.”
Just then Elijah remembered Jenna.
“Orli this is Jenna.” Elijah said.
“Nice to meet you.” Orlando smiled. “Jenna?”
Jenna nodded and shook his hand.
“Yeah, we finally meet.” She said.
Orlando’s face paled . He recognized Jenna as one of the two women that had come in ahead of him. That meant he knew the blonde also. He looked from Jenna to Elijah. “She’s here?” He finally whispered.
“Yes and if I’d known you were coming I would have warned you and her.” Elijah said.
Orlando nodded and licked his lips. His throat was suddenly very dry. Elijah handed him a beer and he drank quickly. Jenna looked at Elijah and raised her eyebrows. Elijah shrugged. Orlando walked to the door way of the kitchen and peeked into the living room. Kellie was sitting next to Dom. They were whispering to each other and laughing. He hardly recognized her.
“What happened to her?” Orlando whispered. “She’s so thin and pale.”
Jenna cleared her throat and waited for Orlando to stop staring.
“She doesn’t eat or sleep much.” She said. “She works a lot.”
Orlando nodded. “But she’s ok, right?” He asked.
“Define ok, I mean she functions.” Jenna said. “She won’t talk about it, so noone knows.”
Orlando peeked around the corner again. He was uncomfortable with how close she and Dom were sitting. Then he saw Dom nuzzle her neck and kiss her. Orlando felt something akin to jealousy. He quickly turned around and took another swig of the beer.
“Dom and her are together?” He asked.
Jenna laughed and Elijah shook his head.
“No!” Jenna answered.
“He just kissed her.” Orlando stated.
Jenna and Elijah looked at each other and shrugged. Before they could reply Kellie came around the corner and walked right smack into Orlando. His beer spilled down the front of her and she jumped back. “Oh, wow I’m really sorry!” She said without looking up. Orlando just stared at her. Jenna held her breath as Kellie looked up.
“Oh!” Kellie’s mouth opened slightly. The look of shock was evident as was the paleness of her skin. Jenna saw tears, but Kellie quickly blinked them away. She turned and grabbed a towel to soak up the beer on her top. “We were wondering what happened to our beers.” She asked. Kellie was now completely ignoring Orlando. Her eyes darted wildly from Jenna and Elijah. It reminded Jenna of a trapped animal.
“Orli just got back to LA.” Elijah said. You could hear a pin drop in the kitchen.
“Oh yes, you were in Australia!” Kellie said. “Nice weather there?”
Jenna could sense the tension. She imagined Kellie losing it any minute. She looked back and forth between Orlando and Kellie and held her breath.
“It was chilly, but nice.” Orlando finally said.
“Great! Now about those beers Lijah?” Kellie said. Elijah handed her the two he was holding and then quickly grabbed a couple more. Jenna quickly took them from him and followed Kellie out of the kitchen. Orlando never took his eyes off her. Elijah stuck his hands in his pockets and leaned against the counter.
“Pretty girl.” He said.
“Hmm yes, a little skinny.” Orlando remarked. He was still watching her as she handed out beers and sat back down next to Dom. He watched as Dom sniffed and said something in Kellie’s ears. She giggled and must have been explaining when he saw Dom’s face light up and heard him say, “He’s here? Right now?” Within minutes everyone was in the kitchen to see Orlando.
Kellie sighed and let out a breath. She looked at Jenna and tried to smile. “I’m going to go steal one of Elijah’s shirts.” She said. Kellie didn’t wait for Jenna to answer before she bounced up the stairs to Elijah’s bedroom. Jenna sat on the couch and watched as everyone began to make their way back to the living room. Orlando’s gaze roamed the room when he saw Jenna alone. It was Elijah that voiced the question. “Where’s Kellie?”
“She went up to your room to steal a shirt. Beer doesn’t go with her perfume.” Jenna said. She watched Orlando’s face cloud over as he digested this information.
“I’ll go see if she’s found anything.” Elijah said heading for the stairs.
Elijah had told Kellie that Orlando stayed there from time to time and that some of his clothes were in the guest room. This was where Kellie had gone. She quickly found one of his tee shirts in a drawer. She went into Elijah’s bathroom to change. When she came out she went through Elijah’s bedroom and found him sitting on the bed waiting for her. Since Kellie had been wearing a strapless top she hadn’t bothered with a bra. The tee shirt was thin and a little snug around her breasts. It highlighted the fact that she was cold and nervous. Elijah smiled and patted the bed beside him. Kellie sat down and then flopped backwards. The tears she had been fighting began to fall. Elijah handed her a tissue and got up to lock his bedroom door. He knew the last thing Kellie wanted was for Orlando to see her crying. She was trying to hide how hurt she still was. Elijah sat back down and waited for Kellie to compose herself.
“I feel like a fool!” She finally said.
“Don’t, if it helps I think he’s hurting as much as you are.” Elijah said. He laid down next to her on the bed. Kellie rolled over and Elijah started rubbing her back.
“I’m glad you changed your shirt.”
“Why?”
“Well I wanted to get you alone...” Elijah paused. Kellie turned her head to look at him.
“So I could talk to you.” He finished with a grin. Kellie let out the breath she’d been holding. She buried her face in the cover. “ About what?” She asked, her voiced muffled by the quilt.
“I called Johnny and asked him about what happened with Orlando.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to know who gave him those articles and if he’d read the ones you gave him yet.”
“And?”
“It was Kate.”
The silence that hung in the room was thick. Kellie turned her head to face Elijah. He could see how sad she was and his heart ached for her. “I bet he hasn’t read the other articles yet.” She whispered. Elijah shook his head. Kellie rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling. “I love him Lijah and I don’t care if never reads them.” Kellie sobbed. “He doesn’t deserve to be lied to!”
Elijah sighed and pulled Kellie to him. She was right, he didn’t deserve any of this. Neither of them did. The truth had to come out, but how and when was the problem. They laid there for awhile, both staring at the ceiling. “It needs paint.” Kellie finally said.
“What?”
“Your ceiling needs painting.” She smiled. Elijah rolled over and started tickling her. Kellie laughed until she was out of breath. That’s when Orlando came to the door. He started to knock when her heard her laughing. “Oh Lijah!” She screamed breathlessly. Orlando froze in mid knock. He could hear the bed moving. ‘What is she doing? Making the rounds with my friends?’ Orlando raised his hand and knocked loudly. All sounds in the room ceased. Elijah quickly got up and opened the door. “Orli! What’s up?” Elijah asked. His hair was a mess. Orlando looked past him to see Kellie pulling her shirt down.
“I didn’t mean to interrupt.” Orlando said. He was glaring at Elijah and Kellie. Kellie blushed and looked away.
“Oh you weren’t! We were just talking.” Elijah said. He quickly realized what Orlando was thinking. He looked from him to Kellie. She shrugged and slipped into the bathroom. A moment later she came out the other door and went downstairs. Orlando was still glaring as he watched her descend. He pushed Elijah into the bedroom and slammed the door. “What the hell is going on?” Orlando yelled. Elijah stumbled backwards and caught himself at the edge of his bed. He looked with disbelief at Orlando. “Whoa! Wait a minute!” Elijah said. “It’s not what you’re thinking!”
Elijah sat on his bed and stared at Orlando. He was fuming. His brown eyes were black with suppressed emotion. He was actually shaking with fury.
Elijah watched as Orlando tried to rein in the emotions that threatened to erupt. “Orli calm down!” He said. “Why do you even care?” Orlando looked at him in surprise. Why did he care? Orlando leaned against the door and slid to the floor. He rested his head in his hands. “I don’t know.” He whispered. “I can’t stop thinking about her!” Elijah moved from the bed to sit next to Orlando on the floor. He draped an arm around Orlando’s shoulders. “Let me take a stab at this.” Elijah said. “You’re still in love with her.” He felt Orlando’s shoulders sag beneath his arm. They began to shake, he was crying. “Have you read the articles? I mean all of them.” Elijah asked.
“No. I have them and I look at them, but I can’t read them!” Orlando answered.
“Where are they?”
“In my luggage.”
“Which is?”
“In my rental.”
“Great! Go get them and lock yourself in my guest room.” Elijah said. “You can’t come out until you read all of them.”
Orlando looked at him. His eyes were red and swollen. “To what end?” He finally asked. “She asked me not to contact her.”
“For one thing you’ll know the whole truth.” Elijah replied. “We’ll deal with everything else later.”
Elijah stood up and helped Orlando stand. “I need to get downstairs and do some damage control.” He said unlocking the door.
Kellie would have slid down the banister if Elijah had one. She raced into the living room where everyone was sitting. They had all heard the door slam and were now staring at her. She put on her brightest smile and waved. “Hiya!” She said as she sat down next to Dom. “Everything alright?” He asked.
“Yeah, fine.” Kellie nodded. Dom smirked, he knew they were anything but. The next thing they all heard was some yelling. Everyone held their breath, but all was silent. “Well I think we should get going!” Kellie said standing up. “I agree!” Dom said grabbing her hand. “I know where we can go.” Kellie smiled at him and looked at Jenna. “Coming?” She asked. Jenna shook her head. “I think I’ll just hang out here. Make sure they both make it out alive.” She said. Kellie shrugged, “Suit yourself.” Dom and Kellie headed out the door. They were headed to the 310 Lounge with everyone else. Kellie cast a look over her shoulder at Elijah’s window before she hopped into Dom’s car. She didn’t see Orlando watching her leave.
Elijah got to the bottom of the steps as everyone left. “Where are they going?” He asked Jenna.
She sighed and threw the remote onto the couch. “To the 310.” Elijah sighed and walked over to sit down next to her. “It’s probably for the best.” He said. “Orlando is going to hide out here for a couple of days. I talked him into finally reading the articles.” Jenna turned to look at him. “Really? Then what?” Elijah looked at the ceiling. “We’ll deal with that after he knows everything.” He said. Elijah stood up and headed towards the door. “Right now I need to get him settled and started reading.” He said. Jenna smiled and started flipping through channels again. “I think I’ll stay awhile.” She said.
