November 1st 2004. Greenwich Village, New York City.
Kim sat on one of the big chairs in Gerry’s apartment gazing out of the window at the people in the street below, all laughing and chatting excitedly on their way to what would probably be a fantastic night out. Kim sighed and took a gulp of her coffee before turning back to her magazine. To say she was bored out of her brains was an understatement. Gerry had apparently rung Deano up and asked him to call Kim to see if she had wanted to meet up, but so far nothing had happened. Kim had finished filming for the day at four thirty that afternoon and after a brief shopping spree she had headed back to the apartment and lounged around. Just as she was getting into an article about Madonna’s most recent style change, Kim heard a little tap at the door.
‘Well get your dress on Cinderella, your fairy Gay mother is taking you to the ball!’ said a tiny, but larger than life little man as she opened up the door.
‘Well you gotta be Deano’ said Kim cheerfully as she looked at the happy little person in front of her.
‘And if you’re not Kim, then Gerry’s locks are easier to pick than I thought’ laughed Deano as he made his way inside.
‘Coffee?’ asked Kim politely as Deano sat down on the sofa.
‘Yes please doll’ said Deano. Kim made the drinks and came back into the vast lounge where she sat and got to know Deano. She learned that he was 28, single and looking and a fashion student at NYU. Kim found him to be instantly likeable, and very friendly. She sat and listened to him talk of his life and interests and was reminded a little of Gerry, both men shared the same excited enthusiasm for the things they enjoyed most; she could see why they where such good friends.
‘So I’ve been wondering how long it would take Gerry to make a move on you, he talks about you non stop you know’ said Deano a little while later as he sat cross legged on the sofa in front of Kim.
‘We took our time, but I’m glad we got there in the end’ said Kim with a smile.
‘Well, as much as this conversation is interesting and It’s lovely to get to know you, my purpose wasn’t just to come and chat, it was to take you out on the town lady’ said Deano excitedly. And with that he was off. He went into Gerry’s bedroom and flung open the wardrobe, rifling through Kim’s clothes.
‘So where are we heading then my new friend?’ said Kim as she entered the bedroom and sat on the bed.
‘Somewhere for you to show off these!’ said Deano with a little squeak as he saw Kim’s new Manolo’s on the floor of the wardrobe. ‘Oh my god! Are these to die for or what? He continued as he carefully picked up the shoes and let out a little gasp.
‘I have a dark pink/purple dress I was thinking of wearing those with, I brought it just in case I got the chance to go anywhere nice’ said Kim as she stood up and joined Deano at the wardrobe.
‘Is this the one?’ he said as he pulled out a long clingy dress.
‘Yep, that’s it’ said Kim.
‘Oh no, no, no! This won’t look right at all!’ said Deano as he began to fuss around Kim, then put the dress back and continue his search. Kim stood back with an amused look on her face as she watched Deano search. After a few minutes of vetoing a few more clothes he let out yet another squeak and pulled out her black satin Prada skirt, then a little black tight fitting cardigan.
‘These! He announced proudly, ‘oh I have the perfect thing back at my place that would look so good with the shoes, you go get in the bath and ill be back in a flash, gimmie Gerry’s keys so I can get back in without disturbing you in the tub’ said Deano as he began to hustle Kim towards the bathroom. Kim couldn’t help but fall in love with Deano; he was such an adorable little character.
She sat back in the bath once Deano had left and began to pamper herself with a face mask and a deep conditioning treatment for her hair. After she had washed out the thick seaweed conditioner she wrapped her head in a towel and dozed for a few minutes. Those few minutes must have been a little longer because she was woken by Deano shouting ‘Honey, I’m home!’ in a sing song voice. She quickly got out and dried off, put on Gerry’s big black bath robe and went back out to find Deano dancing around with a long dark pink snake print scarf.
‘I told you it was perfect!’ said Deano as he danced and twirled around Kim with the floaty long scarf, making her laugh her head off. While she did her make up Deano kindly took the straightening irons and ran them through her long hair to turn the curls into poker straight locks. Once she had dressed Deano took the scarf and gently placed it round her neck, tying it into a little bow at the side and letting the ends flow out under her hair and over the front of her shoulder.
‘Perfect, perfect, perfect Missy! And now we are all ready to go to shirtless heaven!’ said Deano as he clapped and giggled. Shirtless heaven turned out to be a Gay club on the lower east side called Cupid. As soon as they walked in they where mobbed by a group of Deano’s friends, all fussing over Kim like she was Marilyn Monroe. Kim had never felt so welcome in a place in such a short space of time in all of her life, Deano’s friends where lovely to her. Never let it be said that a gay man doesn’t know how to treat the ladies. Deano brought a round of drinks for everyone before they flocked back to one of the beautiful wrought iron tables surrounded by comfy velvet chairs.
‘I wish they did these in my size’ said Deano’s friend and professional drag act Terri, a little mournfully as he picked up Kim’s foot and looked adoringly at the shoe.
‘They are lovely aren’t they?’ Kim said as she looked at the shoe with Terri.
‘You have the best sense of style with shoes girl, I check out all the magazines you are in and always think you have an eye for a good shoe’ said Terri as he gently placed Kim’s foot back on the floor. She sat and chatted with Terri about shoes, his work and hers and many other things before Deano came running over to her flapping madly, and grabbed both of her hands.
‘We are dancing, and we are dancing now!’ he said as he began to pull her out of her seat.
‘Oh no! Not dancing! Said Kim as she desperately pinned herself to the seat.
‘Look Gerry already told me you can’t dance for all the tea in China, so you can watch and learn!’ Said Deano, being joined by another of the group, Ally, who ran behind Kim’s chair and tipped her out of it.
‘You two are going to pay for this!’ she said as the two men dragged her to the dance floor. It turns out Kim didn’t get them back, for she was having too much of a good time. She danced, drank and laughed her head off, loving the company of Deano and his friends so much that at the end of the night she invited them all back to Gerry’s apartment so they could carry on their little party.
After everyone had called it a night at 4am, Kim cleared the glasses into the dishwasher and fell into bed in her drunken state, glad that she had a days break from filming the following day (or that day as it was). Although she had a day off it had been arranged for her by Lucy. She was to take phone interviews for the morning, and then had a photo shoot to attend at Madison Square Garden in the evening. Kim grumbled to herself in her vodka haze and fell asleep, praying she wasn’t called before 10am or speaking might be a bit of an impossibility with the size of the hangover she anticipated having.
Meanwhile in Australia………….
‘Hello?’ said Gerry as he answered his mobile phone out on the sun filled balcony of his hotel room.
‘Hi Gerry, only me’ said his new assistant Martin.
‘Hiya mate, what can I do for you this morning?’ asked Gerry as he lent over the balcony and waved to a group of fans six floors below him who had gathered outside the hotel.
‘I’m afraid I’ve got to saddle you with some bad news big G’ said Martin. ‘Seems that there are some scenes in Final Field the director and producers aren’t happy with and they want you to fly back out to Vietnam as soon as you are done with this promo tour to re shoot for a month. ‘Final Field’ had been the Vietnam war movie Gerry had made a fair few months previous to working on ‘Professional Lies’ and at the time had half expected to be called back, that film had been dogged with disasters from day one.
‘Oh right, I see. Will you fax the details over to the hotel for me to look at…………….., yeah you got the number there on the Itinerary………. Ok thanks for letting me know Martin……………., yeah I got it, bye’ said Gerry as he pressed the call end button on his phone and let out a long, sad sigh. No Kim for another month. One month had been bad enough and now he wouldn’t get to see his beloved for just over two months.
‘She isn’t going to like this one bit’ thought Gerry to himself as he worked out the time difference between Australia and New York and realized he couldn’t even call her, she would be asleep. It would a few days before Christmas before he saw her again. Feeling more than a touch annoyed Gerry went back into his room, slamming the sliding door so hard that the glass shook in its frame as he stomped through and flung himself onto the bed.
‘I wonder if you know how much I miss you angel’ he said quietly as he looked down at his pendant, turning it over to read the inscription for the millionth time since he had received it. Gerry thought about Kim non stop, and found himself falling into daydream land as just the sight of a photo of her. He kept a picture of her in his wallet that he would open and place on his lap away from sight when he did press conferences and the like, every so often looking down and catching a secret glimpse of her when he should be focusing on the questions being asked.
‘I cant go that long without seeing her, I have to find a way around it’ thought Gerry to himself, thinking and thinking how he could get to New York, even if it was only for a day, he just had to see Kim. He thought and thought and could only reach one conclusion; stalemate. Swearing with frustration at the situation, he got up and dressed as the man who was sent to interview him would be arriving in less than half an hour, and ordered up some fresh coffee. For the first time in years he felt like he could do with a large Whisky, but being so proud of his sobriety he decided against it. He would find a way out of this predicament in the end, he had to. After his interview was over, and he had attended a brief photo shoot out on the beach nearby his hotel, Gerry checked the time and realized Kim would be awake, so it was time to have to deliver the bad news.
‘You’re joking’ she said in a little voice so sad it made a lump rise in Gerry’s throat.
‘Afraid not angel, it’s a complete pain in the arse but I have to do it, you have no idea how mad I was when I found out from Martin this morning’ said Gerry as he frowned and rubbed his eyes.
‘I can’t even fit in coming out there to see you, I’ve got two premiers to go to and a pile of photo shoots back in London, oh god this is awful’ Kim said hopelessly as her voice trembled with a sob.
‘Please don’t cry babe, I’m so sorry to have to do this to you, I really, really don’t want to but its out of my hands’ said Gerry sadly.
‘I know it’s not your fault darling, I’m not blaming you at all’ said Kim as she dried her eyes on the back of her hand.
‘I love you babe, I really do, and I miss you so much’ said Gerry.
I love you too gorgeous’ Kim said quietly, fighting back the tears with all her might. They continued their subdued conversation for as long as they could, before Kim’s other mobile phone that she used for work only began to ring, the next interview about to start. She said her goodbyes and quickly answered the phone, politely informing the interviewer she would call back in ten minutes as there was something she needed to do before she could talk. As she hung up the phone she put her head down on one of the big cushions on Gerry’s sofa and cried her eyes out.
‘It’s just bullshit, I mean real, 100% undiluted BULLSHIT!’ raged Kim as she paced around and around in circles in front of Deano later that night, who had picked her up from the photo shoot in Madison Square Garden.
‘Well if he’s gotta do it, he’s gotta do it doll’ said Deano as he reached out and grabbed Kim’s hand, steadying her pacing to a halt as he rubbed her hand in both of his. ‘I know it’s hard not being with him, I’ve had to do the long distance thing before when I was with this guy called Chris who sang and played piano on a cruise liner, I wouldn’t see him for months on end so believe me sweetie I know just how frustrated you feel’ he continued as he looked up at Kim with big sympathetic eyes and a soft little smile.
‘I know, it doesn’t mean I have to like it though, and I know there’s going to be times when we will be separated for longer and I know I have to get used to it, but I just miss him so much, I feel so lonely without him’ said Kim as she dissolved into tears again. Deano stood up and pulled her into a hug, feeling a lump rise in his throat. He was so sad for her, for the both of them that it was all he could do not to cry himself. Although he had only known her for a brief time Deano adored Kim, she was like the little sister he never had. And he couldn’t stand to see her so upset.
‘Poor little thing’ he softly cooed as he hugged Kim and stroked her hair.
‘I think you are the little one here’ said Kim through her tears, letting out a soft little laugh.
‘There! That’s better, a little smile!’ said Deano as he hooked his fingers under Kim’s chin and pulled a silly face at her, making her laugh a little more. ‘I know I’m no substitute for Gerry, but I try’ said Deano as he let go of Kim and sat down.
‘You’re amazing for just being you Deano, and I know when I leave New York ill have to find a Deano substitute, that’s one thing I know for sure’ said Kim as she sat down next to her friend and gave his arm a squeeze.
‘Awwwww, that’s such a sweet thing to say’ said Deano with a shaky voice as his eyes welled up.
‘Now don’t you start, or we will be mopping up the tears for the rest of the night’ said Kim, to which they both laughed and hugged.
The mood on Kim’s last day of filming was a very sombre one. It would be her very last scene with Zoë, where Martha’s ghost came back one more time to sing ‘Crazy’ to Callie as she lay next to her on her little bed. Everyone’s emotions where running high, especially the crew who couldn’t help but dry their teary eyes as they looked on at Zoë and Kim, and in the end that five minute scene took hours to film, as Kim also kept crying in the middle of shooting. In the end they got the perfect take, and no one could say that the emotion both Kim and Zoë poured into the moving scene was acted. The tears, the shaky voices and the sadness where all real, and that’s what made the scene all the more special. When Kim left the set after saying her goodbyes she took a cab back to Gerry’s apartment. After making herself a coffee and double checking her flight again for her return to London in just under two days she picked up the messages on her mobile phone. She had two voicemails from Lucy, and one from Deano.
‘Hey dollbaby, since you are leaving me all alone in a day and a half I propose that we say goodbye in style! I’m taking you to Barracuda tonight so get yourself ready for eight and ill be there to fetch you, later honey love youuuuuuuu!’ Deano chimed happily. Kim deleted the voice message, sent him a text message to confirm and then went for a long soak in the bath. As she lay back she thought of Gerry, and where he would be right at that moment. She guessed he would be somewhere over the Atlantic as he was flying from Sydney to London, then taking a connecting flight to L.A for the last of his promotional tour stops.
‘I can wait another four weeks, I know I can’ Kim said aloud as she lathered shampoo into her long tresses. It felt like a lifetime since she had seen Gerry last, but she knew she could stick it out for another month, even though she was gradually feeling more and more down about their enforced separation. In reality with all the travelling it was more likely to be nearer five weeks, she had worked out that Gerry would fly back to the UK three days before Christmas, and she felt glad that at least she would get to spend the festive season with him.
They had arranged to spend Christmas day with Kim’s family, and then head off to Scotland on the night to spend Boxing Day with Gerry’s family. Kim couldn’t wait to meet his mother and stepfather, and his brother and sister, and held this as something to look forward to other than getting her beloved Gerry back, thus making the time to wait a little more special.
Kim got ready earlier that she had to and rang Deano on the off chance that he was all set to go too.
‘Meet me there honey, it only means I’d have to take a cab past Barracuda to get to you, so it works out a little better if we do this, see you in a little while bye, bye!’ Deano had said to her when she called, sounding very excited. Kim wondered why he was more chipper than usual as she hung up the phone. She couldn’t help but smile, the mood Deano sounded to be in guaranteed she would have a good night, and that was just what she needed, a good night out to take her mind of Gerry for a bit.
Kim exited the apartment and took the lift down to the ground floor and hailed a cab outside the huge apartment block. Once she had arrived at Barracuda she saw Deano straight away sat atop of a high bar stool at the bar, flirting with one of the barmen.
‘So what’s his name and do you have his number yet?’ said Kim as she sat down, and the barman had departed.
‘Give me time Môn Cherie! Give me time’ said Deano as he eyed the barman’s rather cute little ass as he bent to retrieve a cocktail glass from under the bar. Kim giggled and Deano gave her a ‘What?’ look before laughing himself. Throughout the first half an hour of them being there Kim could help but notice Deano’s attention kept drifting to the staircase entrance behind her.
‘Waiting for someone are we?’ asked Kim with a quick double raise of her eyebrows.
‘Indeed I am’ said Deano with a wry smile.
‘Waiting for someone and chatting up the barman, you sir are professional floozy!’ laughed Kim as she gave Deano a playful slap on the knee. ‘So who’s this guy you are meeting here then?’ she continued, taking a sip from her Margarita.
‘Oh he’s someone very special, very good looking guy’ said Deano with a huge Cheshire cat grin, once again glancing over Kim’s shoulder at the stairs.
‘And is he running late?’ asked Kim.
‘Well, he was, but he isn’t anymore’ said Deano. As he spoke the words Kim suddenly began to feel very strange. All of the hairs on the back of her neck had stood on end and she suddenly felt a bit warm, but then she realized the warmth was coming from a soft breath at the back of her neck, and the strange feeling bubbling in her stomach was from a scent she knew only too well. Before she had chance to turn in her seat, she heard him speak that immortal line, those two words that whenever she heard them made her heart feel like it had just caught fire.
