Chloe had by some miracle managed to actually walk on her own to the daycare part of the building. She had sent Ryan to get some rest, seeing as it was daylight and he should have been in his coffin to sleep. They had attributed it to her being his blood master, but it was still a little weird.
She heard someone scream from the room where all the kids were and ran down the hall, wanting to scream herself from the slight shocks of pain going through her body. She stopped in the doorway and sighed, seeing that it was only the squeals of the little kids laughing at Brendon as he flew around the room, landing beside a Barbie doll. The doll was only slightly shorter than him. “How you doing, Barbie?”
The tiny squeaky voice speaking those words sent the kids in another fit of giggles and Chloe managed to sneak into the room and sit in a corner by the door. She watched Brianna and Alex on the other side of the room laughing and shaking their heads at Brendon’s antics.
Shouting from outside the room let her know that something was going on. “I demand to see my son!”
Chloe heard someone fall as a large man walked into the door. He looked around the room, his eyes landing on a boy in the middle of the room. “Doyle, come to your father.”
Chloe glanced at the normal daycare working who was shaking her head. She found Chloe looking at her and mouthed, ‘Trouble’. Not something Chloe wanted to think about.
Chloe looked at the large man and then back at the working, ‘Call Doyle’s mother’. She mouthed the words and saw the worker nod and reach for the phone as she stood and stepped between the frightened little boy and his father. “I’m sorry, but you can’t just barge in here and think you can just take one of the children.”
“He’s my son. I have every right.”
“Bring me Doyle’s file.” Someone was already on it and handed Chloe the file. She looked through it and shook her head. “What’s your name, sir?”
“Gregory Delano, COUNT Gregory Delano.”
Chloe nodded and shook her head. “Sorry. You’re not on the approved list. You’ll have to get his mother to allow you to see him. Now if you will please vacate the area.”
Brendon flew over to flutter beside Chloe and the count twitched before flinging his arm out and sending Brendon flying into a wall. Chloe gasped and ran to Brendon’s side without even thinking. She touched him and he came back to his normal size, shaking his head. “Bastard!”
He stood and went to charge the count, but Chloe stopped him. “No, Brendon. I’ll handle this.” She touched his cheek gently and kissed him, putting her forehead against his. “It’s alright.”
She turned back to the count who was still trying to coax his son into coming with him, though Alex and Brianna were standing between him and his father. “Let me through, damn you! I want my son, and I want him now.”
“No, Count Delano. You must vacate the premises before I show you out myself.”
“I don’t want to talk to you, you preternatural whore. You and your freak boyfriend can stay the fuck out of my way. You are nothing to me.”
With that little threat, Chloe’s mind snapped and she felt the power lash out and send the count into the wall. “What did you say?”
The count looked at Chloe for an instant and growled. “You’re that Persephone bitch’s daughter. Fuck you!”
Again, he went into the wall. “Don’t call my mother a bitch.”
A hand on her shoulder stopped her from doing more, but it wasn’t Brendon, like she had thought. It was Nia, and she was pissed. “Let me handle this, Chloe.”
Ray was standing behind Nia, looking just as pissed, his eyes a lion gold as he stared at the count. “Yeah, Chloe, let Nia take care of it.”
Chloe didn’t know what was going on, but she stepped back and into Brendon’s arms, wrapping her arms around his waist. “Go for it, Auntie.”
Nia smiled an evil smile and stepped toward the count. “Count Delano, we meet again.”
“Stay away from me, you psycho bitch!” Fear and trepidation in his voice, the count started to back out the door of the room.
“What’s wrong, Count? Afraid I’ll burn your ass like I did last time.” Small thunder clouds began to form around Nia’s head, little lightening bolts coming out of them. It was the first time Chloe had ever seen proof that her aunt was a weather witch, and she loved it.
“Ms. Bryar, please, call your aunt off.” He was begging Chloe for help? After calling her a freak.
“I’m sorry, Count Delano, us freaks aren’t too fond of helping those humans who treat us unkindly.” Even to Chloe, she sounded bitter and angry, like she had been called a freak one too many times.
“You hear that, Count? No one here is going to help you. Get the fuck out before I show you what I’ve learned in the last twenty years.” Thunder sounded in the room, making the kids shriek in terror. “Get out …”
The count turned like he was going to leave but turned around quickly, gun in hand. He shot at Nia, but missed and hit Brendon in the chest. The bullet went through Brendon and hit Chloe in the collarbone, knocking both her and Brendon to the floor.
Chloe could feel the blood flowing from her neck and knew that she didn’t have all that much time to get help for herself or Brendon before they both died. She looked up to see Ray already on the phone and putting pressure on Brendon’s chest.
She felt someone push down on her collarbone and looked up disoriented to find Brianna putting pressure on her collarbone. She moved her head and found Alex in dragon form breathing fire down the hall, Nia throwing lightening bolts, and gunshots still being fired. The children were long gone, but there were still others in danger.
Chloe tried to get up, but Brianna pushed her back down. She stopped moving and looked up just in time to see a single bolt of lightening hit Count Delano in the chest, blowing a hole clean through him. But that wasn’t the only thing that hit him. A bullet had taken him from behind, sending blood and thicker things all over Nia and Alex.
Jon stood behind the count’s body, gun still at the ready. Chloe had never been happier to see him, though her vision was starting to vanish around the edges as Naida walked into the room, looking more like an angel than a mermaid.
“Chloe, can you hear me?” Naida’s voice. Chloe moved to nod, but the blackness stole her vision and all thoughts, sucking her into the world beyond. At least she would be there with Brendon. With that thought, she let unconsciousness take over her.
