Naida walked through the halls of Bryar Enterprises almost six months after her meeting with Anthony Iero and answered all the questions that the hundreds of people seemed to have for her that day. It had been like this almost every day since the deadline was given, but she enjoyed being helpful in at least running the office.
Shortly after Bill had started to make the phone calls she was informed that her part in the little plan was over because she had to think about her baby. Now, six months later, she was more than worried about the little thing she could feel growing inside her.
She was on her way downstairs to relieve Bill of secretary duty when she had a sudden craving for vanilla ice cream and Funyuns. She sighed and made a detour for the kitchen on the floor, finding what she needed and throwing them all in a bowl before heading back to the elevators.
She met Emelie on the way and smiled as the other woman handed her own baby off to Naida. “Hold her for a minute, please. I seemed to have misplaced her pacifier in my purse.”
Naida nodded and rested the little girl gently in her arms and smiled as the infant cooed at her. “Hello, Bianca. How is my favorite little angel today? Giving your daddy hell again?”
Naida smiled as the baby giggled, hugging her to her. She had spent a great deal of the last month watching the little girl as Emelie and Frank trained with the others in the basement, but she had learned not to mind it. It was giving her practice doing the things that she hadn’t been able to do with her son. She knew deep down that Emelie understood this, hence why Bianca had become an important part of Naida’s life.
“Ah! Here it is. Going to relieve Bill, Nay?” Emelie took the infant back from Naida and handed the pacifier to the baby.
“Yeah. I’m running a little late. Had to get a little snack to last me for a few hours. Have you seen Jeremy lately?”
“He was downstairs with Frank, last I heard. They were talking strategy plans. He’s brilliant at that stuff. I didn’t think anyone could cut through Frank’s plans like Jeremy does.”
“He is brilliant. Anyway, I should head downstairs. Bye, Bianca.” Naida kissed the small infant on the head and gave Emelie a quick hug before grabbing her bowl and heading to the elevators.
She walked out of the elevators, eating the bizarre concoction, when she heard her name in a voice she always dreaded hearing. “I’m looking for Naida Davis.”
“Name and reasoning for being here.”
“Pete Woods and she’s a friend of mine.” He stood there in his human form, looking innocent and harmless, but Naida knew better.
“I don’t exactly think I would consider you a friend, Lucifer.” Naida walked over to the desk, ignoring the shocked expression on Bill’s face. “What do you want? Why aren’t you sitting on that big throne of yours in Hell?”
Satan, now going by Pete apparently, looked Naida up and down, his eyes stopping on the very prominent stomach she now showed off. “I did not know you were pregnant, Naida.”
“What does me being pregnant have to do with what you’re doing here?” Naida took a bite out of the ice cream and onion ring soup she now had and looked at him, jumping slightly as the baby kicked her hard. She felt Bill’s hand on her stomach and the baby calmed, though ‘Pete’ was looking at them weird.
Pete sighed and shook his head. “I came to offer my allegiance in helping you defeat Anthony.”
“What? Why?”
“I’ve been in love with you for years, Naida. Shouldn’t that be enough?”
“No. I’m with Jeremy, not you. What other reason do you have?” Naida laid her hand on Bill’s needing the comfort of his touch at that moment.
“Fine. He’s grown too powerful for just me to control. I have millions at my disposal and would be more than willing to help you defeat him. Because …”
“If he defeats Earth he’ll have more at his disposal to knock you off your throne. I get it.” Naida moved her hands to her head, massaging her temples. She so didn’t need this right now.
She felt the nausea a split second before she grabbed the trash can. She felt warm hands on the back of her neck and knew that Bill was holding her as she puked, something he had taken turns with Jeremy doing the last three months.
She finally stopped and took the seat he was offering for her. She looked at Pete and sighed. “So, Pete, I guess you will want to be called, how do you propose exactly we get your people up here to help my people? And who exactly do you think will in charge of the combined armies?”
“Are you okay?” Naida nodded. “OK, um, well I can use my own powers to get my people up here through Contract Valley in less than a day. And, up until a few moments ago, I assumed that you would be the one leading the army. Who is leading if not you?”
“I am.” Lucy walked around the corner and came up behind Naida with a wet rag. “I could hear you puking all the way down the hall. Are you okay?”
“Normal morning sickness, Loos.” She took the rag and wiped her mouth, before laying the rag on the back of he neck, letting the cool water run through her whole body. “As you see, Pete, we have an amazing military leader.”
“Yes, Father, I am more than adequate. When you kicked me out of Hell, I came up here and used the skills I learned in your army to more up in the ranks of the military up here. Do you have a problem with following me?” Lucy was challenging him and Naida knew it, but she had grown so close to Lucy over the last few months that she just found it humorous.
“If it will allow me to keep my kingdom, my people are at your service, Lucy.” He didn’t say it as one should have said it, but he had said it nonetheless. A million people to do with as they pleased? Naida was ecstatic.
“Great! Bill, inform the others. Pete, get your people here ASAP. As for me, I’m going to be sick again.” Naida shrugged as she puked again, this time with Lucy holding her hair and rubbing her back. “What’s the deal with the morning sickness? It’s like I’m seasick all the time. I have never been seasick.”
“Your husband’s a werewolf. They tend to get seasick.” Pete spoke from the other side of the desk, matter of factly. He shrugged when they looked at him. “I saw it in someone else I know. I will leave and get my people here within the hour.”
Naida nodded as he left and then moved to get to work. She wished Jeremy was here right now, but she knew that he would be downstairs with Frank for a few hours before she could see him. Sighing, she turned to watch as Pete walked out the door.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
He had lied. It was all Naida could think of, yet this time she was glad that Lucifer was a liar. She stood at the front of the largest of the warehouses on the outside of the town with Jeremy and looked out at a billion faces, only two hundred thousand of them were her people. The rest of the group were demons that Lucifer had brought up to help them.
She smiled as Jeremy kissed the back of her neck, his hand going to rest on her stomach as it always did. “How are my girls?”
“How do you know it’s a girl, Jeremy?”
“I just know these things, Nay.” Naida laughed gently as he kissed her, wrapping his arms around her waist with ease.
She heard a cough behind them and sighed, turning to look at Pete. “Yes?”
“I needed to find Lucy.”
“She should be with Josh in the back room. He’s staying here with me so she’s giving a goodbye fuck, I think.” Naida smiled at Jeremy, who was laughing. “What? It’s so something she would do. I mean, I’ve caught them in the janitor’s closet.”
“I know it’s something she would do. That’s why it’s so funny.” He turned to Pete and smiled. “Just give them a few minutes and she’ll be out. They’ve been in there about an hour.”
“Who’s been where an hour?” Spencer walked around the corner, hearing the tail end of Jeremy’s sentence.
“Lucy and Josh.”
“Are they going at it again? Damn! And I thought Hayley and I were bad. I mean, at least we keep it in the bedroom and don’t do it in the office at a meeting.” He walked toward the office door and beat on it hard. “Will you two finish up already and get out here?! We’re waiting for our all powerful leader!”
“I so don’t need to know that my little brother is having sex.” Naida shook her head as Spencer walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her.
“And you think I want to know exactly what you and Jeremy were doing to get you pregnant? I don’t think so!” He jumped a little as the baby kicked and laid his hand on her stomach. He leaned down and began to whisper to the baby. “Yes, my little girl, it’s your uncle Spencer. Tell your mommy that she needs to learn to deal with the fact that I’m twenty years old and therefore sex is always on my brain.”
Naida slapped him on the shoulder and shook her head. “Don’t corrupt her already. Damnit! Now you two have me doing it.”
“Sorry, Nay, but we want us a baby girl.” Bill walked around the corner with Alex, both with a huge smile on their faces. “Someone I can dress up in frilly pink dresses and play princess with. She’ll run around yelling for her uncle Billy. I am going to be called uncle, right?”
“Of course, Bill. You, Alex, Frank, Ray, and Brendon are all going to be her uncles.” Spencer grunted. “You’re already her uncle, dumbass.”
Spencer rolled his eyes and moved away from Naida as Hayley flew into his arms. “Hello, darling.”
“Oh my God, Spencer! Chloe, Brendon, Ray, and Nia are here! They’re actually here to help with the fight!”
“What about their kids?”
Alex was already moving, laughing as his mother ran at him, knocking him to the ground. He kissed her and then pulled her to her feet. “Mom! What are you doing here? I thought you were in France with Ray?”
“We were, but Rick called and told us about the fight and we couldn’t stay there. We came home to help.”
“Where are Frankie and Artie?” Alex looked around for Ray, Brendon, and Chloe, each coming from the crowd with a baby in their arms. “Well there are my beautiful brother and sister. But why did you bring them?”
“I volunteered for Naida duty.” Brendon smiled at Naida, walking over to her and kissing her on the cheek. “You look great, Nay.” He laid his hand on her stomach and was rewarded with a kick. “And she’s an active little one, isn’t she?”
“Oh no, not you too!”
“Me too what?” Brendon acted innocent, but Naida wasn’t fooled.
“They told you they wanted a girl, didn’t they?”
“Yeah, but I want one too.” Brendon didn’t elaborate as to why he wanted Naida to have a little girl. None of them had. It made her wonder if there was some inner message to it.
Sighing, she gestured to Ray and Nia’s kids. “What about them? You explained why you brought Ryan with you staying with me, but what about Frankie and Artie?”
“I’m on Naida duty too.” Nia smiled at Naida with a shrug. “I thought you might need some more female company consider I heard some guy some Josh was staying with you.”
“Someone call me?” Josh walked out of the office, pulling his shirt back over his head. “Are we talking about Naida duty?”
“Will you quit calling it that? You act like I can’t take care of myself.” Naida crossed her arms and frowned like a little kid. “I can still very much take care of myself.”
“We know you can, baby, but we’re just being extra careful because of the baby.” Jeremy put his arm around Naida and she relaxed without meaning to, quickly pulling the pout back on her face. “Don’t be like that, Nay. You know I’m only going because Frank and I thought of all the strategies.”
“I know, but I wanted to go so bad. You know this is all you fault, right? You and that throbbing mass of flesh between your legs. If you had just kept it in your pants, I would be helping in this fight right now.” Naida barely notice the blush that crept up Jeremy’s face.
“If I had kept in my pants, you would be in a containment cell right now talking about the different ways in which you could kill your friends.”
“Damn, point made. I hate you for that.”
“No you don’t.” Jeremy kissed Naida and she melted into his arms without any fighting, unable to resist the feel of his lips on hers.
She heard the chorus of awws from everyone around them and groaned. “Oh grow up already.”
“This is the first time we’ve seen you with someone since Jon, Nay. You have to think about how happy we are for you. He seems to have a genuine effect on you.” Chloe smiled at Naida and she groaned, turning back to the rest of the group. “Stop staring at me like that and let’s get this damned meeting over with so we can get back to BE. Where’s Lucy, Josh?”
“She’s coming.” Josh laughed and shook his head. “Sorry.”
“I’m here, I’m here.” Lucy came rushing out of the office, buttoning her jeans as she walked to the podium. She didn’t waste any time, as usual, and went right into the reason for the meeting. “Everyone! SHUT THE FUCK UP!!” Silence fell onto the room and she smiled, going perky. “Perfect. Now. We haven’t fought together before, but we all have a general idea of the strategies we will all be following. Any questions before we head into the void?”
“Can we just get this over with?” Some demon from the back yelled and received a death glare from not only Lucy, but Pete as well.
“Everyone else agree with that? Do you all just want to go out there and get it over with?” A chorus of yes went up and Lucy shrugged. “Fine with me. Let’s get the hell out of here. You know your brigades.”
Lucy came down the podium and kissed Josh one last time before taking off into the crowd with Ray, Chloe, Alex, Spencer, Hayley, and Bill behind her. Jeremy turned to Naida and smiled. “I swear I will come back to you, Naida.”
“Don’t make a promise you can’t keep, Jeremy.” Naida felt the tears come to her eyes and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Stay with me.”
“I can’t and you know that, Nay, but this is a promise I can keep. Trust me on this. I will explain everything in detail when I get back, but I will come back.” Jeremy kissed her, laid a hand on her stomach for a minute, and then turned to Brendon, Nia, and Josh. “Take care of them for me.”
He was gone as soon as they nodded, heading after Spencer’s tall frame. Naida allowed Brendon and Josh to lead her back to the car that they would use to get back to BE and the protection it offered, but Naida wasn’t there. She was far away, thinking of another lifetime when she had heard the words that Jeremy had just whispered. And Jon had never come back.
