Chapter 16: One is Not the Loneliest Number
∞♥♥♥♥∞
Time was flying by way too fast for my taste. The twins were now one and a half years old, and they were growing up fast.
We had gone to Virginia to let Chris’ parents visit with the twins. We stayed for about a week, and had an amazing time. Even so, I was gad to be home. I didn’t like how Chris’ and my marriage wasn’t legal there. I mean, we were married. How could any state say we weren’t? I was sick of all the homophobic ass holes in the world. I was just glad that Chris and I could live in Seattle, where our marriage was recognized.
Anyway, we were back in Seattle by the beginning of December. When we arrived home, we fund a message on our answering machine from Sligh. He and Phil wanted to come down and see the twins, and maybe have an early Christmas celebration. Of course, that gave Chris and I an idea, and we decided to invite the rest top ten to come down as well. We were pleased that everyone was able to make it down the third Friday in December, and stay until Sunday.
So, Chris and I booked five rooms for three days each at a hotel nearby us. Gina and Haley said they didn’t mind sharing a room, and Jordin, Melinda, and LaKisha didn’t mind sharing one either. The guys all wanted their own room. They offered to pay for their rooms, but Chris and I refused. We felt bad making everyone sleep at a hotel, but with the twins, there was no room left in our house. We got them suites, so it wasn’t that big of a sacrifice for them.
Anyway, Chris and I got the house looking nice the day before, and were now relaxing in the family room, watching the twins play with their toys in their playpen.
After a moment, Colin stood up, his little hands resting over the top of the playpen. He looked at Chris, and I smiled. Lately, Colin had been wanting to spend time with Chris a lot lately. He always wanted Chris to hold him.
Chris grinned, and picked Colin up. “Hey, sweetie. How’s my baby boy today, hm? You’re teeth still hurting you?” He pressed a thumb to Colin’s chin, causing Colin’s mouth to open, revealing two front teeth, and a few on the bottom.
Bliss had the same amount of teeth in the same places—I had checked the day before. I was weird. I guessed it was a twin thing.
Bliss stood up and opened her arms. She looked at me. I smiled, and picked her up. Come to think of it, Bliss had been wanting me to hold her a lot lately. It was kind of ironic since I wanted the boy and Chris wanted the girl. Though, we both loved Colin the same amount as we loved Bliss and vise-versa.
“You know, if they can stand up, they just might be ready to walk. They’re at that age now,” Chris said to me.
I grinned at him. “You really think so?”
He nodded. “Let’s try. Set Bliss down, and we can move their playpen out of the way.”
We set the twins on the couch, and then moved the playpen out of the way. Once there was a big enough empty space on the floor, Chris got out the video camera. He put it on its tripod, faced it towards where we would be teaching the twins, and then turned it on.
Next, we picked up the he twins, and sat down across from each other with them. Chris had Colin, and I had Bliss.
“You ready to try walking, sweetie?” Chris asked Colin.
Colin laughed, and clapped his hands together.
He laughed. “I’ll take that as a yes.”
“How about you, baby girl? You ready to walk for dada and daddy?” I smiled down at Bliss, and shook her little hand.
Bliss smiled at me, and I kissed her cheek.
I stood up with her and held her hands. I walked her around a bit, and she laughed and laughed, apparently loving walking.
Chris followed behind us with Colin, and Colin smiled as they walked.
We did it this way for about five minutes, then we sat down across from each other again, Chris still with Colin, and me still with Bliss.
“Go to Daddy,” I said to Bliss.
“Go to Dada,” Chris said to Colin.
We let go of the twins. Colin began walking to me, but fell down on his butt halfway there.
“You okay, baby?” I asked.
Colin just laughed, and stood back up.
“Come see Daddy, Bliss. That’s it,” Chris said, holding his hands out to Bliss, and grinning brightly.
She was grinning brightly right back at him, and charging towards him. She walked faster, and fell right into his arms.
“Good girl, Bliss! You walked!” Chris kissed her all over her face and tickled her.
Bliss giggled happily, with the biggest smile I had ever seen on her face.
I smiled at the moment. It was beautiful. I then turned my attention back to Colin. He was just standing there now, staring at me.
I held out my hands. “Come on, Colin. Come see Dada!”
Colin started toddling towards me again.
“That’s it. You’re almost there. Come on, sweetie. Come see Dada.” I held out my arms even wider.
Colin smiled, and began to quickly toddle to me.
He tripped over his own two feet at the last step, and, like Bliss had fallen into Chris’ arms, he fell into my arms.
“Congratulations, baby! You walked!” I said. “All right! My baby boy knows how to walk. Dada is so proud of you.” I looked at Bliss. “Of both of you.”
Colin looked up at me with his big brown eyes, and smiled. Then, he said the word I had been waiting to hear since the day he was born. “Dada.”
I looked at Chris, who was grinning so widely at me.
I felt tears well up in my eyes. Colin had finally called me dada. I pulled him close, and kissed his cheek. “Dada loves you so much!” I did. With all of my heart and soul.

I was so happy for Blake! I knew how much he had wanted to hear Colin call him Dada. It had finally happened. However, I was sure going to miss being able to tease Blake about Colin calling him mama. True, I could still tease him since it had been Colin’s first word, but it wasn't the same now that Colin called him dada.
I was also so happy that our twins had taken their first steps! I could hardly wait to show everyone the tape. I had never felt more proud than I was at that moment.
“Walk back to Dada, Bliss,” I gently ordered.
“Walk back to Daddy,” Blake told Colin.
We let the twins go again, and this time, they both walked without falling.
Of course this earned them both kisses from us.
“Can you say Daddy? You haven’t said Daddy yet,” I said to Colin.
Colin smiled, and said right away, “Daddy.”
Blake’s mouth dropped open. “Sure, you ask him once, and he says it. I asked him several times before to say dada, and he never did until now. And when he did finally say it, I hadn’t asked him too.”
I smirked. “He just wasn’t ready when you asked him. He was ready to say Daddy now. Ask Bliss. Maybe she’s ready to say Dada.” I winked at him.
Blake looked down at Bliss. “Can you say Dada?”
Bliss just blinked blankly at him.
I hid a smile behind my hand.
Blake pouted. “Please, Bliss. Say Dada.”
Bliss smiled. “Daddy.”
“No, say Dada. Da-Da!” Blake coaxed.
“Daddy!” Bliss said, clapping her hands together and laughing.
Blake sighed. He stood up. “Well, I guess she loves you more than me.”
I was just about to tell him to stop being so melodramatic, when Bliss spoke again.
“Dada,” she said, looking up at Blake, and holding her arms up to him.
Blake paused. “Wait, what?”
“Dada, up!” Bliss insisted, her arms still in the air, and her tiny hands clenching and unclenching.
Blake smiled so wide as he picked Bliss up and kissed her. “You said Dada! Finally! This is such a good day. I heard dada twice!” He kissed her cheeks all over, and she giggled.
“And they took their first steps. Remember that?” I asked with a smirk.
Blake grinned. “That too.”
I picked up Colin, and walked over to Blake. I kissed his lips, and he instantly gave into the kiss.
When we broke the kiss, we grinned at each other.
“I can hardly wait to show everyone the video. The camera is still rolling.” I nodded towards the camera. “It even got the twins calling you Dada, so you can hear it and see it again and again.”
He kissed me again, and then he kissed Bliss’ head, then Collin’s head.
I followed suit.
“Come on.” He nodded towards the phone. “Let’s go call mom and Dad and tell them the good news!”
I nodded and grinned. “Then we can call mine!”
We both ran off towards the phone, so excited. I was the proudest I had ever been. Our twins had walked. They also both knew how to say dada and daddy. I was happier than I ever thought possible, and I never wanted it to end.

Since everyone had different flight schedules, our friends were just going to take a cab to their hotel, and then we would pick them up.
Jordin and Sanjaya were the first to arrive since they lived the closest and were on the same flight.
Jordin called us, and we headed over to wait for the others.
“You two seem to have grown even more every time I see you guys,” Jordin said, stroking the twins cheeks at the same time.
“It’s freaky how much they look like you guys even though they aren’t blood. Colin looks just like a mini Blake—poor kid—and Bliss looks like a mini female version of Chris,” Sanjaya stated.
I pushed him. “It’s better he look like me, than you, monkey boy.”
Sanjaya swatted my chest, and began making monkey noises while running around Jordin’s room (which we were all in). This caused Bliss and Colin to giggle.
Sanjaya kept doing what he was doing, and the twins laughed even harder. It was the cutest thing—even with Sanjaya involved.
Within the net half hour, Haley, Phil, Sligh, and Melinda arrived. They all lived in Nashville, and therefore had gotten the same flight. None of them had seen the twins before. Well, not in person, so this was their first time meeting the twins.
“You are the cutest little things! I hope Jake and I have babies as cute as you guys one day,” Haley said to the twins. Jake was her fiance. They had started dating only two years before, but they really seemed to love each other. He was better for her than her last fiance had been, so I was happy for her.
“They are almost as cute as my girls,” Phil said. “Okay, maybe you are cuter, but don’t tell my kids,” Phil whispered to them. He winked and smiled.
Bliss and Colin both smiled, though I’m sure they couldn’t understand him.
“Look at how cute y’all are dressed,” Melinda cooed. Bliss was wearing a pretty pink dress with white tights, white dress shoes, and a white bonnet on her head. Colin was wearing khaki pants, a blue and green plaid button-down dress shirt with a khaki colored vest, navy blue socks, and black penny loafers. His hair was slicked back.
“I think the penny loafers look stupid, but Chris insisted,” I said. “They’re geeky.”
“You’re married to a geek, so what’s the problem?” Sligh asked.
Chris elbowed him.
“What? You said yourself you’re the geek in the pink.” Sligh grinned, and wriggled his eyebrows up and down. “Ouch!” Sligh looked behind him to see who had just smacked him on the shoulder. It was Gina. “Where the hell did you come from?”
“I just walked in. Had you not been busy making lame puns, you would have heard me,” Gina answered.
Chris grinned, and hugged her. “Thank you, Gina.”
Gina smiled and hugged him back. “Any time, Geek.”
“Hey!” Chris complained.
“Sure, you can call him that,” Sligh said, rolling his eyes.
“That’s different. I’m his good friend,” Gina insisted.
Sligh shook his head. “And what am I? Chopped liver?”
“Watch it. You’ll make yourself hungry,” Jordin joked.
Sligh rolled his eyes. “Please. I don't even like liver.”
“One of the few foods he doesn't like,” Sanjaya said.
Sligh glared at him. “Anyway, the babies are as cute as pie. Okay, now I’m hungry.”
We all laughed.
LaKisha arrived then, and said hello to the twins, giving them each a new toy. Colin got a green ball, and Bliss got a pink one. “I figure now that they can walk, they’ll enjoy chasing the balls around.”
“Like Blake and Chris do with each other’s?” Sanjaya joked.
We all groaned, and the girls threw pillows at him.
Sanjaya laughed, and dodged the pillows, though he did catch one for a shield. He peered around it, then screamed like a girl and ducked as LaKisha threw another one at him.
I smirked.
Hey, Hey, the gang’s all here.

That night, after dinner, we all headed to the park. The twins loved going to the park ever since they had discovered the joys of the Chuck E. Cheese’s tunnels and slide. They especially loved the swings.
I loved watching the looks on their faces as Blake and I pushed them in the swings. Colin would hang on to the chains tightly and smile so brightly! Bliss would open her mouth as if in a silent gasp, but then she would smile, her green eyes sparkling with happiness. I lived for moments like those.
Blake and I took turns pushing the twins, and sliding down the slide with them. We even held them around the waist as they climbed across the monkey bars. They were growing up so fast. It kind of made me sad to think of them doing the monkey bars all on their own in a few years.
Our friends were so good with the twins. At dinner, when the twins were too busy playing with their food to eat it, Sligh got them to eat.
“Don’t play with your food, sillies! Its too good not to eat. See?” He ate a bite of his own food. “Mm, yummy!” He rubbed his stomach as the twins watched him. He then took both Colin’s and Bliss’ spoon, and filled them up with the twins’ macaroni and cheese. He looked at Bliss. “You like ponies.” He looked at Colin. “And you like trucks.” He looked at both of them. “Okay, how’s this?” He moved Bliss’ spoon up and down like it was a pony galloping, and he whinnied as he fed Bliss. He then made truck noises, and rushed the spoon towards Collin’s mouth.
The twins ate their food, and laughed every time Sligh made the special effects for them. Sligh had fed them the rest of their dinner, and they had eaten it without putting up a fight.
Later, Haley had helped wash the twins hands and faces, and then she showed them their reflection in her mirror. They had smiled into the mirror, looking so adorable.
Once in the park, Sanjaya made them laugh with his monkey impersonations again.
Gina took their hands and danced with them to the music that someone in the park had playing. The twins loved it, and kept giggling, and clapping their hands.
Jordin and Melinda played paddy cake with them. Of course Jordin and Melinda made a comment about the “cake” reference.
LaKisha played ball with the twins. The twins laughed, and toddled towards the balls. They were fast for just having learned to walk!
Then, in the van, on the way back to the hotel, Phil had sung the twins the sweetest little lullaby. He said he used to sing it to his girls. The twins fell asleep not long after, and went to bed easily that night.
“We have the perfect family and friends,” I said to Blake as we held each other in bed that night.
He smiled, and nuzzled his cheek against my chest. “I know. How did ever we get so lucky?” He looked up at me and grinned.
I kissed him. “I don’t know. All I know is that it started the day I met you, and continued from then on.”
His eyes lowered. “I love you.”
“I love you more,” I said.
He shook his head. “Not possible.”
We kissed again, then I flicked off the lights, and we kissed some more until we fell asleep.
