‘Home’ Jade said affectionately as the beautiful coastline of Sicily came into view as the plane descended from the clouds in a warm sun filled sky. She was so glad to be home, and shocked as hell to see who was waiting for her at the airport when she walked from the gate. There, some way back stood her beloved uncle Jamie, her grandfather, and her nunna. Nonna was the Italian word for grandmother, but the woman standing next to her grandfather was her step grandmother. She had always felt strange calling her Nonna, and auntie didn’t feel warm enough to address the woman she loved dearly, so from 8 years old Jade had called Allegra nunna instead, her own word for her. She said the 'Nu' part was like 'new', so nunna was formed since she was a new grandmother and all.
‘JAMIEEEEEEEEEEE!’ She screamed with delight as she saw her huge bear like uncle begin to walk towards her, his arms spread wide and smile of pure joy on his face to see his niece again.
‘Come here little one!’ he said in his thick New Jersey accent as she ran and jumped up into his arms, basking in his adoration for her as she looked behind and waved at her grandpa and her nunna. The family were over the moon to see her again, and also pleased to see the other girls too (who also sweetly addressed them as grandpa and nunna) and meet Slipknot who along with the others they had invited to stay at their home instead of letting them be bundled off to a hotel.
‘Cara mia’ he grandfather whispered softly as he held her face in his hands and looked at his granddaughter, immediately noticing how tired she looked.
‘I missed you so much grandpa’ said Jade, feeling a few tears slide down her cheeks as she hugged him.
‘Well now apart from your work, we have three days together. So you can catch up on all the grandpa time you need my little angel’ said Carlo, stroking her hair and reaching out to give Jess a pinch on the cheek. She reached up and held his hand, smiling at the way he always did the same thing to greet her after commenting what ‘pinchable little rosy cheeks’ she had upon his first meet with her. After the tearful hellos to her family had been made and Jade had introduced everyone to her family they left the airport and went outside to find three black Range Rovers with tinted windows and private plates parked out front.
‘Everyone get in, these are for you’ said Carlo with a smile as he opened one of the doors and ushered the assembled gathering in, before going back to where he had parked his Ferrari and opening the door for his wife.
‘Dude, I know Jade said her family were well off, but I wonder just how well off we are talking here?’ said Corey as he sat next to Jim in the plush 4x4.
‘Your guess is as good as mine!’ exclaimed Jim as he looked around the car, realizing it was a custom interior and recognising the DiMaggio crest Jade had once shown him hand stitched into the head rests. And if those alone didn’t prove just how wealthy Carlo DiMaggio was, it would be when they reached his home.
‘Shiiiiiit! Look at the side of the place!’ said Paul as they swung in under a huge terracotta stone archway up a huge rolling drive.
‘That’s the coach house my friend, we have another five minutes of driveway before we get to papa’s house’ said Jamie with humble laugh, making Paul’s eyes almost pop right out of his head. They almost fell on the floor when he got out of the limo at the ‘house’.
‘Dude this ain’t no house, it’s a mansion on top of another mansion!’ said Paul as he took in the huge homestead.
‘It’s not a bad pile of bricks huh?’ said Jamie, helping the guys with their bags and cases as each member got out and took a good long look at the beautiful house.
‘So, just how many times over are you a millionaire then Mr DiMaggio?’ asked Joey as he swung his bag over his shoulder.
‘Many. And please, call me Carlo Joey’ said Carlo with a smile. Joey then knew where Jade got not only her smile, but her bright blue eyes from. She looked very much like her grandfather. He smiled and nodded and followed the tall grey haired man into the house and looking around at the beautiful tasteful decoration that only a vast amount of money could buy, and mentally checked himself not to touch anything. If he broke something he guessed he’d have to drum until he was 40 to pay it off; this man had wealth beyond the picture Jade had painted.
‘Is that a Picasso up there?’ asked Corey, really feeling his jaw hitting the floor.
‘Correction; it’s my Picasso’ said Allegra as she stood behind him with her hands on his shoulders looking up at her priceless 50th birthday present hanging on the wall.
‘Wow’ was all Corey could say for a few moments, and Allegra smiled and giggled at his awestruck face.
‘Donald Trump has nothing on you dude! I mean sir, I mean.....’ Corey floundered as Carlo held up a hand and smiled.
‘Please, just call me Carlo. And young Donald has done very well for himself over the years, he’s worth twice what I am now which concerns me since it’s always me paying for our lunches’ said Carlo.
‘YOU KNOW DONALD TRUMP?’ exclaimed Corey at high volume.
‘He’s a business friend’ Carlo said simply, before taking the stairs at a jog and shouting back ‘follow me, I’ll show you to your rooms’. For seventy three years of age he was a remarkably fit and healthy man, and just like Allegra he did not look said age either.
‘You’re sixty eight years old? What? I don’t believe you!’ laughed Craig some time later as they all sat in the kitchen drinking coffee.
‘Ok so flatter my old lady ego, how old would you say I was?’ asked Allegra, welcoming Jade into the seat next to her in the kitchen so big Craig noted he could have parked his whole apartment in it with space to move around.
‘Fifty, if a day over that!’ said Craig, still astounded that the beautiful blonde and heavily tanned lady wearing more gold than Mr T was approaching seventy.
‘You are too kind, but really it’s luck. Us Sicilians have good genes, we age well’ said Allegra as she picked up her cappuccino and took a careful sip. Just then there was a commotion at the kitchen door, and when Jade turned around she saw another four members of the family she had missed; her grandfather’s four Dalmatian dogs bounding in.
‘Cani! Prossimi qui, acceso, nessun non fanno gli ospiti che della gobba I piedini soddisfanno!’ Said Jade in Italian, telling the dogs ‘Dogs! Come here, come on, and no don’t hump guest’s legs please!’ as Casper tried to get frisky with Paul’s leg.
‘Vada sui tipi, all'esterno ora!’ Said Allegra as she got off her seat and ushered the dogs to the back door. She had told them to go outside and off they went, loyal to their mistresses’ word. After the chaos of the dogs crashing in Allegra decided to take the nine men round the mansion and grounds on a tour, and the girls all headed up to their rooms to unpack while Carlo went back to work in his office (retirement didn’t suit him- even at his age) which left just Jade and her uncle Jamie, who was staying with at the family home whilst out in Sicily on business. He resided in his mother’s native New Jersey for most of the year, taking out a few months in summer to go home and tie up any lose ends at the Sicilian end of the multimillion dollar shipping company he and his father ran and also just to relax. He was glad that he would have a few days to spend with his favourite niece, and get to see her play live, even though her music was far from his cup of tea he was still bowled over by her talent.
'You look like you need to sleep for about a week' said Jamie to Jade as they took a stroll through the lemon groves that lined the huge rear garden.
'Two weeks is probably more fitting going on how I feel right now, I'm exhausted but having the time of my life. I love being on tour' said Jade, lighting a cigarette.
'Those things will kill you' said Jamie lightly.
'What? Smokes or tours?' said Jade, raising her eyebrows and smiling. Jamie just shook his head and put his arm around her, kissing her atop her head.
'Hopefully neither, you gotta make me a great uncle one day first' said Jamie.
'Hah! Me with a kid? Don't hold your breath Jamie!' laughed Jade.
'So it ain't kids on the cards with you and the tall fella with all the crap in his eyebrow in there then?' he replied, referring to Jim and his eyebrow bar. Jade fell silent.
'I'm waiting for an answer, and before you start with the 'nothing’s going on' horse crap, remember how well I can read people' Jamie then said, pausing by a gate that lead on to her grandfather's stock of dairy cows. Exporting Italian art was only one of the many pies he had his fingers in.
'No it isn't. And we aren't...... it's a fuck thing' said Jade, making Jamie begin to laugh.
'You act too much like a man for your own damn good sometimes, you know that?' said Jamie.
'I think it's a reasonable enough decision to come to for any smart woman who doesn't wanna be in a relationship' replied Jade, exhaling smoke from her nose as she spoke.
'Wanna talk to me about it all?' said Jamie, his friendly ear always on offer.
'I think I already am' said Jade as she turned to face him, and launch into telling her uncle how it all began. She could talk to him about anything, because from her most distant memories he had always been there, always listened and been ready with practical advice when she needed it. In short, he had been like another father figure to her. He was the one that had also saved hers and her mother’s lives on that fateful day when her biological father had attacked them both. Jamie listened carefully, pulling out his small hip flask of whisky afterward and taking a few sips, passing the bottle to his niece before he spoke.
'Okay, so here's what I think. I think if anything was going to happen, it would have happened by now. If either of you were really that interested in taking things further, one of you would have stood up and said 'Woah! Let’s quit the bullshit and just be together for real'; but neither of you has, so I wouldn't expect anything other than what you have right now. Below waist interest' said Jamie, his closing line making Jade almost laugh whisky out of her nose.
'That's kinda how I was thinking too. I think I'm doing 'a grandpa' aren't I?' said Jade, referring to her knack of worrying over nothing, just like Carlo could.
'I think you are' said Jamie with a quiet laugh through his nose as he watched the sun burn in the sky, and wondered how long it would take for it to burn his balding patch to a cinder as it always did. He rubbed his head and turned to the side to look at Jade.
'Put the factor 40 on before you end up giving yourself third degree sunburn' said Jade, rolling her eyes and knowing what he was thinking instantly.
'You know something? It's real fucking good to have you home' said Jamie, pulling her into a hug. Jade just smiled, silently agreeing it was good to be there too.
About two hours after arriving they headed over to the open air venue to sound check and prepare for the gig. Jade was so excited to be back on home turf doing a show she was impossible to tie down before they went on. Jumping up and down, dashing around this way and that like a wasp on speed, and just generally psyching herself up. Also, like her and all the other bands combined she couldn't wait to see the crowd’s reaction to their special guest who would join them to add his DJ expertise to their opening song 'Warhead'. Sid loved the song, and had asked the girls if they minded him DJ'ing over the top of it, adding his own sounds and loops to the mix. When they heard it they loved it and asked him to play it live with them.
Since they were (by his own admission) one of his favourite bands, Sid was beyond honoured, and beyond excited to play live with them. Craig had also given him some cool samples to blend in to the mix, and after he had pulled his sweatshirt hood over his head and tied a bandanna around his face ghetto style to keep himself sort of masked Sid took to the side of the stage and began to work his magic. The fans went crazy as one by one the girls entered the stage to the roaring sound of Apache helicopters blasting through the PA and the scratching of Sid's turntables begin. The song kicked in and all six people up on the stage went insane; the mix sounded a million times better live that it had when Sid had played it back to them over a laptop.
'THERE'S NO FUCKING PLACE LIKE HOME!' Jade roared in a verse break, making the crowd roar right back at her.
'Look at him, he's having the fucking time of his goddamned life up there' said Corey as he watched from the wings with Joey as Sid went berserk behind the decks, a huge smile creasing his just visible eyes. He was ecstatic. The energy that pulsed off the stage made for one hell of a moshpit, one that no less than five members of Slipknot and various roadies had decided to throw themselves right in the middle of. That show was one of the best on the whole tour, everyone but everyone had a great night, and to celebrate there was one hell of an after show party on the large airfield the show had been held at. The entire backstage area had been gated off earlier in the day, so everyone just used that as party central, building a huge fire in the middle to keep warm as the sun gave way to a cool night.
About three hours into the party Jade sneaked off to have some time alone, with just a bottle of vodka mixed with lime juice and a big joint as her company as she sat on the front of the stage and looked out over the airfield into the space that was awash with people just four hours ago. The stage rig they had played on was rented since there was another band playing there the next day, which had been extremely time saving for their road crew not to have to set up a whole stage. As she sat, listening to the noise of the party in the not so far off distance Jade turned her ears to the sounds of the airfield. She listened to the breeze and the occasional bird tweet, but most of all listened to the noise in her head, of thousands of fans screaming for her band. Their success still amazed her, even though each member had more than worked hard for it. In fact they probably worked harder than most other bands out there to get where they were because of course the stigma that followed women in the rock business was never easy to shake. Just as she was enjoying her own company she felt someone sit down beside her and turned to see Chris.
'Sup' he said simply, crossing his legs and placing his can of beer in front of them.
'Sup Chris' she said before continuing. 'I'm just sitting having a chill out, how about you? What brings you to my side friend?' she said, passing him her joint.
'I'm glad I found you finally, there's erm, something you should know' said Chris, tonguing his cheek and choosing his words carefully.
'And what would that be Christopher?' she asked, taking a swing out of her bottle of vodka and lime.
'Okay so before you go off on me and say 'he ain't my boyfriend' or any of that, I just thought I should let you know. Don't go on our tour bus for any reason. Jim's there.............................with a girl' said Chris eventually, bracing himself for some kind of torrent. It didn't come.
'Okay thanks for letting me know' said Jade simply as she continued to look out over the airfield. Chris really wasn't sure if she just wasn't bothered, or doing a damn convincing job of covering the fact she was, but sat silently next to her smoking and passing the joint to and forth, eventually rolling another of his own. Just then they were approached by Joey.
'Does she know?' he said quietly in Chris' ear.
'She knows Joey, and she doesn't give a shit either because Jim can do as he pleases. But she also thanks you for your concern' said Jade, kissing Joey on his head as he sat down between them. He gave her his usual sweet lopsided smile and rested his head on her shoulder as the three of them just sat silently getting stoned and watching the last bit of sun fade from the Sicilian sky. When it grew more chilly Jade excused herself to go and fetch her hoodie from their bus. The transport that would take them around Italy had already been sent to them, since they obviously needed them to get out of Sicily and Jade had loaded some of her things on there earlier before she sound checked. So for once actually knew where her things were instead of having to search for ages in a stoned haze desperately trying to remember where things had been put.
As she neared where the buses were parked, her ears picked up the unmistakable sound of people having sex coming from the small open window on Slipknot's tour bus. They only grew louder as she neared her bus, but standing still for a few moments as she heard Jim and whoever he was with in the throes of passion Jade realized something. She really didn't care, and the noise really didn't bother her. So she just got onto her bus, located her hoodie and got back off again without a second thought. At least it last proved to her his feelings, which she no longer had to worry about hurting.
