Carrie stretched as she once again woke up to an empty bed. She looked around to find Kelly walking in in her uniform she wore to work at the zoo.
"How do you do that?" Carrie asked, looking at the small bed then at the Texan. The only way out was to crawl over her, yet Carrie never woke.
"Magic," Kelly shrugged.
"You going to work?"
"Already went," Kelly shook her head, opening her closet to pull out a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.
"Already went?" Carrie questioned, rubbing her eyes. "What time is it?"
"Eleven-thirty. I went in at five."
"So, what? You had like two hours of sleep?"
"You get used to it," Kelly replied. "Care if I jump in the shower before you? I smell like elephant."
Carrie laughed, "Go ahead."
"Thanks," she smiled, walking out the room.
Carrie shook her head. She had never met someone quite as...alive as the shorter girl, if that even made sense.

"So, what do you have going on today?" Kelly asked as they each fixed them a bowl of cereal, Kelly apologizing once again for not having anything else.
"Um, nothing much really. Just some studying I have to do," Carrie shrugged.
"You can study here if you want," Kelly offered. "And after, I can help you with your scales and stuff."
"Seriously?"
"I told you I would."
"You are so my favorite friend."
"Um, aren't I your only friend?" she teased.
"Shut up," Carrie laughed, throwing a cheerio at her. "I so have tons of friends. I just don't want you to get jealous, that's all."
"Ah," Kelly nodded. "I see. So you're just what? Keeping them all in your basement?"
"Something like that," Carrie smiled.
"Well, tell them I said hey."
"Will do."

Kelly watched as Carrie played 'Marry Had a Little Lamb' on her keyboard as they sat on her bed, leaning against the wall.
Carrie couldn't help but feel relaxed. Kelly didn't laugh at her or fuss if she messed up. She simply took her hand with her own, and put them on the correct keys.
"You're catching on really fast," Kelly smiled as she finished. "I'd say you were a natural."
"Oh yea. Beethoven, here I come," Carrie replied sarcastically.
Kelly laughed, "Well, I never said it was going to be easy, but you really are doing well. I mean that."
"Thanks," she smiled softly. "So how do you do it?"
"Do what?"
"Drop the twang?"
"Well, before you do that, you've got to stop singing through your nose," Kelly explained. "That right there will help a hell of a lot."
"I don't sing through my nose," Carrie started to argue. "I sing through my--"
"It's an expression," Kelly cut in, not wanting the country girl to embarrass herself with the rest of her thought. "Watch. Stand up," Kelly said, taking the keyboard off her lap, and placing it to the side.
Carrie did as she was told, watching as Kelly stood right in front of her. Now she started to grow nervous.
"Sing something."
"Like what?"
"Um, just sing a C," Kelly suggested.
Carrie bit her bottom lip, going through the scale that Kelly had taught her in her head before opening her mouth to sing. Kelly couldn't help but smile at the sound of it. She definitely had a shit load of potential.
"Where are you singing from?" Kelly asked, although she already knew the answer to that as she looked down at Carrie's chest that was slowly sinking back in as the note died off.
Carrie blushed as Kelly's gaze returned to hers.
Kelly laughed softly, "Sorry. I so wasn't doing what it looked like I was doing...so where are you singing from?"
"My heart?"
"Good answer," Kelly chuckled. "But that's not what I meant. Where are you breathing from?"
"Um, my lungs," Carrie's forehead wrinkled as she looked at her confusedly.
"And that...that's the wrong answer," Kelly smiled gently. She took Carrie's hand and placed it on her own stomach. "Where am I breathing from?"
"Your stomach?" Carrie raised an eyebrow.
"Yea," Kelly nodded as Carrie withdrew her hand. "You can draw so much more air from there which in turn means more support and more power. I want you to try. It's gonna be awkward at first, but eventually, you'll draw every breath from there with out even thinking twice...which is how you should've been all along. Ok, so go on."
"I don't know," Carrie frowned, looking down at her stomach. "It's hard to breathe and talk at the same time."
Kelly fought back a laugh, "Sing. It'll be easier. You won't have to think of what to say."
Carrie nodded, opening her mouth to sing another note.
Kelly studied her carefully.
"How's that?"
"How'd it feel?"
"The same," Carrie admitted.
"That's because you weren't singing from your stomach, you were just pushing it out," Kelly grinned.
Carrie sighed.
"No, no, don't get frustrated," Kelly said quickly. "You're doing great, I promise. Just...look," she placed her hands on Carrie's stomach, watching as the other blonde's eyes widened as she looked down at them. "You've got to feel it all the way down here," Kelly explained, running her hands away from each other across Carrie's lower abdomen. "It's like...you said you were singing from your heart right?"
"Y-yea," Carrie nodded.
"Ok, well, I need you to sing from your soul. Just, you need to feel as if you're pulling it from way down in your toes, and it's coursing through your veins."
Carrie looked at her, confused, "What does that have to do with my stomach?"
"Ok, good point," Kelly frowned, her hands resting on Carrie's hips. She looked at them thoughtfully as she brought her right hand over to the center of her stomach. "Have you ever felt something so strong, whether happy or otherwise, that you felt it all the way in the pit of your stomach--the depths of your being, some would say?"
"Yea," Carrie said softly after a moment.
"That's where you need to sing from," Kelly replied, pressing her stomach gently. "That place way down inside of you, deep in your gut. Sing from there, ok?"
Carrie nodded as she took a deep breath before opening her mouth once more to sing.
"A little more," Kelly said, pushing on her stomach, smiling as the note rang out clearly.
The sound fell off, and Carrie stopped, out of breath, "How was that?"
"You tell me."
"It felt so cool," she nodded.
"It sounded pretty dang cool too," Kelly laughed.
"Really?"
"Yea, and I mean, I'm by no means saying that you didn't sing beautifully before cause you did, but that...that was so much better. You've definitely got something special."
Carrie smiled, wrapping her in a hug. Kelly giggled softly, removing her hand that was pinned between the two of them and wrapped her arms around the other girl as well, hugging her tightly. She heard Carrie yawn in her ear, and she smiled, rubbing her back as they pulled apart.
"Tired?"
"Too much studying," she frowned. "What time is it?"
Kelly turned to her small alarm clock by her bedside table, "Um, 1:30."
"In the morning?"
"No, we're just having an eclipse right now, that's why it's dark out," Kelly grinned.
"Man, my dad's gonna be pissed at me for being out this late," Carrie sighed.
"No worries," Kelly smiled gently. "You can stay here. Just use my phone to call them and let them know, ok? I don't want to wake up to find a search party out there looking for you."
"Thanks, where are you going?"
"Shower and bed. I'm dead on my feet right now."
Carrie immediately felt guilty as she noticed the dark circles under the other girl's eyes that were drooping, "I'm sorry for keeping you up so late. I mean, I know you hardly got any sleep last night--"
"It's not your fault," Kelly assured her. "If I wanted to go to bed, I would've told you to shut up, but I didn't. I was having fun."
++++++++++++
Carrie laughed tiredly as Kelly crawled over her, "You could've asked me to get up for you."
"I didn't know if you were asleep yet," Kelly replied. "Did you set the alarm?"
"Yea, and I had to set it a little early because we've got to stop at my house to pick up my books and stuff," Carrie said, apologetically.
"That's ok," Kelly yawned.
"Kelly?" Carrie began carefully.
"Yea?"
"Where you sing from...is it happy or otherwise?" she asked curiously.
Kelly took a deep breath, thinking back to the feeling when her dad left them, completely ripping their family apart, and the way her stomach used to churn every time her mom would talk about him to her, tearing him down. It was nearly twelve years later, and she could still taste the bitterness of it in her mouth. "Otherwise," she replied softly. "Now get some sleep."
"You too."
