Meanwhile back at Reita's apartment, Kira was sitting cross-legged on Reita's bed. Having just finished her pep talk with Mika, she'd closed her clamshell phone and just smiled as she stared at nothing in particular. She wasn't shocked about the conversation, just a mixture of relief and pride - because she was relieved and proud that Mika was finally deciding what she wanted. Ever since the five girls had met ... it was Kira, Ai, Megumi and Kikyo who thought of Mika is their younger sister. They were always guiding her and giving her advice; even though they were close to the same age there was just that little problem of Mika's naivety. She was just naturally innocent and gentle, so when the girls first met the guys ... that's when they worried about her crush on Ruki.
But having spent some time with Reita, Kira came to learn a lot of things about Ruki that made her feel at ease for Mika's sake. For most of the late afternoon during their dinner, Kira had been sussing out Ruki's real personality from Reita (many thanks to Reita's willingness to ease Kira's worries for Mika). It was a rather interesting listen, seeing it was Reita, Ruki and Uruha who had been the closest friends through school ... so the three of them were much closer in pre-Gazette days. And it was these insights into the person behind 'Ruki' that made Kira realise just how much Mika and Ruki were made for each other. It was the kind of love-story that you hardly hear about anymore ... and that was what made Kira smile. She took one last look down at the phone cradled in her hands before standing up to go back to the lounge.
When she opened the door and came back out into the dimly lit room, she noticed Reita sprawled out on the sofa. One elbow was resting on the arm of the sofa so that hand could prop his head up while watching the TV, and the other hand was just draped leisurely over his side. One leg was stretched out while the other was bent at the knee, that foot parallel to his other knee. Kira loved how he was dressed much more sloppy when at home - dark grey track-pants, tight fitting black t-shirt and the usual super flat hair. Kira had changed to loose red pyjama pants and a short-sleeve white top. Her hair was pulled up into a messy ponytail. Reita didn't look up when Kira came back out of his room but she knew he would have realised.
She skulked back over to the sofa and proceeded to crawl along up the length of his body until she was on her hands and knees above him. Then without a pause she claimed his mouth in a romantic kiss while her hands found their way up under his shirt. Reita made a content sound and hooked an arm around her waist, and then shifting so his body was flat on the sofa, thereby Kira could lie flat against him. Kira abruptly stopped and, taking one hand out from under Reita's shirt, rested that elbow beside Reita's shoulder and propped her head up to look at him.
"What, that's it?"
Was the first thing Reita said. Kira giggled and continued to trail her fingers over his chest.
"It's not midnight yet! Anyway I was just talking to Mika, as you know. I think she's gonna go for it".
"Go for what?"
"You know what I'm talking about!"
Kira lightly slapped Reita's chest under the shirt, to which he flinched and laughed.
"Alright, alright!"
Kira looked down at Reita's chest while resuming the finger-traces.
"She was confused so I helped her figure some things out, and I talked to her about what she really wanted. I mean ... there was one thing holding her back, but it wasn't the thought of the painful first time".
"What was it?"
"Umm ... I can't really say, just something to do with her parents. Anyway I discussed with her about her feelings ... then when she was going, to me she sounded different. Like something had changed".
Reita nodded slowly at the ceiling while he listened. He placed a hand up behind his head and looked thoughtful.
"Wow ... so her first time will be with him? That's a big decision ..."
"I know. You said before he was always waiting for the one person, right? The first girl fell through, so what exactly is he looking for? What does Mika have that this other chick didn't?"
Maybe it was Kira's imagination but Reita seemed to have a standoffish expression for a split second.
"Well uh ... I don't remember the other girl, it was way back in the middle of Senior High. But I can tell you that what Ruki is looking for ... neither Uruha or I know. I think ..."
Reita trailed off and frowned as he tried to explain.
"It's like ... he can feel when something is right. I don't know how to explain it properly and there's probably no way I can but ... he just knows. Even if you ask him yourself he might not be able to tell you ... hell, Uruha and I have known him for about ten years and we've never worked it out".
Kira let out a gentle sigh and stared at no particular spot on the back of the sofa.
"I guess ... it's just something only he knows?"
"Exactly, which was something I could never understand. Mika is only the second girl he's ever made time for ... so he must know something".
Kira smiled, feeling somewhat reassured at these words. She was still curious about Ruki's first girlfriend though ... and why had Reita seemed distracted when she brought up the subject? Perhaps he knew more than he was letting on; that it was just between him, Ruki and Uruha. Whatever the reason she knew not to press on the subject - it was really none of her business, especially seeing she had only been Reita's girlfriend for less than a day. Reita glanced down at Kira's distant expression and rubbed her back.
"Hey, enough talking about the past, it makes me feel old".
Kira laughed and placed a couple of small kisses to his collarbone.
"Reita, you're not old. In fact ... your nowhere near it ..."
She left a teasing soft bite to the same spot, the hand under his shirt trailed in zigzags down his chest and it found its way over his hip to firmly squeeze his backside. Reita let out a short groan of pleasure before catching Kira's gaze again. He sighed shortly.
"You expect me to wait until midnight with the way your acting?"
"You bet I do".
Kira teased with a little giggle. Reita threw his head back against the arm of the sofa and grunted in annoyance. How was he expected to wait another hour for to get to have sex with Kira again for the start of the New Year? If she kept teasing him like she was, he'd have to do something about it and soon ... every little thing she did to him was quite a turn-on. Luckily Kira stopped and shifted so she could continue watching the televised celebrations, still lying completely on top of Reita now with her head lying on his chest. Reita tightened his grip around her waist and kissed the top of her head before returning to the TV ... he was glad not to be out in that mass of people.
* * *
Backtracking to Uruha's party, the game of Truth or Dare had died pretty quickly because they were running out of good dares and truth questions to ask. They had managed to go around at least two more times, completing everyone a total of three times each. The dares had to be pretty low-key seeing they couldn't really leave his apartment - on account of possibly being caught by fans out in the street. Even the truth questions were thinning out ... there was only so many times the question 'do you like so-and-so?' could be asked before it got really old. But it was an interesting test to suss-out just what they all thought of each other - Uruha and Kikyo, Aoi and Ai, Kai and Megumi.
From what Kikyo was guessing, Uruha did seem to really like her but that might just be combined with the amount of booze he'd had so far. Megumi also thought that Kai liked her a lot too, but he was always to friendly and caring with everyone that it was hard to know for sure ... and then there was Aoi. Ai couldn't tell what he thought of her ... even though when he was asked the question he did say 'of course, I like her a lot!' Maybe it was all just her imagination but his response didn't sound like it would mean anything more ... that he wasn't interested in a relationship with her. Or maybe he'd just had quite a few drinks and that made his response sound different? Ai was thinking of all different reasons why he'd answer funny until she realised she was thinking about it way too much.
"Ai, come on and dance!"
Kikyo's voice suddenly cut into her thoughts and before she knew it, Kikyo had gripped both of her wrists and dragged her onto the 'dance-floor'. Ai had been staring distracted out of the glass doors leading to Uruha's balcony, of course mulling over her feelings for Aoi ... and what he really thought of her. Megumi and Kikyo had seen their friend having a staring competition with her reflection, therefore pulled her out of her stupor. Ai decided to stop thinking and just have fun, so she danced with Megumi and Kikyo along to songs from Luna Sea, Nickelback and Linkin Park. The group had decided a change of band was in order ... courtesy of Aoi and Kai for the Linkin Park and Nickelback CD's. The guys hadn't gotten into dancing yet, as they just stood off to the side and watched.
"Guys come on, you can't just watch us all night!"
Megumi urged them to join in, gesturing with both hands as she spun around a couple of times. The three guys laughed and looked a bit sheepish as Uruha and Kai hid behind their Champagne glasses; Aoi hid behind his beer bottle. They weren't really used to dancing - not counting the dancing they did on stage, and even then it wasn't really dancing. While Ai and Kikyo kept dancing but urging them to join, Megumi stopped, hands on hips and looking at them as if to say 'Get over here now!'
"U-uh I'm going to go have a smoke first ..."
Uruha said as an excuse and he quickly made a wide detour around the edge of the room, but not before snatching his pack of cigarettes from the coffee table that was jammed against the wall. In case you hadn't already realised, the furniture had been pushed back against the walls to make way for the 'dance-floor' just in front of Uruha's TV and sound system.
"On that note, I think I will too!"
Aoi added as he too made a break for the balcony doors, leaving poor Kai standing there with nowhere to go. Megumi pointed at Kai and then pointed to the floor, again in the way to say 'Move it!' Kai's head dropped in defeat as he set his glass down on the coffee table and walked over to join the girls - luckily the song 'Animals' by Nickelback was a decent song to dance too. Ai and Kikyo were amused to see Kai dancing and Megumi of course loved it - he wasn't bad. He wasn't ridged or awkward like some guys danced ... he was genuinely having fun. Meanwhile outside, Uruha and Aoi were spying on the others inside while they really did have a smoke. They couldn't help but laugh while watching their fellow band mate dancing. Finally they returned to chatting.
"Wow, so he can flirt! Wasn't expecting that ..."
Aoi teased the drummer as he stuck the cigarette between his lips and perched himself up on the wall of the balcony. Uruha laughed and seated himself on the large, soft, single-seat chair squeezed into the corner - at least his balcony was under-cover so the fabric of the chair didn't get too weather-beaten. Uruha blew a stream of smoke from his mouth and glanced up at Aoi.
"Hey what's going on with you and Ai-chan? Since that Truth or Dare game you've been really distant".
Aoi looked sideways at Uruha and then turned away while taking the cigarette from his mouth. He let a slow stream of smoke from between his lips but didn't say a word. Uruha got impatient.
"Well? Do you even like her, man?"
"Sure I do ..."
"You don't sound very convincing".
Aoi looked at Uruha before turning away again - he hated being confronted on sensitive subjects, especially when he couldn't escape. If he stayed outside he'd have Uruha on his back, but if he went inside he'd get dragged into dancing ... with Ai. Aoi lowered his head to stare at the floor of the balcony.
"You just don't get it ... I do like her, really ... it's just complicated".
"Bullshit! What's complicated?"
"It's my parents".
Uruha couldn't believe what he was hearing - since when did Aoi have to answer to his parents at almost twenty-eight years of age? Aoi let out a silent sigh as he kept his gaze on the floor, while biting his lip ring anxiously.
"Your lucky, your parents are letting you make your own life. With me it's different ... I'm almost thirty and they think something's wrong with me because I haven't married or had kids. I even bought a damn house just so they'd stop bugging about that ... now they're hounding me about wanting grandchildren."
Aoi flicked a small bit of ash from his cigarette so roughly that he almost dropped it - he was gradually getting pissed off just thinking about. Uruha listened without saying anything, but when Aoi didn't speak again he took that chance.
"Man, your big enough and ugly enough to do anything you want. Just because your almost thirty with no family of your own yet doesn't mean there's something wrong. Look at half of the musicians around Japan who are in their forties and they've never been married or had kids".
"Yeah but ... I think I would get married one day, and maybe have a kid ... but I just want my parents to lay-off! Let me do it all when I'm ready, you know. That's what scares me about liking Ai ... what will happen if she finds out my parents are grandchild-hungry?"
Uruha drew back on his cigarette again and leaned back in the chair, crossing his legs at the same time. He could see why Aoi was so angry ...
"Well ... maybe it's about time you stuck up for yourself ..."
"Uruha, I'm not telling them to go jump if that's what you mean".
"Well do you want them to be on your case forever?"
"I think I can find a more tactful way of telling them to stop, thankyou".
Uruha shrugged and drew back on his cigarette again - he didn't believe Aoi would tell his parents to back off. He was very conscious of pleasing his parents, even if he was in a rock band. Kai was also one to have traditional parents and they too worried about when their son would have a family ... the difference was they weren't bugging him constantly like Aoi's family. Uruha's family weren't that bad and just left him alone. Reita's family consisted of only females since his father had died, so they were close but not on the verge of annoying each other. Ruki's family were pretty normal and slightly conservative people, which was why they weren't excited about his music career ... but they did still love him and hoped he'd settle down one day.
"Aoi ... do me a favour ... just forget about your parents and get to know Ai. Who says you have to introduce her to your parents? Keep your relationship a secret".
"And who says she'd even like me the same way?"
Uruha snorted and leaned forward onto his knees.
"Are you blind? She may be a bit hard to read but Ai does like you. I'm pretty sure I've heard from her friends that you were always her favourite in our band".
Aoi raised his eyebrows as if to say 'really?' and then he quickly glanced around the doorframe to look in on Ai. She was still dancing with Kikyo while funnily enough Kai was holding Megumi's hand and twirling her around every so often. Aoi watched Ai for a moment and then sat up straight again. He gave a heavy sigh.
"I guess I could get to know her ... if I can see what she thinks of me. Hiding a relationship from my parents could work too ... might even be fun as well".
"Now you're catching on".
Uruha smirked and winked at his fellow guitarist - having a secret relationship would certainly give those two that rush of excitement that came with sneaking around behind parents backs. And if it gave him the chance to really know Ai, then Aoi would be prepared to hide it from them - as long as she was comfortable with the idea. Aoi finished the last of his cigarette and then jumped off the balcony wall to butt it out in the tall cylinder ashtray that sat beside Uruha's chair.
"Well ... maybe we should go back inside. I think I feel like dancing now".
Uruha laughed in his throat while he too finished his cigarette and put it into the ashtray. As he stood up Aoi held his hand out to Uruha.
"And thanks for talking to me ... it really helped".
"Ah don't worry about it ... one friend to another, ne?"
Uruha gave Aoi's hand a friendly light backhand before going to shake his hand - one of those best-friend handshakes that showed just how close they were. Uruha always thought of Aoi as an older brother-type - in fact all of the guys thought of each other as brothers - but despite the fact that Aoi was the oldest ... sometimes it was him who needed some advice. Even though they hadn't known each other as long as Uruha knew Reita and Ruki ... maybe they just bonded the most from both playing guitar? That was a little joke they'd come up with one day a couple of years ago and it was their excuse. Aoi smiled thankfully at Uruha and gripped his hand tightly. Uruha pointed at the balcony doors.
"Go on, get back in there. I'm going to make sure you do dance with Ai-chan".
"In that case, you'd better dance with Kikyo too ... or else ..."
"Or else what?"
Uruha shoved Aoi in the direction of the doors and Aoi pulled one door open.
"I don't know yet".
Was all he replied, and Uruha followed him inside while laughing to himself. The two of them had just walked into the girls and Kai still dancing - now they were dancing to 'Runaway' by Linkin Park. Quite a slower pace compared to 'Animals' from Nickelback but they were impressed by how well their drummer could still move. Although the girls looked strange in winter-warmer clothes (this music was more suited to a thundering concert filled with people in rock-style clothing) they were still having fun. Aoi and Uruha circled the room back around to stand in their original place. Kai noticed them and did a little dance as he went over to them.
"Hey guys where have you been, this is great!"
Uruha and Aoi couldn't help but laugh at Kai's red face and bright eyes - he was half wasted. Aoi spoke.
"The God of Smoking was calling to us. It looks like your having fun though".
"Yeah, I haven't danced in a long time. I'm surprised I still remember ..."
Kai glanced over his shoulder and when Megumi waved to him he returned it. Kai grinned back at his band mates while gesturing to the dance-floor.
"Come on, Kikyo and Ai need dance partners. You owe them, remember!"
Kai was suddenly dragged backwards - it was Megumi, who had got hold of his hand and pulling away. Uruha and Aoi laughed, as Kai got straight back into dancing. They then looked at each other - they did promise out on the balcony to join in after all. Aoi took of his leather jacket to reveal the long-sleeve black shirt underneath, and throwing it aside he jumped in to dance with Ai. She was a little stunned at first but when he took her hands and spun her around a couple of times she laughed and got into it. Kikyo grinned and gestured for Uruha to join her too. He too removed his black jacket, also threw it aside and stepped in to dance. He took hold of Kikyo's hand, wrapped the other arm around her waist and dripped her. Kikyo made a soft squeak sound and laughed up at him.
"I'm glad you finally decided to join us!"
Kikyo said over the music as Uruha stood her up again and twirled her once. Uruha grinned and bent down to speak in her ear, trying to be heard over the music.
"Sorry I had to talk to Aoi. He was worried about his feelings for Ai ..."
"He really likes her?"
Kikyo pulled back to look excited and hopeful at him. Uruha nodded quickly. Kikyo placed a hand on his shoulder to keep him down low enough for her to speak into his ear too - he was so much taller than her.
"Ai was also worried too ... since the game she thought Aoi seemed strange. She really likes him, so she thought he didn't like her at all".
"Well ... I wouldn't worry about that anymore".
Uruha pulled back to give her a knowing smile, then placing a finger to his lips - it was his way of telling Kikyo to not say a word to anyone. Kikyo grinned happily and went back to dancing with Uruha. She snuck a quick glance over to Aoi and Ai; Kikyo's heart skipped a beat - they were genuinely having fun together, smiling brightly at each other and even talking! Kikyo was glad to see them this way, even if Ai was a bit cynical about everyone getting together - who said there weren't allowed to be five happy couples in their group? Megumi had also glanced over at Ai and when she was satisfied Ai was happy again, just smiled over at Kikyo with a quick exchange of thumbs up.
--
It was now just after a quarter past eleven and after another full ten minutes of dancing (equalled about three more songs) everyone had to sit down - right in the middle of the dance-floor too. Aoi was the only one to be lying down with hands clasped behind his head. Ai was sitting just above his head, Kai and Megumi were sitting cross-legged beside each other, Uruha also sat with legs crossed but Kikyo sat beside him with legs stretched out in front. The girls once again had their Champagne glasses filled by Uruha, while Kai and Aoi had their usual wine and beer. Music from Luna Sea was now playing in the background but turned down quieter. The group was now just casually chatting while waiting for the New Year to come around.
"Okay so what is everyone's New Years resolution? I haven't thought about mine yet".
Kikyo said looking thoughtful while circling her finger around the rim of his glass.
"I never bother because I always forget ... or turned lazy".
Came Aoi who was still on the floor. Uruha, Kikyo, Kai and Megumi laughed at his flat tone - the girls thought he was serious but Uruha and Kai knew he was only joking. He was never lazy with his New Years resolution ... it just took a while for him to get going that's all. Ai laughed at him too and leaned over so she was looking down at him.
"Well ... why not try again? Pick something that you know you'll finished".
"Yeah, it doesn't have to be hard. I decided to really get a head start on getting my café business running. I'm dying to get it started, then I can leave the Superb Mart".
When Megumi looked at Kai he gave her a reassuring smile, to show he had faith in her ability. She smiled too and turned back to the group. Kai was next.
"I guess ... I just want the New Year to be bigger and better for our band. Nothing would make me happier than to see us get bigger".
Uruha and Aoi smiled warmly - they had the same idea ... and they believed Reita and Ruki would be thinking the same thing. Kikyo, Megumi and Ai felt light-hearted at what Kai wished for - they too felt the same ... although also hoping they'd still get to see each other. Uruha was next.
"Yeah I'd like that too ... but I think I also hope to quit smoking".
"Traitor!"
Bellowed Aoi from the floor again. The girls laughed at Aoi but then praised Uruha at the same time.
"That's great, Uruha!"
"Yeah, I've been thinking it's about time I tried to stop. Before it affects how I perform".
The girls clapped to give him encouragement. Kai gave him a gentle pat on the shoulder and even though Aoi was upset at loosing a smoking partner, he sat up to pat him on the back. Then Ai took the opportunity to give Aoi a light slap in the back.
"Hey, why don't you resolve to quit smoking too?"
"Now see, that's one of those forgetful or lazy moments I was talking about".
Aoi turned around to hold up a finger to Ai in 'point of order'. Ai puffed her cheeks out and frowned at him before crossing her arms in annoyance - damn men are hopeless, she thought. Aoi leaned back on his hands and looked thoughtful.
"Aside from the band getting big, I guess I just want to develop myself better as a person".
Everyone just looked at Aoi, somewhat surprised at what I wished for. But a person never really finishes developing; it's a life-long process ... so he was quite wise in saying that. Even Aoi was dumfounded at what he said - where the hell did that come from, he thought with raised eyebrows. Next it was Kikyo's turn to think.
"Hmm I really don't know of anything I need to improve on. I guess practice my guitar more, that's obvious ... but I'd love to travel somewhere I've never been".
"Sounds good. Modest answer, I hope you get to travel too. See amazing things".
Kai encouraged her with a smile. Kikyo gave a little laugh and blushed - it wasn't exactly a modest answer, just something she'd always wanted to do ... and without parents around either; just on her own. Then Kikyo smiled to Ai, to let her know it was her turn. Ai sighed and thought.
"Well ... like Megumi, I hope to get a business started too. I did a University course in Hair Styling Design for four years and also Business Management. So I'm qualified to start a hair salon. I'll finally get out of that damn supermarket along with Megumi".
"That's awesome!" "That's great!"
Everyone said in unison and Ai laughed, lowering her head as she started to blush. Aoi placed a hand on Ai's shoulder and looked shocked at her.
"Hey if you have a hair salon, does that mean if we come to you we get half price?"
"Don't be a jerk!"
Uruha slapped Aoi in the back of the head, who grunted and gripped his head with both hands. Kai bit his bottom lip to stop himself from laughing, but Kikyo, Megumi and Ai didn't bother holding it in. Uruha shook his head and looked apologetically at Ai. She smiled and shook her head to say 'its okay'. While Aoi sat looking grumpy like a ten year old boy, Ai pat his leg softly.
"Well ... we'll see. I have to get the place going first. But I guess ... if your willing to let me hack your hair to pieces, then I can give you guys a special price".
"Alright!"
Aoi cheered pumping two fists into the air and flopping back onto the floor. Again everyone laughed at him - he was certainly the clown of the night. But it seemed like all of them had a good year to look forward too. Although the girls also secretly hoped to be able to hang around with the guys a lot, they kept that to themselves. There was no sense in making the guys feel guilty if they had to work. Just because the girls had become close friends with them, it didn't mean they would drag the guys from their job. They were fans just like anyone else, so if the band didn't work, there would be no Gazette ... and that wouldn't be a good thing considering they wanted to get bigger. In forty-five minutes time the band would be starting an even better year ... just like they wished.

NOTES:
1) Reita, Uruha and Ruki: I may have talked about this before but they seemed to know each other well before meeting Aoi and Kai. So it's possible they went to the same school in Kanawaga? Anyway don't quote me on it, but this will have significants in the future
2) Ruki was waiting: Wow thats romantic! Anyways probably no-one knows if Ruki ever had more than one girlfriend but in order for my story to work, this is the path its going to take. You'll find out soon ...
3) Reita's pause: When he's asked about Ruki high school girlfriend, you'll notice he hesitates. Is it just me or is he hiding something?
4) Change of music: I chose these three bands for a few reaons - Luna Sea because the Gazette is inspired by this group, Nickelback because they are one of Kai's favourite bands (plus he likes the drums) and also Linkin Park because Reita likes this group (and of course like Kai, Reita likes the bass)
5) Kai dancing: We never see poor Kai dance because he's always sitting! But I can imagine it hmmmm
6) Aoi's parents: Of course I don't know what his family is like, but something will happen later in my story
7) The other guys parents: I imagine Kai's family to be kind of traditional but not nagging, Reita has a mother, grandmother and sister (no mention of Father or grandfather) so I assumed his father and grandfather died (please don't hurt me if I'm wrong lol), Uruha might have a fairly normal family and I read that Ruki was once kicked out of home for wanting to be in a rock band but now they're okay ... hense why I mentioned Ruki's family possibly being quiet, a little conservative. All this info will have significants, I promise
8) New Years resolution: Of course Kai wishes the band to be bigger and better, Uruha wants to quit smoking, Aoi wishes to grow as a person, Megumi hopes to start an cafe, Kikyo wants to travel and Ai wants to open a hair salon ... very aspiring, if I do say so myself. You'll see ...
