Jack and Lily-Rose were sitting watching Sponge Bob Squarepants. Johnny dropped down on the couch next to them, clearly frustrated. Jack looked at him curiously.
“Daddy, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing, Jack. Daddy is just mad because woman are confusing.” He scooped up his son.
“No, we’re not.” Lily-Rose looks up. “We’re pretty easy, when you think about it.”
Well, of course he didn’t think his daughter was anywhere near a woman, but Johnny wasn’t one to turn down good advice. Maybe she could be on to something. He gave her a smile.
“How’s that?”
“All you have to do is agree with everything we say, give us lots of chocolate, rub our feet, and say you’re sorry when you make us mad!” she said it like he should have known the whole time.
“It’s really that simple?” Johnny rolled his eyes. His daughter shrugged. Maybe she was more of a woman than he had given her credit for.
“Look, Patrick’s going to eat a Krabby Pattie!” she pointed to the screen.
The children were lost once gain to that magic talking sponge. Johnny failed to see his appeal. He didn’t even dress particularly special. Hell, if Johnny walked around in that pants and tie combo, everyone would make fun of him. He was mulling this over when Charity announced breakfast, not looking him in the eyes.
**
We sat around the table. I was careful to look only at my plate, or only at the children. I tried to pretend that Johnny was a ghost, or a monster. Monsters can only attack you if you look at them.
The kids gobbled down their breakfasts and hurried to go and get dressed and washed for the door. I took the plates to the sink and began to clean them.
“Charity, why are you acting this way?”
“Acting what way?” I said carefully.
“Acting like any moment I’m going to bite that pretty little head of yours off!” he sighed. He came and stood behind me, putting his hands on my hips and his chin on my shoulder.
“I’m not. Please don’t,” I made to brush him off. Before I could even think, he spun me around and gripped my upper arms.
“Charity! Please stop it!” he locked eyes with me. I flinched, thinking for a second he was going to hit me, or shake me until my teeth rattled. Instantly his grip loosened. I should have known that he wasn’t that sort of man. “Nothing has to change.”
“Oh, so now I’m supposed to go back to pretending that I don’t feel for you at all! Lying down with me all night meant nothing to you, and I’m nothing to you. I see the way this goes.” I snapped. I pulled his hands off of me and hurried upstairs to finish getting the kids ready.

She left before he could think of anything else to say to her. He stood in the kitchen, staring at the sink full of dirty dishes. He could hear her upstairs, laughing and talking with his children. His throat felt tight.
Charity had it all wrong. She was especially wrong when she said she was nothing to him. He had just thought she wanted the world to go back to the way it was. He would gladly take life without having her love him to life without her at all. Johnny picked up a sponge and began to scrub the dishes.
Charity came down a few minute later, holding Lily-Rose and Jack by the hands.
“We’re going to the park for awhile. We’ll be back for lunch and some dress up.” She said stiffly. Jack looked from one to the other, clearly confused. Johnny could only nod.
When she left, the house seemed cold and empty. Of course she had the kids with her, but the house always seemed different without her. Maybe it was just because he missed having a woman around. That must have been it.
He put the last dish in the cupboard and suddenly, an idea hit. Maybe Lily-Rose was onto something when she had made her suggestions. He wiped his hands on a dishtowel and grabbed his keys. He needed to be back when they came home from the park.

“Charity?” Jack asked as he sat with his sister and me on the grass. The children had been running around and I thought that they could use a break before we headed home for the day. I smiled at the boy with dirty knees and faint sun burn on his cheeks.
“Yes?”
“Are you and Daddy mad at each other?”
“Um… Well no, why would you say that?” I felt myself going red as I tucked some of my hair behind my ears.
“Because you didn’t look at him at breakfast.” I’d forgotten how little kids pick up on things. I busied myself getting wipes out of my purse and attacking his face with them.
“I was just thinking, that’s all. What would you like for lunch?” I tried to change the subject.
The kids seemed to go along with it and held my hands as we crossed the street home. They chattered on about this and that, about maybe putting together a play when we got home. Lily-Rose wanted to do something about a princess, and Jack wanted to do something about dinosaurs.
I unlocked the door and stepped in. To my surprise, Johnny was waiting there. He was holding a bunch of pink flowers and some chocolate bars. I stopped in the door way as the kids stared.
“Daddy, why did you buy those?” Jack asked, confused.
“For Charity, because she’s such a lovely lady.”
“Johnny…” I said softly. I closed the door behind me. “You know you didn’t have to do that.”
“Yeah, I did.” He held out the flowers to me. I reached out to take them when I heard the door behind me opening. I turned and saw one of the most beautiful women in the world standing behind me.
“Johnny! I have missed you!” a French accent said.
“Vanessa?” he gaped. I felt the color draining out of my face.
