Chapter 16 – New Beginnings
He sat back down on the bed trying to figure out how everything went so badly so quickly. “I can’t go out like this” he thought, “maybe tonight is still salvageable….I’m never gonna know unless I try.” With that, he pulled off his jacket and proceeded to quickly wash up and change clothes. Foregoing shoes and socks, he put on a pair of old worn button fly jeans (her favorites) and a soft cream-colored sweater. He dashed downstairs barefoot and lit the fireplace in the den, then moving to the kitchen found a tablecloth and spread it out on the floor in front of the sofa. Finding everything that she had put together for dinner he served up two plates placed one of the roses in a champagne flute and set everything up in front of the fire.
“Okay” he said aloud, “one picnic for two coming up….now all I need is the girl.” Taking the stairs two at a time he reached the second floor landing and knocked gently on her door. At first there was no response, although he could hear her moving around and see the light shining out from under her door. Knocking again he called out to her,
“Raven, are you still up?”
“What is it?” she said sharply.
“Would you come to the door please?”
“Whatever it is can’t it wait until morning?”
“No, it can’t I need you to come downstairs…”
Opening the door just a crack she looked out at him saying, “What’s so important that it can’t wait until morning?”
“Would you come downstairs please?”
“Look Vin, I’m tired, I really don’t feel like playing these gam- -“
He didn’t give her the opportunity to finish her sentence. Gently pushing the door open he grabbed her firmly by the hand saying, “Come with me.”
Pulling her behind him as he headed downstairs her feeble protests of “It’s late, I’m Tired,” were ignored. Leading her to the den he pulled her around the side of the sofa, she was just about to throw out another weak excuse when she saw the picnic laid out on the floor,
“Can’t we do this tomorr--.” Her eyes finally came to rest on the mini-feast that Vin had prepared.
“What in the world?” she said with a look of pleased astonishment on her face, “I thought you were going to shower and turn in?”
“I promised you dinner” he said smiling, “and even though I’m not officially the cook, the least I can do is serve it properly…,” then bowing slightly at the waist in an ushering motion he said, “After you.” Taking her hand he helped her to settle herself on the floor, and then seated himself across from her. Pouring her a glass of wine and raising his cranberry juice he offered a toast,
“To new beginnings,” he said enthusiastically, “for the boys, and for us.”
“New beginnings!” she said in agreement, she was just placing the glass to her lips when the phone rang. Glancing momentarily at the mantle clock Vin moved in closer to her and said, “Let it ring baby,” nuzzling her neck affectionately he said “tonight is just about us, okay?”
“Hummm sounds good …but what if it’s the boys? They should be landing just about this time.”
“You’re right,” Vin said as his protective instincts kicked in, “I’d better get it, it could be them.” Raven sipped her wine slowly as Vin crossed the room and answered the phone, she couldn’t help but think to herself how much she loved it when he was like this, sweet and attentive.
“Hello?”
“Yes….May I speak to Jicarilla please?”
Even if he hadn’t called her by that damn name Vin would have recognized the voice instantly.
“We’re a little busy right now, perhaps you could call back tomorrow” Vin said as politely as he could.
Raven turned asking, “Who is it honey?”
“It’s your friend,” he said coolly.
“Oh,” she said as she stood up, “I’ll take it,” as she reached for the phone Vin covered the receiver and gently admonished her, “Don’t let him keep you baby, your dinner will get cold….”
She nodded in agreement, taking the phone and deposited herself in the side chair for what she thought would be a brief conversation. As she placed the receiver to her ear she could hear the sounds of a party that was obviously in full swing.
“Hello?”
“Jicarilla! Everyone here is asking for you!”
“Eric, it’s a little late to be…”
“I know, I know” he shouted above the noise of the partygoers, “But my father wanted to speak to you, and you know how the old man is when he wants something….hold on for a second, here he is….”
While Raven waited for Standing Elk to make his presence known on the phone she glanced over at Vin. Sitting there in front of the fire swirling the juice in his glass, she marveled at how the firelight made his skin appear so golden. “He’s trying so hard” she thought to herself, “that’s got to count for something.” She sat remembering other evenings in front of the fire, just the two of them, before everything got so crazy. More than anything she wanted that back. As she sat patiently through Standing Elk and all the other relatives and friends who ‘just wanted to say hi,’ she could see Vin slowly becoming more and more impatient, more and more distant. When Eric finally retrieved the phone almost 20 minutes had passed.
Trying to politely extricate herself from the conversation she stood and paced across the room to the window saying “Eric, I’ve got to get off now, it’s getting late, besides you’ll be here tomorrow for dinner and you can tell me all about it then.” But Eric knew that as long as he continued talking that she wouldn’t just ‘hang up’ on him, and he chattered on knowing full well the effect it must be having on her ‘guest’.
Moreover, he was right, when Raven finally turned back to face the room Vin was climbing the stairs, after 35 minutes of waiting for her to end the call he’d had enough. Dinner was cold, the fire had died down, and the mood was certainly broken. He’d promised himself that he would do whatever he had to do to get her back, but the one thing he would not do, would not allow, was for her to put another man before him.
Seeing Vin heading upstairs Raven quickly and unceremoniously halted Eric’s conversation with, “Eric I can’t sit on the phone all night I’ll talk to you tomorrow, G’night.” By that time it was too late; Vin had entered Craig’s room, closed the door behind him and turned off the lights.
Raven stood in the den looking at the remnants of what should have been a perfect evening.
“No sense in trying to talk to him now” she thought, “it would almost have been better if he’d gotten angry, but for him to just walk out without saying anything…he’s really pissed.” “If I try to approach him now it will only make things worse, better just let him cool off and talk in the morning.”
“I’ll clean this up tomorrow” she said aloud as she looked around the room, then turned out the lights and went up to bed…alone.
Vin lay across the bed in the dark, thoughts of what should have happened tonight racing through his mind, fighting with what actually did happen. “I can’t believe she sat on the phone with him like that” he thought, “with me sitting right there waiting for her.” “Things have definitely changed with her, she never would have done that before…or maybe she would have, and I just wasn’t here to know about it.”
“No” he thought, “I’m not gonna let this guy get all up in my head…make me doubt her.” “Tonight, tonight was just an isolated incident. Old friend…old boyfriend comes home unexpectedly…haven’t seen each other in a long time…that’s all it is. I’m not gonna let him make it into something that it isn’t.”
He listened quietly to Raven’s footsteps as she climbed the stairs. Looking at the light coming in under the door he could see that she paused momentarily outside his room.
He tried to will her into the room. “Knock…come on baby…Knock,” he whispered to the darkness. But she didn’t. She paused briefly and then passed on to her room. He heard her bedroom door close and thought briefly that maybe he should go to her. “No, she’ll just think I’m pressuring her and that will really kill it. Better to just leave things alone for now and talk in the morning.” He pulled off the sweater and tossed it on the chair across the room, the jeans quickly followed it, then pulling the comforter back he slipped under the covers and closed his eyes trying to shut out the disappointment of the evening.
Raven draped her dress on the chaise opposite her bed. As she peeled off her bra she searched the dresser drawer for something to sleep in. What she found was one of Vin’s old shirts, soft and worn from repeated washings, this one had been in the drawer since his last visit…it still smelled like him. She put it on and climbed into bed, listening ever so intently to see if she could hear any sounds coming from his room. There were none.
“Maybe he’ll knock,” she thought to herself as she turned over in the bed to face the door. She listened quietly for a few more minutes, hearing no movement in the room next door she turned out the light on the nightstand and pulling the covers up over her head closed her eyes saying to herself “Damn!”
