About a week later, Renae woke up in the middle of the night next to Vladimir. She knew as she awoke in a pool of liquid: it was time. She tugged at him.
“Vladimir. Wake up.” He stirred for a moment but then woke up.
“Hmm?” He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and then felt the wetness. “Is it time?”
“It’s time…” He got up, got her suitcase, and then helped her out of bed.
“I’ll start the car…you wait at the front door.” He kissed her lightly, took the suitcase out to the car, and then disappeared quickly out the front door. She waited in the living room for him, and when he returned, he scooped her up in his arms.
“What are you doing,” she asked through quick breaths. The contractions had started.
“You don’t have to walk. I take care of you…”
The trip to the hospital was quite tumultuous. When they got there, before they got out of the car, Vladimir looked over at her.
“Don’t worry, Renae. I will be by your side. I promise. You will not be alone.”
She laid in her bed, ready to give birth. She was so nervous, but he held her hand. Before the doctor and the nurses entered the room, she looked up at him. Maybe it was the drugs, but she started to talk to him.
“I dunno…I thought you couldn’t change, but you have. I love you.” He smiled at her.
“I hope I have changed. I want to protect you and our baby.”
A few hours later, a baby boy had arrived. They agreed upon the name Lennon. Renae’s hero was John Lennon, and she wished to honor him by naming her son after him. Vladimir readily agreed. She held the baby in her arms as Vladimir looked on.
“He has your beautiful eyes,” he observed as he smiled down at them.
