AJ’s POV.
‘You should have had a shave while you were in the bath Mr bristles’ I say, stroking Went’s stubbly face as he rests his head in my lap, reaching down to kiss him.
‘I had more important things on my mind at that particular time though’ he replies, deliberately rubbing his cheek to mine and scratching my skin further. Stubble may look sexy but the tingles it gives your lips after so much kissing really isn’t.
‘And because of it I have stubble burn in undesirable places’ I reply, giving him another kiss.
‘Well stop kissing me then. And as for undesirable, well, I wouldn’t call this undesirable at all’ he then says, reaching back with his hand and giving me a gentle squeeze between the legs. I just shake my head and smile at him, stroking his arms as I lay back against my pillows again and link my fingers through his. And just as I’m starting to enjoy this relaxed pose I see him turn over and kiss his way up from my belly button to my mouth, his arms sliding under my body and tightening around me as mine wind around his back, making a content ‘mmmmm’ deep in my throat and his fingers pinch my nipples. Needless to say I’m not exactly thrilled when our tryst is interrupted by the sound of knocking at my front door.
‘I’ll make it worth your while if you pretend you’re not home’ he tells me, mouth now between my breasts as his hands run down my sides.
‘AJ, you home honey?’ I then hear my mother’s voice say from the front door. Even though I can’t wait to see her it’s times like this I wish she didn’t have the spare key, because mom doesn’t know I have company of the male persuasion, and mom is the kind of person who if I’m still in bed will come and jump on it until I get up.
‘Yeah Mom, but don’t come in the bedroom’ I say to her, untangling myself from Went and rushing across the room to dive into a fresh set of underwear.
‘Oh are you naked?’ she chirps back.
‘No but my boyfriend is!’ I shout back, smirking at Went when he gives me a ‘what did you have to tell her that for?’ look, half embarrassed half murderous but still smiling.
‘Oh right! I’ll wait in the lounge with the cats then!’ she laughs, doing her wonderful laugh that always reminds me of comedienne Phyllis Diller. I jump into my jeans and pull a clean thin strapped black vest top from my draw while Went gets up into his own clothes, exiting to find my mom standing examining one of my bonsai trees on the windowsill in the lounge.
‘Mommy this is Went, and Went this is Alice senior, aka the creator of the madness that is me’ I say with a giggle as I run towards her outstretched arms through the door and hug her tightly. I’m a mommy’s girl and I missed her bigtime.
‘Hello pretty baby! I missed you!’ she coos at me, kissing my cheek and stroking my hair. ‘You changed it again? I liked it blue and purple!’ she then says, pausing for breath for only a few minutes to untangle herself from my embrace to go and give Went a hug and kiss hello. ‘Oh my god you’re so gorgeous! Oh that's totally the wrong thing to say, excuse me please!’ she finishes, making him laugh and blush just a little.
‘It’s nice to meet you Alice’ he says with a smile, obviously amused as he is bemused about her reaction. He’s so modest.
‘Im’a go make some drinks, mother come assist’ I say, giving Went’s hand a squeeze as I walk past him and wear him thud down onto the couch as we leave the room. I know my mom and I know her well, the questions are about to come at around a hundred miles an hour. And as soon as I shut the kitchen door she’s off.
‘Okay so he’s your boyfriend now? Since when did that happen then missy? The last time we had a decent conversation it was still just dating! Do reveal all!’ she says to me, hoisting herself up on the counter while I click the kettle on.
‘Three weeks ago yesterday to be precise, and in another week I’ll have been dating him for three months! I can’t believe it! Or that we wrapped up filming so fast actually’ I say as she nods.
‘I know yeah, but you’re going to be away for much longer filming the second season right?’ she asks, taking a cookie from the jar.
‘Oh god yes, it’s an eight month schedule so I’ll be down in Texas for a while, missing you all again’ I say, poking out my bottom lip and giving her another hug.
‘Awwww well you have that handsome man out there to keep you company now don’t you?’ she says, steering the conversation back around to Went and managing to fit in another five questions before we’re done. Mothers!
Wentworth’s POV.
Sitting and listening to Alice as she talks it’s plain to see how much like her AJ really is. Both confident but grounded, intelligent but humble with it, and both have the ability to convey joy with high volume laughter. And even though we’ve only been together a short while it’s really good to spend time with someone as obviously important to her as her mother. She’s only ever had good things to say about her, like how she put her studies on hold to have Alex at just eighteen years old, AJ coming along two years later which set her back another four until she resumed her studies to become a Pharmacologist. And after reaching the profession at the age of thirty she didn’t stop until Jack was born seven years later when she took another four years out to solely devote her time to his upbringing like she had with her daughters.
And in listening to Alice talk I learn so much more about AJ too, things I’m sure would have come up in conversation eventually since we’re still getting to know each other better as each day passes. I hear for example that AJ once provided the drums on the first album by a local band called Stinkfish and also toured around California with them when she was nineteen and on break from college. I knew she could play the drums, but that part she left out. Another achievement she left out is that she used to volunteer at the homeless shelter in downtown LA from sixteen years old right up until about six years ago when her job meant she had to travel much more frequently.
As well as appraisals I hear humorous things about her too, like how when she, her sister, mother and aunties went for a girls weekend in the country and stayed in a cabin in the hills a squirrel had scampered in through an open window and sent AJ running for the front door screaming blue murder, rodent ‘fan’ that she is. And how she is sometimes so loud when she’s either angry or excited about something she needs a gag; I agree with that one. And an accompanying story about her getting out of her car at an intersection to scream at a guy who had cut her up and then earned himself a kick in the balls for calling her a ‘stupid ho’ as AJ remembered. But mostly what comes across the most from spending the afternoon with Alice is how proud she is of not just AJ, but all her kids.
‘So where is the little bleached blonde nightmare then?’ AJ asks her mom in reference to the youngest of the Jameson children.
‘He went up to Pasadena at six am this morning to skate with his buddies, I don’t expect to see him back until sometime tonight unless he stays out at Todd’s’ replies Alice as AJ nods.
‘Went you’ll either love or hate my little brother I swear, he’s a riot’ she then says to me, reaching for her cigarettes off the table.
‘What’s he like then?’ I enquire.
‘Imagine a male AJ in skate clothes, in fast forward, and drunk!’ says Alice, laughing that raucous laugh she has while AJ nods through her giggles.
‘The boy doesn’t need alcohol with the way he is naturally let’s just put it this way! And thank god he isn’t interested in it at all either, we have dad’s problem to thank for that, as bad as it sounds but hell it’s the truth! And sorry ma, I shan’t mention him again’ says AJ obviously in reference to her father and not Jack as I see Alice make a slight face halfway between a grimace and wince. With that the conversation moves on and before I know it seven o’ clock has rolled around and I have approximately one hour to get back to Burbank, change and meet a few friends of mine for a drink at 7.30. And since I’ve met a person who’s so important to her today I feel like introducing her to two who are important to me. Just like her two best friends Josh and Ike are a couple, so are mine (mine in California at least, I haven’t forgotten my buddies back on the east coast).
‘I’m meeting Andy and Sally in about an hour, would you like to come with? Grab some clothes and stay at mine after if you want?’ I ask her just after Alice leaves.
‘That’d be great, give me ten minutes and I’ll be ready’ she says, reaching up to wrap her arms around my neck and plant a quick kiss on my lips before bouncing off bedroom bound to fetch her things. She’s too cute, just the way she’s so happy and upbeat all of the time. It’s impossible to ever feel down with her in your presence.
AJ’s POV.
After driving back to Went’s apartment, which is just to the side of a huge park and has a view of a canopy of thick trees through the lounge and bedroom window, I drop off my things and wait for him to get changed. He emerges from the bedroom within minutes, wearing a short sleeved white shirt and blue jeans, smelling strongly of Tommy Hilfiger and looking so gorgeous I must confess; I kinda wish I had time to march him back into the bedroom again. It turns out the bar we are meeting his friends at is just across the park so set out on foot, talking about sports along the way after passing the basketball court in the centre and me expressing my desire to go shoot hoops.
When we arrive his friends are already there, and after greeting them and introducing me he heads to the bar to fetch us some drinks while I sit and make small talk with Andy and Sally. Once he arrives back it doesn’t take long at all for the conversation to break off into two halves, Andy and Went talking as Sally instigates conversation by complimenting the bracelet Went brought me for my birthday. An hour later and we’re putting the world (or rather the airheads of Los Angeles) to rights.
‘Fashionistas, the scourge of LA and any kind of reasonable intelligence on how to look, I mean really, when has a fucking size zero ever been aesthetically beautiful to the eye until fashion dictated it to be that way?’ says Sally as she casts her eyes over to a table of waif like blondes all wearing outfits that look like they have been cut for nine year old children.
‘I know! I made the mistake of deciding I wanted a pair of these really gorgeous ripped up Dolce & Gabbana jeans once and the sales assistant practically sneered at me for requesting a pair in a size eight’ I say, watching her nod like it’s something she’s experienced time and time again.
‘Being a size ten makes me a virtual leper to them sister, now lets drink to having curves and being proud of them’ says Sally as she lifts her glass to mine. She then shouts out to the guys playing at the pool table to let her know when they’re done, explaining to me that she likes to beat Andy ‘whenever I can’ while I sink another mouthful of a bizarre cherry cocktail I liked the look of and decided to swap to after two bottles of bud. So far I’ve had three and now I’m feeling a pleasant wave of alcohol running through me I’m switching to soda water. I don’t do being drunk often.
And on the night and conversation goes, but a little later on winds back to those three pencil thin girls but this time in a way I can’t deny I feel much triumph over. Excusing myself I get out of my seat and head in the direction of the bathroom, seeing ‘Ladies upstairs’ painted on the wall of the brightly coloured Mexican themed bar. Up I head, looking at the paintings on my way before I swing the door open at the top of the stairs and walk into the blue tiled bathroom, which makes me omit an immediate impressed little ‘ooooh!’ at the decoration.
After I close the cubicle door behind me I hear the voices of the three girls who have been talking so loudly about their jobs in fashion enter the bathroom, and can’t help but be amused about their topic of conversation.
‘So do you like, think he’s with that freaky girl with all the tattoos? I can’t work it out, I mean if they’re just friends then I’m straight over there, I think I’ll ask him next time he goes to the bar because oh my god, he is so hot!’ One announces.
‘Girl I totally know! And nah he can’t be with that girl, he’s too gorgeous for her, she’s not even like, in any way similar to him at all so I suspect they are just friends. And if you don’t go over there and talk to him then I will!’ I hear another one say before a lot of ‘riiiiight!’ goes to and fro between the cubicles. I finish and flush, walking out to wash my hands and seeing the three girls appear and all look taken aback a little before looking at me like I’m beneath them and then doing that thing I fucking hate the most that girls do.
Whisper amongst themselves, stupidly convinced I can’t hear them. And so I pull my small compact from my pocket and re touch my lipgloss and blush before walking out behind them, overtaking them on the stairs back down into the bar and walking back over to where Went is sat by himself, Sally and Andy close by after finally managing to secure a pool table.
I can hear the girls walking behind me come to a halt at their table and can just feel their eyes burning into the back of my head as I approach my boyfriend, making him laugh instantly as soon as I open my mouth when I reach his side.
‘I’ve been thinking Miller, and I think we should have ‘bath time’ as soon as we get back to your place tonight’ I say, giving him a double eyebrow raise and a cheeky grin as I coin a new phrase for sex, based on this mornings escapades at least. He was right when he said things wouldn’t be limited to the bedroom.
‘And looking the way you do right now I’m powerless to disagree with that notion’ he says, winking at me while his hand creeps up the inside of my leg and rests to stroke on my inner thigh for a few moments.
‘You know I have the smuggest sense of satisfaction in the world right now. There’s a table over there with three girls who were all giving me evil looks in the ladies, after talking about how hot they think you are and which one was going to come and ask you out. And it’s made them sick to their stomachs to see you doing that to my leg’ I tell him, looking over my shoulder and smiling at the stony faced girls, feeling Went’s hand slide off my leg as I sit down. He looks amused about what I just told him for a few moments before speaking.
‘You should have told them bleached blonde skeletons don’t float my boat’ he says, leaning in close to me as I feel his lips gently brush against my ear. I’m glad I came tonight, not just because it’s been great to meet Sally and Andy who are both such nice people, but also just to be with him, enjoying proper time together away from work. And for the rest of the night I subtlety remind him of just how much I want to enjoy time with him alone too, resting my hand on the back of his neck and trailing my middle fingernail in a circle, knowing that touching that exact area never fails to discreetly turn him on.
‘Now you’ve done it, now I’m definitely going to have to take you home’ says Went as I smile and rest my head on his shoulder, feeling him kiss my forehead. Content and sexually excited about what’s to come if you’ll pardon the pun. What more does a girl need?
‘Life’s great with you in it, I just thought you should know that’ he says, wrapping his arm around me and stroking my hair before kissing my head again. Yeah, that’ll do it.
