Never Get Drunk In Vegas
The morning of their court case had finally arrived, the day which they would finally know whether the judge was going to grant a divorce or whether they would be forced to remain married on some condition or other. They were dreading it, fearing that since Nikki was now pregnant that the judge would be less inclined to give them a divorce.
Both Shia and Nikki were glad their parents were refusing to attend as neither agreed about the divorce. Because they refused to come and oversee the proceedings it meant they could put off informing their parents of the fact they were to be grandparents in thirty four weeks time. The fact they could put it off until at least after the court hearing was the only blessing the two could agree on at the point in time.
Shia pinched the bridge of his nose as he and Nikki waited outside the room their case was to be decided. Zac and Megan had come along to support them but mainly to prevent them from trying to wipe the other out, in other words they were playing buffers between the pair. Their spats had increased to almost a daily basis and had become even more heated especially after they knew for certain that Nikki was pregnant and the court case had loomed closer each day.
Zac inwardly grimaced at the thought of leaving them on their own as the last thing Zac wanted happening was for Shia and Nikki to pay any attention to the other. Whatever attention they would show the other would surely be the kind to get them arrested, Zac figured in exasperation. In a way Zac wished Nikki had not taken those pregnancy tests as the atmosphere had truly gone one hundred percent to hell in a hand basket from that point on.
Zac and Megan made a noticeable point of sitting next to each other smack right in the middle between the pair, causing Shia and Nikki to merely rolled their eyes inwardly snorting in disbelief. Honestly did the pair really think they could come between Nikki and Shia once things truly got fired up. It was not like he would ever physically harm her especially after they discovered she was pregnant with his baby.
Nikki scoffed quietly as she asked, “Christ you two what do you think I am going to do, snuff the life out of him?” Zac and Megan exchanged a knowing glance before saying in perfect unison, “Hell yes!” Shia sniggered at this, thinking sourly, ‘Yeah right, she can fucking well try does not mean she is going to succeed.’ Oh no, Shia LaBeouf was well and truly done playing ball nicely with the other children, it sure as hell was going to be on his terms if he could fucking well help it.
Nikki’s eyes flashed dangerously as if she somehow knew what exactly her husband was thinking and hissed, “Watch yourself LaBeouf I assure you it will not take much for me to do exactly what they think I will. The thought, it is highly tempting, just you think about that. I sure as hell will not be losing any sleep over you. My only and honest regret would be that your son or daughter would be deprived of their father.”
Their lawyers exchanged a nervous glance when they saw the truly poisonous glance that Shia shot his wife at that very moment. Nikki’s lawyer quickly interrupted before Shia could retaliate, “Please, settle down as you two getting in each other’s faces will not solve this situation any faster if anything it only tends to prolong it, which is something I am certain you both could do without at this point in time.”
Shia’s lawyer added, “Listen Mr LaBeouf I might as well warn you now, I shall try my hardest to see to it that your granted a divorce from your wife, but I highly recommend you not antagonise her seeing as if the judge manages to overrule myself and her lawyer then you’ll end up stuck married to her until the judge sees fit. The more volatile you act the harder the judge will come down on you both.”
Nikki’s lawyer continued to explain, “You’ll both be stuck in a marriage that consists of daily arguments, which is a highly unsuitable environment to bring a newborn baby or any child into for that matter. The judge will make a point of mentioning this to you both. Besides I heard the judge is a family man and believes a strong and undivided family unit is productive to a healthy growing child, something I have to say I whole heartedly agree with being a family man myself.”
Zac said, “Christ, you two are just as bad as the other and are both equally capable of making each other’s lives a living hell. How about standing down for a second and truly thinking about the shit hole you two have dug yourselves into? Get a god damn grip it isn’t just you two anymore there is an innocent little boy or girl who need their parents to set the perfect example in which they are to learn and grow up by.”
Megan added, “Like for starters, what kind of example will you be setting for your son or daughter, what sort of influence do you think you two being at each other’s throats and bitching constantly will have upon your baby? How is a child supposed to the know right from wrong and the difference between what is considered normal and healthy and what is not, particularly when their parents the two they are supposed to look up to and learn from show a poor example?”
Shia asked, “What are the chances of him not granting us a divorce immediately?” His lawyer replied, “Higher than either you or your wife will like in fact. You end up with a judge who like Mrs. LaBeouf’s lawyer mentioned is a family man, the worst kind of man to ask for a divorce when your wife is barely six weeks pregnant and you are without a doubt the other parent, which will be a major deciding factor in this case.”
Nikki turned to Shia and asked, “Oh god, what if he doesn’t grant us a divorce immediately, what will we end up doing?” Shia replied, “I can’t believe I am even suggesting this, but we could buy a house. I guess start setting up a nursery as neither of our apartments will be suitable.” He grimaced as he concluded, “In other words, we grin and bear it, we love and care for this child. Whatever issues you and I have we do not allow them to affect the wellbeing and upbringing of our son or daughter if we can help it.”
Megan suddenly said, “What are you going to do Shia as we are in the last couple of days of March, we start touring and promoting Transformer 2 in another week. You know we’ll be travelling all over the place until mid August? Nikki will need you more and more as her pregnancy progresses and you both need to prepare for the fact that you are going to be parents together as there is no avoiding it whether you get granted a divorce or not.”
Zac added, “It shouldn’t be a problem as she will not be due until around about late November. If you do not get the divorce immediately then you could purchase the house before you leave to go on the promotional tour. I, along with Amanda, Elijah, Britney, and Curtis, could help her decorate it whilst you’re away. I’m sure even mine and Nik’s families will be willing to pitch in as well.” He concluded, “Besides, we are kind of getting ahead of ourselves here, he might grant you the divorce, very unlikely I reckon, but you never know.”
The others nodded as the lawyers exchanged another glance, both had a very strong feeling that neither of their clients was liable to get what they wanted that day, no matter how they both defended their clients and stated their cases to the judge hopping he would decide in one of their favours. Like they had already informed their clients having a judge who was a family man in this would make it even more difficult to convince this judge that a divorce was the best course of action to take.
They were all silent for five minutes or so before a man opened the large double polished oak doors and said, “The judge is ready for you Mr and Mrs LaBeouf.” Shia and Nikki stood followed by Zac and Megan as the two lawyers went on ahead of everyone else. Once everyone was inside they were all seated, Nikki on the left hand side of the room in front with her lawyer with Zac sitting behind her. Shia was on the right with his own lawyer and Megan sat behind him.
Zac and Megan hated having to play different sides of the whole mess but the fact of the matter was that Zac’s loyalties are and would always be to Nikki, just as Megan’s own were to Shia. There was far too much history for it to be otherwise as the kind of loyalty that Zac had for Nikki and Megan had for Shia could not just be simply discard at the drop of a hat or a moment’s notice.
Once everyone was settled the judge began and asked Nikki, “I believe the lawyers of Mr Shia LaBeouf and Mrs. Nicole LaBeouf waited to bring this case forth and to the attention of the court until it could be determined whether a child had been conceived in recent weeks since the start of their marriage. Could you please confirmed for me and the court Mrs LaBeouf whether you are in fact pregnant or not?”
Nikki replied, “Yes your honour, I am, I confirmed it on Friday just passed all eight tests consisting of four different brands were positive. I shall be making an appointment at my Doctors to confirm my pregnancy but at this point I just believe it to be a formality.” The judge asked, “How accurate do you suspect the result was as it is you who would know how your body works better than any other?” Nikki replied, “I am certain it was more than fairly accurate due to the women on my mother’s side of the family being very fertile your honour and apparently I am no different from them in that regard either.”
The judge nodded and said, “Very well, Mrs LaBeouf.” He then turned to Shia and asked, “And you Mr LaBeouf how does this change your views on your marriage to Nicole LaBeouf?” Shia took a sip of the water in front of him before answering, “It only changes it to the point that I still want a divorce, however, if she had not been pregnant then I would have cut all ties with her.” He added after a brief pause and said, “Nevertheless, the fact is that she is pregnant. I have decided I will support to her and my child, whether I remain married to their mother or not, I would prefer to do it not married.”The judge gestured to Shia’s lawyer to stand and plead their case. He stood and began, “Your honour as you have just heard my client is willing to support and be a part of his child’s life, although both he and I feel it would be best if he and the child’s mother were not to remain married.” The judge asked, “Be more specific, why do you feel it not in the best interest that they should remain married?”
The lawyer replied, “Their relationship as far as I could gather is less than civil. We feel it not a suitable environment for a new born baby to be brought up in and subjected to.” He added, “My client wishes for equal custardy to the child, but he or she would live with and be cared for on a regular basis by their mother.” He concluded, “He has expressed his willingness to arrange regular visiting arrangements with the mother.”
The judge sighed and nodded before turning to face the left hand side of the room, where he then gestured for Nikki’s lawyer to stand up and plead their case. He stood and faced the judge after sipping from his glass of water. He began, “My client also wishes for a divorce and has expressed her want to keep her and Mr LaBeouf’s child. She is willing to give Mr LaBeouf access to his son or daughter and will not try to prevent him from seeing his child.”
He added, “Although she does feel that that state of her personal relationship with the father is less then stable to bring up a child, to say they are less then civil would be putting it lightly your honour.” The judge raised a brow and asked, “In what way are they uncivil to the other, is it physical or verbal abuse?” The lawyer replied, “Verbal your honour. I and Mr LaBeouf’s lawyer witnessed an episode outside this room before the start of these proceedings.”
The judge asked, “What do you think is the cause of their arguments, besides the fact they are married to the other?” The lawyer replied, “They are both young and unprepared to start a family, marriage and children had not been on the agenda for twenty one and twenty-three year-olds your honour.” He concluded, “Of course there is the factor of their personalities clashing. It would seem these two have an uncanny ability to push the others buttons with an amazing ease. My client finds Mr LaBeouf’s prior form of dating habits distasteful, which I am afraid is a repeatedly ongoing argument.”
The judge was clearly not in the least amused by what he had heard from both sides, not in the least at all. He gestured for Nikki’s lawyer to retake his seat before letting out a loud sigh and laced his fingers together in front of him. He turned his gaze on Nikki then Shia, followed finally by everyone else in the room. He began to reveal his decision to everyone, a decision easily come by seconds after hearing Nikki’s lawyer stated his client’s case.
He said in an exasperated tone, “I have come to my final decision, that being, I will not grant either one of you a divorce from the other. To be frank I am beyond weary with all the young and irresponsible couples I have encountered flowing in and out of my courtroom, some even asking for a divorce as early as only twenty-four hours after marrying.” He continued at the looks of pained disbelief on the young pairs face. “You were irresponsible to drink too much and drag yourselves off to a Las Vegas chapel of all places, a place which has made up a majority of the divorces I have given, especially to couples as young as yourselves.”
He went on, his words shaming Nikki, but pissing Shia off even more by the second. His words reminding both of what Zac had raged about back in that hotel room in Vegas. “Marriage is not something that should be stepped into lightly. You do not make a mockery out of such a union, a union most people are respectively sober for and most are marrying those they are in love with, who are ready for such an intimate binding.” He added, “Starting families of their own is usually the next step after marriage. Those people are usually mature and responsible adults, who understand and respect the importance of such a partnership between two people.”
He revealed what he was forcing on them, “I am going to settle this here and now. You are without a shadow of a doubt going to remain as husband and wife, whilst remaining faithful; meaning you Mr LaBeouf will cease your less then respectable dating habits.” He continued, “I am sentencing you both to eighteen months of marriage, due to the fact you have a baby on the way, meaning you shall live together, grow together, and mature together as parents and as husband and wife. You will provide love and security for this baby that was created during disgusting, immature and drunken chaos.”
He went on, making Nikki and Shia wish he would shove several corks in the opening and closing hole in his face. Each word coming out of his mouth, each sentence was more horrifying then the previous. “You are going to endure sleepless nights, early morning feedings and nappy changing, teething and other such irritations I am sure your baby will endure, like all babies.” He smiled slightly as he told them, “You may even find the joy in discovering all the new and wondrous things your baby will do and get into as he or she grows.”
He turned his gaze to Shia and smiled as he said, “Mr LaBeouf you I guarantee will not be any different to any other self respecting man, who has a heart and knows how to use it and feel with it.” He added at Shia’s uncertain look, “When it comes to hearing his son or daughter cry and take in their first breath, you will experience the wonders and joys of discovering you have created such a small and precious life. I know the feeling very well indeed I am a father of two of my own.”
What he said next he aimed at both of them, “You will come back and see me after enduring nine months of pregnancy, with a further nine months of living together, being married and parents.” What he added on to that made Shia and Nikki inwardly blanch, “You are going to learn how to get along and respect each other, even if you never learn to love each other, you will at least learn respect for the other.”
He barely stifled a smirk as he revealed, “Meaning I am going to arrange for the both of you to see a marriage councillor. The first appointment I shall arrange for this Friday, another at your sixth month of pregnancy, again after your baby is six months old. Finally, a week before I have you both come back here to assess what progress you have both managed to make.”
He continued, “If you do not attend or miss even one of the appointments without a valid reason, I assure you I will be hauling you straight back here, where I will extend your marriage a further nine months, meaning sessions with the councillor once a month.” He concluded, “Think about it, with your careers I am certain such a situation will make working something awful to endure.” He then said before banging the wooden gavel on the surface of the sounding block in front of him, “We return in eighteen months from today.”
Shia and Nikki sat silently and rigidly in their seats, completely numb with disbelief and horror. Zac and Megan exchanged a look of disbelief at the turn of events. It had been expected, but oh god, this was bad, bad in the sense that their friends had just received the very raw end of the deal. They could imagine how unbelievably incensed the pair must currently be feeling.
