When Night Falls(Pt16)
Joe stared out the same window, the same landscape that has been the lush landscape of his home for nearly 80 years. In the distance, hundreds of homes had sprang up, covering the once empty fields. He never noticed the lack of trees until now, cut down to make way for more buildings. But the view of the Bay remained the same. It could be as black as the sky above on foggy nights or sparkling in the moonlight on clear nights. It had been clear when they arrived back at the house after the events of tonight. Joe had watched the fog roll in over the water and surrounding landscape, dampening his mood even more. Scrubbing the weariness from his face…
“What are you doing?”
Joe nearly jumped to the ceiling. “Where have you been?” he countered with a question of his own.
“Following a few leads and talking with the authorities.” He tossed his jacket on the chair and flopped down. “They turned up nothing. The man responsible for the shooting, killed himself before anyone caught him.”
“How convenient.” Joe huffed and glared at him.
“What’s on your mind Joe?” Nick said on an exhale of breath.
“You tell me?”
Nick rolled his eyes. “I’m too tired to pick up on anything you are thinking right now.”
”No doubt.”
He wasn’t about to get into an argument with him, therefor changed the subject. “How are Sav and Kyle?”
“Is this another one of your schemes Nick?”
Nick glared hard it him. “Now that…” he quickly rose from his seat, snatched his jacket up. “…question, doesn’t even deserve an answer.”
“Are you?”
“NO!” Nick wheeled back around. “I may have done unimaginable things in my long life, but I would never…never harm Thomas. Believe this or not Joseph. I have great respect for him, nurtured him when you were off on one of your tangents. Made him see his mistake, by cutting you out of his life when he found out about you and Rick. You have what I always wanted…a son. I found that with Thomas. And don’t you dare throw that bullshit in my face about ‘he is my son’….I know that! Don’t stand there and preach to me about what you have lost!”
Joe was taken aback by his out burst, “Wow…I’ve never seen you lose it.”
”I don’t...lose it.” Nick calmly told him, dropping back in his chair.
“And that was...?”
”Venting.”
“Ooh OK.” Joe smirked and sat in front of him. “You are always the calm and collective one in bad situations. No one is going to laugh behind your back if you give into your grief.”
“I don’t have time for that.” Nick leaned forward. “Besides, I do it in private.”
“I haven’t felt you do any of it since this all started.”
“I’m not about to cry on your shoulder.”
Joe studied the man before him, after all the time he had been in their lives, what he knew about him, yet he remained a mystery, “It’s only been the last 10 years or so that I’ve really began to understand you. You’re a complicated person Nick, with so many layers.”
“I don’t want to get into a mushy conversation with you.”
“I’m not being mushy, just stating what’s on my mind.”
“If you would have taken the time long before this, you would know the person that I am and not the person you see me as.”
“Well…you don’t exactly share any of that with me either.”
“You only had to ask.”
“How?” Joe sarcastic stated. “Try to squeeze it in between your constent threats toward me, your mindless word games...oh I know...” Joe snapped his fingers and hit Nick with a hard glare, “...when you were torturing Rick every chance you got.”
“Stop…” Nick pinched the bridge of his nose. “…I’m not going to get into this type of conversation now. Save it for another time. We need to concentrate on the days ahead, make plans how to find Crystal and Lily.”
“The mighty Nicholas de Brabant once again takes control.”
Nick leaned back in his chair, folding his hands together he calmly stared at Joe, “Tonight was really rough on all of us and most likely more rough nights ahead.”
Joe took Nick’s lead and tried to calm himself, taking a deep breath he turned the conversation back to what needed to be discussed. “Where do we go from here? He’s still out there. He managed to get through the guards we had posted around the cemetery.”
“Yes he did…I don’t know how, but he did.”
“None of us are really safe anywhere.”
“I contacted The Elders before I came home.”
Joe darted his eyes to Nick’s tired ones, “I thought you couldn’t do that, no body could.”
“I have my sources. Anyway, it will be a few days before we hear anything from them. I want everyone ready to leave at a moments notice.”
“We tried that before, he knew.”
“He will loose them in the shuffle.”
”What do you mean?”
Nick stood up and moved to the fireplace. “I’ve asked them to take our family under their protection.”
”Our family.” Joe raised his brow.
“Yes, our family…including you. I will stay behind and deal with him.”
“Um…there is one little bitty problem.” Joe slowly rose from his seat and approached him. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“Now is not the time to be all macho and brave Joseph.”
“I have just as much at stake as you do Nick, if not more…I’m not leaving and you can’t make me.”
”Can’t I?” Nick quickly shot back.
“Don’t pull that ‘I’m the boss and you’ll do as I say’ crap on me, cause it won’t work. I’m staying, end of discussion.”
“I’m concerned for your safety.”
”Well don’t be, besides, you’ll need to use that ‘I’m the boss’ on Rick, because you know he will not leave willingly if we are staying here.”
“Yes, that stubborn streak of his.” Nick frowned. “If I have to resort to other means to get him to safety, then so be it.”
“You mean, of the drug kind?”
“Exactly.”
“I don’t know about that Nick. He still has the wound in his leg. He was shot three times tonight, one of which is sever, it would kill a normal human. He’s looking more tired than ever. I’m afraid he’s going to relapse because of that.”
“Then we’ll bound and gag him, force him in the car, but he will go.” Nick walked over to the window, then quickly turned back to Joe. “Do you really think that h..he will have a relapse?”
“I don’t know…it’s possible he could. I’m worried that he will, that’s all.”
“We can use that reason to get him to leave.”
“It might work.”
“Then convince him.”
“OK, I’ll try, but I don’t think any amount of convincing will get him to leave.”
Silent spread out between them, both in their own thoughts, until Nick broke that silence. ”Do you think anyone else will put up argument?”
“Phil might, but in the end he’ll see that it’s for the best. I think everyone will actually.”
“Good, because I want them ready to leave at a moments notice.”
“So what do we do now?”
”Wait.” Nick picked up the bottle that Joe had been drinking from and took a long drink.
“What about Evelyn? Do you know that I brought her across?”
”Yes. She will get the training she needs once they are safely hidden.”
Joe nodded in response and sat down again. “Do you think he’ll kill Lily and Crystal?”
“I don’t know. All we can do is hope that he doesn’t. He may use them like a ransom to get….something.”
“Have you got any idea who it could be?”
“No.” Nick returned to his place by the mantle. “Stop asking all these questions.”
“I’m trying to pick your brain.” Joe smiled slightly.
“You’re already doing that, by bouncing around inside.” Nick huffed. “Go busy yourself else where, so I can think.”
“Well let’s see…um…most everyone is asleep. The sun is coming up, so I can’t go outside and I’m not sleepy. So I guess that leaves me to bother you.”
“Wonderful.” Nick grumbled and went back to the window.
Silence stretched between them again. Both men thinking of different things.
“Did you really do that?”
“Do what?”
“Make Thomas come home.”
”He made that decision on his own…with a little pushing from me.”
“How did you do it? When he left that night, I thought I had alienated him forever. It’s not everyday that your son finds out you sleep with another man. Not to mention that Thomas grew up calling him Uncle Sav.”
Nick started laughing, remembering those years with Thomas. “He is so much like you Joe, in every way. Not only does he have your looks, but your attitude, and I quote, ‘I can achieve anything I set my mind too. I have a great father that never gave up his dream to put the bands music out there for the world to hear. To became a rock star. I’m very proud of him. He is my roll model for what drive and determination mean.’
“He said that?”
“Word for word. Then I asked him, ‘If you felt that way, why shut your father out of your life?’ He didn’t know what to say and…” Nick looked thoughtful, rubbing his chin. “…I don’t think he ever answered that.”
“So how did you do it?” Joe repeated his previous question.
“Drive and determination of course.” Nick held out his arms, a silly smirk on his face.
Joe chuckled and looked down at his hands in his lap.
“I think he got his stubborn streak from Sav though, from watching him as he grew up. You rarely displayed yours.”
“It depends on the situ…” Joe glanced to where Nick had been standing and didn’t see him. “…uh Nick. Where did you go?”
“I’m lying on the floor.”
Joe got up and went over to where he was, staring down at him.
“Have you ever noticed your ceiling?”
“Hum…” Joe looked up. “…not really.”
“It has all these intricate designs.”
“Looks like blobs of plaster to me.”
“You have to look harder.” Nick patted the floor beside him. “It will help ease your mind thinking of how to put those blobs together and form whatever it looks like.”
“This is silly.” Joe huffed and lay beside him.
“Noo, what is silly, is the time Thomas banned me from my building.”
“He did what?” Joe chuckled.
Nick turned his head to look at him. “It’s good to hear you laugh.”
”I haven’t had much to laugh about lately.” Joe replied.
“I think you will get a good laugh from this.”
“He never told me about it. You never told me about it, but I knew you had visited with him a lot over those three years.”
“I combined business with pleasure. Anyway…he banned me from the building because I was pestering and pushing him to much about reconciling with you.”
”And you let him get away with it.”
“For a brief period…um two days. It was amusing. The whole affair was a challenge. In the end it paid off. Thomas acknowledged his mistake and came home.”
”I can’t believe he locked you out of the building. Would love to have seen your face.” Joe laughed at the vision. “I never knew what or who changed his mind. Never saw it in his blood either.” His laugh faded away and he grew quiet. “Thank you.”
“No need to thank me.”
“But I want to. If it hadn’t been for what you did with Thomas, our separation may have been longer. Again…Thank you.”
They lay in silence for the longest time, staring up at the plaster blob ceiling, looking for any patterns that may emerge. Both men recalling happier times from their own memories of Thomas.
“I didn’t ask you how Kyle was.” Nick broke the silence.
“Good, surgery to remove the bullet went fine. He’s resting comfortably upstairs now. I don’t think the doctors liked the idea of him leaving so soon after surgery. Phil told them he would have the best care possible at home.”
”That’s good. I’ll check on him later.” Nick said softly, then looked over at Joe. “It occurred to me while I was talking with members of the Community that intervened, then with the authorities. Kyle was the target, he was supposed to die tonight.”
Joe whipped his head up. “Kyle, are you sure?”
“He was shot at first. I know the sound of gunfire; saw the bullet hit Kyle. Rick’s timing was prefect, if he hadn’t of been where he was at the time of the first shot, Kyle would be dead. The shooters aim was impeccable, probably trained as a sniper at some point in his life. He was also lucky the distance was relatively far away, given the type of rifle that was used, the bullet didn’t go through Rick.”
”Rick is not going to like hearing this.”
“Then don’t tell him.”
”He’s going to find out, maybe we should tell him.”
”How do…that one is shaped like the Eiffel Tower….how do you think he will handle it?”
“Looks like the Leaning Tower of Pisa to me.” Joe chuckled. “He will handle it pretty good, I think. Kyle is going to be OK, then again, he may throw a fit, get himself all worked up, and it wouldn’t be good for him.”
After thinking about it for a few seconds, Nick looked at Joe, catching his eye. “We’ll wait until this is all over.” Both of them said at the same time.
