December 25, 2005 Ann Arbor MI
Michael stumbled into the bathroom at six in the morning and after using the toilet and brushing his teeth, he stared into the mirror and then turned to the stained glass window but couldn’t really see much.
It seemed awfully bright outside for a winter morning and he walked into the bedroom to look out of the window in there. He peeked through the curtains to find snow on the ground mor more falling and barely restrained himself from giving an excited whoop.
There was snow on Christmas. He considered jumping on the bed and waking Ian up but they’d gone to bed late last night and fallen asleep much later. Michael wiggled his bottom, still feeling a little stretched from the rather through fucking he’d received.
No, Ian needed his sleep after that performance. Michael pulled on warm sweats and thick socks before wandering downstairs. He stopped and turned on the tree lights, making sure he’d remembered to put all the presents he’d bought out before heading into the kitchen and flipping on the lights.
“Whoa. Hey mom, you’re up early.” He bent down and kissed her cheek as she sat at the table nursing a cup of tea. He poured himself a glass of milk and sat down next to her and putting a hand on one of hers.
“What’s wrong, mom?”
“Oh, Michael. You’re such a good son, you know that right?” Debbie raised her head to look at him and he noticed she’d been crying.
Michael felt his chest tighten and gulped. “Are you okay, mom? You’re not sick are you?”
“Honey, I’m fine. Really, had a check up last month and I’m in perfect health.”
“Oh, whew. Is Grandma okay? Dad? The girls?”
“Yes, everyone is fine.”
“So why have you been crying?”
Debbie took a deep breath and wiped her eyes on theeve eve of her robe. “I was just sitting here trying to figure out how to tell you something.”
“I’m here right now and you know you can tell me anything.” Michael smiled reassuringly.
“Okay. I’ve been dating someone for a couple of months.”
“Mom, that’s great! What’s his name? What does he do? Where did you meet?”
“You’re not upset?” Debbie said with a weak smile.
“Upset? Why would I be upset?”
“Well, your sisters didn’t really take it well and you and I are so close and-”
“Wait. Mom, you’ve given up so much in your life to get me where I am and I know you turned down a lot of dates when I was growing up. I think it’s really cool as long as he treats you right so tell me all about him.”
“His name is Ryan Callahan and he’s originally from Ireland but he’s lived in the States since he was three. He’s been a widower for eight years and he’s got four kids. He’s a professor at Johns Hopkins but he got his doctorate at Berkeley; he’s in the biochemistry department.”
“Mom, you’ve netted a geek!”
“Michael! He’s not a geek, just very smart.”
“So he’s got kids? Please tell me there’s at least one boy. Please?”
“I know you were disappointed when you found out about Jackie’s girls but Ryan has two boys and two girls.”
“Yes! Finally!” Michael pumped his fist in the air. “How old are his kids?”
“Siobhan is thirty six and she’s married to Art, they have three boys; Steve is fifteen, Craig is twelve and Elliott is ten. Next is Patrick; he’s thirty two and he’s also married. Her name is Kate and they have Molly, who is ten and Trent, who’s seven. Then comes Brendan, he’s ty niy nine and he’s married to Angie and they’ve got three year old twins, Dennis and Gina. Finally there’s Colleen, she’s twenty eight and she’s been living with her partner, Elizabeth for five years. They’re thinking about adopting in China.”
“Colleen’s gay?”
“Yes, Ryan and I met at a PFLAG meeting in September, we had coffee afterwards and talked for hours then he asked me out to dinner ae’vee’ve been dating ever since.”
“I didn’t know you were going to PFLAG meetings.”
“I’ve only been to three actually. They’re a great group. Frank’s the one who suggested I go, after what happened here in August. We were all so worried and I just needed to talk to people who would understand. Your dad and Jackie have been going to meetings near their house, you know.”
“Frank? Agent Morris?” Michael was shocked to say the least.
“Yes, he called me a couple of times and your father too. Just to keep us up to date. He was very impressed with how you and Ian were handling everything but he’s a parent. I know you told us everything, Michael, but you do have a tendency to skim over stuff so we don’t worry. He wasn’t going behind your back; I hope you don’t think that.”
“No, it’s okay. I’m glad actually but enough about that. Have you meet Ryan’s kids?”
“I’ve met everyone but Brendan and his family, they live in Tucson. The other kids are in or near Baltimore.”
“When do I get to met Ryan? Can Ian and I fly out one weekend?”
“Yes but he’s more than willing to come here. He can’t wait to meet you boys, actually.”
“I guess he’s spending Christmas with his family?”
“Yes, they all go to Meagan’s house, that’s Ryan’s sister. He’s got three sisters and two brother; Meagan’s the oldest and has a big place out in Frederick and their mother, Eileen, lives with her.”
“That’s a lot of family.”
“Yes and they can be a little overwhelming, if you want to know the truth. Not that they aren’t all perfectly nice people but there are so many of them, I have a hard time keeping them straight,” she grinned and pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket. “I actually wrote all their names, occupations and ages down, see?”
Michael took the paper and laughed. “Mom, you’re such a teacher person. He sounds like a great guy. I’m really happy for you, that you’ve found someone you seem to like so much.”
Debbie teared up just a little. “Thank you son. You know your opinion is really important to me and I can’t wait for you to meet him.”
“Aw, mom. No more crying, come on. You know I can’t handle it when you cry.” Michael leaned over and put his arm around her.
“I’ll stop, just give me a minute. I’m so relieved, that you’re not upset.”
“Well, I know Hilary and Whitney will come around, they didn’t like Jackie at first either but now they do. Just give them some time.”
“Thanks, dear. Now, do you and Ian have to get to the pool soon?”
“I figured we’d go later, depending on how the roads are. Did you notice it was snowing?”
“I didn’t even notice. Snow on Christmas, how nice. You do have a snow shovel don’t you?”
“Nah, I have something even better. The lawn service does snow removal too; they’ll come around and plow the drive and clear the walk to the front door. Bob didn’t want either one of us getting hurt.”
“Bob’s a sensible guy. How’s he been?”
“ly gly good, he likes the school and the team.” Michael got up to start a pot of coffee. “Do you want some coffee? It’s about time for Ian to get up and I like to have some ready for him.”
“Sure, I could use some. It’s a little chilly in here.”
“I’ll notch the heat up and I can start a fire in theing ing room.” Michael ducked his head a little and grinned. “Or you could go put on slippers, you know.”
Debbie laughed and got up, “That would be a good idea actually. I think I’ll go upstairs and get dressed. We still have presents to open you know.” She winked and left the room, saying hello to Ian who was coming down the stairs.
“Good morning, love.” Ian came over to Michael and kissed him.
“Morning. I figured you’d be up about now, the first drips of coffee just hit the pot.”
“Actually, I’ll confess that I’ve been up for a while and I figured you and your mum needed some privacy so I went back upstairs.”
“Oh, hoch dch did you hear?”
“Just that she’s been dating and you’re okay with it.” Ian gave him a questioning look.
“I’m happy for her, really. Not that I think she needs a guy to be happy but she’s kind of dedicated the last fifteen years of her life to me and now that I’m out on my own, I was kind of worried about her. Ryan sounds like a really nice guy.”
Ian pulled a mug down from the cupboard and went over to get the milk from the fridge, “They met through PFLAG?”
“How long were you standing there?”
“Okay, I basically heard everythind bad barely made it back upstairs before Debbie caught me. I’m sorry for eavesdropping, I really didn’t mean to.” Ian looked away, feeling a little guilty.
“Well, it’s not like I wasn’t going to tell you everything anyway so no big deal.” Michael shrugged and pulled out the pastries they’d purchased the previous day.
“No big deal?”
“Of course not. Ian, you aren’t a sneaky person. Well, not over stuff like this anyway. Did you listen because you thought I wouldn’t tell you?”
“No, I didn’t even know Debbie was awake until I was outside the doorway, then I stuck around to make sure it wasn’t bad news, in case you needed me.”
“See? How can I be upset? Shouldn’t you be getting the turkey in the oven? You said it needed to go in early.”
Ian looked at clock, “Oh, you’re right! Thanks for reminding me.” Ian turned the oven on and went to one of the bottom cupboards to get the roasting pan.
“Here.” Michael put the mug filled with coffee next to Ian’s work area. “What time does the rest of the stuff have to be started?”
“An hour or two before the turkey is done, if I get it in before seven we’ll be eating around one.”
“Good. I’ll go get the fireplace going. Did you see the snow?”
“Yes, aren’t we lucky? Maybe we can go for a walk later, before dinner.”
