Chapter Seventeen
Cassandra took a deep breath and raised her hand to knock abruptly on the dressing room door. She knew she was overstepping her bounds here, but she had to do this if she was going to try and help her friend. She held her breath as she heard the heavy footsteps and then the door whipped open. Gerry stood there, partly dressed, and opened his eyes widely when he saw who it was. He wore no shirt and the black trousers of his costume hung low on his hips. The Phantom makeup covered his face and the dark wig adorned his head. “Oh hey Cassandra. Um, can I help you?” He asked her, with confusion in his voice.
Giving him a friendly smile, she nodded. “Yea, I was hoping I could talk to you before show time?”
Now Gerry looked really surprised. “Oh, sure. Um, come on in.” He moved out of the way and ushered her into the dressing room with the wave of his large hand. “Pardon the mess. Emmy keeps telling me I need to clean up better after myself.” He rattled on nervously as he shut the door, moving ahead of her to pick up the dirty clothes that sat on the folding chair. He gave her a grin as he motioned towards the chair. “Have a seat. I have about a half an hour before I need to go try and kill Carlotta.”
Cassandra tried to hold back the wry grin that threatened to appear as she sat down. “So what else does Emmy tell you?” She looked up at him, trying to keep her expression guarded.
Gerry tuned and gave her a wicked smile, not being able to help himself. “Too much actually. A lot goes in one ear and out the other. But I know you won’t be running to tell her that though?”
Biting her lip to keep from laughing, Cassandra shook her head. “Oh of course not.”
Sitting in his chair in front of the mirror, Gerry turned and grinned at her as he put his hands behind his head. “What can I help you with? I must admit I’m surprised to find you here. I thought you’d be visiting Emmy before the show.”
“Well normally I would be. I just wanted to talk to you for a second.” Cassandra started.
“What about?” Gerry’s raised his eyebrows.
Not knowing where to start at first, Cassandra took a deep breath. “Well, goodness, where do I begin?”
“Is something wrong?” Gerry saw the concerned expression on Cassandra’s face and a knot began to form in his gut. “Is Emmy ok? Nothing is wrong with her, is there?” He found it hard to say those words, fearing that they may be true. He tried to keep his composure but the thought that anything was wrong with Emmy had him putting on the best acting job of his career.
“Oh no!” Cassandra raised her hand in reassurance. Then her face crinkled. “Well, yes and no, really.”
“Ok, you’re losing me here.” Gerry forced himself to chuckle. The look on Cassandra’s face was scaring the hell out of him. She looked as if she wanted to tell him something bad but was too afraid.
Cassandra gave him a nervous smile. “Ok, I guess what I’m trying to say here is that I’ve noticed that you Emmy have become super close since she moved here to London.” She inwardly winced; knowing just how petty and judgmental that sounded.
Gerry let out the breath he had been holding. There was nothing wrong with Emmy, thank god. Relief flooded over him. But Cassandra’s question brought his defenses back up. Just how much did she think she knew? Giving a curt nod, “Yea, Emmy and I have become really good friends. She’s great.”
As much as Gerry tried to keep the love out of his voice, he just couldn’t. Cassandra gave him a shy smile. Looking at him, Cassandra could see there was something behind the green orbs. When she mentioned her friend, Gerry’s eyes lit up like a tree at Christmastime. There was definitely something there. But just how much was there, and just how far had it gone? “Well the reason I’m here is that I’ve noticed that Emmy has been, different lately.” She chose her words carefully.
“Different?” Gerry sounded confused. “How so?”
“I don’t know, different.” Cassandra shrugged. “Happier. Her smile is brighter, if that’s possible. Maybe it’s just me, but she seems like she’s in love or something.” She gave him a sideways glance, testing out his reaction.
Gerry swallowed hard as he stared at her with the blankest expression he could muster. She hit too close to home for his liking. Just how much, if anything, did Emmy tell her? Right now he knew it was best to play dumb until he talked to Emmy. “Oh? I haven’t really noticed.” He cleared his throat. “I mean, she does seem happy here. I was kind of hoping to take the credit for that. I mean she’s working with me.” He chuckled as he winked.
Cassandra chuckled. Oh trust me. I'm quite sure you can take the credit for this. “The thing is, she won’t tell me anything. But I know something is going on. She walks around with this smile plastered on her face. She seems distracted. I guess I’m just worried that when I go back home that she’ll be here all alone again. This is new for her, you know, moving across the pond and all.”
Trying this best to keep his innocent face on, Gerry sat up and gave her a reassuring smile. “Oh I wouldn’t worry too much about Emmy. I mean she’s really grown up since coming to London.” In more ways than one, he thought wickedly. “I’m finding out that she’s really a strong young woman. She has a good head on her shoulders.”
Staring at him, Cassandra had to fight hard not to burst into laughter. The expression on his face was priceless. There was definitely something going on here. First they disappear at the same time at the bar and now Gerry was avoiding her questions about Emmy. “You know, maybe I’m worrying too much.” She waved her hand in dismissal.
Nodding, Gerry gave her a small smile. “I’m sure you are. I mean Emmy seems fine around me. But I’ll make you a deal. I'll keep an eye on her, and talk to her if I see anything.”
“You would?” Cassandra tried to keep the laughter from bubbling out. “That would be great. As I said, I worry too much. But it’s great to know that Emmy is in such great hands. I mean I would rather have her make up a boyfriend than dating some strange guy.”
“Oh trust me, she won’t be going out with any strange guys.” Gerry’s voice was like steel, contradicting the smile on his face. “That I can guarantee.”
“Well that’s a relief.” She chuckled. Cassandra checked her watch and groaned. “I should get going to my seat. I don’t want to keep the Phantom from the show.” She stood up. “I’m really looking forward to seeing you and Emmy together.” She smirked as she began walking to the door.
Gerry almost tripped as he stood up. “Uh ya, I love working with Emmy.” He stuffed his hands in his pockets. This was cutting way to close for comfort. He would definitely have to talk to Emmy tonight.
Opening up the dressing room door, Cassandra turned and looked at him. “You really are a good friend to Emmy. She’s lucky to have you.”
“I’m very lucky to have her as a friend.” Gerry said rather awkwardly. He was seriously getting the feeling that Cassandra was catching on to them. He knew was a bit foolish of them in the bar the other night. But he couldn’t help it. He needed Emmy.
“Well, thanks for letting me talk to you about this.” Cassandra tried to keep the smile from her face. Everything was making sense now. She just needed one more final piece of the puzzle to solve it.
“Anytime. Anything that concerns Emmy, I want to know about.” Gerry found himself coming across very protective, and frankly he could care less. Emmy was important to him. He would protect her at all costs.
“Oh of course.” Cassandra said most assuredly. “But now, I need to get to my seat. I’ll see you later. Bye Gerry.” She gave a small wave as she turned to head down the hallway.
Closing the door behind her, Gerry let out a deep sigh. What was that all about? He suddenly felt like a kid who had been busted with an issue of Playboy by his mum. The only thing that would be worse was if his mum
had been the one questioning him just now. He had a deep sense of foreboding in his stomach. This was not good.

For the first time in a long time, Cassandra was moved by the sheer power of the story being played out in front of her. She hadn’t been to the theater in almost five years. Yet with her best friend down there singing her heart out, Cassandra could feel every emotion that Christine was going through. As she watched Emmy, Cassandra couldn’t help but feel pride. Emmy had worked hard to get where she was today. She was like a star on stage, shining brightly.
“Aren’t they great together?” Tonya leaned over and whispered.
She was sitting next to Gerry’s assistant, and the more she talked to her, the more Cassandra liked her. She was finding out all about Gerry as the show went on. As far as she could tell, all in all Gerry really was a nice guy. Whereas she was worried about the age thing at first, after talking to him tonight she felt a bit more comfortable about it. If her hunches were right, Gerry cared a lot about her best friend.
“Yea, the characters are so vivid. Especially with Gerry and Emmy throwing all they have in there.” Cassandra whispered.
It was nearing the end of the show, and both women sat, spellbound, as on the stage Christine stood, tormented by the weight of her impending decision, while the Phantom held Raoul’s life in his hands at the end of his rope. Cassandra found that she had moved to the edge of her seat. Even though she had seen the movie and the musical on Broadway, there was something about the performance tonight. There was such chemistry and sexual tension between Emmy and Gerry it seemed almost too real to be truly just acting.
Just as Cassandra thought she couldn’t handle the anticipation any longer, Emmy walked up to Gerry. As Christine, Emmy sang of her desire to help the Phantom. She reached up to stroke Gerry’s cheek, knowing she was straying from the scripted directions just a tiny bit. But she had to touch him. For some reason, tonight as Erik, his eyes reached out for her as they filled up with wanting. Then she made her move. Her lips came down softly on his in what was supposed to be a semi romantic kiss. But once again, the instant that their lips touched, a firestorm went up between them. Gerry growled low in his throat as Emmy’s fingers dug into his wig as she pulled him closer. Her mouth opened up as the tip of his soft wet tongue slid between her lips. Hers answered back as it flicked over his. Their lips massaged each other’s as her arms went up around his back, hanging on for dear life.
“Oh my good God!” Cassandra breathed as she stared at the stage. It was as if she were caught up in someone else’s dream. She felt like a peeping tom. Part of her wanted to cover her eyes with her hands. It was like catching your friend in the middle of sex with her boyfriend. That’s when it hit her. Cassandra watched as Emmy pulled away a little bit only to have Gerry pull her back in for another kiss. It wasn’t as drawn out as the first one, but still resonated with the same emotions. Watching them on stage, she could see the way Emmy looked into Gerry’s eyes and it had nothing to do with the show. They weren’t acting! To Cassandra, everything made sense now. The missing time in the bar, the looks they gave to each other…all of it.
“What?” Tonya looked up from the program she was reading.
“Did you see that?” Cassandra nodded towards the stage.
“See what?” Tonya looked up at the stage only to see Gerry pushing Emmy away, singing that she should go with Raoul.
Staring back at the stage, Cassandra shook her head. “Nothing, I guess.” Even though Tonya may not have seen it, the image wouldn’t leave Cassandra’s mind. The kiss she just saw was no ordinary stage kiss. She could see the feeling and emotion pass between Gerry and Emmy. Watching the rest of the show, Cassandra almost felt numb. Why would her friend keep something this important from her? Then shame flooded her. The last time they talked, the deep conversation of how close Emmy was becoming with Gerry hadn’t ended so well. After talking to Gerry tonight, any doubts she had went right out the window. It was clear that her friend was in love. Emmy deserved some happiness, and if Gerry could give it to her who was she to hold them back?

Emmy shivered as she walked through the semi-darkness of the backstage area. She hated walking back here alone, it felt like she was stuck in a bad horror movie. Usually she came out with Heidi and Wendy, but tonight she was running late. Besides, Cassandra would be waiting for her in the lobby. She just had to quickly walk through to the door that would lead to the hallway, then head to the lobby. Taking a step, she took a deep breath as she started to walk towards the door.
“All alone in my opera, mon ange?”
Hearing the voice, Emmy shrieked as she jumped back. Suddenly two strong arms came around to pull her against a hard chest. Two large hands cupped her breasts, kneading softly. In a moment of panic, she began to fight. Then she felt two lips brush over her ear as a husky voice whispered, “You never ran from me before, my love.” She felt those same two lips entrapping her earlobe to suckle softly.
Recognizing Gerry’s voice, she spun around in his arms to face him, and lightly punched him in the shoulder. “YOU!” She could see Gerry’s smiling face in the little bit of light coming from above their heads. “You scared the hell out of me!”
Chuckling, Gerry pulled her closer as he slid his hand up to cup the back of her neck. “Aww I’m sorry love.” He began to rub his thumb over the sensitive part of her neck. “I just wanted a few moments with you alone.” He lowered his head and brushed his lips over hers. “I missed you, and being on stage together isn’t the same thing. During those two hours I’m Erik, I’m fighting for your attention. I’m dealing with the same thing as Gerry.” He pouted as his green eyes twinkled.
“Oh, you poor baby.” Emmy said, in mock pity. She bit her lower lip and giggled. “Are we having a bit of a hard time sleeping alone these days?”
Instead of answering her, his lips came crashing down on hers. She moaned as her mouth opened, issuing the sensual invitation. The soft wetness of his tongue came barging in as he invaded her mouth. Her fingers slid through his hair in an effort to pull him closer. His hand slid down to cup her ass as he yanked her closer, pressing his erection against her. “Does that answer your question, Emmy Grey?” His voice came out hoarse.
Smirking, her hands slide down between them to cup him on the outside of his jeans. “No but this does.” She squeezed gently.
Gerry let his head fall back as he groaned, his eyes closing in pure pleasure. “Fuck!” He hissed through clenched teeth. He put his hands on her shoulders for support. “Don’t tease me baby.” He could barely get the words out.
Making short work of the buttons that held his jeans together, Emmy slid her hands into the band and past the black boxer briefs he wore to curl her hand around him. She then pushed down his jeans to pull him out of his confinement. Brushing her thumb over the smooth head caused him to jerk in her hand as he moaned. “Who’s teasing?” She whispered as she began to stroke him from base to tip.
“If you aren’t going to finish, then you need to stop.” Gerry growled.
“Now who said I wasn’t going to finish?” She asked as she began to quicken her pace, her palm sliding against the hardness of his shaft.
Gerry sucked his breath as his hips began to thrust against her. He held onto her shoulders for dear life as he fucked her hand. She was using both hands now; creating friction that was driving him crazy. He knew it was insane to be doing this here, but then again, that was part of the fun. Emmy was slowly emerging from her shyness to become more playful, which usually only had him ending up hard and throbbing.
“I love it when you’re this hard.” Emmy whispered in the darkness, thankful he couldn’t see the blush that stained her cheeks. “I only wish things were a bit different and you could be inside me.”
Her words were having a direct effect on him. Growling low in his throat, he thrusted harder into her awaiting hands. He could feel the recognizable tightness in his sacs as his fingers dug into her shoulders. “Fuck, Emmy…I’m-“
Without warning the door leading to the back hallway flung open, flooding them in bright light. Both Emmy and Gerry jumped in shock and fear, and Emmy shrieked again. Gerry had been on the verge of coming in Emmy’s hands before they were interrupted. Now the two of them were scurrying to try and hide what they had been doing. As he tried to shove himself back into his jeans, he groaned. He was still a bit hard and it wasn’t easy to tuck it back in.
Emmy turned around to block Gerry when she froze. She saw the figure standing in the doorway, and her jaw dropped. Cassandra stood there, looking mortified as she stared at her best friend. “Oh hell…”
