He almost started crying again.
He was driving down the road, on his way home, and he suddenly had a flashback to the night he found her, lying against the tub. It had been a few weeks only, but he'd had nightmares almost everynight about her. He would walk into the house, the quiet, tomblike house. He'd check every room for her, and finally find her in the bathroom. Only this time, she was dead. This time, no matter how much her rocked her, and held her, and told her that he loved her, she never woke up. He'd wake up, sweating, tears streaming down his face. He could still see her pale blue face, dead eyes staring up at him....
He never told her about those dreams. If she woke up, he'd tell her that he'd dreamed about something else, anything else, or that a noise woke him up. He didn't want her to know the pain it still caused him. That would only increase her guilt more. And then, well, maybe his nightmares would become real.....
He pulled over on the side of the road. He wiped furiously at his eyes trying to clear away all evidence of the sorrow he still felt in his heart. He had to be strong for her. He had to be happy for her. He had to let her get over it, so he could get over it too.
He thought about her smile. He thought about her smell, the way she giggled when she laughed at his jokes. He thought about their house, and the memories, good ones, that they'd shared there. He was so in love with her. So in love.....
Smiling now, he looked at the small velvet box sitting on the seat next to him. He picked it up gingerly, cradling the blue package in his palms. He stuck it in his pocket. She probably thought he was going out for groceries. Wouldn't she be pleasantly surprised?

He knew something was wrong as soon as he pulled into the driveway. He saw Gerard's car, and his heart leaped into his throat. Oh God, why is he here?! Leaving the keys in the ignition, he ran to the front door pushing it open. "Luca?" he called.
Silence answered him. Cold, tomblike silence.
His heart pounding he walked through the house slowly, the sense of deja vu rising in time with his increasing terror. He gently pushed open the bathroom door, expecting.....
But there was nothing there. He sighed a tremendous sigh of relief and stepped into the bedroom.
The sight that greeted him was hardly better than the one he'd been expecting. He saw a teary, frightened Luca lying on her stomach on the bed, her hands bound, and her mouth gagged. Her shirt was pushed up and her pants were pulled down. His stomach felt as if it was going to explode. He immediately started towards her.
Suddenly Gerard was there, standing in front of him, holding a hand out as if to stop him by sheer will alone. He lunged towards Gerard, pushing violently towards the bed. "What the FUCK, man! What have you done to her, you son of a BITCH?!" he yelled, lunging towards him again.
Gerard reached his arm out calmly, holding Frank back. "Take it easy, Frank, and no one gets hurt." He waved the unseen knife he had been carrying in Luca's direction. Frank immediately backed off, his chest heaving with rage.
"Gerard, what are you doing? Let her go!" he yelled again.
Gerard just sighed, patronizingly, and looked at him. "I can't do that Frank."
"Yes! Yes you can! Just leave! I'm the one you have the problem with! Luca, she doesn't deserve this! She's not the one you should be angry with! If it's anyone, it's me!" Frank was just babbling now, trying to get Gerard to leave Luca alone. Gerard nodded along with his words.
"Yes, I know that. You are the one I have to deal with. I just did this so that she wouldn't try and do something stupid. She wouldn't want you to have some sort of accident, would she?" He smiled, a sick, tortured smile, and continued.
"You see, Luca seems to think that she loves you. And that, well, that's just a problem for me. You've brainwashed her. You've made her believe that you love her, that she belongs with you. And she doesn't seem to understand that she belongs with me. She belongs to me. So, I'm giving you a chance to say goodbye to her, to show you that I'm a nice guy. I'm not just going to steal her away from you, like you did to me!" At the last part, his voice rose, and Frank backed off a little more.
"Gerard, man, I know you've been through some tough times, okay? I know that you miss Beth, I know. But you can't just kidnap someone and make them fall in love with you! You can't just --"
Gerard locked his gaze with Frank, a dangerous gleam in his green eyes. "No, Frank. She loves me. Don't you, Luca?" He turned towards her, her eyes growing wide with fear. She knew she had to answer him, but she couldn't speak with the gag in her mouth. She just stayed still, tears streaming down her face, coughing against the gag when her nose got plugged.
"ANSWER ME!" he ripped the tape off of her mouth, leaving an angry red mark accross her chin and cheeks. He sat down violently on the bed, wrapping a hand around her throat. Her eyes grew wide as he held the knife to her jaw. "Luca," his voice became soft again as he held her wide-eyed stare, trailing the knife along her jaw and up accross her cheek and lips. She trembled with every breath. He was so unstable, she was certain that she was going to die. "Tell him. Tell him the truth."
As she stared at him, seeing the madness, the pain in his eyes for the first time. He believed what he was saying. He honestly believed that she loved him. He was sick, and desperate, and lonely. That had driven him to do this. He had just wanted someone to love him. She opened her mouth to speak, her tears now flowing out of pity rather than fear. He wouldn't hurt her, really, she knew that now. He loved her, in his own sick, twisted way. Taking her away, forcing her to be with him was the only way he could conceive of her being with him.
"I'm sorry Gerard. I love you, but it's not the same.....it's not the way I love Frank. I know you're a good person.....You just need help..." she trailed off, leaving the words to sink into his brain.
He shook his head, trying desperately to comprehend what she was saying. "No, Luca. That's not.....that can't be......"
"Yes. Yes, Gerard. It's the truth. Listen to me." She spoke softly, trying to break through the wall of pain she saw around him. "You don't love me, you want to own me. It's not the same thing." He turned his face away from her, tears in his eyes. He finally listened to her. All those times he had convinced himself that she wanted him, it wasn't true. She was attracted to him once. But how could she even begin to love someone who had hurt her the was he had.
He was such a.... words didn't even begin to describe what he had been. He looked back at her, saw the sadness in her eyes. She didn't delight in what she had told him, but it was the truth.
"Luca," whispered, dropping the knife to the floor. "I need help...."
Gerard grunted, his body heaving forward. He looked at her in confusion, his eyes glassy and red. His mouth opened to speak, but no words came forth. What's happening to me?
She looked up at him, blood blossoming on the front of his shirt, and knew what had happened. She screamed as he fell on top of her, dead before he landed on her chest.
