Chloe came to in stages. She could hear people around her, but their breathing was heavy, like in sleep. She started to panic, but opened her eyes. She found the room she was in pitch black, making the panic in her rise full force. She couldn’t see anything and those around her were either asleep, or hurt really bad.
She heard someone move, someone who hadn’t had a heartbeat, hadn’t been breathing. She jumped as a hand touched her shoulder and found herself squeak.
“Shh, Chloe, it’s me.” Ryan’s voice made her relax a little and realize that she couldn’t feel anything. Her body was numb, and that made her heartbeat speed up in fear, but Ryan was already on it. “Naida and the doctors both medicated you to prevent you from feeling any pain. You were hurt pretty badly.”
His fingers moved through her hair gently and that more than anything made her heart flutter in fear. “Where …” Chloe cleared her throat and tried again. “Where is Brendon?”
She felt Ryan move his head to the other side of the room and moved her eyes, though she couldn’t see anything. She moved like she was going to get up and Ryan pushed her down. “I’ll turn on the lights.”
He moved away from her and she moved again, though quickly realized she wasn’t going anywhere. The lights came on, blinding her slightly. She gained her eyes sight back and turned to look at the other bed.
Brendon lay on the bed, barely breathing, heart barely beating. She tried to move for him but found her body uncooperative. She growled and moved a little toward him, but had to stop to catch her breath. She screamed in frustration and turned to look at him again.
He was naked from the waist up, except for the gauze wrapped around his body, soaked in blood. His breathing was labored and she heard his heart stop before resuming beating even slower than it had before.
He was dying, had probably died and been brought back all ready, and she couldn’t move to help him. She started to cry and found Ryan holding her hand, patting it soothingly. She had almost forgotten he was there. “Ryan, I need to get to Brendon. He’s dying. Please, get me to him.”
Ryan looked at Brendon and shook his head. “Naida said that any movement could make him even worse than he is. She healed his heart, but the rest she was unable to help. We’re all shocked he’s lasted this long. I don’t think I should chance it, Chloe.”
Chloe managed to get a death grip on Ryan, even though she couldn’t feel her own hand. “Get me over to him now! He doesn’t have time for you to argue with me.”
Ryan’s eyes were wide as he nodded and scooped her gently into his arms, moving her to Brendon’s bedside. He hesitated a moment before setting Chloe gently beside Brendon’s unconscious body.
Chloe ran her fingertips gently along Brendon’s forehead, nose, jaw, neck, collarbone, stopping just above the gauze. She had never seen him look so frail, so un-Brendon. She bit her lip and took a deep breath before yanking the gauze clean away, sending it flying across the room.
She gasped at the mess that had been his chest. She held her hand over the wound, but would not touch him. His chest was like so much meat, bloody and raw, open to the world.
She could see his heart through the hole and knew the instant it stopped beating. “No …” She hit him just above the wound, trying to jump start his heart, but nothing happened. “No! Brendon, come back to me!”
She heard Ryan head to the door and call for Naida and the doctor. They wouldn’t get here in time to save him, if there was a chance to save him. It was something Chloe was certain of, something she knew deep down inside. She was about to lose her best friend, her love.
Shaking her head, she found the strength to sit up. “I’m not losing you, Brendon Boyd Urie.” She felt her eyes go complete green, her skin translucent, and her fangs elongate. She heard Ryan move quickly toward her as she bit her wrist, but he was going to be too late.
She pushed power into her blood as she let it drop onto the open wound of Brendon’s chest, hitting his heart with a wet splatter sound. Nothing happened. More blood, more power, and the tissue around the heart started to reform, his chest becoming whole once again, but still, no heartbeat.
Chloe felt the wound on her wrist close up and didn’t understand. She had brought many animals and a few people back from the dead with this same method, why was it not working on Brendon? She felt the tears come to her eyes and knew that she had failed him.
A few stray tears touched his bare chest and a ragged breath came from deep within his throat. Chloe sobbed, recognizing it as a death rattle. She leaned into the man she loved so and kissed him gently on the lips. “I’ll always love you, Brendon, always.”
She felt hands on her, but screamed and kicked to stay near him, stopping only when she heard it. The faintest little thump, but she heard it. “Stop! Let go of me!” She threw power into Jon and Ray as they tried to pull her away, and they were sent into the bed behind her.
She moved back to Brendon’s side, crying harder as he opened his brown eyes and smiled at her. “Hey, beautiful, why so sad?”
Chloe sobbed as he pulled her into his arms, brushing her hair out of her face and letting her cry. He looked around the room at the others and frowned. “Um, what happened? Why is Chloe so upset?”
Ryan was the first to recover from the shock of Brendon’s miraculous healing and resurrection. “You died, Brendon. You weren’t coming back.”
“Ridiculous. I’m alive now, aren’t I?” Brendon handed his arm to Naida as she stood by the bed and she took it gingerly. “So, Naida? Am I alive?”
Naida nodded, still shocked. “This shouldn’t be possible. You were dead at least ten minutes.”
“No, he wasn’t.” Chloe pulled away from Brendon enough to look up at Naida. “He was only gone for like two minutes.”
“Chloe, honey.” Ryan drew her attention to him. “Brendon died as I lay you on the bed. You stared at him for a good five minutes after he died before moving to heal him. I thought you were in shock.”
“No …” Chloe closed her eyes and seemed to think about it, but her thoughts were slow, sluggish. “Why can’t I think right?”
“Morphine, lots and lots of morphine.” Dr. Travis Walsh stood at the foot of Brendon’s bed looking down at Chloe and Brendon. “That would be the reason you only thought you were on the bed for a few minutes.”
Chloe groaned and lay back against Brendon. She hated morphine. It always slowed her reaction time by more than half and she couldn’t take that. She had nearly lost Brendon forever because of the drug.
She felt Brendon run his fingers through her hair and moved up enough so that she could kiss him like she had wanted to the moment she saw him hurt. He returned the kiss and they heard relieve laughter from the doorway.
Alex ran into the room and wrapped his arms around both Chloe and Brendon, kissing Brendon with as much passion as Chloe just had before kissing Chloe softly on the lips. “They called and said that Brendon was dead. They said that Chloe had had a breakdown and they didn’t think she was going to come out of it. Oh my gods! I’m so glad you two are okay.”
Chloe smiled and allowed her ‘cousin’ to hug her and Brendon. She was almost sad though that she no longer had Brendon to herself, but then she felt that familiar pull of the new power inside her.
She shot bolt upright and shook her head. “Fuck.” She looked down at her stomach, feeling the power well up there and shook her head. “Someone get me some blood, now!”
Maybe she could feed one with the other. It seemed to work for most things. Alcoholics who were also druggies fed the alcohol urges with drugs, why couldn’t she feed the sex with blood?
No one moved. She felt like screaming as the morphine started to subside with the power coursing through her veins. “Either someone get me some blood packets, or someone open a vein, because something bad is about to happen if I don’t get it ASAP.” Everyone looked at each other, but it was Jon who stepped forward and sat in front of her, baring his neck.
The shock of seeing the scary Slayer who had tried to kill her for being a vampire bare his neck to her was enough to push the power down a little bit. “Jon? What are you doing?”
“You need blood. No one else is offering, and I see that panic in your eyes that says you’re serious. Take it.” He was so calm, so collective.
Chloe frowned, but felt her fangs elongate anyway and knew that it was now or never. She lowered her mouth to his bare neck and breathed in the scent of his aftershave, his skin, and then bear. It was the smell of a cave in the depths of winter, of warmth, of security and protection.
She breathed in that scent and lowered her mouth to place a kiss on the big pulse in her neck before sinking her fangs into that thumping, wild thing. She felt the blood poured into her mouth and gasped at the power behind it. Bill hadn’t been kidding when he said that Jon was a powerful werebear. He was more powerful that anything Chloe had ever touched before. That one thought made her glad that he was on her side.
She released him and leaned back against Brendon for a moment, letting the blood and the power fill her body, but that need was still inside her and she felt the panic grown greater. “It didn’t work. Fuck …. I don’t know what to do.”
“What do you need to feed, Chloe?” Ray was always the one to think of all the right questions when Chloe couldn’t think at all.
“The … I don’t know what to call it. La Feu, the fire.” She looked at Ray with pleading eyes, begging him to know what she was talking about.
He nodded, understanding and gestured around the room. “Who does it call to, Chloe?”
“You know?” Chloe was shocked that he knew that it called to people.
“Ryan told us about earlier. How you seemed to act weird around him. Bill, Naida, and I put our heads together and figured it has to choose who it wants when it needs to feed.”
“What is it chooses someone who doesn’t want to feed it? What will I do then?” Chloe heard the fear in her own voice as she looked at Ray, hoping against hope that he knew the answers to the questions she had.
“I don’t know, Chloe, but everyone in this building knows about your new condition and are willing to feed it in anyway they can. Even those of us who you have always considered family. It might not discriminate because of that.” Ray looked almost angry at this last comment, like he had seen something similar that hadn’t ended well.
Chloe knew that Ray meant himself, but she wanted to make sure when it came to the others in the room. “Is this true, Alex, Jon, Dr. Walsh? Are you willing to feed the hunger if it calls to you?”
“I’m willing to do anything to keep you safe, Chlo, you know that. And if having sex with you keeps you alive and safe, I’m all for it.” Alex smiled playfully, having the mysterious glint in his eyes like he was thinking naughty thoughts.
Chloe ignored the look and turned to Jon. “What about you?”
“We’re friends, Chloe. I would do anything for my friends.”
“And you, Dr. Walsh?”
“Call me Travie, and I understand that bad things could happen if I were to refuse, so I will not refuse such a beautiful lady.” Chloe had heard that Travis Walsh had a personality similar to that of Alex, now she had seen it and knew that she would like him.
“Well, that’s good, Travie, but you’re safe tonight.” She turned to Alex and sighed. “For tonight, let’s say you’re my godparents’ son and in no way related to me. My one question is: Are you too gay for this?”
“What do you mean, Chloe?”
Brendon smiled and slid from the bed easily. “She means, Alex, that we’re all going to leave so that the two of you can be alone for a while.” He leaned into Chloe and kissed her gently before doing the same to Alex. “Be careful of this one, Alex. She’s a firecracker in the sack.” He whispered playfully against Alex’s lips, causing Chloe to hit him playfully.
“Get out of here, Brendon. Go get cleaned up. Let Nia and Brianna know you’re alright. Bastard.”
“Yeah, but I’m one sexy bastard you just love to have … over and over again.” Brendon laughed that masculine laugh that said he loved the way Chloe turned a few shades of red. She tossed a pillow at him, but he dodged it and escorted the others out the door, throwing a parting comment over his shoulder. “Have fun you two.”
Chloe growled at the door before looking back at Alex. “I’m sorry, Alex.” She looked down at her feet, not knowing where to go.
She blushed a bright red at the images that came to her mind from the power, which knew exactly where to go from here. She balled her hands into fists to stop from touching Alex in all the ways her mind told her to touch him.
She was more than shock when she found his hands untying the front of the hospital gown she was wearing, slipping his hands inside against her bare skin. “Don’t look so shocked, Chloe. I have been bisexual for years. Everyone just assumed that because I was only with Brendon that I was only gay. Now everyone will know that both Brendon and I like at least one girl.”
Chloe blushed at the comment and felt his lips on hers, kissing her as he normally did at first. She couldn’t ride the power any longer and deepened the kiss, but he returned it with as much fire and gusto. His hands began to work the hospital gown off her until she was laying in front of him in nothing but her skin.
He sat up enough to strip off his shirt and undo his pants, throwing both across the room before sliding back onto the bed beside her. He stared down at her body for a minute before shaking his head. “Brendon was right. You are beautiful to look at. I haven’t figured out what we haven’t done this before, Chloe. I mean, we live in the same house, have slept in the same bed. I’ve woken up with a boner before and trust me when I say that it wasn’t because it was morning.”
If Chloe thought she couldn’t blush deeper, she was wrong. She closed her eyes to try to regain her composure enough to speak and felt his hands move down her body, caressing her inner thigh. She unconsciously spread her legs to give him better access and opened her eyes to find him smiling down at her. “What?”
“Nothing, Chloe. I was just thinking about how we got into this situation. All because you wanted to come to New Haven to find your heritage. Yet, if we had stayed in Contract Valley, we wouldn’t be here right now, would we?”
“No, we wouldn’t.” His fingers were laying along the edge of her opening, not quite touching but teasing, as if it was nothing for him to be doing this.
She held her breath, knowing what was coming, and felt his fingers enter her hard and fast, causing a gasp to escape her lips. She gasped again as his tongue flicked across her nipple in a wet line. He looked up at her as his mouth locked onto her nipple and he began to suck, drawing as much of her into his mouth as he could.
It had been different with Ryan and Brendon. They had just dove right in, but Alex was taking his precious time, time Chloe didn’t have. “Not that I don’t really, really enjoy the foreplay, Alex, but I don’t have time for too much. The fire is burning me from the inside out.”
She knew that her body was feverish and hoped that he felt it too. He nodded, seeming to understand. “Some other time then.”
Chloe nodded and moved a little so that he could move into position without falling off the bed first. He kissed her to distract her as he gently pushed himself inside her. It was a weird sensation and Chloe frowned. She looked down his body and gasped slightly, seeing the ridges that ran up and down his lower body and groin areas. “What is that, Alex?”
Alex smiled, but it was sad. He pulled out of her, but made no attempt to move back inside her. She now had a perfect view of the blue and gray scales that etched his groin. She reached out and touched them gently, finding them soft and smooth. The touch sent a shutter through Alex’s body, but he made no move to continue what they had started. “They’re scales, Chloe. It happens every time I get excited. That’s why I’ve only been with three people my entire life. I can understand if you don’t want to continue.”
He rolled over and laid on his back, looking up at the ceiling. Chloe frowned and shook her head. “Like hell I’m stopping now.”
She moved between his legs, kind of slow and sluggish, still slightly doped up, and wrapped her fingers roughly around his now soft groin. She lowered her head, watching his eyes carefully, and flicked her tongue out to lick the head of his erection. She took it into her mouth and began to suck it gently, getting the feel of the scales down.
She heard him moan softly and moved her way up his body, kissing along his stomach and up his chest until she met his lips, kissing him hard. She moved her body back down his until she had him positioned just right, thrusting her hips forwarding and making him enter her harder and faster than he would have done it himself.
The scales provided a little more friction, but the effect was more intense than anything she had experienced over the last few days with Ryan and Brendon. She kept the rhythm she had started fast and hard, but didn’t know if she could keep it up long enough to bring him as well as her self.
There must have been something on her face because Alex stopped her and put her onto her back, entering her hard and fast, not even giving her time to catch her breath. He was stronger than she had thought at first and the scales felt like they were ripping her insides out, though she knew that they couldn’t possibly be doing that.
She tried to take a deep breath, but lost it all as the orgasm brought her screaming. She ran her nails down Alex’s back, cutting it open in long thin lines, but he merely moaned in pleasure as he gave the final thrust inside her and spilled his elixir of life deep inside her.
He pulled out of her and lay next to her, trying to catch his breath as much as letting her catch hers. “Wow, Chloe, Brendon was right. You are a firecracker in bed.”
Chloe barely managed to get her arm up enough to hit Alex playfully on the shoulder. “Just remember that I was still very heavily medicated. I’m a lot better when I don’t have morphine running through my system. You’ll just have to find out how much better later.”
Alex sat up on his elbows and looked down at her. “Is that a promise?”
Chloe looked into his oh-so-serious eyes and nodded. “I promise that eventually you’ll get to see what it’s really like to be with me, un-medicated.”
Alex smiled and leaned down, kissing her softly. “Good. Now we should probably get you cleaned up so we can get upstairs and deal with everything we have to deal with today.”
Chloe sat up, only to be caught by Alex’s hands as she fell over. “Wow, Alex, I don’t even think it was this back with Brendon. You’re pretty amazing yourself, you know? And those scales? My god! I’ve never felt anything so amazing in my life.”
Alex blushed bright red and picked her up gently in his arms, carrying her to the room’s bathroom. “Most freak out over them, Chloe, I thought you would too.”
“I’ve seen a lot of weird shit over the last few days, Alex. I feed off sex now. I don’t think anything can shock me any more. Besides how much it takes out of me to be with you guys. My gods, I can barely move, nevertheless walk. What have you all been doing over the years? Taking private lessons?”
Alex laughed and sat her gently in the tub, turning on the warm water. “Not really. Maybe we were just born with the amazing talent to make you weak in the knees.” He started to clean her off, but like Ryan, it wasn’t in anyway sexual. He was very much back to being her overprotective cousin.
“Alex?”
“Yeah.” He stopped and looked up at her.
She leaned into him and kissed him, exploring every ounce of his mouth with hers. He returned the kiss and, before she knew it, she was under him in the tub. She wrapped her legs around his waist and heard the soft moan come from him as he slipped himself inside her again. She hadn’t thought it would go this far, but she no longer cared as he began his hard, fast rhythm. The water made it all the more intense and they both came quicker than they had before, laying in the water in each other’s arms.
Alex was the first to recover and sighed, pulling that last little bit of himself out of her. “Did you know that was going to happen if you kissed me, Chloe?”
“Not really, Alex, but gods was I hoping.”
Alex laughed and shook his head. He sat up and starting to clean himself, as well as her, off. “You’re awful, Chlo.”
“I know, Alex, but don’t you love me for that?”
“You know I do.” He crawled out of the bathtub and tried himself off, walking into the hospital room and grabbing his clothes, coming back fully clothed. He helped her stand and dried her off, smiling. “Just like when we kids, save the phenomenal sex.”
Chloe shook her head and accepted his help in getting her clothes on. She nearly fell a few times just trying to stand on one leg enough to get her underwear on, only caught by his hand on her back.
When she finally stood dressed in front of him, she sighed, taking in the sight of him standing there in his jeans and tight T-shirt. Just the sight of him now made things low in her body tighten, and she was afraid of what she would do with him, Ryan, Brendon, and Spencer in the same room.
She shook her head and walked unsteadily out the door. “Come on, we have to go see what’s going on.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
What was going on seemed to be that Coltrane, the Scottish gentleman who had been so supportive of Chloe’s decision to go to war with the vampires, was lying bloodied and nearly dead in her office.
“What the hell is going on?” It was the only thing she could think of saying as her and Alex walked into the room and took in the sight of the large bloody man. “What happened to Coltrane?”
“He was scouting the outer limits of the city with a group of people to make sure that our sources were correct and that the Master wasn’t going to show up until tomorrow night. Our inside sources were killed as were the rest of Coltrane’s group. He’s coming tonight, Chloe.” Bill was looking at her like he expected her to have an answer for everything, on this subject luckily she did.
She walked over to her phone on her desk and dialed the number to make an announcement over the intercom. “All shooters who are going to help in the fight against the Master need to report to sub-basement 3 in fifteen minutes. This is not a drill. Jon Walker, Naida Poole, Brendon and Brianna Urie, Spencer and Rick Smith, Ray Toro, and Nia Iero report to my office immediately.”
She hung up the phone and walked over to Coltrane. “His heart’s weak. He’s lost too much blood.” She fell to her knees in front of him and leaned into him, smelling along his skin. “He’s been bitten. I can’t save him without turning him.”
“I don’t know if he would want that, Chloe.”
“I know, Bill, but we have to ask.” Chloe slapped Coltrane so that he woke up. “Coltrane? Can you hear me?” A nod. “I can’t save you without turning you into a vampire. If I turn you though, you’ll be like Ryan. Small doses of sunlight, a little food and drink, not completely vampire. What do you think?”
Coltrane seemed to go out of it for a moment before shaking his head to revive himself. “Do it, Ms. Bryar. I trust ye.”
Chloe nodded and bit her wrist, allowing the blood to drip onto Coltrane’s lips. He flinched at first, but licked the blood from his lips and then grabbed her wrist gently, drinking slowly. He released her when he had no more than a couple of mouthfuls and shuttered.
Chloe had never seen anyone turned into a vampire, having been unconscious when Ryan had turned, so she watched the older man’s skin go translucent, hair and face growing younger and younger. His entire appearance changed. He was no longer the forty-something year old man she had just had lying in front of her, but a twenty-five year old man, looking fresh as a daisy.
“How do you feel, Coltrane?”
“I feel amazing, Ms. Bryar. Like I haven’t felt in nearly twenty years.” Coltrane didn’t move and Chloe knew that it was because the blood was still working on his body.
“Call me Chloe. How long have you been sick, Coltrane?”
“What do ye mean, Chloe? I have never been sick.”
“I could feel the sickness coming off you the first time I met you, Coltrane. How long has it been since you were healthy?” Chloe leaned back on her heels and looked at Coltrane, listening to the sound of people coming toward her office as she did so.
“I found out when I was just barely twenty-five that I was going to be in pain for the rest of me life. How did ye know?”
Chloe sighed and went to the desk, pulling a mirror out of the top drawer and walking back over to Coltrane. “When making someone a vampire, unless they were always sick, the power makes them look as they did the last time they were healthy.” She handed Coltrane the mirror and heard the gasp of shock. “You were young when you were last healthy.”
“I can’t believe it. Thank ye, Chloe.”
“Not a problem, Coltrane. For me, that is. You realize these means you’re bound to me for eternity, right?”
“Yes, ma’am. I realize that, but I was bound to ye until the day I died anyway, so this is just a little longer.” Coltrane smiled up at her and she couldn’t help by smile back. “Ye’re very beautiful when ye’re not thinking about saving the world, Chloe. Ye should smile more often.”
Chloe shrugged just as the door opened. She didn’t bother to turn as arms wrapped around her waist and Brendon kissed her neck. “Are you okay, Chloe?”
“I’m fine, Brendon. How do you feel?” She turned around in his arms, glancing behind him to find Spencer staring at her. She ignored him and kissed Brendon, having still thought that her magic wasn’t strong enough and he would die as soon as he walked around somewhere.
“I’m fine, Chloe. Good as new. Better actually. Though I think we have a little problem.”
“We have several problems, Brendon, but what problem are you talking about?” Chloe was scared to know what his problem was. She wasn’t willing to think she had more to deal with than the Master right now.
“This.” Brendon opened his mouth and Chloe gasped as his incisors elongated in fangs. “That’s exactly what I thought. I don’t crave blood, but they’re there. Does that normally happen when you save people with your blood?”
“Only if they had a potential to have fangs before my blood mixed with theirs.” Chloe touched one of the fangs and remembered something she had found in the office the other day about faeries. She moved away from Brendon quickly and dug through a drawer, finding the book and opening it to the page she had marked, reading it aloud. “‘Though faeries are considered to be harmless woodland creatures, this is far from the truth. Faeries have a darker side, a side similar to that of the demon or vampire. They have no craving for blood, but have the fangs that allow the vampire to drink of the living. Yet these fangs do not appear until a faerie comes into its full power. Power brought on when the faerie is touched by true love’s kiss awakening them from death.’”
She handed the book to Brendon and flopped beside Coltrane on the couch, looking up at Brendon a little shocked. She had kissed him after he had died. She had been his true love. What did that mean for her and Spencer? Hell, what did that mean for her and Alex? Or her and Ryan? Or Brendon and Alex? Did it really matter?
She shook her head and stood up. “Well, that problem solved, we have to get downstairs and deal with the problem of the Master showing up tonight.”
“What?! He’s coming tonight?” Jon spoke from behind Spencer. “But the sources said …”
“The sources are dead. They were killed off earlier today.” Chloe ignored everyone’s looks and pushed her way through the door to the elevators.
Spencer grabbed her arm and pulled her back. “We need to talk, Chloe.”
“Later, Spencer. I’m not in the mood right now.” She yanked her arm away from him and walked into the elevator, pushing the button to close the door, leaving her alone in the silence.
She didn’t know what she was going to be about this whole relationship thing. She was just going to avoid all the guys until this whole war thing was over with. The question was: Would her new power allow her to ignore the guys?
