Chapter 17: If You’ve Got Leavin’ on Your Mind...
∞♥♥♥♥∞
The twins’ second birthday came and went. It seemed like they had just celebrated their first birthday. Now I knew what my mom meant when she said I grew up too fast on her. The twins were definitely growing up too fast for Chris and I.
They could walk good now—a little too good.
They didn’t call it the terrible twos for nothing. Colin and Bliss were becoming a real handful, but nevertheless, I loved them more with every day that passed. They were two of the three best things that ever happened to me. Chris being the other one.
“Colin, no! Ugh! Not again,” I heard Chris complain from the living room.
I was in the music room, trying to work on a new song. Going in there, I knew I could be called out at any moment. It seemed the twins always were getting into some kind of trouble.
I put my guitar down, and headed out to the living room. On the way there, I peered into Bliss’ room, and was grateful to see that she was still sleeping.
When I got to the living room, I saw Chris was scrubbing the floor. Colin was standing there with his pants and diaper down.
“He peed on the floor again?” I asked.
Chris nodded. “Yes. I’m even more grateful for hardwood floors ever since we got the kids. Will you change him, please?”
I picked up Colin and headed towards his room. “Not that he needs changing. He peed on the floor; not his diaper.” Even so, when I got to Colin’s room, I set him on the changing table, and got him a fresh diaper. I changed him, and pulled his pants back up. “Baby, why do you do that? You have to go in your diaper; not on the floor.” I looked into Colin’s eyes, and he smiled.
“I sorry Dada.”
I grinned. Now that the twins were two, they would surprise Chris and I practically every day by saying something new. I knew Colin was going to be smart if he was already comprehending when to apologize, or what an apology even was. And they say boys learn slower. Ha!
I kissed Colin’s head, and stroked his hair. “It’s okay, baby. You know, if you’re taking your diaper off like that, you might be ready to wear big boy pants and go on the toilet.”
“I’m a big boy!” Colin laughed, and clapped his hands together.
I laughed. “Yes, you are.”
“What’s he so happy about? Not that I’m complaining.” Chris walked into the room, grinning brightly, as he always did with our kids present.
“I think he likes the idea of being potty trained,” I said.
“Do you think he’s ready?” Chris walked over to Colin.
As soon as Colin saw Chris, he smiled big, and held his hands up in the air. “Daddy, hold!”
Chris smiled even brighter (if that were possible), and picked Colin up. He kissed Colin’s cheeks, and Colin smiled.
“I think he’s ready. He’s always taking his diaper off. I don’t think he likes sitting in his own mess anymore,” I stated.
He shrugged. “Good point. I just always thought that kids started to potty train later.”
“Well, my mom said I learned around two. All kids are different.” I grinned at Colin, and stroked his soft, blonde hair.
Chris smirked. “You were just eager to not have to wear underwear. I’m surprised you even bothered to wear diapers.”
I laughed. “Trust me, if I was old enough to know better or get away with it, I would have gone diaper free.”
“I bet you took your diapers off like Colin,” Chris added.
I grinned. “Possibly. I should ask my mom. So, should we buy a new toilet for the kids?”
He shrugged. “Bliss never takes her diaper off, but we could try potty training her too. Let’s get them separate toilets—pink for Bliss and blue for Colin.”
Before I could answer, we heard Bliss’ cries coming from her room.
“I’ll go get her up, and then maybe we can go out for lunch and buy their toilets?” I asked.
Chris nodded. “Sounds like a plan.”
So it was set. I got Bliss ready, and soon we were headed off to eat, and look for the perfect toilets for our twins.
Fun.

I didn’t even know how to potty train a child, but that’s what made it exciting. I was learning with Blake how to be a father. We were learning at the same time with our children, and it made it all the more special.
We were able to find a pink toilet, and a blue toilet. I was so excited to get started!
As soon as we got home, we set the toilets up in the bathroom, and then brought the twins in for their first lesson.
We sat them on the toilets.
“Now, go potty,” Blake said.
“Go pee or poop,” I said.
Blake looked at me. “‘Go pee or poop?’ That’s nasty.”
I shrugged. “What? They might not know what potty is.”
He rolled his eyes. “I’m sure they know what potty is.”
“You never know. You have to think like a two-year-old,” I said. I grinned. “Which shouldn’t be too hard for you.”
He gently pushed me. “Shut up.”
Colin saw this, and gently pushed his sister in the potty next to him.
Bliss wined, and pushed back.
“Hey, no pushing,” I gently scolded. I cast a glance at Blake. “See what you started?”
“Well, if you hadn’t insulted me...” he muttered.
“Shut up!” Bliss said.
Blake began laughing hysterically.
“Blake! It’s not funny! We don’t want our kids being smart mouths—especially not at two years old already.”
“I’m sorry. It’s just funny that they pick up on what we say and do,” Blake said, wiping a tear from his eye, for he was laughing so hard that tears had welled up.
I looked over at the twins. Colin had pushed Bliss again. “You shut up!”
“You shut up!” Bliss said, pushing back.
They both started giggling, and repeating the word “shut up” like a mantra now.
I rolled my eyes. “From now on, we’re going to have to be more careful about what we say and do around them.”
Blake nodded. He had finally managed to stop laughing. “You’re right. Well, it’s getting to be nap time. What do you say we give this up for now, and put them down for a nap?”
I nodded. “I don’t think they have to go right now anyway.”
So, we picked up the twins, put their diapers and pants back on, and then lay them down for their naps.
“Daddy, I no tired,” Bliss said.
I smiled. The twins were so eager to talk and please Blake and I, but they constantly said their phrases wrong. One of these days they would learn the difference between no and not. For now though, I was just happy to hear their little mistakes. It’s what kept them little. “You have to take a nap, baby. Just take an hour nap for daddy, okay? Then you can get up, and I’ll play toys with you.”
“Froggy?” She held her hands up, and opened and closed them.
I smiled, then went over to her rocking chair and picked up her favorite stuffed animal, Froggy, that she always had to sleep with. I handed it to her.
She took it and hugged it. “Thank oo.”
There she went with the wrong word again. I smiled, and I stroked her hair, then bent down and kissed the top of her head. “You’re so polite. Daddy loves you so much!”
“Love oo too, Daddy.”
I felt a tear in my eye. I leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Sleep well my little princess.”
I left her room, and gently closed the door behind me. I was the luckiest man on earth, I knew.
I headed towards Colin’s room to see if Blake needed any held with Colin, but met him halfway down the hall.
“Did Bliss go down all right?” he asked.
I nodded. “She said she wasn’t tired, but I think she is.” I winked.
Blake grinned. Colin was tired. He clutched his blankie and sucked his thumb. He’s going to have bucked teeth one day, but I don’t have the heart to tell him to stop.
I wrapped Blake in my arms and kissed him.
He hungrily kissed me back, and then pulled away and licked his lips. “Mm, what was that for? I want to know so I can get another one of those.”
I smirked. “For being such a good father to our children.”
His eyes lowered. “Right back at ya.” He wrapped his arms around me, and kissed me back.
I moaned as he began leading me backwards towards our bedroom. Since the twins had become more active, we didn’t get much romantic time alone together. I needed this right now. I think we both did.
However, before thoughts of undressing could enter my mind, the phone rang.
Blake groaned. “Ignore it.”
“I can’t, baby. It could be important.” I broke away from him to answer the phone.
“What could be more important than getting it on with your dead sex-ay husband?” Blake asked.
I smirked at him, and answered the phone.
B∞C
It was Sligh who had been on the phone. After all these years of being married, he and his wife had finally decided they wanted to have a baby. Sarah, his wife, wanted to get a little practice taking care of babies in, and wanted him to have the practice too. Sligh wanted to know if they could come down and observe us taking care of the twins, maybe help us out a little.
Chris talked it over with me, but of course we were both in agreement that they were welcome to come down. Who were we to turn down help with the twins anyway?
It wasn’t over. Gina found this out, and called us up. She and her husband Joe wanted to have a baby too. Gina thought it was a good idea to learn how to be a parent before actually becoming one. She wanted to come up even though Joe couldn’t get the time off.
We couldn’t say no to her either. Then, I don’t know how, but it somehow got out to Sanjaya that Gina and Sligh were coming down, and he called us.
“I don’t want to have kids anytime soon, but I do love the twins, and would love to see them, Gina and Sligh again. May I please come up too?” Sanjaya had asked.
“Sure, whatever,” I told him.
So, on November 16th, the twins’ half birthday, our friends arrived.
“We’ve got a surprise for you guys,” Gina stated as I drove us all back to the house. Chris was at home with the kids.
“What’s that?” I asked, glancing at her in the rearview mirror.
“Well, I booked you and Chris a suite, which we all chipped in on. We know you two have had your hands full with the twins, so we thought we’d give you guys a night off. We’ll stay at your house and watch the twins, and you guys can stay at the hotel,” Gina announced.
I smiled. “That’s sweet of you guys—no pun intended. But, I don’t know how I feel, leaving the twins.”
“Don’t you trust us?” Sanjaya asked.
“Well, I don’t trust you,” I joked. I glanced in the rearview mirror again, and saw Sanjaya rolling his eyes.
I sighed. “Seriously though, I do trust you guys, and I appreciate what you want to do for us. It’s just that, we’ve never spent a night away from the twins since they were born. What if something goes wrong?”
“Then we'll call you. You both have cell phones, right?” Sligh asked.
“Yes, but—”
Sarah cut me off. “And we’ll have the number to your suite room. Not to mention emergency numbers.”
“Not that there will be any emergencies, because there won’t be,” Gina quickly added. I wondered if she had seen the look of panic on my face.
I sighed again. “I don’t know. I’ll have to talk to Chris about it.”
“Fair enough,” Sarah said.
I didn’t want to sound ungrateful. An uninterrupted night alone with Chris sounded like Heaven, but I could imagine a hundred different scenarios in my head where the twins needed Chris and me, and we weren’t there. I hated sounding like one of those overprotective parents that always annoyed me, but I couldn’t help it.
Oh well. I would see what Chris said, and go from there.
B∞C
“I don’t know. We’ve never spent the night without the twins before,” I said, once Blake had told me of our friends’ surprise for us.
“That’s what I said,” Blake replied.
Gina rolled her eyes. “Will you guys relax, and give us some credit? We’re not totally oblivious on how to take care of a child. I have taken care of my cousins before. They were up to two years older, but still, a life is a life.”
Sligh nodded. “Sarah and I have taken care of my nieces and hers. They range from one to five.”
Sarah nodded as well. “Yeah, and we’re also both older than you two, and therefore more than responsible enough to take care of two two-year-olds.”
“I’ve taken care of my dog and my sister’s cat,” Sanjaya chimed in.
We all looked at him.
“Okay, I’m really not trusting him,” Blake said.
“You know, no offense, Sanjaya but I’m really not either,” I said.
Sanjaya rolled his eyes. “Will you guys relax? I know how to take care of a child. Have I not been good with the twins in the past?”
I thought about it. He was awfully good with them. They were always so smily around him. “You are good with them. I’ll give you that.”
Blake nodded. “Yeah. They really seem to like you for some reason.”
“I’ll ignore that rude comment if you let us watch them,” Sanjaya said.
I sighed, and looked at Blake. “What do you think?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know. What do you think?”
“I think it would be rather nice to have a night alone with you. We haven’t had one of those in years,” I answered.
“Hold up. You mean to tell me, you two haven’t gotten a night to yourselves ever since the twins were born?” Gina asked.
“Well, we’ve...you know…” Blake began.
“But we’ve never had a night out without them. We hadn’t wanted to leave them with a sitter,” I finished.
“Well, then we’re not taking no for an answer. You two are going to go out and enjoy yourselves tonight. The twins are in perfectly capable hands,” Sarah said.
Sligh nodded. “Besides, it’s only for one night, then you can come back here.”
“Where are you guys going to sleep?” I asked.
“Well, if you don’t mind, Sarah and I can sleep in Blake’s and your bed,” Sligh answered.
“And your couch is a pullout, right? I can sleep on that, and Gina can have the spare bedroom,” Sanjaya suggested.
Gina nodded.
“Now I feel bad about Blake and I changing one of the spare bedrooms into our music room,” I said.
“It’s fine. I really don’t mind sleeping on a pullout. They are made to sleep on,” Sanjaya assured me.
I sighed. “Well, if it’s all right with Blake, I surprise one night would be okay. Only one night though! I don’t want to be away from the twins any longer than that. I don’t want them thinking we abandoned them.”
“They won’t think that. They know you love them,” Gina assured me.
“Are you agreeing to this too, Blake?” Sligh asked.
Blake nodded. “I guess so.”
“Good. It’s only four o’clock, so you can use tonight as your night,” Sarah said.
“Let me go put clean sheets on the bed,” I said, heading towards the linen closet.
Sligh wrinkled his nose. “Please do. I’m not sleeping on a bed that has any nasty surprises in it from Blake’s and your nightly escapades.”
Blake grinned, and raised his eyebrows up and down. “Sometimes daily.”
Sligh and Sanjaya both groaned, and threw couch pillows at him.
I smirked. I knew Blake and I were going to have a fun night ahead of us. That is, if we could ever stop worrying about the twins…

“Dada and Daddy are going to go away just for the night. Sligh, Sarah, Gina, and Sanjaya are going to stay with you, okay?” I asked the twins. They were sitting on the couch, looking at me and Chris with wide eyes.
“Where going?” Bliss asked.
“We’re just going to go eat, and then sleep at a hotel,” I told her, not sure how much she could understand.
“Me go too!” Colin said, holding his arms out to Chris.
Chris picked him up and kissed his cheek. “This trip is only for Daddy and Dada. We promise to bring you back a present though. You’ll see us tomorrow.”
“New toy?” Colin asked.
Chris laughed. “Whatever you want. We’ll take you to the toy store, and you can pick out anything you want.”
“Car,” Colin said.
“A car it is. Just not a real one.” Chris winked at him, and kissed his hand.
“Me present too?” Bliss asked, holding her arms up to me.
I picked her up and tickled her. “Of course we’ll get you a toy, silly.”
She giggled. “I love oo, Dada.” She kissed me quickly on the lips.
“Aw, Dada loves you too, very, very much!” I assured her.
Chris and I switched twins, and I kissed Colin’s cheeks while Chris kissed Bliss’.
“Do you love Daddy?” Chris asked Bliss.
Bliss smiled, and put a finger in his mouth.
Chris took it out. “Yucky! Don’t put your finger in my mouth, silly!” He tickled her.
She laughed and did it again.
“Yucky!” Chris said again, tickling her some more.
She laughed even harder. When he stopped tickling her, and she kissed his lips. “I love oo, Daddy.”
He kissed her nose. “I love you too, princess.”
I smiled at the sight, thinking once again how lucky I really was.
B∞C
“Do you love Dada?” Blake asked Colin.
Colin’s eyes lit up, and he gave Blake the most adorable smile. “I love Dada.” He hugged Blake.
Blake hugged him back, and kissed the top of his head. “I love you too, my handsome boy.”
“You guys are so adorable with those twins. They’re lucky to have two amazing dads,” Gina said.
Sanjaya nodded. “Even I have to admit, you’re both great dads. Even Blake.”
Blake grinned at Sanjaya, and I grinned at Gina “Thank you,” we said in unison.
“Now, go. The twins will be fine. We’re going to take excellent care of them, won’t we, guys?” Sarah asked.
Sligh, Gina, and Sanjaya all voiced their agreement.
Sanjaya took Colin from Blake, and Gina took Bliss from me.
“We’ll see you later, babies, okay? You be good for Gina, Sanjaya, Sligh, and Sarah,” I said.
“Kiss, Dada!” Bliss said, holding her arms out to Blake.
I smiled. She had grown attached to him lately. He was so good with her, I didn’t mind sharing. It was his daughter too, after all.
Blake grinned, and ran over to her. They exchanged a quick kiss on the lips.
“Daddy, give kiss!” Colin said, now holding his hands out to me.
I grinned. He was becoming attached to me. I was so proud.
I kissed his cheek, and he kissed mine, then Bliss and I exchanged a quick peck on the lips, and Colin and Blake exchanges kisses on the cheeks.
“It’s harder getting you two out of here than it is pulling teeth. Go!” Gina said, pushing Blake and I towards the door.
“Yes, Ma’am!” I said, saluting her.
“Bye, babies!” I blew a kiss to the twins. They smiled.
Blake blew them a kiss too, then we were practically booted out the door by Gina. For a woman, she was sure strong.
“Have fun!” Gina said, before shutting the door behind us.
I glanced at Blake, who was grinning at me. “Well, let’s go then. The sooner we eat dinner, the sooner I can eat you.”
Blake grinned, grabbed my hand, and practically dragged me down the walkway. “What are we waiting for?”
I laughed, and let him drag me. We were going to have fun, I knew. In more ways than one.
