“Heath you have to be reasonable,” said Pata, taking a drag of his cigarette and a sip of his whiskey. Heath folded his arms onto the bar and leaned forward with a sigh. He picked up his cold glass of beer and drank as Pata continued. The older man took his time as he tried to speak reason to the raven-haired bassist, “I know there’s a lot that has happened between the two of you, but you have to find some kind of middle ground here. It’s not just about you or just about Yoshiki. There’s the rest of the band to consider and there are a lot of fans depending on us all… Especially after 10 years when we’ve just put things back together. Think of what that will do to our fans.” The younger man stared down at his finger as he swirled around a droplet of water on the table in thought. “It’s just going to be the same shit all over again Pata. It’s Yoshiki, he never changes his ways.” “But you also knew that getting into what you got into with him. And whatever happens between the two of you, that isn’t the point. You have to think about this as a man, don’t be childish and let your emotions guide you like this.” Heath furrowed his brows and mumbled, “Yoshiki does that enough for all of us.” The drunk yet wise older man motioned the bow tied bartender over to refill his glass and then continued. “Ototo, I can’t make you do anything. But I do think you really should rethink this. There is a lot at stake here for such a rash decision.” The pale man huffed at his frustration and continued to drink his beer in silence. Pata had a lot of patience, but he had already warned Heath about this and he had not listened to him in the first place. Both men sat in silence, only listening to the clinking of glasses and the bar’s piano player’s mellow jazz tunes. Finally the younger man broke his silence. “Pata, you’ve known him from the beginning...Before he met me... When he started things with hide… From what you saw, is it possible… That I made him happy?” He looked over at the brown-haired guitarist and added, “Really and honestly happy? I know no one can ever make him as happy as hide did but… Do you think he really might honestly have been happy with me?” Pata took a deep thoughtful breath in hopes that it would invite any wisdom he could conjure. He knew it was a very fragile question that Heath had replied and he would not bullshit him on something like this, though of course understanding Yoshiki’s feelings were far from his area of wisdom. A nearby couple’s laughter and chatter bled into the brief pause as the pianist changed tunes. “I have only ever seen Yoshiki smile a certain way, wholeheartedly, in two situations. It’s probably the only thing I believe he cannot fake. One is when he is with his fans and playing his music. The other…” Heath looked back down at the dark marble bar uncertain whether or not if he wanted to know Pata’s reply. “The first time I met the other was when hide came into his life. He seemed to be the only one who could bring that out in Yoshiki.” Heath felt his heart sink. It was the truth he dreaded to hear. Living in the unfading shadow of hide. “When hide died, that smile faded. I honestly never thought I would see it again. And then came the reunion. He started smiling again…” The wise guitarist looked straight ahead and furrowed his eyebrows as he spoke carefully and continued his monologue. “I thought naturally it was because he was reunited with his fans. But then I realized there was something more behind the smile.” He swirled the whiskey in his glass and examined it. “It was like a little bit of hide had somehow returned to him… And then I realized: It was you.” Heath looked over at Pata in surprise and replayed the words in his mind to make sure he had heard him correctly. The old man took another drink from his glass as Heath’s heart had a sudden shift of emotion. The guitarist paused and added one more thought. “To be honest, that’s why it upset me when I discovered you’d started things again. I was afraid of Yoshiki’s self-destruction again if things didn’t work out.” Never had he heard Pata so willingly and profoundly discussed the topic of Yoshiki’s feelings, let alone anyone else’s business. Having realized early on that Pata was a quiet observer, Heath had always known that he knew much more than he cared to speak of. After a moment of reflection, the young bassist couldn’t help but ask, “Pata, you wouldn’t be saying this just to-“ With out looking at him, Pata interjected with a firm tone, “Don't insult me Heath. You know me far better than that.” Heath watched the older man as he drank. He knew what Pata had said were his honest feelings and beliefs. Pata seldom spoke on matters to influence someone’s decisions or meddle in their business and he knew that that was all he was going to get from him. He had spoken out of his comfort zone and that was obviously not a thing to be questioned further. After a moment Heath decided to bring the discussion toward a close. He stood up and put a wad of money on the bar. “I should go,” he said politely as he picked up his coat. “Thank you for your honesty Pata.” And with that, Heath left the older man to his whiskey.
