Disclaimer: I do not own nor know Johnny Depp. This story is a work of fiction, and I don't make any money. |
AN: We're not out of the woods yet! Ero, of course Vanessa would come back just then. It's the worst time, isn't it? Pluska, glad I caught you off guard! Wicked2200, thanks so much for reading! Keep in mind that this is NOT the last chapter, I think there are two more coming up. This one sort of sets up for the next one.
“Maman!” both of the children cried. They ran to the woman, wrapping themselves around her legs. She knelt down and embraced her children, holding them tightly to her.
“Oh, I missed you!” she said.
“I missed you too.” Lily-Rose nuzzled her.
“Where were you for song long, Maman? It was so hard without you.” Jack buried his face in her hair. Charity looked at Johnny, misery clearly etched on her face. Johnny only stood there, still holding the flowers.
“And my Johnny. Oh, Johnny.” Vanessa brushed by Charity and threw her arms around her husband.
“Life is so empty without you. Flowers! How could you have known? Tracey didn’t spoil the surprise, I hope?”
“No, I’m surprised all right.” Johnny murmured, feeling dazed as she took the flowers and smelled them. Charity shook her head and grabbed her purse.
“Vanessa, what are you doing here?”
“Should I not be with my husband and children?” she gave him a dazzling smile before seeing Charity. Her eyes narrowed.
“Who is she?”
“This is Charity, Maman. She’s looked after us while you were gone.” Jack abandoned his mother to go and hold her hand.
“Looked after you?” she turned to Johnny. “Were they really too much for you on your own?”
“Yes,” he said bluntly. “I never anticipated not having a partner around to help me raise my children.”
“Well, she’s just hired help. She can’t really care much about them.” Vanessa tossed her hair.
“I care quite a bit about your children.” Charity said quietly. Vanessa just stared. “They’re beautiful. I don’t see how you could ever have left them to begin with.”
“You are not a mother. You have no idea the stresses involved. But it does not matter now. I am here, and you will no longer be needed. Johnny, pay the girl.” Vanessa nodded to her husband.
“You know what? That’s really not necessary. I’ll be taking my leave now. Lily-Rose, Jack, will you come and kiss me good bye?” she knelt down, arms open. Both of the children looked at their mother.
“Go ahead. You won’t be seeing the girl again. Go and say thank you for looking after her.” Vanessa nodded.
“But Maman, why isn’t she coming back?” Jack asked. He ran to Charity and wrapped his arms around her neck.
“Because I’m here, darling. We don’t need her anymore.”
Lily-Rose wrapped herself around Charity as well. Charity held the kids close for a few minutes before kissing them each on the forehead. She stood up and tugged her shirt into place. Jack let out a sob.
“Don’t leave, Charity! Don’t leave forever. If Maman won’t pay you, I will. I’ve got seven dollars saved up in my piggy bank.” He grabbed her pant leg.
“Oh, Jacky. Honey, be good and do what your parents tell you.” She untangled his hands and headed out the door.
Johnny remained still throughout this whole exchange, unable to move. When the door shut behind the girl, he ran forward and snatched up his son. He held him tightly as he cried.
“Vanessa, you really shouldn’t have fired her.” He shook his head. “It’s going to take you some time to get back into the swing of things, and the children adored her.”
“Well, this is a fine home coming, isn’t it?” Vanessa sighed. “I thought you’d be happy to have me back.”
“I am, I am.” He shifted Jack’s weight in his arms. “It’s just that… Well, whoever asked you to come back, anyway?”
Vanessa looked like she had been slapped in the face. She threw the flowers at the wall and crossed her arms.
“You’re acting like you don’t even love me anymore.”
“I do, Vanessa. I just…” he stopped and sighed. “Come on, let’s just get the kids some lunch, okay?” he put down Jack.
“All right.” She seemed soothed.

I walked up the steps to my apartment, my feet and legs aching. Sarah Jane looked up from her laptop.
“You’re home early. You didn’t get sacked did you?” she sounded worried. I didn’t reply and her face dropped. “You did get fired! What are you going to do for money now? Why were you fired, anyway?”
“His wife came back.” I said dully.
“Well, why didn’t she like you? It’s not like you were fucking her husband.” I couldn’t bring myself to say anything. Of course, Johnny and I hadn’t been sleeping together.
But maybe what we were doing was worse. At least when you fucked someone, you could say that you didn’t love them. It was just sex. But when you really felt for someone, you couldn’t lie. Feelings were the ultimate truth.
“Oh my God.” Sarah Jane gasped. “Charity, did you sleep with the husband?”
“No. I didn’t. Not really.” I stood up from the couch. “I don’t really want to talk about it, Sarah Jane. I’ll find another job tomorrow, I promise. I think I’m just going to go on to bed.”
“But it’s so early.”
“I know.” I slumped up the stairs. I fell onto my bed and pulled a pillow over my head. Maybe I could just forget the rest of the world existed. Maybe I could just pretend that I never met Johnny Depp.
Besides, music was what I really wanted to do with my life. I didn’t want to be a nanny, or a dog walker, or even someone’s wife. My heart belonged to music, and that was where I needed to be.
I still ached at the thought of leaving Lily-Rose and Jack, though. I knew that now that Vanessa was back, and things would probably be different. But I knew women like her. She had left one, and she was going to do it again.
I hadn’t wanted to leave Johnny, either. I was still blown away by the fact that he had bought me flowers to apologize. Of course, he hadn’t told his wife to beat it, hadn’t told her that he didn’t love her anymore.
But could I really expect that of him?
