BRIAN.
This wasn’t going well. Stef was standing in his room when he SHOULD be in hospital and Courtney had just stormed off to kill, maim or otherwise destroy his boyfriend, who until that moment, Brian had thought was a wonderful person. Lost in his day dreams, he almost didn’t hear Stef talking to him.
“Brian.. .Brian!” the blonde yelled, snapping Brian out of it.
“What? Look, I should go after him… to make sure he doesn’t do anything… you know, bad.”
“I’m coming.”
“No, you’re not. You are staying here and then we’ll take you back to hospital where you belong!” the shorter boy told him firmly.
“Fine, take me back, but I want to come now.”
Throwing his arms up in defeat, Brian grabbed his coat and headed for the door.
“Brian?” Stef asked quietly.
“What?! We have to go!”
“I’m sorry, but I have to ask. You know, I come over at one in the afternoon and you and Courtney are in here, hung-over and… half naked…”
Brian rolled his eyes. “Stef, yes we had a bit to drink last night. I, however, always sleep in my underwear and your lover boy didn’t have much choice, did he? Now, don’t you have enough to worry about?”
***
Oh shit, Courtney’s car was gone. Last thing that boy needed now was to be driving. Brian noticed his dad’s car wasn’t in the garage, but his mother’s still was. Was it really worth the risk?
Stef was clutching his stomach and groaning, Courtney could almost be at Michael’s by now. Yes, it was worth it.
Brian had learned to drive in his mum’s old station wagon, but having had so few chances to actually drive since; he wasn’t feeling good about it. At least it worked.
It wasn’t a long drive, and Brian managed to double park right outside Michael’s building. Directly behind Courtney’s Holden. Shit.
Flicking a switch, the black haired boy jumped out of the car and locked it, leaving Stef to struggle with his door. “Oi, I can’t get out! Di… did you put the child locks on!?”
Brian couldn’t help but smile at his genius. “Stay out of trouble!” he warned and ran off, hearing the blonde’s muffled swearing behind the glass.
***
He raced up the stairs, hoping, praying nothing had happened yet. He didn’t have a plan, but Brian couldn’t let anyone else get hurt. He was sure this was all somehow his fault. Thankfully, standing outside number 6 was Courtney, his red hair covering most of his face as he leaned against the wall, his eyes dark and full of hatred.
“C.. Courtney?” Brian hissed. He didn’t want Michael to hear them, if he was home.
“I don’t know what to do.” Courtney muttered. “I want to…. I don’t know. I want to hurt him. Look what he’s already done. He doesn’t deserve happiness, or forgiveness.”
“Look, we don’t even know what really happened…” Brian thought aloud.
Courtney turned to face him, shocked. “Are you saying you don’t believe Stef?!”
“Shh! No, I’m not saying that. I just… nothing good can come of us being here!”
“No, not going now. You need to know what kind of person he is. He has to pay for what he’s done to Stefan.”
“What are you-!?”
Brian was interrupted by Courtney pounding his fist on the door. His eyes widened, this wasn’t going well.
Nobody answered the door. Courtney hit it again. Nothing. “Oh fuck this!” he hissed, and kicked out hard, pushing the door almost off its hinges.
“What the hell!?” called a voice from another room. Brian recognized it immediately. “What the… Courtney? Is that… what the fuck are you doing here?!” Michael yelled, now in full view. Brian was hiding behind the taller boy, hoping to stay out of this for as long as possible.
“You bastard!” the red head yelled, forcing his way inside. “You masochistic, self-centred, selfish, egocentric, insensitive, FUCKED UP BASTARD!”
Michael smile and shrugged. “Lots of big words in there, Courtney. Still consider yourself a bit of a genius do you?”he tilted his head, looking to the door. “Hey Brian, what’s up, baby?”
“Tell him he’s wrong!” Brian yelled.
“Wrong about what? Have you talked to this guy much? He’s pretty smart, chances are he is right.” Michael walked over to his kitchen bench, lighting a cigarette.
Brian was baffled, how could he be so calm?! “Tell him you didn’t hurt Stef!”
“Ooh that,” Michael blew smoke over his head and laughed. “no, that was me.”
There was an awkward silence that Brian felt went forever. He felt sick. “Y… you did all those horrible things to him! You beat him and cut him and RAPED him!? Wh-“ Suddenly something occurred to him. Stef had been hurt yesterday… last night Brian had been at… “Y… you hurt him, and then you invited ME over!?” Brian was fuming. He was no longer worried about Courtney, but more so about what he might do himself. “Why!?”
“Why not? I got what I wanted.”
“B-b…” Brian was rarely lost for words. He couldn’t believe what was happening. “But I thought you were different! I thought you really liked me?”
“Oh, believe me Brian,” Michael smiled, walking back towards the two boys. “I like you a loooooot.”
“Then don’t hurt my friends! Y… you, I don’t even know what you are!”
“Why did you guys come here?” the blonde asked, looking more annoyed than anything else. “I’m very busy and all you’ve done is yell.”
It was a good point. What were they doing there? Brian looked over to Courtney, who looked as though he was about to snap. “Courtney? We, we should probably go…”
“Lovely having you guys over, let’s do it again sometime.” Michael smirked, leaning on the door.
Courtney bolted, punching the blonde square in the jaw.
“No! Courtney, stop!” Brian knew it was pointless trying to hold the much larger boy back. The red head was all over Michael, their arms flailing so that Brian couldn’t tell what was going on. “Stop it!” he cried.
Courtney fell onto his back, picking up his glasses, blood trickling from between his teeth. “D…don’t… hurt St…tef again!” he spat, wiping his mouth and getting up.
As they turned to go, Brian noticed Michael was no longer looking smug, but rather gritting his teeth and clutching his jaw. “Fuck off.”
The door slammed. Brian felt hollow. What had they achieved? A lot of yelling, Courtney could have lost a tooth, and he felt like shit. “A… are you ok?” he asked nervously.
“Someone has to do something about him. He can’t keep hurting people.”
“Look… Courtney don’t you think you’re a bit too.. involved?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” the red head rounded on him.
Brian didn’t want to upset him more, but something was bothering him. “I know Michael is a bad person… now. Believe me, I feel like an idiot. But, you’ve known Stef what, four days? If that? It just seems a bit strange that you’re so invested.”
“It’s not just that. Back in the day, Michael hurt me and I know how shit I felt.
Now he’s hurt Stef, but in a different way… plus he’s hurt you. I just don’t like nice guys getting messed up with jerks like him. Plus Stefan is… special.”
Brian smiled. “He’s lucky to have you.”
“No, he’s lucky to have YOU. I won’t be around much longer.”
“Why not?”
“There’s something I have to do, but… it means… going away.” Courtney said sadly, not making eye contact.
“Oh. A work thing?”
“Partially, but it means I’ll be gone and… he’s going to think it’s his fault… and…” tears were running down his face. “I don’t know when I’ll be back. It’s unfortunate this is happening now of all times, when things are so new but on the other hand… it means I can escape for a while.”
Brian was confused. Was this code? “I don’t follow.”
“I got a grant to work in Los Angeles for a while. Probably only four or five months, but I’d be stupid not to go. It’s… it was confirmed last night. Stefan is going to think I’m going because of him but…”
“I understand.” the black haired boy smiled. “Hey, unless he’s broken the child lock, he’s in the car.”
***
Downstairs, sure enough, Stef was still locked in the car looking none too impressed. Upon seeing the pair, however, he jumped up. “What happened!?” he asked, muffled behind the window. Brian let him out. “Courtney is going to take you back to the hospital, where you belong! I’m coming too but… go with him.” He smiled.
STEFAN.
It had felt like forever since Brian had left him in that freezing cold car. His middle hurt, the drugs the hospital had given him for the pain had well and truly worn off.
“What happened?” the blonde repeated, doing up his seatbelt in Courtney’s car.
“Nothing much…”
“You have blood on your lips.”
“That’s not important now. Look, Stef, I’m going away.” Courtney told him, looking down at the floor.
“A… away? Oh God, what did I do!?”
The red head smiled. “I knew you’d say that. You didn’t do anything, it’s a work thing… mostly. I’ll probably be gone a few months…”
“Since when!? So you’re breaking up with me?” Stef was hysterical. This was the last thing he’d expected.
“Since yesterday and… I didn’t know we were actually together!”
His heart sank. “Oh… no, that’s ok..”
Courtney started up the car. “No I mean… that’s something I’d like. Would have liked… I mean. Look, if I wasn’t leaving, I’d jump at the chance.”
“But you’re the one I want.” Stefan said sadly, looking out the window.
“I… how can you know that? It’s hardly been-“
“It doesn’t matter. I know.” He said firmly. Why were they even talking about this? “A few months is… nothing!”
“Stef, you’re suggesting turning a four day relationship into a long distance one for… hell I don’t even know how long!” Courtney’s driving was becoming more erratic as the conversation went on.
“I know, I know I just…”
“How about this,” Courtney smiled. “we can be together while I’m away, if you want, but I won’t ask you about anything that happens in my absence.”
“I don’t know what-“
“Stef! Do I have to spell it out for you?” the red head laughed. “I would love to be with you when I get back, but I’m not going to ask you just… sit around and wait for me! You can do whoever, whatever, whenever, anything you want while I’m away… and I’ll never ask you about it. You never have to apologise, feel guilty or tell me.”
“Oh,” Stefan sighed softly. He didn’t know how to feel about that. Did it mean that Courtney wasn’t really interested, or was he just very generous?
The car stopped, and the blonde noticed they were back at the hospital.
“Think about it.”
***
Stef lay back in his hospital bed, the one he'd escaped from not too long ago. Courtney had left, promising to return before flying out. If he could. Brian was sitting by his side, dozing quietly, looking perfect as usual. The blonde still didn't know what had gone on while he'd been trapped in the car, but he was damn well going to find out.
Turning over, he noticed a small piece of paper in his jeans pocket. Scrawled in hardly legible writing were the words; “Transire suum pectus mundoque potiri”. Stefan smiled; “To overcome one's human limitations and become master of the universe”. That was such a Courtney thing to say.
Slowly falling asleep, Stef left the TV on. The news was playing softly in the background, something about a fire, an apartment building, a drug lab. No suspects, no witnesses, nobody killed. The building, however, had been destroyed.
Still clutching Courtney’s parting words, Stefan fell asleep.

A/N: This kinda concludes Part 1. Like, if it were a movie, this would be when you'd have intermission. I had another idea but comments sort of convinced me to change it =p Hopefully for the better.
Part 2 will most likely be less angsty lol. Less drama more smut (yes, that's my tagline for Part 2).
