80 years later
Kaoru shivered and shrank with cold. It was a particularly dark summer night, but it was not that cold. Still, Kaoru couldn’t take the cold that took over his body. It was as if he froze to the spot. He could just stare at the view in front of him, not wanting to believe it to be true.
Suddenly he felt somebody approaching. Somebody not human. Kaoru kept still and waited. The gentle breeze brought to him the strange scent of the person, only confirming to Kaoru that he didn’t know the man that was approaching.
Soon the dark silhouette emerged out of the shadows and without hesitation was heading straight to where Kaoru was standing. When he was finally close enough for the light of the streetlamps to shine on his face, Kaoru took a closer look at the man’s face. He looked very young, had quite a round face and a funny haircut with blond hair. He wore a simple black jacket and jeans.
The man stopped a few meters away from Kaoru and looked him in the face intensely.
“Would you happen to be Kaoru?” the man asked and Kaoru nodded.
“And you?” Kaoru asked, trying not to show that his voice was shaking. He wanted to be left alone at this moment, but there was nothing he could do.
“How did you find us?” the man asked, not answering directly to Kaoru’s question. But it was clear now that he was the one with whom Kyo ran away from Kyoto. He was the one that took Kyo away from Kaoru.
“I found out about what happened and where Kyo was going quite quickly. Just in four nights. And I also knew he didn’t go alone.”
“Kyo told me all about you. Or, to be more exact, about what happened since the day when he was kidnapped by Kisaki. So I would like to know how did you manage to run away from him and come here, to England? From what Kyo told me, I imagine you either do not care about your family anymore and ran away, or you made some kind of deal with him.”
Kaoru stared at the man in front of him for some time, clearly not wanting to answer. He felt so tired and so jaded that he just wanted him to disappear and leave Kaoru alone.
“You look like you have no will to go on anymore…” Yukke said, still starring at Kaoru. He sighted and added “I have lost my will to go on living a few years ago…”
“So what’s keeping you here?” Kaoru barked, his voice dry and hollow.
“I was waiting for you.”
Kaoru looked at the man puzzled and a tiny spark of curiosity appeared in his eyes.
“But I would like you to answer my question first.”
Kaoru sighted again and looked at the ground.
“I made a deal with Kisaki.”
“What kind of a deal?”
“It’s really not your business” Kaoru shot back, feeling very irritated and very, very tired. He didn’t want this man to know anything more. But the man kept quite and just watched Kaoru from afar. He also looked as if he just merely existed, not enjoying his life. As if everything that was good in his life has already vanished, leaving the empty shell to exist on its own.
Kaoru understood that he had to answer the question or otherwise the man wouldn’t tell him anything.
“Kisaki let me go and take as much time as I need. But when I’ll get back, I’ll have to let him fuck me as much as he wants for as many years as I’ll spend the days for traveling until I get back.”
Kaoru sighted and added silently “It have already taken seven days for me to get here… that means seven years of slavery to Kisaki so far…”
“Are you planning on coming back to him then?”
“Of course… If I won’t come back, he’ll easily find me on his own. And if he won’t wish to look for me, he’ll punish Toshiya and Shinya instead… by taking away their lovers and making Shinya and Toshiya his bitches instead of me… So there really is no choice for me but to just go back…”
Yukke was silent for some time, still looking intensely at Kaoru’s face.
“You loved him so much…” he whispered and felt how Kaoru’s whole body shivered at hearing this.
“I still love him…”
Yukke sighted and finally stepped closer to Kaoru. He was now standing just a few steps away. His expression softened and he looked at Kaoru almost with a gentle concern on his face.
“Was he happy?” Kaoru asked and his voice cracked. He looked pleadingly at Yukke, wishing for him to finally stop questioning him and tell him what Kaoru wanted to know. Yukke slowly, a bit hesitantly nodded.
“I think he was… To some extent… We stayed in London when we just arrived. Rented a flat in the suburb. For the first few weeks we just kind of were hiding, because Kyo was worrying that… that somebody might come after him… But nights and days went by and nobody came. So we relaxed and tried to make ourselves comfortable.
For the first two years we merely just studied English. Kyo couldn’t just go and study in university knowing only Japanese. He was so bad at English that even after many years of living here he didn’t manage to learn it well and to get rid of the horrible accent he had. But finally we were satisfied enough and Kyo was finally able to start studying as he wanted all along.
It was very hard for him because of the language, but he managed somehow. He even made some friends, though he barely spent any time with them outside university. Partly because he didn’t trust people easily, partly because he was afraid they would find out that he was not a man anymore, as he always said. I never liked this term, but Kyo never listened… He mostly stuck with me on his free time. I started working similar job as I used to do in Japan and slowly our financial status got better.
Kyo finished his studies and we moved to a house in the more abandoned area without neighbors. He found a job in the university similar to a secretary or something like that, but after some time started teaching himself. He was one of those professors who were hated by their students. Kyo was unsocial, hard to talk to, very cold and uncaring to the people he didn’t know. But he was always fair when it came to writing marks and he was a very good specialist in what he taught. So he somehow managed to keep his job. Though as I happened to see him work in university, since then I always was worried that one day they’ll just fire him. Kyo was like the devil himself. The worst professor the student can imagine. They were terrified of him.
He worked in the university all the time. He started writing poems again after some time… He got interested in music a lot. Bought many cd’s of the Japanese bands. We sometimes went on trips together. Sometimes just stayed at home. This is pretty much it… We lived a simple, ordinary life.”
Yukke fell silent and Kaoru crossed his hands on his chest, as if trying to distance himself from the man before him.
“Did Kyo love you?”
Yukke for the first time looked away and nodded reluctantly.
“He did. I think he really did…”
“Did you… did you two fuck?”
Yukke glared at Kaoru angrily.
“Is this all you care about?”
“I care about it because I hate the thought of somebody else touching him! Kyo was mine! Just MINE!”
“We were in love. Of course we made love!” Yukke fell silent and all the anger was washed away from his face immediately. “Though I cannot call it making love. It was always one-sided. Kyo always pleasured me… but there was nothing I could do for him… only caress him as gently as I could and shower him with kisses…”
Even if Kaoru started to hate this man before him more and more with each passing second, he felt sorry for him at the moment. He wanted to make Kyo happy, but failed and it was eating at him pretty hard.
“I wanted to make him happy, but he always bore this sadness with him every day. What happened in Kyoto marked him for the rest of his life… And even though I loved him so much and tried to make him happy, he never was completely here and completely content with what he had…”
“If you loved him… if you really loved him… then… WHY DID YOU LET HIM GO?!” Kaoru couldn’t take it any more and screamed his disappointment and his sadness out, starring at Yukke with mad eyes.
“What did you expect?” Yukke shot back, also getting angry. “Did you expect to come here and find him young and happy to see you? Did you expect for him to jump from joy and run into your embrace?”
Kaoru grit his teeth, keeping silent. This was in a way what he expected. What he naively hoped for.
“Did you really think Kyo would ever want to become one of us after all that happened to him? After all that happened to him because of our kind? I never dared to ask him that… I wanted Kyo to be young and beautiful and alive with me forever… But whenever I gathered my courage to ask him that and looked into his eyes… I just couldn’t… Kyo always looked with a tiny hint of melancholy and sadness in his eyes… I couldn’t make him suffer by living with these feelings forever…
And Kyo never himself asked for that from me. He didn’t want to become the same as us… to be like the ones who tortured and hurt him…”
Kaoru felt silent tears roll down his cheeks, but he didn’t care. He just wanted to hear the whole truth. He wanted to know how Kyo lived when he wasn’t near him.
“When he got older and older, he was getting sadder and sadder every day. I guess part of it was my fault. I stayed the same: young and powerful, while his body got soft, weak and ugly from age. He wanted to push me away, tried as hard as he could, but when he understood that his attempts were in vain, he gave up and let me take care of him. By spending most of his time with me during the night, his eyes got weaker and his eyesight got really bad when he got old. And he was almost deaf with his left ear due to an accident when he was still a student. But I never cared about any of these things… I took care of Kyo and prayed for him to live just a bit more… every day I prayed for him to live just a bit more…”
“But finally he faded away…” Kaoru whispered, his voice heavy with sadness.
They stood silent for a while. Kaoru turned around and looked at a lonely grave just a couple of steps away from him. Kyo was here. He was right beside him again.
Yukke stepped closer and stood beside Kaoru now, also looking at Kyo’s grave.
“Kyo warned me that if I stayed living here, not leaving his grave, you might show up. I said to him that I would wait for you, because Kyo wanted you to have two things.”
Kaoru turned to look at Yukke surprised and suddenly very excited and nervous.
“Here” Yukke extended a hand with a small paper in it. “This is the address of the house we lived in. Go there. On the first floor, on the left there’s s study room with a magnificent view to the forest and the lake in the distance. It was Kyo’s working room. Open the first drawer of the table by the window. There you’ll find a packet waiting for you. Kyo made it and sealed it when he was fifty-five years old. He always kept it in the same place as not to lose it. It’s now finally yours.”
Kaoru could barely keep himself form trembling from anticipation and excitement. Kyo didn’t completely forget him! He even left something for Kaoru!
“You can also take anything else from the house you want. There are some Kyo’s pictures in his study and in our bedroom…”
“Aren’t you coming with me?” Kaoru asked and Yukke shook his head.
“I think I’ll wait for the sunrise together with Kyo… It’s been so long already… I never wanted to merely exist without Kyo… But it’s over now” Yukke smiled and looked at the grave.
“But…” Kaoru wanted to say something, but couldn’t find the words. Yukke sighted and sat down at the grave, gently caressing the side of the tombstone, where Kyo’s name was carved.
“My ashes will fall on the ground that hides Kyo’s coffin and will be sucked in to the ground together with the rain. That’s all I want – to lie together with Kyo. I never wanted to become a vampire and to suffer through the eternity being alone. Or worse, being forced to submit myself to somebody’s power… So this is the perfect solution. If I would have been sure that you’ll find what Kyo left you yourself, I would have done this sooner. But I had to make sure you got what Kyo left you. He wanted that. So now I finally am at peace…”
Yukke looked up at Kaoru and smiled a bit.
“I am so tired… I feel as if it’s been a very long and very tiring day after which I didn’t get rest even at night… And now, finally, I can close my eyes…”
Kaoru nodded weakly and stepped back. He looked at the grave for the last time and turned to leave. Yukke just sat looking at the grave and not moving. Kaoru disappeared in the night, leaving them both alone.
***
The packet was big and Kaoru’s hands trembled while he tried to open it without tearing. When he finally did, he found several notebooks and many sheets full of poems. Kaoru gently looked over all of them, trying to keep the tears from coming out again. But when he saw one more thing hidden between these sheets, he didn’t manage to hold the tears in anymore. It was a letter addressed to him.
Kaoru carefully unfolded it and started reading.
Kaoru,
If you are reading this, then I guess I am already dead. As you know already, I didn’t want to choose the life of the dark creature, of the one like you, so it was just natural for me to get old and die. So please don’t be affected too much by my death.
I am writing this to you because I want to apologize. I am sorry that I left without saying goodbye. Now when I look back at that time, I understand how cruel and selfish I was. You deserved at least a decent goodbye, but all you got from me was a simple ‘take care, Kaoru’.
I was scared and hurt and I just wanted to flee as far as I could. I know it is not much of an excuse, but it was how I felt at that time. And I knew you would have tried to stop me. So I chose not to tell you. I’m sorry if my decision hurt you. You said you loved me and I believe it was true. That’s why it still makes me sad to think of what I did.
I did have some feelings towards you, Kaoru. It was not love, I’m sorry to say this, but it wasn’t… But I was fond of you, at some point I even felt very content in your company, you always cared about my feeling and were never cruel to me. I appreciate that. And it was never your fault that Kisaki hurt me… I know it wasn’t…
I heard our songs… I listen to them all the time. They are beautiful. Thank you for them, Kaoru. And thank you for making my dream come true…
I am leaving you all my poems that I wrote up until this point. Do with them whatever you please. Use them for your songs or burn them. It makes no difference for me now. I am not going to write more, so this is all I ever wrote. And I’m leaving it all for you.
I whish you were happier, Kaoru. I had a good life with Yukke. He helped me to get rid of the hate and the wish of revenge. He helped me to feel happy and I whish there was somebody to make you happy as well…
I hope that you already are happy, Kaoru. I sincerely keep no grudge towards you anymore…
So thank you for trying to make me happy.
Take care…
Kyo
Kaoru’s vision clouded and he finally let the tears and the sobs escape his mouth. It took his awhile to calm down and to close the curtains as the morning was approaching.
He reread the letter so many times that he almost knew it by heart.
Kaoru put everything safely in his little bag he had and walked all around the house. He took all the photos that had Kyo in it he could find. He also took Kyo’s ring that he used to wear even back then when he was still in Kyoto. He left all the rest.
Kaoru re-rented Kyo’s flat when he understood that Kyo was gone. There were almost entire Kyo’s belongings left. Even his sheets. But the scent of Kyo faded away too quickly leaving Kaoru only with Kyo’s belongings to remind him of the times when they were together. Spending time in the flat where he used to be with Kyo didn’t help to forget him, but helped him to lessen the feeling of immense longing that he felt.
Kaoru took in a deep breath and closed his eyes.
He had to try to sleep throughout the day and then go back to Kyoto. He didn’t take his mobile phone and he was sure that Toshiya, Shinya and Die were sick worried about him by now.
And he didn’t want to spend more time that was necessary. He did all he wanted here and now it was time to go back. Many years of sharing his bed with Kisaki awaited him now and Kaoru couldn’t bare even thinking about it.
I’ll worry when I’ll have to face him… Now… now I just want to sleep in the bed where Kyo slept… where he shared his nights with the man he truly loved…
Kaoru climbed upstairs and shut the blinds and the curtains. The window was extremely small, so there was no chance of the sun getting in. Kaoru lied down and put the bag with Kyo’s parcel next to him. It was now the biggest treasure he had. He will pay a high price for it. But it was worth it. Even if it was all that was left of Kyo…
Kaoru closed his eyes and relaxed. Before falling asleep he whished he would never wake up anymore. But just before he fell into a sleepless dream, he could already see Kisaki’s satisfied smirk on his face and he knew that Kisaki was already waiting for him to come back.
And Kaoru knew that from now on he would never be the same again. Not anymore.
At least he still had Toshiya, Shinya and Die by his side. He had to remain strong for them. If not for himself, then at least for them.
Kaoru hugged the bag with Kyo’s poems and letter in it and finally fell asleep for the first time in seven days.
THE END
So this is the last chapter. Hope you enjoyed the story ^^ I just want to say a few more things :)
As I started writing the story, I didn't have a clear idea of how the ending should look like. So I just went with the flow and let the story develop itself. And while I was writing it, Kisaki became an extremely powerful and cruel character, and in the end I found myself unable to provide a happy ending for my fave pairing (which is K&K). I really wanted to make this story as reasonable as possible. I hate illogical and happy-sappy endings, so I wanted to have a reasonable one here (even if it's AU story).
With the way the events developed, in the end I couldn't find any way for Kyo and Kaoru to remain together. Fate was just not in their favor I guess... Kyo needed more time to really develop feelings for Kaoru, but time was exactly what they didn't have. And after one point where Kyo started getting feelings for Kaoru, others came and ruined it all. And from then on, all went downhill for both of them. And since then it became impossible to live happily ever after for Kaoru and Kyo.
I hope all of it makes sense to you :P LOL
I actually have the rest of the story in my head, as it is hard for me to stop here and not to wonder what would happen to the ones still living. Considering the fact that Kisaki is a total heartless bastard, I think you can imagine that life would not treat Kaoru nicely. Poor Kao...
I really could say a lot about this story, but it would takes pages I guess :P I have my reasons for everything that happened in the story, I just hope you can also see those reasons and understand why things ended the way they did.
Oh, and thank you Leppgirl & Kimane for always trying to leave a comment! ^^ *hugs*
And lastly - comments are always more than welcome! ^^
