Everlasting Love(Pt17)
Joe lounged comfortably on the chair in the gazebo, watching Phil teach Amber the finer points of flying. They were giggling and making wise cracks to each other. Joe laughed at them a few times, which startled him. He hadn’t laughed since he woke up and learned about Sav and Amber.
Amber was doing quite well learning how to be a vampire, when in the past she would listen and watch, just like Phil did. Joe would be out there showing her all of these things, but the worry over Sav kept him close to the house. He didn’t want to be to far away incase Sav woke and needed him.
“I would have done it myself, you know…” Joe started, sensing Nick close behind him. “…had I known she was going to die?” Joe looked out to where Amber and Phil where, floating in the air. “What made him do it Nick? I mean, I’m glad he did, but…did he know that Amber’s blood would make him sick or whatever you want to call it?”
“I’ve been thinking about that too. When he took her blood, Sav could taste you in her, maybe that’s why he couldn’t stop. Each one of us has a unique taste.”
Joe was nodding his head in agreement. “Every time we share a blood kiss, yours is there, in Sav’s blood.”
“With his state of mind, and the fact that you shut him out of your life and with the first taste of Amber’s blood, you were there. Someone he desperately needed.”
“He didn’t have to rape her though.”
”I agree with you there.”
Joe chuckled. “We don’t do that much.” Taking a deep breath he continued. ”I like to think that maybe, in the back of his mind, Sav knew what he was doing. He may have thought he was doing the right thing by bringing her across. There for saving her from a painful mortals death.”
“Possibly, but for both of you. As much as Sav wanted to save her from that death, he wanted to save you the pain of losing her also. There is a logical explanation why he brought her over.”
Joe raised his head and looked at him. “Then explain it to me.”
“Love.” Nick replied simply.
Joe sipped his drink, thinking about what he said. He knew that they both loved him. Sav would die for him, he told him so. Joe’s stomach knotted at the thought that ran through his mind. ‘Sav may have done just that.’
“So he didn’t know that her blood would make him sick or possibly kill him?”
“I didn’t even know that AIDS tainted blood would do that.” Nick informed him.
“You didn’t, but I thought you knew everything?”
”Not this apparently.”
Silence filled the air between them. Amber and Phil’s laughter floated on the gentle night breeze. Joe smiled a bit at them having fun under the circumstances. Fun…which at this time he could not embrace.
“Do you really think he knew what he was doing?” Joe finally asked.
“I’m not positive about that, it’s just a guess that he didn’t.”
Joe looked at him with surprise. “You guessing? What happened to the over confident Nicholas de Brabant?”
Nick shrugged. “Maybe this sickness with Sav proved to me that I’m not as confident as I once was.”
“Excuse me!” Joe exclaimed. “Sounds like your giving up on Sav of ever recovering.”
Nick stared straight ahead, not wanting to meet Joe’s steady glare. “He’s not keeping down any of our blood that I force in his stomach through the tube, not even yours.” Nick looked at him then. “I thought for sure yours would.”
“Then keep trying Nick. Go out and find some that will. I’ll kill mortals to find the right one.”
“You would kill innocent human’s to save his?”
”Goddamn right I will!” Joe yelled shooting up from his chair. “I can’t believe you would willing let him die.”
“He fades more each day Joe. The poison in his body is too strong to fight and I don’t know what else to do.”
Joe came at him, snatching Nick from the chair. “Rebecca promised me in a dream that he would be alright.”
”That was just a dream Joseph, you cannot possibly believe…”
”I do.” Joe said between clenched teeth, then much softer. “You cannot let him die Nick, please, I need you to help me get him well. I don't want to believe the last thing that Sav told me”
“I’ve done everything I know…”
“There has to be a way, Rebecca promised.” Joe said cutting him off.
Nick gazed into his pleading eyes, the tears that threatened to spill over, heard the tremor in his voice. Nick caved in. “Alright, I’ll keep try…”
Nick wasn’t prepared for Joe’s crushing embrace, his soft crying against his shoulder. The confidence that had been slipping for the past few weeks surged forward with a vengeance. Nick slowly wrapped his arms around Joe, softly stroking his back. He would start all over tomorrow to find a cure for Sav. He wasn’t doing it for himself, but for Joe, who rarely asked him for anything. ’Yes, I’ll do it for you Joseph. I don’t think I could handle losing both of you.’ Nick though and held him tighter.
Amber turned just as Joe collapsed in Nick’s arms. She flew toward the gazebo, Phil right behind him.
“What’s wrong?” Amber said quickly touching her father’s shoulder.
“It’s alright…he’s going to be alright now.”
“What the hell did you do Nick?” Phil asked glaring at him.
Joe released his hold on Nick, sniffling he steadied himself and turned toward Amber and Phil. “Um…” he swiped is hand across his cheek. “…he wanted to give up on Sav.”
”Why?” Amber glared at him.
“I’m not, Joe said he would kick my ass if I did.”
”Begged him is more like it.” Joe said softly.
Phil’s mouth dropped open. “That’s a twist.”
“Well…I have to admit to myself…” Nick looked at Joe’s tear stained face, he reached up and wiped away the ones that still fell. “…and to everyone, that I wouldn’t be able to handle losing both of them.”
Amber and Phil were speechless at his admission, and the gentleness he showed toward Joe. Amber looked at Phil.
“You know this closeness between them wont last.” Phil told her. “Once this is all over, they will be back at each others throats.”
Nick chuckled and looked at Joe. “I certainly hope so.”
“Yeah.” He nodded in return. “Wait…” Joe nearly jumped on Nick as an idea hit him. “…w..what about Kyle. Nobody…we haven’t called him. Shit, I’m so stupid…” Joe flew toward the house and straight to the phone. Nick was standing behind him when he turned around after punching in the number. “How could I forget to call him, let him know what was going on.”
”You’ve been to worried about Sav to think about him.”
“Damnit, I can’t believe I forgot about him.” Joe ran his hand through his hair waiting on some one to pick up the phone. The sleepy voice that finally answered made him realize what time it was where they lived.
“Beth, its Joe. I’m sorry for calling so late.”
“No it’s alright, hold on let me put Kyle on.”
”No, this concerns you to, your family too.”
”Ok, Kyle is right here, let me put you on speaker.”
Joe heard the click, then Beth telling Kyle who it was.
”Joe it’s late here.” ”I know, I’m sorry, but it’s an emergency.”
”Oh.” Kyle sat up in bed, fully awake. “What’s wrong?”
”You have to get here fast.” Joe turned to Nick as he spoke. “We’ll have the private jet pick both of you up and bring you here.”
“No, that won’t do, the jet is too far away, and it would take longer for them to get here.” Nick left the room and came back with a cell phone and phone book.
“Joe what’s wrong?” Kyle asked again.
“Sav is sick, very sick.”
”How can he be sick? He’s a vampire for pity sake!”
“I…I don’t think he knew it would make him sick. We’re not immune to everything.”
”How bad is he Joe?” Beth’s soothing voice came over the miles.
“He’s pretty bad a..and…fuck…” Joe dropped the phone.
Nick looked at him while he talked to the airlines, booking a flight for them. Amber quickly came over to him and took the phone, pushing Joe in the chair.
“Kyle, it’s Amber, he is, but he’s going to be ok.” Nick handed her a piece of paper. “Here’s the flight information. ”Leaving in 2 hours, #469, Evelyn will pick you up at the airport here.”
“Ok.” Beth replied jotting down the information. “We’ll see you soon.”
”Amber.” Kyle called out. “Take care of them.”
”We are, see you soon.” Amber hung up and turned to her father.
Before she could say anything Nick was pulling him to his feet to lead to him the room that was in, “You need to rest Joe.”
“I don’t want to rest. I just want this all to end, for Sav to be well. I want him back with me…us.” Joe rambled and lay on the bed.
“Do you want something to help you sleep?”
“No.” Joe rolled to his side and scooted close behind Sav. Nick pulled the thin sheet over him and took a seat across the room.
Joe let his mind search out the only place that he could feel Sav. He didn’t want to sleep, but the toll of the past weeks pulled him into a deep sleep.

Joe glanced up at the moonless starry night. Tightening his hold on the hand that he held in his. The blue eyes that met his, brought warmth to his cool skin. The love he saw in their depths was like no other.
They were in Rome on one of their yearly vacations together. Only this time Nick was with them, showing them the sites of the ancient city that lay around modern Rome.
The three of them were standing in the middle of the coliseum. Taking in the huge structure, imagining it filled with spectators, cheering and applauding to some ancient games that were no longer played.
Joe and Sav turned to Nick as he spoke of the tales that his ‘father’ told him about, when the city was alive, then it’s ultimate demise.
The floor of the coliseum, long since fallen in decay, leaving the maze of hallways and rooms bare to the elements. No one saw the figure, dipping in and out of the shadows below them in the catacomb of walkways. He silently waited for the moment when Joe and Sav looked away. Floating in the air, he came up behind Nick. Fast as lightening, he plunged the wooden stack in Nick’s back, the tip jutted out the front covered in blood.
Joe and Sav spun around at the same time, when they heard his loud gasp of pain. His stiff body was shoved aside, to land 20 feet below them.
The figure flew at Sav, they too fell to the floor in a separate room. Joe landed a few feet away and stopped dead in his tracks.
Marcus glared at him with deep amber eyes of hatred, the wooden stake he held against Sav’s chest dug into his flesh.
“You and Nick will burn in hell with me.” Marcus leered and thrust to point deep.
“NOOO!!” Joe screamed and rushed forward.
