You Can’t Control Destiny - Chapter 18
The next evening Hayden and Natalie made their way to the Stuyvesant Community Theater to see a production of “Death of a Salesman.” It was not a big theater and was far enough off Broadway that it attracted a different kind of audience. Natalie had attended plays there for years and Hayden had been to it a few times while studying acting in New York. It barely held 300 people and most plays presented there were by acting students whose teachers introduced them to the stage in varying degrees. The interpretations of characters by young students could be a breath of fresh air compared to the stale, mechanized movements older professionals sometimes fell into.
Before the lights went down, Hayden and Natalie sat in the audience reading the playbill and discussing their interpretations of the famous play. To onlookers they appeared to be friends involved in a deep, serious discussion. Some recognized Natalie, some Hayden and some both of them. Their body language conveyed their status as more than acquaintances, close friends familiar with one another over a period of time. Because of the casual atmosphere of the theater no one in the audience dressed to impress. While the curious sized up Hayden’s and Natalie’s appearances, not one could find a definite sign of a more intimate nature.
The lights dimmed. One of the reasons Natalie liked the theater was the lights. When they went down it grew so dark you almost couldn’t see the person next to you. Everyone in the audience sank into anonymity whether they liked it or not. However, it achieved an important outcome for the actors: the darkness forced the audiences attention on what happened onstage and not in the seats around them.
The darkness blanketed Hayden and Natalie buffering them from everyone else. As the first act opened Hayden’s fingers caught Natalie’s and laced with them. A positive squeeze answered his gesture. The play faded into the background, a tinny accompaniment that reminded Natalie of a TV left on in another room when no one was watching it. The words were no longer loud or audible, only a background cacophony that got tuned out in favor of a more tactile, active pastime.
Playing fingers. Every slide or brush against the skin skittered Hayden’s heartbeat and hitched the breath in Natalie’s throat. The excitement of playing a dangerous game in public held a deep fascination. His fingers stroked. Hers snaked around his. And no one saw. Hayden’s eyes remained on the stage his face encased in an interested mask, but inside his eyes dwelt elsewhere, his invisible smile sly as he caressed her palm in a covert operation.
Natalie refused to even try to halt the butterflies taking wing in her stomach. Those long fingers of his stroking and sliding against hers held her in thrall. She loved his hands. They could coax music from the piano or gesture a point fluidly. They knew how to find the right touch on her body. Even the way they curled around a hockey stick or a fork could race her heart. She mused to herself as she sat, the play completely abandoned of her attention. Somehow, some way his fingers made love to hers. She wasn’t sure how he could convey that idea or even if he knew he was planting that thought in her but her heart beat wildly in her throat as they continued to play. The whole scenario overwhelmed her as her body liquefied. She felt herself melting like ice on a hot sidewalk but managed to stay upright in her seat. Barely. Does he have any clue how sexy he is, she asked herself as a thumb drew a lazy circle in her palm.
Hayden frowned when Natalie’s fingers suddenly trembled. He wondered what caused it and if he was being a bother and distracting her. The play lost him before it even started. They could all be naked up there and I would never notice! He marveled. Things were far more interesting at his fingertips. Every time Natalie’s fingers glided along his electrical impulses set off tiny explosions up his arm raising the hair in a storm of static. It was incredible! Natalie didn’t have to be wrapped around him to drive his senses into overload. This little game left him so hard he ached. But he loved it. I’m a masochist, he ruefully condemned himself.
So locked on touching her he didn’t realize Natalie raised the hand still holding his. The suction of a warm, active tongue as one of his fingers slid into her mouth caught him off guard. He literally jumped in his seat, his other hand grabbing its armrest. Her mouth took his finger into the dark, moist cavern again, her tongue sucking harder. A red haze floated across his eyes, his body signaling its readiness to detonate. He yiped as quietly as he could and Natalie hastily pulled their hands down, his finger wet in the cool air. He felt rather than saw the person on the other side glance in the darkness in his direction and he drew in a deep, calming breath while his face burned. A soft snicker from Natalie narrowed his eyes. You’re going to pay for this, he promised silently.
By the time the play ended droplets of sweat had dewed on Hayden’s forehead as he tried with great effort to stay calm. Natalie was no better. Her heart thumped so hard in her chest she feared others could actually see it beating. When the lights came up they were sitting as they had been before the lights went out, hands in their own laps. First thing they did was excuse themselves to go to the restrooms.
Once inside Natalie hid herself in a stall grateful for the noise of the other patrons. They couldn’t hear her gasping in deep breaths as she tried to clear her head. At one of the sinks she ran cold water over the pulse points on her wrists still feeling warm in spite of the air conditioning.
Hayden went straight to a sink in the men’s room and splashed a few handfuls of water on his face. The teasing game in a public place and the chance of getting caught in spite of the fact that they really hadn’t been doing anything wrong excited him. The only thing on his mind now was getting her home and doing to her what he definitely couldn’t do to her in public.
Finally finding their way out to the street Hayden craned his neck searching for a taxi. Just as he raised his hand to catch one, Natalie slapped her hand across her mouth and grabbed Hayden’s arm before he could summon it. Quizzically, Hayden glanced down at her.
“We don’t need a taxi,” Natalie bit her lip, her eyes full of apology.
“Why?”
“Um, I forgot I have to stop in at a party.”
“What?”
“I promised to drop in tonight but you came and everything in my mind flew away. I’m sorry.”
A frustrated but indulgent growl rattled in Hayden’s throat. “Are you doing this just to make me nuts?” His blue eyes flashed.
Natalie giggled at his pained expression. “No. I just forgot.” She tugged at his arm pulling him down the street. “Come on we can walk from here. It’ll be fun and we’ll only stay for a little bit. That way I’ll have kept my promise.”
Hayden sighed in resignation. “Ok. Whose party is it?”
“Jake Gyllenhaal’s.”
Hayden’s eyes lit up, a wide smile revealing his straight, white teeth. “Really? I haven’t seen Jake in about a year! It’ll be great to see him. ‘Lead on, McDuff.’”
Natalie frowned playfully at his enthusiasm. “But we only stay for a bit.” Hayden just went on talking about some of the things he and Jake did while they were in London doing the play, “This Is Our Youth.”
The party was in full swing by the time they arrived at Jake’s. Jake answered the door his smile flashing when he saw Natalie. Somehow Jake had squeezed about 25 people into his apartment.
“Natalie!” He exclaimed grabbing her into a big hug. “I was wondering where you were! I figured you weren’t coming.”
Laughing, Natalie gestured over her shoulder with her thumb. “Well, I went to a play and completely forgot, so I made him come with me.”
Until that moment Jake hadn’t realized someone was with her. He looked over her shoulder, his eyes growhugehuge at the sight.
“Hayden!” Jake shouted, his voice rising in surprise. A smile split his face as he reached out and gleefully shook Hayden’s hand. “What are you doing in New York? C’mon in!”
Natalie raised a dry eyebrow as the two launched into stories of London and catching up with one another. Spotting Chelsea she waved. “I’m going over there to see Chelsea,” Natalie informed. When neither young man stopped to acknowledge her she shook her head and walked away.
An hour passed with Hayden and Natalie coming together at times and mingling around the noisy room at others. Hayden knew a few of the people so he was at ease and enjoying himself, even though his mind began to drift and his eyes glanced longingly at the door. Natalie, too, enjoyed the party but eventually her eyes drifted to her watch and an impatience niggled at her mind. Surrounded by people, she found she’d rather be alone with one. Maybe it was time to go.
Hayden relaxed against the arm of the couch involved in a conversation with Jake. At the sound of the door Jake’s head lifted. His girlfriend waved at him signaling that she was closer and would get it. He smiled his thanks and went back to his conversation. As his story wound to its hilarious conclusion Hayden laughed, his eyes casually searching the room for Natalie.
“Oh, great,” he muttered, every joint in his body locking in dismay.
Jake frowned at Hayden’s sudden shudder. “What is it?” His head swiveled, his eyes automatically landing on his newest visitor. He waved a greeting and turned back to Hayden, grinning wickedly. “Ah! I think somebody has the hots for you. Lucky dog. She’s eyeing you like you’re dinner.”
“Yea,” Hayden’s lips barely moved and he kept his eyes on Jake. “Listen, Jake, you gotta help me.”
Jake’s brows furrowed at Hayden’s obvious displeasure. “What’s the matter? You don’t want her? Why? It’s obvious she wants you and they don’t come much sexier.”
“There’s something you should know…”
Natalie’s voice trailed off as she spotted Anna Kournikova at the same time Anna’s eyes found Hayden. The blonde’s eyes lit up and she even had the gall to wet her lips before stalking her way through the crowd toward her prey.
Chelsea nudged Natalie. “You were saying?” When Natalie didn’t respond she followed Natalie’s line of sight. “Oh,” she nodded in understanding. “She has that effect on all us females, doesn’t she? Hmm. And she’s heading right towards Hayden. She sure must want to notch him on her bedpost or something. Looks like you’ll have to catch a taxi alone because…”
“Not for long,” Natalie hissed, shoving her glass into Chelsea’s hand. Surprised, Chelsea could only give an owlish blink. “Hold this. I’m putting a stop to her once and for all.”
“But…”
Natalie marched off heading towards the same destination as Anna.
“Hayden, how are you?” Anna purred, laying a hand on his sleeve. “I haven’t seen you for a few months.” Belatedly she remembered Jake standing there and smiled in his direction but her attention focused on Hayden, her mind filing through the ways to get him off in a corner somewhere and then out of the apartment. Her eyes inventoried his face and body and she smiled at him confident in her ability to finally get him.
Jake, who was totally ignored, shrugged helplessly at Hayden. Before he could say anything someone moved in front of him. A small hand threaded through Hayden’s hair as a pair of lips captured his. Stunned, Jake’s mouth fell open. So did Anna’s. Across the room Chelsea almost dropped the two glasses she held.
Hayden only saw a blur and felt a hand tug his hair but he knew whose lips took his prisoner. He knew they were in a crowded room and Natalie was letting everyone see he was hers. The desire to crow triumphantly hit him but she easily pried his mouth open and swept her tongue over his. Hayden surrendered without protest, one hand steady on her hips, his eyes closing to concentrate on her sweet kiss.
Hayden knew it really hadn’t been that long of a kiss because all too soon it was over and those beautiful brown eyes were sparkling into his. He couldn’t help it. He grinned. Natalie’s fingers still tangled in his hair as she turned her face to Anna.
“I hope I made myself perfectly clear.” The words hit Anna like an angry slap. Astonished, she found she could only manage a weak nod, her vocal chords paralyzed. Natalie turned back to Hayden her smile bursting sunshine in his soul. “Are you ready to go?”
“Anytime you are, baby,” Hayden smoothed a hand up and down her hip.
“Ok. Just let me tell Chelsea goodbye and I’ll be right back.”
When she strolled across the room to Chelsea Jake dumbly shook his head again still dazed. “You? And Natalie?” He questioned. “And how long has this been going on?”
Hayden pretended to think. “Oh, I’d say this started simmering the day we met 4 years ago.”
“What! She never even hinted!”
ll, ll, she didn’t really realize it until later,” Hayden confessed. “And she is a pretty private person.”
Jake snorted. “Not if that very public kiss is anything to go by!”
Hayden’s grin bordered on the smug side.
Natalie took her glass from Chelsea, who watched through narrowed eyes, and drained it. “Aren’t you the sly one,” Chelsea accused. “All this time I’ve been saying you should date him and you were and you didnay aay anything?” She rolled her eyes. “Good friends, you claimed. How long?”
“I think it sort of started when we first met. But it seriously started, oh, I’d say last summer…with a few months off due to my confusion.”
Chelsea’s eyes bulged, her mouth gaping like a dead fish. “You mean to tell me…during the shoot?”
“Mm. He’s pretty persuasive when you get to know him. And very sexy,” Natalie added as she set her glass down and hugged Chelsea. “Bye.”
“But…”
Natalie giggled and shook her head. “I don’t know who I’ve surprised more, you or Anna. Oh well, the secret’s out and the witch is dead. Long live the queen. See ya.”
Natalie hugged Jake and kissed his cheek. “Lovely party but we must be going.” Hayden wrapped his arms around her waist, rested his chin on the top of her head and grinned at Jake.
“Yes, well if that kiss was anything to go by you’d better go home and lock yourselves in or you might do something that will get you arrested!” Jake teased, walking with them to the door. “Are you sure about this?”
“Well, I took care of her, didn’t I?” Natalie said defiantly. Jake looked over at Anna whose back was resolutely turned towards them. “People would have found out sooner or later anyway. He won and he knows it.” Hayden raised his eyebrows and this time the grin was naughty. Jake laughed seeing something there that he’d missed earlier.
All the way home in the taxi Natalie kept catching Hayden looking at her. When she would meet his eyes he would smile and then look straight ahead. Now that the moment had passed she cringed inwardly. She bit her lip in apprehension. I don’t regret kissing him, she told herself, allowing a small smile tinge her lips. I don’t regret putting Anna Kournikova in her place, but I felt so possessive! Talk about staking a claim! And in a roomful of people, too! She groaned silently. Still, she reasoned, if not Anna it would be some other girl. So, I guess I did what I had to do. And besides, Hayden didn’t mind. At all!
Hayden’s eyes found hers again and he smiled. A shiver vibrated up Natalie’s spine at the glint lurking in the blue glance. Her stomach churned in anticipation as his fingers laced with hers, his thumb resting on her erratic pulse. A wariness prickled her awareness and tingled her scalp, waves of sensual expectations radiating from him. Her throat dried.
In the elevator he held her hand, minding his manners, a tiny smile pulling at the corner of his mouth. It dawned on her then that they hadn’t exchanged a single word since they’d gotten into the taxi in front of Jake’s apartment building. A deep, heavy beat throbbed between her legs, liquid heat obeying her body that pulled taut with sexual tension even though Hayden stood relaxed and peaceful. He was driving her crazy and he wasn’t even trying to! She closed her eyes and helplessly prayed.
Natalie congratulated herself as she managed to calmly unlock her apartment door on the first try with no shaking fingers to betray her. She opened the door and stepped in, Hayden trailing behind hers ths the door shut behind him she was yanked backwards. Strong hands lifted her in the air and pushed her hard against the door slamming the breath out of her. Hayden’s hips pinned her in place, his mouth crashing with need onto hers prying her lips apart, his tongue snaking into her warm, moist mouth.
Natalie fought for air but went up in flames like dry kindling hit by lightning. Her legs wrapped around his thighs as his hardness ground tantalizingly against the perfect spot. Her tongue tangled with his sliding and caressing hungrily. A quavering moan burst out of her when she tore her mouth from his to suck in much needed air. Denied her mouth his lips trailed along her neck his teeth lightly scraping the skin. While her lungs filled with oxygen her fingers wound into his hair, her head stretching harder against the door giving him greater access to the smooth flesh of her neck.
Straining against him Natalie felt her body’s urge hatthatter swiftly approach. His mouth found hers again his tongue mimicking the act they would dance together. Of its own accord her pelvis rocked against his despite her brain begging it to slow down. Faster and faster they moved and thrust against each other desperate moves for completion, choked begs to stop and slow down.
Hayden dragged his mouth away this time holding his body rigid. Panting heavily he dropped his face onto her shoulder, shaking with the control he exerted.
“Nat,” he begged somewhere between a pant and a groan, “I’m so hard I’m going to explode!” He struggled to lift his head, his blue eyes fierce and intent as they met hers. A darkness superimposed itself on his features and her body shot its arousal level impossibly higher. She could come right now, just from that hungry, evil look on his handsome face.
Topaz flecked brown eyes burned into his before she said, barely above a whisper. “I’m very wet,” she paused for a heartbeat, “for you.”
A tortured, animal growl ripped through Hayden and he collapsed to the floor, rolling her under him. Hands grappled at clothes and somehow he was bare from the waist up, but he’d managed to strip her of eveing, ing, her body exposed to his devouring eyes. The feel of skin on skin fueled the fire. Hands roamed roughly, filling themselves with her breasts, fingers rolling her nipples. Soft cries announced her pleasure then rose in intensity and volume when his tongue swirled over one, rubbing the nerve endings connected to the point between her legs. Her hips lifted in reflex the wetness she’d claimed was for him smearing across his stomach pushing him over the control limit. His lips suckled her breast rhythmically tormenting her to new heights of mindlessness.
Natalie’s hands tore at Hayden’s hair wildly until he had no choice but to obey or lose handfuls of it. Quickly, Natalie sat up, forcing Hayden to his knees, her fingers scrabbling at his button then the zipper. His jeans and boxers slid past his hips and over his buttocks as she lay back down taking him with her capturing his mouth with he
“
“Natalie,” he gasped when she pulled him into the cradle of her hips. “Let me get these off.”
“No!” Frantically, her hand circled his hard penis leaving him no option but to follow where she tugged.
“Nat,” he moaned once more, breathing hard and so out of his mind with desire he couldn’t say anything more.
“Please!” she begged in a whisper, eyes blazing up at him. “Now!”
“Shit!” The curse hissed his surrender.
Hayden plunged mindlessly into the hot, tight, slick depths of her his heart roaring in his ears. Natalie wailed a broken cry immediately convulsing around him as he plunged in again and again then exploded into her in an orgasm so hard everything blacked out for a moment and he saw stars. He shouted once triumphant in his final release before collapsing onto her wracked in convulsive shudders, a sheen of sweat on his forehead and back.
Natalie’s arms wrapped tightly around him her body shivering and breaking out in goosebumps. His chest heaved as they floated back together and they lay on the carpet too spent to move. A hand slid dreamily up his spine as Natalie lay under him her contentment almost tangible.
A chuckle vibrated against her neck where Hayden’s lips rested. “Natalie, you didn’t let me get my pants off.”
Weakly she lifted her head and caught sight of his clothing down around his thighs. Her head dropped back to the carpet and she giggled.
“I couldn’t wait. And I blacked out again.”
Sleepily Hayden grunted. “So did I. The French call it ‘the little death.’ It happens sometimes during an intense orgasm.”
“Well, you’ve made it happen to me a lot,” she yawned.
Hayden lifted his head a self-satisfied grin on his face. “Really?”
She nodded. “And I get a pain in my head sometimes.”
“Sexual headache.”
“How do you know that?”
He kissed the tip of her nose. “I read.”
“Oh.”
Hayden snuggled his face against her neck again and yawned. “I hope we weren’t too loud. We’re awfully close to the door.” He laughed. “If this is how turned on you’re going to get by sending a message to Anna Kournikova we’ll have to run into her more often.”
Natalie’s fingers tightened in his hair and pulled his head up. “Don’t even think it,” she warned through clenched teeth. “She knows now that you’re taken. Besides, you’ve been sexually teasing me all night.”
“Who sucked on my finger during the play?” He challenged arching a brow. Natalie blushed. “I didn’t hear or see a single thing through the whole play!”
“Neither did I,” she grinned sheepishly a yawn cracking her face. “Carry me to bed.”
Hayden choked a laugh. “I couldn’t carry a feather right now. However, I might be able to go cave man on you and drag you by your hair.” Natalie smiled stroking her fingers down his cheek basking in the warmth of him. Hayden’s face lowered, his nose rubbing hers, his lips sliding over her lips. Natalie’s heart skipped as his lips left hers slowly, reluctantly, the wet clinging sound bringing another rush of arousal flowing through her in spite of her exhausted body. Blue eyes gazed into her soul.
“I love you, Pretty Eyes,” he whispered, brushing fingers along her neck.
Natalie sighed and felt her heart skip again. “I love you, too…Jedi.”
