Chapter 17
Tears had started falling down my cheeks again when I knocked on the door. I waited a few moments before the door was opened. Brian was standing on the other side of the door. His face showed his disgust when he saw me, but then he noticed the tears and his features changed.
“ Brian…” I sobbed, “ I need to see Nick!”
He pulled himself together and looked at me with anger,
“ He’s busy!” he simply said.
“ No…” I said, “ Please, I just need to talk to him!”
“ I told you…he’s busy!” Brian said. Suddenly his features changed, when he saw the defeat in my eyes,
“ Look Angel, even if I let you in, you wouldn’t be able to talk to him…He’s not here.”
I looked at him, trembling from the amount of emotions running through my body,
“ Do you know where I can find him?” I asked in a shaky voice, “ I have to see him!”
Brian looked around, as if to check that no one was watching us, then he said,
“I’m not sure, he just told me he was going for a walk, usually he does that down by the lake.”
I smiled weakly and nodded,
“ Okay…thanks…” I turned around and started running down the street as fast as my legs could carry me. I needed to find him before I chickened out.
Brian stared after Angel as she ran down the street. Shaking his head, he closed the door as soon as she was out of sight. Leaning against the door, he sighed. As soon as Nick had found out about Angel, he had started acting strange. He hardly ever talked to Brian anymore and it was really starting to get on his nerves. Nick had ordered them to not kill anymore people, to drink stolen donor blood instead. When Brian had asked Nick why, all he had said was that he didn’t see any reason for drawing unwanted attention to the coven, and by killing people, that’s exactly what they did. Brian had let it go. He didn’t want to argue. There was no point in it really. Whenever he questioned one of Nick’s decisions, Nick would just give him short answers, that didn’t really explain anything. Brian had accepted this. He figured Nick was going through some sort of phase. It hurt, yes, but what could he do, when Nick didn’t want to tell him. The thing that hurt the most though, was the fact that Nick had lied to him. Nick had told him that he would kill Angel as soon as he saw her. When he hadn’t done that, he told Brian that he would do it the next time he saw her. He hadn’t done it then either. It had been like that every time Nick had the chance to kill her. And now Angel came knocking at their door looking for Nick, needing to see him. And she was crying, like someone had ripped her heart out. Brian was pretty sure he had figured out what was going on. He just wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do about it. That’s why he told Angel where to find Nick. She wasn’t on the warpath; he figured it would be safe. Besides, she and Nick had some serious talking to do.
Brian sighed again, and walked up the stairs to his room. Once inside, he let himself fall down onto the bed with a loud thud. He lay there staring up at the ceiling for what seemed like hours, falling into a trance-like state. The only thing that interrupted his thoughts was the growling of his stomach. It was time to go down to the fridge, find some blood, heat it up a bit and eat it, like he would have eaten soup before he was turned.
I ran all the way to lake on the outskirts of town. When I finally reached it, I stopped by the lakeshore to regain my breath. My pulse was racing and my heart was thumping deafeningly loud in my ears. It seemed that all the sounds of the night had disappeared, and all I could hear was the beating of my heart. It created an eerie feeling about the place, but I didn’t let that stop me. I was relieved to find that I had run out of tears to cry. I had been crying so much for the past 24 hours that my eyes were actually beginning to hurt. I needed to find Nick. Fast. The need to see him, talk to him, touch him, was overwhelming.
I started walking around the edge of the lake, looking for any kind of sign that Nick was there. I didn’t find any, so I started calling out his name. If he were there, he would surely hear me. I only called out his name a few times before I got a reply of sorts.
“ Angel?” the voice, Nick’s voice, said in my head, “ Is that you?”
I smiled at the sound of his voice, although it wasn’t really a sound, it was still confirmation that he had heard me.
“ Yes…Nick…it’s me!” I said out loud.
“ Angel, I need your help!” he said.
I started to panic. He sounded scared. How could that be? What could Nick possibly be scared of?
“ Where are you?” I asked in a shaky voice, “ What’s wrong?”
“ In the forest!” he said. He sounded as if he was hurt, “ The old stone cottage!”
My pulse had barely returned to normal, when all of a sudden it started pounding again.
“ I’m coming!” I said as I started running for the forest. Luckily I knew exactly what cottage he was talking about. As a child, my friends and I would go there to play, and I would go there alone sometimes, to get away from my parents and their fighting.
As I ran through the forest as fast as I could, I grabbed a few branches along the way, breaking of pieces I could use as weapons. In my hurry to get out of Kevin’s apartment, I had neglected to bring weapons. Usually I didn’t leave home without them, especially not when I was going to the vampire lair. Suddenly Nick’s voice sounded again,
“ Angel be careful!” he said, “They’ve got me surrounded, don’t let them know you’re here!”
I stopped. Now I was really panicking. Why was he talking like that? What could be so dangerous that he actually feared for his life? He was a vampire. A powerful one at that. Who could possibly be threatening his life? The only person I could think of was me, and well, I wasn’t about to kill him.
“ Who Nick?” I asked trying to remain calm, “ Don’t let who see me?”
“ Joseph!” he said, “Joseph and his gang!”
That didn’t make any sense. I had encountered Joseph and his gang and I didn’t have any problems with them. I mean, of course there were problems, but nothing out of the ordinary. They hadn’t really been a problem for me, so how could they be a problem for Nick? I decided not to try to figure it all out at the moment, because suddenly Nick voice penetrated my scull once again.
“ Angel! Hurry!”
I started running again. As soon as I neared the old cottage I slowed down to a sneaking pace, trying to get as close to the house as possible. Peaking through the low branches of the trees, I saw several vampires standing in a circle. Surrounding what I presumed was Nick. I walked closer, attempting to make as little noise as possible, while stepping on all the dry leaves covering the ground. Now I could see Joseph standing in the middle of the circle in front of Nick, his back toward me. I could see he was talking, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying. He moved a little to the side and I gasped as Nick came into view. He was on his knees. His shirt had been torn off and he was bleeding from a huge gap in his right side. There were also huge burn marks covering his entire body. He looked so fragile, not at all the powerful vampire he really was. I could feel the lump in my throat as I tried to suppress the tears that were threatening to spill. I had to concentrate. I had to get Nick away from them somehow.
“ Angel where are you?” Nick asked suddenly. I took a deep breath and whispered,
“ I’m here…I can see you,” I caught him discreetly looking around, as Joseph had turned his back to Nick. He saw me and held my eyes as I continued, “ Can you fight? Or are you too hurt?”
“ I can fight! Just not all of them…especially not Joseph!” He said.
“ Alright…I’ll get their attention, and you grab whatever you can find, to use as a weapon…okay?”
He nodded and I made my way further toward the group of vampires.
