Chapter 17
The next day, Memorial Day, was fairly uneventful. The boys stood outside, drinking beer and talking about the best way to grill hotdogs. Well not Gerry, the fascination Americans had with a grill and hotdogs was something he still couldn’t quite understand, but he was enjoying just being with the guys.
The girls stayed inside and gossiped about all the crazy family members. Ann told the story of how she met Gerry and laughed when he mother began to tear up.
Soon the food was ready and it was a free-for-all at the buffet table. “What are these?” Gerry asked pointing to a large glass baking dish.
“Those are Au Gratin Potatoes,” Ann replied. “Basically, you slice baked potatoes, cover them with chunks of cheese and globs of mayo, and finish with a light sprinkling of olives and bacon and bake.”
“Mayo?”
“Yes, mayo. Just try them. I promise you will like them.” Ann was right. As soon as his first bite touched his lips, Gerry thought he was in heaven. He ended up having two more servings and the whole table laughed when Charline reminded Gerry to have some vegetables.

That evening was not something that Lynn was looking forward to. It was the night when her Granddad, was going to take everyone out to dinner. He wasn’t the nicest of people and she knew his conservative ways would be a problem at some point.
“Please for the love of GOD, no one mention politics,” Lynn said as they drove through downtown Indianapolis. “I do not want to do this.”
“I know,” Ann said. “I don’t really want to do it either, but you know how hard it is for me to pass up a good steak. Just don’t worry, you know it won't go well, so just set your sights low and you won't be disappointed.”
“Thanks, that is a huge help,” Lynn said sarcastically.
Gerry tipped the valet and took Ann’s arm. Brendan helped Lynn out of the car and they walked into St. Elmo’s together.
The host asked, “Do you have a reservation?”
“Yes, it’s under Wedding.” Lynn said.
“Ok, the rest of your party is already here, I’ll seat you.” He said with a smile.
Lynn squeezed Brendan’s hand the whole way to the table. He leaned over and whispered into her ear, “It will be fine.”
“Easy for you to say,” Lynn said taking a deep breath. Finally they reached the table and her grandfather, Dave Wedding, stood to greet them.
Lynn started the introductions. “Granddad, you know Ann,” she said pointing to Ann. “This is her boyfriend, Gerard Butler. He’s an actor from Scotland.” Dave smiled and shook Gerry’ hand. “And this is Brendan Fehr, an actor from Canada. He was in Roswell, remember?” Lynn’s grandfather turned his attention to Brendan, smiling warmly and shaking his hand.
Lynn then turned to Michelle, Dave’s wife. “And everyone, this is Michelle, my step-grandmother.” Everyone smiled and said ‘hi’ to her.
Finally, they sat down. “So, how did all of you meet?” Michelle asked.
“Well, Ann did a movie with Brendan, who did a movie with Gerry. We’ve pretty much been inseparable since the movie premier.” Lynn answered.
“And what have you been doing?” Granddad asked, making a point to notice that Lynn’s career was not as profound as the rest of her companions.
Lynn gritted her teeth and said, “Well, I’m starting rehearsals for the Broadway revival of Les Miserables. I’m Fantine.” She said. For some reason she still wanted to impress her grandfather, even though he was an ass and she knew that nothing she did would be good enough unless she had become a corporate lawyer with no soul.
“She’s really very good. She has been singing around the house for weeks.” Brendan said, forgetting that he was not supposed to mention that he practically lived there. Lynn kicked him under the table.
“Oh, so you live with Lynn and Ann?” Granddad said, his eyes narrowing.
“No. Ummm…I actually live in LA. I’m staying with Gerry, who is their neighbor.” Brendan corrected himself. Ann and Lynn breathed a sigh of relief.
“Well, that’s great,” Michelle said with a fake, plastic smile.
“Shall we?” Granddad asked pointing at his menu.
“Great,” Gerry said opening his menu.
The table talked about what they were going to order and carried on with general conversation until the waiter came. Ann was first. “I’d like the Filet, very rare.” She said.
“I’ll have the Lamb, rare.” Gerry ordered.
“I’d like the House Salad.” Michelle ordered, always the light eater.
“I’ll have the New York Strip, medium well.” Brendan ordered.
“Can I have the Filet, very well, with no sauce?” Lynn said with a smile.
“And I’ll have the Filet, well done, with extra vegetables on the side,” Granddad ordered.
When the waiter was gone, he turned his attention to Lynn. “Are you sure you should eat the Filet. It’s high in fat.”
Brendan was appauled at the remark. Lynn was hardly fat, and what kind of person says that in front of a whole group of people? Lynn looked down at her lap. “I think I’ll be ok.” She said with as much defiance as she could muster. Brendan smiled to himself. That was his little pixie.
“So, Gerry... A Scott... We’re Scottish and Irish.” Granddad informed Gerry, like he gave a shit. What do you think about the London bombings?” Granddad asked, getting right into his topic of choice. politics.
“Well, it is obviously a tragedy. But I’d have to say that London is still a safe place to live. You can’t let the terrorist dictate how you live your life.” Gerry answered.
Dave smiled, obviously satisfied with that answer. Then he turned to Brendan, “Where are you from in Canada?”
“British Columbia.” Brendan answered, “Not too far from Washington State.”
“Oh, the liberal part.” Granddad said turning up his nose. Gerry and Ann looked at Brendan with supportive eyes. Lynn just rolled her eyes.
“Well, I guess you could say that. We are open minded.” Brendan clarified. He wanted to make a good impression, but he did not want to deny his home.
“Yeah, that’s a word for it.” Granddad said.
“Dave,” Michelle reprimanded quietly.
“What? It’s true.” He shot back.
“So, Mr. Wedding, How are things going with the house?” Ann asked. She knew that this kind of tension could last forever. She had witnessed it. She knew that Lynn would go postal. especially in her moody state.
“Things are going great. The outside is almost done. We are putting Quoins on the front entrance and changing a few things. But it should be done soon.” He answered. There was nothing that man loved more than talking about his house.
“You finally decided to hire a decorator that isn’t colorblind?” Lynn asked. She couldn’t help it. Ever since her grandfather had gotten on this decorating crusade, the inside of the house was looking more like a circus tent than an English Tudor.
“Well, for you information, Gene is an artist. She has a vision, and I trust her, more than you. It’s not like you are that artistic.” Granddad shot back, obviously looking down his nose at Lynn.
She was about to come back with another smart ass remark, but Ann grabbed her hand under the table to stop her. Instead, she took a deep breath and smiled.
“So, Ann, did you give any thought to law school?” Granddad asked. “I know Lynn here is a lost cause.” He winked. Brendan wanted to get up and bitch slap the man.
“No, actually the music business is going really well for me.” Ann said with a smile. God, if Dave had asked her once, he had asked you 100 times about law school.
Finally the food came, and Lynn was very bored with all the conversation about Graduate school. Her grandfather was highly impressed that Gerry had once been a lawyer and was baffled that he would ever quit. A man like that would never understand art. No matter how many artistically retarded people he hired to work for him.
“So, what do you think about the jury selections?” Granddad asked Lynn. He knew hoe to push her buttons.
“Well, I’m not all that familiar with American politics,” Gerry admitted.
Ann did really care, so she kept quiet. But Brendan looked Granddad in the eyes and said, “I think that it is a good thing the Democrats in Congress are fighting so hard. It will ensure that a moderate is put in, not a conservative.”
It looked as if Dave Wedding was going to have a heart attack. Lynn began speaking before he could get a word out, “Yeah, I think with all this talk of social reformers and strict constructionist, the point gets lost. We cannot have a conservative president, Supreme Court, and Congress at the same time. It’s not right. Next thing you know they will be requiring attendance at church to be a citizen. It isn’t right.”
Granddad nearly choked. “You must be kidding.” He said.
“No, I’m not. I personally like the Roe V. Wade ruling and I’d like to ensure that is stays protected. Call me a Liberal or a social reformer, but that’s what I think.” Lynn said sipping her wine.
“I agree with Lynn. I think it isn’t a matter or staying true to the constitution as much as an interpretations, and when you have a bunch of Republicans interpreting it, then you are going to get a republican outcome.” Brendan said.
Gerry, Ann, and Michelle just watched in silence. Granddad threw down his napkin for effect. “Well, I can see that my $200,000 for school went to great use. You are a liberal feminist who works as an actor and hangs out with other liberals. On the east coast no less.” He said with disgust.
Lynn rolled her eyes. He was always like this. Liberal was a dirty word, along with actor and East Coast.
They group ate their dinners in relative silence. With only the minor grumbling from Granddad. Brendan put his hand on Lynn’s thigh for comfort. He didn’t know how Lynn with so much spunk grew up with a man like that.
When they finished eating, Lynn looked at her friends for help. She wanted to get the hell out of there. “Well, we better be going.” Gerry said picking up the vibes Lynn was sending him.
Granddad stood up and pasted on his fake smile again, “Well, it was very nice meeting you Gerry. What are the chances you could date Lynn. Maybe she would grow up.” He said. Right there in front of Brendan and everyone. Gerry smiled nervously.
Lynn almost lunged at him, but Ann held her back. “And Brendan,” Granddad continued, “Hopefully after you have spent more time in our country, you will understand out politics better.” Shaking Brendan’s hand. Brendan wanted to punch the smug smile off of that bastards face, but he kept calm.
“Bye,” Lynn shot back at Michelle and she was nearly dragged out of the restaurant by Ann.
“AAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!” Lynn screamed once they were outside. “I fucking HATE that man. I think he is Satan, on earth or something.” She ranted as they waited for the valet.
“I’m sorry, Lynn. I wish things had gone better,” Gerry offered.
“Thanks, but I knew they were going to be like this. He is an asshole. It is in his blood.” Lynn said wrapping her arms around herself.
Brendan came up behind her wrapping his arms around hers. “Yeah, he is a dick. It’s a good thing he was your grandfather, or I was going to smack the shit out of him. ‘When you have lived in this country a little longer,’ what and ass! I’ve lived here for 6 years!” Brendan said looking up at the sky.
“Yeah, well not to mention he tried to pawn my boyfriend off on my best friend,” Ann said with a chuckle. She needed to lighten the mood.
Lynn cracked a smile at that. “Yeah, I wonder if there is a reason that EVERYONE seems to want me and Gerry together,” she said with a wicked grin.
“You bitch,” Ann shot back good naturally.
“You love me,” Lynn said.
“Your right.” Ann replied as they got into the car.

Luckily, dinner was early, leaving the four of them to go out before they left the next day. Ann’s parents and Teague and Jillian were just leaving for a movie when they got home, so Ann and Lynn decided to drop in on their friend Jessica before meeting the movie goers at a bar for a few drinks.
When they got to Jessica’s house, she came to the door in her towel. OMG! I haven’t seen you two in ages!” Jessica screamed as she hugged the life out of Ann and Lynn. Introductions were made. “Excuse my outfit, boys,” Jessica said, “I just got out of the shower. Girls come with me we have much to catch up on.”
“Actually,” Lynn said, “I have to pee so I will meet you guys up there.”
As Ann followed Jessica up to her room, Jessica turned to her and asked, “Are Lynn and Brendan serious?”
“I don’t think so why?” Ann replied.
“He is so cute.” Ann laughed when Jessica made a face trying to express how cute she thought he was.
When the girls rejoined the boys, it was obvious to both Brendan and Gerry that Jessica didn’t really like wearing clothes. Her skirt was so short, her ass was practically hanging out and her top wasn’t leaving much to the imagination.
Over the next few hours, Ann noticed that Jessica was getting really flirty with Brendan. Every time she touched his arm of chest, Ann looked over to Lynn who was getting madder by the minuet. It looked as thought Brendan and Jessica were the only ones who didn’t notice Lynn’s mood because Gerry whispered to Ann to take Lynn outside. Ann took it one better by announcing that they were going to get going. “Sorry Jess, but we are supposed to meet my parents, brother and sister-in-law in a few minuets for drinks.”
“It’s okay,” Jessica said as she hugged everyone, saving Brendan for last. “Call me next time you are in town.” When she went to give Brendan a hug, Lynn grabbed his arm and pulled him out the door.
“What was that about?” Brendan asked with a confused look.
“As if you didn’t know what was going on,” Lynn said as she sat in the front seat with Ann in the driver’s.
“What? What did I do?”
“She was flirting with you, throwing herself at you. Tell me you didn’t notice it?”
“I didn’t. But what is the big deal? I thought we weren’t getting serious?”
“Just forget it,” Lynn snapped back at him. The rest of the drive to the bar was in complete silence, not even radio.

When they got to the bar, Ann’s parents and Teague & Jillian had already secured a table big enough for all eight of them. They sat there as Ann took the initiative to tell what happened at dinner with Granddad.
As the night wore on, the drinks kept flowing. Brendan, already a sheet to the wind, leaned over to Lynn, who was still pissed and hadn’t said anything to him all night. “Why aren’t you drinking?”
Right as Lynn opened her mouth, the music stopped. “Because I am having your baby!” she screamed.
