Argh, I’m so sorry its been so long again. I got a new computer the other day so I haven’t really had much access to the net for a few days. But I’m back now! Haha.
I hope you’re all still enjoying this.
Thanks again for reading, I really appreciate it.
Chapter 18
She hated drinking, ever since her father had been so heavily affected by it. She thought it was a weak way out of problems, a way to just blur your thoughts, to avoid what you needed to think about.
But as she drank straight from the vodka bottle she had in her apartment, she didn’t even twitch at what she was doing. All she thought about was the hot sting of the drink as she drank it, and how with every sip, everything she saw that night started to become a haze that she couldn’t make out, how every word became a sound she couldn’t really hear.
The moon shone brightly into her flat, and she shut her eyes. Ever since she was a little girl, she felt the moon was some presence in her life, something she could rely on more than anything else. It came out every night without fail, except in winter when clouds were thicker. She could depend on the clockwork of it, and the dependency gave her faith, even in something so huge and stellar.
She put the bottle on the table in front of her and leaned back, sighing. She didn’t think she’d ever forget what happened tonight, or what had happened over the last few weeks.
The only thing she wanted to remember was Wil.
And almost like magic, she heard a knock on the door. She stood slowly, the alcohol rushing to her head. She crept quietly to the door, remembering how late it was, and not wanting to wake up her neighbours.
Opening the door, she came face to face with a dirty, shivering Wil. Without thinking, she threw her arms around him, the tears that had been sitting in her eyes finally dripping out. He held her back firmly, and she felt something between them – it felt like he was keeping something back, the same as she was.
She looked up at him, wiping some dirt from his tear stained face.
“You’re all dirty,” she whispered, thumbs still smoothing his cheeks. She waited to see if he would tell her why. But he didn’t.
She bit her lip, before saying, “Oh, Wil …”
“Everything’s going to be okay,” he whispered back, pushing her hair out of her face. “I promise.”
She smiled, and then stepped back. “Come in.”
“Been drinking some?” He asked, obviously seeing her nearly finished vodka bottle on the table.
She blushed, “Yeah, I have …” She paused. “Please don’t hate me.”
“What? Hate you? Why would I?”
“Drinking is so vile and horrible; I hate it, I just …”
“I know, Alyn.”
I wish you did.
He picked up the bottle and studied it in the moonlight. He nodded to himself, still holding it in his hands. He sat on her sofa and patted the empty space next to him.
She sat down and curled up against him, trying to give his chilled skin some of her warmth. He wrapped a comforting arm around her shoulder, and tugged at it.
“I know how sometimes it seems the only thing you can do is drink,” he whispered, holding the bottle up in front of them. “I know what its like to feel that what you put into your body is the only thing that you can control … don’t ever apologise for trying to take control, Alyn. Your life is the only thing in this fucked up World that you should be able to control.”
He angled the bottle towards her, and she leant up and took it. Staring at it for a few seconds, she saw flashes of her mother and father arguing, her old school friends crawling around the bars at home, being picked up by older men and being too drunk to stop them …
She threw the bottle against the wall, and it smashed instantly, the liquid and glass becoming one in the dim light.
He laughed slightly, “I wasn’t expecting that.”
“I’ll clean it up later,” She laughed too.
“I’m really proud of you, though.”
She pushed his face towards hers and kissed him softly, “I wouldn’t have done it without you being here.”
“Well then, I’ll take that kiss as a thank you. And you’re welcome.”
She smiled, leaning on his chest. She liked how he not once asked her why she was crying. She loved how they felt so close.

Alyn opened her eyes and saw Wil sitting on the chair next to her. She sprung up quickly.
“Oh my God, Wil.” She rubbed her eyes.
I fell asleep. Crap.
“Hey, sugar. You fell asleep.” He smiled.
“I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay,” he looked at the clock briefly, and so did she. 4 am. “You’re cute while you’re sleeping.”
She blushed. “You … you might as well stay, now.”
He ran a hand around her face and kissed her forehead, “I’d better go.”
She nodded in understanding, and they both stood up together.
They stood facing each other. She looked into his big, sleep-deprived eyes.
“I don’t know what to say…” She started.
“Then don’t say anything,” he smiled slightly. He pulled her into a hug, and she wrapped her arms around him. Before she even realised, she was rubbing the back of his neck, smoothing the hair there. He seemed more relaxed then than she’d ever seen him.
“You don’t have to leave ...” She whispered against his ear.
He seemed to consider it for a moment, before hugging her tightly again.
“I … I do. It’s not fair for me to stay.”
“Why?” He let go of her, offering no explanation. “Wil, why?”
“I can’t explain-” he said, trying to get around her.
“Please, Wil, what is it?”
He finally got passed her, and she looked defeated. As he got to the door, he sighed and turned around.
“I’m not good enough for you.”
“Don’t be silly, Wil. You are. Don’t say that.”
“You’ll see, Alyn … and for when you do … I’m really sorry.”
He opened the door, looked back one last time, and then left, without saying a word.
Tears welled in her eyes and she thought about all that time ago when they first met, and what he had said to her.
“I didn’t say you should trust me.”
