Davey turned back to the window and saw movement outside. His new eyes pierced the dark and he recognized the shape, “He’s here!” he whispered to the others, trying not to make it obvious.
Roxy’s head snapped up, “That son of a bitch is not getting away this time. Frankie, go around back. Ville, go with him and come from up the street. Davey go out front and meet him.”
Jade had already disappeared out the kitchen door.
“And you?” Ville asked as he headed out the back door with Frank.
“I’ll be there in a second.” She grinned at him and he shivered.
Ville followed Frank outside into the night and gave the younger man a nod before vaulting the fence into the neighbor’s yard and going around to the front. He could see Pete talking to Davey in the front yard. Davey was doing a good job distracting him. He saw Frank coming at them from the opposite direction.
The plan was to surround Pete, disable him and drag him somewhere where the rotting stench of his corpse wouldn’t be noticed. They had lured him to the house simply by having Davey write him a note that they left on his car, begging Pete to come take him away so they could run off and be happy together.
“Of course I want to come with you! You gave me this wonderful gift.” Davey was saying as he approached Pete.
“Really?” absolute joy filled Pete’s eyes.
As if following some unspoken signal, Davey lunged at Pete, knocking him off balance, Frank dove and caught his legs while Ville grabbed him around the throat. The three of them held him down while Roxy burst out of nowhere and pinned Pete with one hand. She put one foot on his back and they all paled at the sickening crunch of his spine breaking.
Roxy kept her foot in place so Pete couldn’t move and the bones couldn’t knit back together, “We’ve got to move him.” She said, glancing from left to right at the street, just as Jade pulled the car out of the driveway.
“You assholes!” Pete hissed. He couldn’t feel his legs and it was starting to annoy him. He turned his glare onto Davey, “You lied to me!”
Davey flipped him off, “You hurt my best friend and turned me into a fucking vampire!” he said harshly, “Forgive me for not feeling bad.” He placed his foot at the top of Pete’s spine and stomped down, paralyzing him completely, “Let’s get this shit over with before he can do anything else.”
Roxy turned to Ville, “Can you keep your hand there?” she pointed where Davey was standing.
“Sure.” Ville picked Pete up, using his shattered spine as a handle. He could feel the bones tying to knit under his hand and it was creeping him out, “Up in the mountain?”
It was a ten minute drive to Mt. Baldy, and another twenty to reach a spot isolated enough to leave a putrid corpse.
Pete was thrashing weakly as his spinal column put itself back together, “You fuckers! Let me go!”
Roxy grinned at him, “Sure thing.” She handed Davey a very scary looking hunting knife and sighed, “I promised.”
He took the knife and approached Pete, but looked to Ville, “Let him go please?”
Ville dropped Pete and stepped back, “Kill him love.”
Davy stepped forward and drew the knife savagely across Pete’s throat, severing his head and stepping neatly out of the way of the arterial spray.
They all wrinkled their noses as Pete started to decompose. It was like looking at a time lapse video of a body rotting over a period of weeks rather than seconds.
All in all, it was a rather anti climactic end after all they had gone through.
“I told you if we had a plan we wouldn’t have any more catastrophes.” Roxy said smugly, getting behind the wheel of the Crown Vic.
“Yeah yeah.” Frank muttered, slouching in is seat.
“So what did you tell Them?” Ville asked casually as Davey came out on the balcony where he was having a cigarette.
Davey sighed and sat down in Ville’s lap after he tossed out his butt, “I told Them I killed the vampire and that I was retiring.” He nestled his head in the curve of Ville’s shoulder.
Ville wrapped his arms around Davey, “And They just let you?”
He felt the shorter man shrug, “They couldn’t exactly stop me. Of course there was a fuss. That’s what took so long. I was the best hunter in the whole organization.” He said, not boasting, just stating a fact, “And I decided to retire decades before most people do. I told Dad that I wanted to settle down, focus on the band, maybe have a family someday.” He turned his head so he was looking into Ville’s eyes, “Is that even possible?”
Ville shrugged, “I don’t know.”
Roxy knocked on the glass door in the now unused Perry Mason suite, “Can we come out too?” Frank looked over her shoulder, as if expecting them to be in a compromising position.
Ville waved them out.
Jade came out with him and he and Roxy took the remaining chairs, the fourth having been lost to another one of Frank and Ville’s wrestling matches. Frank sat himself on the balcony railing, swinging his legs like a little kid.
“I’m officially a free man.” Davey said, turning his body so he could see the group.
“Oh yeah? They let you out?” Jade asked, pulling Roxy’s hand into his lap where he stroked it with his thumb.
“Yep. I am no longer part of the mysterious ‘They’ that all vampires fear.” He grinned.
Frank snorted, “ALL vampires don’t fear Them.”
“That’s because some vampires are not the smartest crayons in the box.” Ville sneered.
Frank flipped him off and lit a cigarette.
“Roxy?” Ville asked in an abrupt change of subject, “Can we have families?”
She looked around, gesturing to everyone sitting on the balcony, “What do you think this is?”
“No, I mean families like kids and such.” He clarified.
Something dark passed through her eyes before she shut it down, “No. We can’t have kids.”
“Oh.” Disappointment clouded his eyes for a brief moment, “Well then, what do we do from here?”
“Whatever the fuck we want.” Frank said.
Ville looked at him sharply, “What?”
