Chloe was scared, but not for herself. She was scared for the hundred and forty-five people in the woods around the Master’s camp, scared for the people in the city behind her. She could have cared less in that moment if she died, but everyone behind her had to live, or it would all be in vain.
The tents in the distance held more horror than a twenty year old girl should have to face in her life, but Chloe had been never been a normal girl. She could feel Brendon on her left, Spencer on her right. Alex, Jon, and Naida were on the other side of Brendon, Bill, Ray, and Nia were on the other side of Spencer. She could feel Ryan at her back, her backup in case anything went wrong.
She heard the scream from the tents and raised her gun, moving in a line toward the tents and the figures that spotted her and her little group there. She had decided that it would be best to show the Master that there were some who were brave enough to face him, even if they’re hearts were all beating wildly.
A tall man, nearly seven foot tall, stepped from the tent. He demanded attention without even trying and held his hand up, calling his vampires back to him. The Master wasn’t that bad looking, with blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. He looked at her, but she felt like he was looking through her instead.
“Ah, Ms. Chloe Bryar, I was hoping you would show up here in person. I am the Master, Ivanslav.” He gave a low bow, but his eyes never moved from Chloe’s face, like he was testing her reaction.
Ryan moved, without Chloe’s signal, between her and Brendon. “Ivanslav! You asshole! You left me for dead!”
“Wait, Ryan. He’s the bastard that half turned you and left you weak to let anyone kill you off?” Ryan nodded and Chloe turned back to Ivanslav. “Well, hello then, Ivanslav. I’m Ryan’s master now.”
Something close to anger flashed across Ivanslav’s face, but it was gone just as quickly. “Congratulations, Ms. Bryar. He is a lucky catch. I should have turned him when I had the chance.”
“Too bad you’re going to die now that I know what you did to him.” Chloe raised the gun again and shot before Ivanslav could react properly. She hit him in the shoulder and he screamed an angry order. Vampires started to descend on them and Chloe just barely had time to yell her own orders before she was shooting vampires that were too close for comfort.
Her group was herded into a circle with vampires around them and she was even more scared for their lives now. She had one backup weapon, but she wanted to be out of ammo before she used that. She heard someone scream and turned to see a vampire plunge a five foot long sword into Bill’s heart. Her screams joined the other people’s and she tried to move toward him.
His laughter stopped her from moving. He looked at the vampire in front of him and smiled. “You think a little sword through the heart can stop me? Please.” He laughed almost maniacally before leaning into the vampire with the sword. “I always wanted to do that.”
He yanked the sword quickly out of his chest and shoved it into the vampire who had stuck him. Gunshots sounded from his gun as he took out another two. Then, almost like his gunshot was the cue, everyone’s guns went off and vampires fell writhing to the ground.
Ivanslav kept screaming orders as the vampires broke their circle and Chloe’s people burst out, shooting and stabbing with gusto and bravado. She made her way to him, killing six or seven before she stood a few foot in front of him. “Me and you, Ivanslav.”
“You took the one vampire I wanted for myself. I will relish killing you, Chloe Bryar.” He dropped the shields off his body and threw his knife to the side.
Chloe took the incentive and threw her guns at the nearest one of her people and then looked back at Ivanslav. “Ryan would have never been as happy with you as he is with me.”
“Really now? He doesn’t look too happy to me right now. To me he looks …dead.” Ivanslav gestured behind Chloe and she glanced behind her, regretting it instantly as she saw Ryan’s head looking at her, his body a few feet away.
Chloe turned back to Ivanslav just as he attacked and dodged it effortlessly. She slashed at him with long, black nails and cut his face open. “He knew what the consequences were, but for a while, he was happy with me. Could he have said the same if he had stayed with you? I think not.”
She hit him again, but he was faster this time and slashed her with his own nails. She took some of the blood onto her fingers and licked them clean, feeling the scratched heal miraculously. The look on Ivanslav’s face made it all worthwhile. “A vampire that heals with her own blood. Interesting. Too bad I’m going to have to kill you.”
She fell to the ground as he flew over her and was on her feet and turned around before he had regained his composure. She heard Naida’s soothing voice scream in terror and glanced behind Ivanslav to find Spencer’s body laying broken with a gaping hole in his chest where his heart had once been.
Pain and anger swept through her own body as she looked at Ivanslav. He had killed two people she loved. She growled and felt the full force of her vampire come out, showing him the true Chloe. Her hair was like golden sunlight, her eyes like green fire, skin translucent. Her fangs were longer than his were, but fit her face perfectly.
She dove at him and sank her teeth deep into his neck before he even had a chance to recover. She ripped out a piece of his neck as he threw her away from him and spit it at him. “One, Ivanslav. The next one won’t allow you to live.”
He held his hand over his bleeding neck, but found something else that he thought he could use against her. He grabbed Alex, who had venture too close in dragon form, and held him in front of him. “I will kill him if you do not back off, Bryar.”
Alex looked at Chloe with horror filled eyes just as a gun blast was heard close to them. Chloe blinked when the blast occurred and felt the blood spray onto her. There were thicker things there as well. She opened her eyes and found Alex laying on the ground.
She felt the anger well deeper and, though she knew it was an accident, she let the anger toward whoever had shot him well inside her and pull that new storage of power out of her. She threw it into Ivanslav, but not to make him feel pleasure as she had with the boys, but to burn him from the inside out.
She threw the power into all his vampires, let them all burn from the inside out, until there weren’t any left. She looked around the field at the smoldering ashes of the vampires that had killed her dearest friends and fell to her knees crying. She didn’t know who was left alive with her, but she had saved the city.
The loss of Spencer, Ryan, and Alex was eating away her heart as she sat there. She would never fall in love again, with all those she truly cared about dead. Where was Brendon? It was the only clear thought in her head. She had loved him more than she had loved Spencer, and for that she felt bad, but she couldn’t find him now.
She stood and walked through the throng of dead bodies littering the ground until she came to the valley where the survivors were all standing, looking around at the ashes in shocked happiness.
She walked into the crowd and felt a hand on her shoulder, turning to see Jon and Naida, bloodied. “Chloe! Thank God!” Jon hugged her, quickly followed by Naida. “We were so worried about you. Have you seen Spencer and Ryan?”
“And Alex?” Nia and Ray came up behind them, bleeding from deep cuts in their chest and arms from blades of some kind.
At the mention of the names, Chloe broke down and began to fall, only caught by Jon’s hands on her arms. “They’re gone, all gone.” She kept shaking her head over and over again, finding little comfort in Jon’s arms.
She saw Brianna from over Jon’s shoulders and started to cry even harder. She didn’t know where Brendon was and that was killing her on the inside. She felt arms around her waist and caught the heavy scent of vampire blood, pine trees, and underneath it all, Brendon.
She completely collapsed with the scent. He turned her around and sat with her on the ground, running his fingers through her hair and speaking soothingly. “It’s alright, Chloe. I’m here for you.”
Chloe wrapped her arms around him tighter. “I thought I had lost everyone I ever loved, Brendon. I thought I was going to be alone for the rest of my life.”
“You’ll never be alone, Chloe.” She sobbed again and he lifted her head to kiss her gently. “I love you, Chlobear. You know that, right? I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you.”
Brendon looked up at the others to see if he could find Alex. He had spoken with Alex before all this began and told him that he wanted Chloe for himself, for eternity. Alex had been more than understanding and had even helped Brendon pick out a ring for Chloe. It was little weird knowing that his ex-boyfriend was the one helping him get up the courage to propose to the woman he loved.
“Where’s Alex?”
Nia started to sob louder than Chloe had been, clinging to Ray like he was the last thing solid in her life. It was all Brendon needed to know that Alex wasn’t coming back to them, wasn’t going to be his best man. He looked down at Chloe and sighed. “I guess this means Alex isn’t going to be here when I get up the courage to ask you to marry me, huh?”
Chloe jumped as if she had been slapped, shocked by the revelation. “What did you say?”
“I spoke with Alex while you were with all the shooters and told him that I love him, but wanted nothing than to spend my life with you. He helped me find a ring and was going to help me if I needed it. He was going to be my best man. I can’t believe he’s gone.” Tears sprang to Brendon’s eyes as he thought about his best friend.
Everyone seemed to be crying at the loss of one person or another. Many had died, many had found their family had been turned into the Master’s vampires and had had to kill their own relatives. It was too much for Chloe, she needed happy.
She laid her head on Brendon’s shoulder and sighed. “I would have said yes.”
It was Brendon’s turn to look shocked. “What?”
“I would have said yes if you had asked me to marry you. I love Spencer, but I would have given it all up for you, Brendon.”
“So, will you marry me still?”
Chloe nodded and kissed Brendon, wrapping her arms around his neck. He laid his forehead against hers and sighed. “If this wasn’t also the saddest day of my life, I would say this is the happiest I’ve ever been.”
“Me too, Brendon.” Chloe sighed and stood. “Ok, everyone, we need to start going through the wreckage and finding the bodies of our comrades.” She caught sight of Bill. “Bill, do you mind explaining to everyone how you could possibly take a sword to the chest and be walking completely healed in front of us?”
Bill had the grace to look embarrassed and merely shrugged. “I’m special? What can I say? I’m one of a kind.”
“I want more of an explanation than that later, Bill.” He nodded and Chloe turned back to helping them go through the wreckage. It was not what she wanted to do, but it kept her mind off who she was looking for, what she was looking for. Maybe when they got back to the office she could finally have that breakdown she was waiting for.
