Ville sat next to her at lunch on Monday. Mige was nowhere to be found. Bam sat on the other side of Ville, and Rake sat on the other side of Hayley. All the boys had the grace to keep themselves down to a dull roar.
“I just can’t believe it. It’s like I don’t exist to him or something.” Hayley was staring down at her hands. Ville pushed his French fries towards her. She didn’t even seem to notice. He and Rake exchanged a look. When she wasn’t eating off Ville’s plate, there was really a problem.
“Oh honey,” Rake put his hand over hers. “Don’t think about it right now. You’re just going to make yourself more upset. So he’s not ready to talk right now. He will be soon.”
“Do you think so?” she looked up
hopefully. He nodded. Ville eyed Rake sharply. He was just as protective of Hayley as she was of him. What was this boy thinking about?
“Yeah,” Rake nodded. “Of course.”
“He so wants her.” Bam muttered. Ville elbowed him in the ribs. He chuckled and leaned against the Finn’s shoulder. They stayed like that for a few seconds.
“You busy this weekend?”
“No.”
“Come home with me on Friday. Stay with me. We’ll go straight to the rink in the morning.” He knew he was close to begging, but he just couldn’t help it. He was desperate. The time he had with him seemed hurried and rushed, not at all what he needed.
“Okay,” Ville agreed. Their eyes locked, and there was a jolt of electricity that surged through them. He wanted to bend forward, wanted to kiss Ville. But, of course, they couldn’t. Not now. Not in school.
Rake escorted Hayley to class, and Ville offered to walk with Bam. They walked, shoulder to shoulder, not speaking.
When they arrived at Bam’s class, Ville’s reached out and touched his shoulder. The lightest of feathery touches. It seemed to burn through him, though. They stared at each other for a few minutes.
“I’ll call you. Tonight. To go over a routine I had in mind.” Ville said softly. Bam nodded and watched the figure skater walk down the hallway. He didn’t want to think about how long it would be until tonight.
**
Bam sat up in his bedroom, reading a skate magazine. Or trying to. He was staring at the cordless phone he’d brought upstairs, willing it to ring. He stared and stared, ignoring the glossy book in his hands.
“Come on. Please?” he said softly.
The shrill ringing of the phone made his jump. She scrabbled to snatch it off his bed. He pressed the green button and held it to his ear.
“Hello?” he hoped his voice wasn’t as squeaky as it sounded to him.
“Bam?”
“Ville?”
“Hi, sweetheart.” He sounded smooth and relaxed, different than in school. Something warm spread in Bam’s stomach. He smiled and tucked the magazine away.
“What’s up?”
“Not much,” there was a pause. “I don’t really want to talk about skating.”
“I know.” Bam swallowed. “I didn’t either.”
“What do you want to talk about?” Ville asked.
“I don’t know.” Bam confessed. “I just…I really want to hear you talking.”
“Hmm,” that was all it took. The other boy launched into a story about when he was in elementary school. It was a funny story, and it did make the hockey player laugh out loud.
They chatted about nothing for an hour. Reluctantly, Ville glanced at the clock,
“I need to get to sleep.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m positive.” Ville chuckled. There was silence. “But I’ll see you tomorrow.” His voice was low, seductive.
“That’s so long from now.”
“Not so long at all.” The Finn chuckled again. Bam groaned. “Are you in bed?”
“Yeeees,” he said slowly. “Is this one of those phone calls?”
“No!” Ville sighed. “Are you in clothes you sleep in?”
“Yes,”
“Lay down. Get under your blankets; get all nice and comfortable on your pillows.” Ville directed. Bam obeyed, snuggled up on his side, the phone against the ear that wasn’t pressed into his pillow.
“Okay,”
“All right. Now, I’ll tell you this much. If I were there, I would be spooned up against you. I’d have my arms wrapped around your waist, my chest against your back. You’d be able to feel my heart thumping against you.”
“Would I?” his voice was so low and soothing, he could almost feel the warmth of the boy. Bam yawned.
“Yes. I’d even sing you a lullaby in Finnish. The same one that my mother used to sing to me when I was a little boy.” There was silence on the other line.
“Bam? Are you awake?” heavy breathing said that he was not. “Good night, my darling one.”
He clicked the end button on his own extension and tossed it on his nightstand, littered with half burned candles and used incense sticks. He sighed as he curled into his silk pillows.
“Oh, I wish you were here with me. I wish that I really could have my arms around you, Bam.” He said softly.
He curled under his comforter and tried to picture Bam there next to him. Every time he closed his eyes to the blessed darkness, the image of a smiling face with curly brown hair and lovely blue eyes floated before him.
Ville reached out for this image, but every time it was almost in his grasp, it faded away, like shapes in the smoke.
