Christmas morning dawned bright and clear. The snow glimmered under the light from the sun. Lenny yawned and rolled over, shivering slightly as she tried to huddle closer to her boyfriend.
To her dismay, there was no one there. She sat upright and opened her eyes blurrily.
“Bam?” she slurred, mouth thick with sleep. “Where are you? Bam? Where did you go?”
There was no reply. She strained her ears and heard nothing from their bathroom. With a slight pout, Lenny curled back up into a ball. Before closing her eyes again, she happened to glance at the clock.
Five in the goddamn morning. Why in the world would she be up at this hour? Why would anyone be up besides the people who worked at Krispy Kreme?
She was just drifting back to sleep when a huge weight flopped next to her on the bed. Good, Bam had come back to bed. Maybe now she could get some sleep. But then there was another weight and another.
And then the bouncing started.
“Lenny, Lenny, Lenny!” several voices chorused. “Come on! It’s time to be awake.”
“It is NOT time to be awake. It will not be ‘awake time’ for several more hours.” She growled, pulling the blanket over her head. Quick as a wink, the cover was yanked off her.
And she was left in a bra and panties in front of everyone. She sat up, angry.
“Did you just want a free peep show? I’m not getting up, okay? Give me my blanket, my boyfriend, and go to bed yourselves. You must be on crack or something.” She tried to lie back down.
“How did you know?” Novak demanded. Everyone burst into laughter. Lenny sighed and sat up again.
“You’re not going to let me sleep, are you?”
“Nope,” they all grinned. She groaned and stretched her arms above her head.
“Can I take a shower?”
“Nope,”
“Brush my teeth? My hair?”
“Nope!” Bam was at their dresser. He threw her an extra long t-shirt.
“It’s freezing! I’ll catch a cold!” Lenny protested even as she pulled it on over her head. Bam just smiled at her.
“Oh, I’ll warm you up later.” He promised. Instantly her face heated up and Lenny coughed a few times. They trooped downstairs, Bam dragging Lenny by the hand.
“Oh, wow,” she stopped dead on the stairs, staring at the Christmas tree and the pile of presents beneath. She may have been a best selling author, but she hadn’t had money her whole life. She’d never seen so many wrapped packages under a tree.
“Come on, come on, let’s get started!” Bam demanded, already giddy. He tugged insistently on her hand. April came just then from the kitchen, holding a tray full of steaming mugs. She took one look at Helena state of undress and glared at Bam.
“I thought I told you to go and see if she was awake, not wake the poor girl up!”
“Well, I just sped up the process. Come on, let’s open the presents!”
“I’m sorry, Lenny.” April handed her a mug of hot chocolate. “You can go back to bed, if you want.”
Bam’s face fell. He even looked heartbroken when everyone got a mug of cocoa except him. Clearly his had gone to Lenny. She rolled her eyes and sighed as she took a sip.
“No, thanks, April. I’m up. I’ll just stay up.” Her boyfriend seemed to glow, especially when she passed him her drink.
“Lenny gets to open the first present!” Bam announced. Lenny blinked and rubbed her eyes as he passed her back her drink. She curled up on the couch and watched as Bam dove into the pile of gifts beneath the tree.
“Why does she get the first one?” Dico pouted. April glared.
“Maybe because you woke the poor girl up at five in the morning on Christmas Day? I think she gets to open the first one too.”
“It’s because she’s a girl, isn’t he?” he grumped. Lenny rolled her eyes and kicked him gently.
“Well, I suppose we could always make you a girl, if it means so much to you.” The boy paled and shook his head. Satisfied, Lenny continued to wait. After much moving of packages, Bam finally came up, triumphantly, with a small one.
Lenny tried not to let her surprise show on her face. Surely he’d want her to open a big one first? If nothing else to just get it out of the way? But then again, she never was able to question anything Bam did.
He knelt in front of her on the couch and presented it to her with a flourish. It was nicely wrapped. Lenny smiled shyly as she tugged off the white ribbon and peeled off the metallic red paper.
There was a small, domed velvet box inside. Her heart leapt into her mouth as she pried it open.
On a bed of velvet rested a folded piece of notebook paper. Lenny tried very hard not to let her disappointment show, but knew she was failing. Miserably. She unfolded the paper and smoothed it out.
“Merry Christmas! Go into the kitchen and go dig around in those herbal teas you like so much.” She recognized Bam’s handwriting instantly and put down the note to look at him.
“Are you serious?”
“Not me, Santa Claus. Go and do it,” he urged her. April shot her a sympathetic look as she trotted, barefoot and shivering to the kitchen.
The thing was, Lenny drank different sorts of tea. She was always buying new boxes, so there was a good half dozen or so to go through. Lenny pulled herself onto the counter and dug through every box. Of course the next note was at the bottom of the last box.
“Prick,” she mumbled as she read the next note. It had her going, of all places, to Raab’s room. To his dirty clothes hamper.
The writer paused. She was quite sure that Bam had something spectacular planned at the bottom of all this, but she had to question whether or not it was worth going into Raab’s dirty underwear for.
She didn’t even have a hazardous material suit.
But, Lenny knew if she didn’t do what she needed to; she’d never be able to live it down. With a sigh and quick prayer, she tiptoed upstairs into Raab’s room.
