Another three months of touring had passed, and by now the Hellbound world tour was over and both bands had been booted straight onto the US leg of the Ozzfest tour. It was great for all of them, especially the girls who would be meeting up with so many good friends on tour, but none were as happy as one young Jessica Conway who finally got to spend some time with her beloved boyfriend; Rex Brown of Pantera. She hadn’t seen him for almost five months when they walked backstage at the first show, and she heard a distinctive voice from behind her shout ‘MRS BROWN!’ and turned to see her Rex.
‘BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!’ She had screamed in delight before running and jumping straight up into his arms, crying because she had missed him so much. Rex had called her ‘Mrs Brown’ from about only five months into their now five year relationship, he loved her more than words could ever express and was delighted to be able to spend as much time as he wanted with her now the two bands where on the same tour. That also meant
Jade got to see someone special too. Not only her ex Phil, but the man she called one her best friends.
She and Dimebag (Pantera’s guitarist) had grown close at the time she began dating Phil, and their friendship had stayed strong even after her split with him which was now well over a year ago. He was over the moon to see his little buddy again, and immediately ‘stole’ her away so they could have a good long talk over a few beers. In turn, Jade introduced the bands to each other, and new friendships were formed and more numbers added to the little motley crue mix of both bands now being joined by Pantera too in all their partying and various shenanigans. It was the best time of her life, and with each gig that passed Jade only found herself having more and more fun, and more and more sex too. She and Jim had restored the balance of friendship and sex back to its old level and were enjoying each other very much, something Dime found greatly amusing.
‘He’s your own private man whore’ he laughed as he and Jade sat in the sun smoking weed and drinking beer after she had just returned from being dragged off into a darkened corner by the man in question.
‘Jade’s personal stud, on call 24-7’ she laughed as she lay back on the grass, her head next to Dime’s as he lay in the opposing direction.
‘I’ve missed chilling out with you dudette’ he said suddenly, still laughing about her ’24-7’ comment.
‘And I missed you too pink beard’ she said, giving his goatee a little tug. And she really had. Dime was such a down to earth and friendly guy, everyone loved him. He was beyond amazing. He also knew Jade better than most people, and knew how to handle her best and worst moods too which would be something that would bode well a little further down the line on the tour, since her happiness was about to be ruined greatly with some devastating news.
Sharon Osbourne sat alone in her husband’s plush carpeted dressing room backstage at the show in North Carolina one morning in floods of tears. If she smoked or drank she would have really needed something at that moment, to try and give herself the confidence she needed to relay the earth shattering news her best friend Jules Barry had just told her on the phone, not being able to reach Jade’s cell. Just then Ozzy came ambling in followed by his huge hulk of a guitarist Zakk Wylde.
‘Darling? What’s wrong?’ said Ozzy with great concern as his wife got up off the couch and dried her eyes.
‘I have to find Jade Ozzy, I’ve just been given some terrible news. I can’t tell you until she knows, it’s only fair’ said Sharon, feeling her heart breaking for her already.
‘Sharon I just saw her going off to get breakfast with Dime and Jim, I’ll go grab her now before she goes too far’ said Zakk, turning on his heel and running back out of the dressing room to find Jade.
‘Bring Dime back with you love, I’ll need him close by to calm her down’ shouted Sharon after him.
‘Okay boss’ Zakk shouted back over his shoulder, wondering what in the hell was wrong. When he found them he told Jade Sharon needed to speak to her and that Dime should come too, so before leaving with Zakk they asked Jim if he could fetch them something from the nearby diner and off they went back to the dressing room.
‘Sharon? What’s wrong?’ Said Jade as she walked into the room and saw her godmother, still crying.
‘Sweetheart, come here. I don’t know how to tell you this, I really don’t. I’m so sorry darling, but your uncle Jamie died last night. I’m so, so sorry’ wept Sharon as she threw her arms around Jade, who was stood frozen to the spot, her bottom lip starting to wobble. She couldn’t take it in, but the words had hit her like an iron bolt being rammed right through her skull.
‘W-what?’ she stammered as she let out a cry, clinging to Sharon as she held her tightly, Ozzy coming over to lend his support too.
‘There was a shooting in New Jersey. Jamie was coming out of a gas station when he got caught in the crossfire. A single bullet hit him straight in the heart, and there was nothing they could do to save him. Oh princess I’m just so sorry’ cried Sharon. She like anyone else knew how much Jade loved Jamie, so was prepared for what happened next; and that was for Jade to melt down and lose it completely. She untangled herself from the joint embrace of her godparents just as a primal howl so heartbroken came roaring up out of her throat, and she ran out of the door and past Dime and Zakk so fast they couldn’t stop her. When Sharon informed them of the news Dime’s face fell. He had met Jamie several times over the years, and got along brilliantly with him. But he put his own sadness aside, and ran after Jade as quickly as his black Converse sneakers would take him. He knew what she was likely to do and as other band members scattered around came to a halt to watch Dime running down the hallway to the source of much noise, they all wondered what the commotion was about. The noise itself was what Dime had predicted, Jade ripping apart everything that got in her way.
‘Dime what’s happening? Is that Jade going mental in there?’ said Jen as she ran over to him with Charlotte and Corey.
‘I need you to come in there with me and get her settled, and I need you to go and fetch a bottle of whisky, valium and as much weed as you can find. Jamie was shot dead last night’ said Dime, addressing Charlotte then Jen, who both put their hands over their mouths and gasped in shock at the news.
‘Okay c’mon dude, let’s go try and calm the hurricane’ said Charlotte as they heard glass smashing from inside the room. They braced themselves then went straight in there, dodging flying furniture thrown by Jade, who was screaming and crying at the top of her voice. Her howls sounded like something you’d hear in a mental asylum.
‘Can I do anything to help?’ said Corey as he jogged along at Jen’s side.
‘Helping me find where the fuck I put my valium would be the best thing you could do mate. Small orange bottle’ said Jen as they pushed the fire doors open and ran to the Hellbound tour bus. Meanwhile Charlotte and Dime had just about managed to diffuse the atom bomb that was Jade, both bear hugging her tightly as she cried hysterically.
‘Why the fuck did someone have to take him away from me? ‘WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY’ She screamed so loud Charlotte felt her eardrums hurt, but just kept holding her friend as she shed a few tears of her own.
‘Because this world is a fucked up place, a truly fucked up place to live sometimes, and this is one of those times. That asshole deserves to rot for what he did to Jamie. But we will get you through this, we’ll always be here for you right Charl?’ said Dime, looking over Jade’s head to where his arms extended to around the rhythm guitarist too.
‘He’s right Jade, we will. And I think someone else who always will be just walked in’ said Charlotte as she wiped her eyes and saw Jim walk in. They both let her go, and Jim opened his arms to her as she ran to him, throwing her arms around his neck and burying herself into his warmth as she continued to cry, the grief finally becoming too much as her legs buckled. She’d have fallen to the floor if he hadn’t of picked her up and sat down on one of the none trashed chairs, holding her in his arms on his lap and gently rocking her as he stroked her hair. Pretty soon Jen was back with Corey and the provisions Dime had asked for, and he set about mixing one hell of a strong drink with two crushed valium mixed in while Jen rolled a huge joint, solidly packed with weed.
‘I’m going to get someone to clean all this up, bring her into Ozzy’s dressing room’ said Sharon, poking her head around the door and taking in the carnage of Jade’s rampage. Jim did as instructed, with him, Charlotte, Dime and Jen going with them and Corey agreeing to go and tell whoever else needed to know the awful news with Sharon. Once she was settled (still clung to Jim) Jade was more or less force fed the drink by Jen, who carefully held the glass to her lips as her hands were shaking too much to hold it. Jim wasn’t sure if medicating her was the best solution, but just over forty minutes later when the concoction of valium, Jack Daniels and weed had kicked in and sent her to sleep he found out from Dime just how bad she could get when upset.
‘When that whole thing with her, Phil and Stefan happened and I had to separate them from near beating the shit out of each other she put her head through a window she was so mad. I could give you a whole list of other thing’s she’s done too man, but believe me when I say I know how to look after her. God knows what the fuck she would have done if Jen didn’t get that drink down her when she did. If you know Jade at all you’ll know how volatile she can be, and that when she really goes off on one she’s a huge danger to herself’ said Dime, watching Jim look over at the couch where she lay cuddled up to Jen in sleep, his face with concern written all over it.
‘I’m not doubting you dude, I mean fuck, she raves about you and how great you are so I know you guys are close. I’m just glad you were here, she needs as many people as she can that love her around her right now’ said Jim, with Dime nodding in agreement.
‘Look, I wanna arrange for flowers to be sent to Jules, and Carlo and Allegra too. You stay with the girls and I’ll be back soon’ said Dime, ever the thoughtful man and realizing he wanted to pay his respects to the family too. Jim nodded and went back to the couch, sitting next to Jen and wrapping an arm around her as she looked down to where Jade’s head was rested in her lap and stroked her hair. That day was just too sad for words, and they were just glad that when Jade awoke the numbness of the grieving process had kicked in; after what Dime had told him Jim really didn’t want to witness Jade losing it again. And she didn’t, but while she stood with the rest of her band by the edge of the stage just before Slipknot went on at 3pm that afternoon Jade did start to cry again. The sight of her nine friends with black bands around their arms over their red boiler suits as a mark of respect for Jamie’s passing touched her so greatly she was moved to tears, even more so when each of them stop to hug her and offer their condolences.
‘He was so fucking proud of you, don’t you ever forget that. You got your girls around you and you got nine of us to look out for you too. Hang on in there champ’ said Shaun, giving her a kiss on the cheek as he hugged her tightly. Since their chat they had become friends, and he was absolutely devastated for her, they all were after having witnessed with their own eyes just how close Jade and Jamie were. They even dedicated their set to the memory of Jamie DiMaggio too, just as Jade did when she got up on stage later that evening at 8pm.
‘This set, and everything I do in my life from now on is dedicated to the memory of my beloved uncle. Jamie DiMaggio, rest in peace, I love you’ she said into the microphone before they launched into the last song of the night, a cover of the song ‘Rotten Apple’ by Alice in Chains. It was one of Jamie’s all time favourite songs since he had been introduced to the band’s music via his niece many years ago, and it took Jade all the strength she had not to fall apart as she sang it, eventually sitting down on the edge of the stage and resting her head against the microphone stand as one thirtysomething woman in the front row reached out her hand, and Jade took it and held on tight all the way through the song. She had given her fans support through music for years, and the woman stood holding her hand wanted to give some back as she looked up at the girl she admired so much, tears streaming from her eyes as she sang the song perfectly note for note.
She closed her eyes and all she could see was Jamie smiling at her. Then, she heard the sound of another guitar and another voice and turned to see Dime taking the solo with Jo, and Phil singing along with her, her dear friends showing their unwavering support, and making for a brilliant closing number to their set. Phil walked on over and pulled her up, holding her hand as they both sang, and then enveloping her into a hug as their set drew to a close.
‘You’re one of the most goddamned strong people I know kid, and it was Jamie who taught you to have the grit you do, so keep strong for him. You know he wouldn’t want you to be sad, even though I know you really can’t help it right now’ said Phil as he continued to hug Jade, his girlfriend Kate nearby mouthing ‘Is she okay?’ to him. Phil made a wavy shake with his hand indicating she was so so, and Kate nodded.
‘Thanks Phil’ she whispered, pulling herself from his embrace and giving his arm a squeeze, then going and giving Kate a hug before walking off solemnly, cutting a lonely figure as she walked by herself down the hallway back to their bus.
‘Poor thing’ said Kate sadly, shaking her head as she held her boyfriends hand.
‘She’ll be okay, she just needs time’ said Phil, Kate nodding as they both went back into Pantera’s dressing room to fetch the last of their things and board their bus to leave with the convoy of 23 other busses carrying the bands onto the next leg of the Ozzfest tour. When Jade arrived at her bus she found a welcome surprise sat waiting for her in the lounge. Jim.
‘You didn’t think I was just going to get on my bus and party until Salt Lake City did you?’ he said when she asked why he was there.
‘I didn’t know if you’d had enough of being cried on already’ said Jade, sitting down next to him.
‘I want you to know this, and I want you to remember it for the rest of your life. For the ten months I’ve known you my admiration, respect, and love for you has only grown. I class you as one of my best friends and I am always, always going to be there for you. When this tour ends, I’m at the end of a phone whenever you need me, and there next to you whenever I can be, you hear me?’ said Jim, taking her face in his hands and stroking her cheeks with his thumbs. Jade nodded, then lent against him and did what she needed to do; get all the tears of grief she could out of her system.
He kept his promise to her, and was her rock along with the likes of her girls, Phil and Dime throughout the rest of the tour, even attending Jamie’s funeral with her in New Jersey. And when the tour drew to a close and they were all stood at the LAX airport in California, the state they had all first met in thirteen months ago saying goodbye to each other he more than proved his unwavering friendship. She had told him she still held much grief over Jamie’s passing two months ago, and he had offered her a solution to her problem of not wanting to go home to her big empty house just yet.
‘Go and change that plane ticket to a return to Iowa and come stay with me. My house is out in the middle of nowhere, all peaceful and quiet which is just what you need. But with someone there who wants to look after you. Come on dude, I really wanna help you out’ said Jim as he hugged her. Jade had no work planned for another two months until she and the girls went into the studio to write their fourth album, so agreed. It would be nice just to spend some time with her friend, and if she admitted it, it meant she didn’t have to kiss goodbye to the amazing sex they shared just yet either. But just over to the side of them, out of earshot of everyone else two people who had been keeping the real biggest secret of the tour stood holding each other, really not wanting to let go.
‘You know it would be different if it wasn’t for Michelle, you know that baby girl. You’d be mine now’ said Chris as he held a sobbing Jen in his arms. Unbeknown to everyone but themselves they had fallen in love with each other earlier in the tour, but the problem was that Chris had a girlfriend. And he couldn’t leave her either. Michelle had suffered a severe nervous breakdown and was in a rehabilitation centre so needed him more than anything, which meant he just couldn’t pack up and leave her for Jen, even though she was the woman his heart truly yearned for. He hadn’t been 100% happy with Michelle before she got sick, and now she was institutionalised indefinitely it made it even harder to leave her for Jen. Even though nothing had happened save a single kiss one drunken night between them, they both knew how they felt.
‘If that ever changes, you let me know straight away’ said Jen as she stroked his hair and wiped tears from her face.
‘You can’t wait for me sweetheart, I can’t make you do that’ said Chris, swallowing a lump in his throat.
‘But I will, I don’t care how long it takes, I will’ said Jen, looking around her to see everyone else occupied in goodbyes and stealing the moment to kiss him on the lips firmly but quickly, then literally run from his arms towards the boarding gate. Chris sighed and ran a hand over his brow, he couldn’t bear to turn around and see the girl he loved boarding a plane that would take her hundreds of miles away from him. He sighed, picked up his hand luggage and went over to his own boarding gate where his friends were waiting, also seeing another friend he didn’t expect t see waiting in the line.
‘Erm, JB. The boarding gate for Cali is over yonder’ said Chris, pointing back in the direction Jen had just run off in.
‘I know, but I’ll never get to Iowa that way! I’m coming back with you guys to chill out with the big man for a week’ said Jade, nodding her head backwards to Jim who was standing behind her.
‘And if they aren’t together by the end of the week I’ll be knocking some sense into the pair of them’ said Craig quietly to Shaun a little way down the line.
‘Come get me before you do, I’d like to be in on that too. Fuck knows something needs to happen for them to realize they’re perfect for each other’ said Shaun, looking back at the pair over his shoulder.
‘Its strange hearing you say that’ Craig then commented.
‘Well...................after a bit of a shaky start I have to admit I’ve grown pretty fond of the girl. She makes our jester happy too, see’ said Shaun as Craig turned to see Jade with her arms stretched back behind her around Jim’s neck, whatever it was she was telling him making him laugh. Craig nodded in agreement, and turned back to where the line of people in front of him began to walk forward towards the now open gate, Iowa bound.
