Carrie smiled as she saw Kelly leaning against the lockers, waiting for her as she walked out of her 6th period class.
"Hey," Kelly smiled back.
"I thought you were supposed to be out of suspension before lunch," Carrie commented. "What happened?"
"I know my friends," she shrugged. "They would've either lectured me about how stupid it was that I took the blame for it, or they would've made one joke after another about it, and it's been a long day, so I just wasn't in the mood."
"But you're in the mood to talk to me?"
"I know you won't give me crap if I ask you not to."
"Is that you asking?"
"Yea."
"Alright," Carrie nodded, walking beside her as they made their way to the choir room.
"So how were your classes?" Kelly asked as they walked into the room, placing their book bags down before going over to the piano where Kelly sat down.
"They were good," Carrie replied, watching as she began to pass over the keys almost subconsciously. "What is that?"
"I don't know," Kelly replied honestly, looking down at her fingers before looking back up at her.
Carrie laughed, "Anyway, yea, it was good. You did miss a quiz yesterday though in English. Sorry about that."
"I already said don't worry about it," Kelly reminded, continuing to play the instrument in front of her.
"I know. You didn't miss much in Chemistry. Yesterday, he wasn't there, so we got to finish watching Superstar," Carrie grinned. "It was great. I guess we're going to have to find something else for us to watch, though. Then today, he was there so we reviewed for the test tomorrow. Thankfully, you'll be back for that..." her voice trailed off as she looked down to where Kelly's hand was pressed against her stomach.
Kelly smiled.
"W-what?" Carrie asked, blushing.
"You're breathing from your stomach," Kelly's smile grew.
"Oh yea," she laughed. "I've kind of been practicing...if that doesn't make me sound like a complete nerd."
"It doesn't," Kelly shook her head, taking her hand back and going back to playing the piano. "That actually kinda made my day...if that doesn't make me sound like a complete nerd," she added with a teasing grin.
Carrie smiled, pushing her playfully, "Be quiet."
"So, test tomorrow in Chemistry?" Kelly questioned, earning a laugh from the other blonde as she started to play 'Chopsticks' on the piano.
"Yea, so much for only lab assignments, right?"
"Yea, what happened?"
"He had a fit saying there was no way in hell we could ever do the labs if we didn't even know the basics, so he would be testing us on them."
"What are we covering right now?"
"Um, you know isotopes and things like that."
Kelly nodded uncertainly.
Carrie smiled, sitting beside her on the piano bench, "Maybe you don't know. You want me to come over tonight so we can study?"
"I don't know," Kelly frowned. "My mom's still a little upset about the whole suspension thing. Maybe we should go to your place."
"I-I don't know. How about the library?"
Kelly eyed her curiously out of the corner of her eye, "You know what, don't worry about it. We'll just go to my place. It's no big deal. The library closes early anyway, and I have to work till seven."
"You sure?"
"Yea, it's fine," she nodded, afraid to ask the question, remembering where it got her the last time, but knowing she had to. "Carrie, are you ok?"
"Yea," she replied.
"You know if you need to talk..."
"I know," she gave the Texan a small smile before standing as Mrs. Glenn walked into the room.

"Ok," Carrie said as she lay on her stomach on Kelly's bed, her Chemistry book opened before her. "So, what is an isotope?"
"An element that has the normal number of protons, but a different number of neutrons in its nucleus," Kelly recited as she lay on her back beside the bed on the floor.
"Correct."
"Shouldn't I get something when I get one right?" Kelly asked, sitting up and placing her chin on the bed.
Carrie smiled as she turned her head to the side to bring them face to face, "Isn't the satisfaction of knowing that you are now intellectually capable enough?"
"No," she shook her head.
"Ok," Carrie laughed. "Then what should be your reward?"
"How about you tell me something about yourself," Kelly suggested. "Yea, every time I get a question right, you tell me something that I don't know about you, which is probably a lot. I mean, I'm always the one doing the talking, so what do you say?"
"Um, sure, ok."
"Good," Kelly smiled, laying back down. "Next question."
"Ok...what is a half-life of an isotope?"
"Um, the half-life of an isotope is...it's the amount of time it takes to...it's the amount of time it takes for half of the atoms to decay into a more stable form," Kelly smiled, looking up as Carrie poked her head over the side of the bed.
"Correct," she grinned, before moving back.
"So, what are you going to tell me?"
"What do you want to know?"
"Tell me about where you used to live."
"Well," Carrie began thoughtfully. "I lived in Oklahoma. Checotah, Oklahoma to be exact."
"Checotah?" Kelly giggled.
"Yea, and don't laugh. It was great there. It was a really small town. You know, kinda like here--everybody knew everybody. For the most part, people were real sweet. It's just...it was home, you know?"
"Yea."
"Ok, next question," Carrie said. "Um, what is the mass number of an element?"
"Uh, mass number is the sum of the number of electrons and neutrons," she replied surely.
"Nope."
"What do you mean nope?" Kelly asked, sitting up.
"It's actually the sum of the number of protons and neutrons," Carrie explained.
"But, doesn't the number of protons equal the number of electrons?" she countered. "So, basically it's the same thing in the end."
"Yes, except for when you have an ion because ions are elements that--"
"That have gained or lost an electron blah blah," Kelly rolled her eyes before groaning. "Damn it," she cursed, laying back down.
"Don't get frustrated. You're gonna do great on the test. I mean, you know most of the stuff," Carrie assured her. "So, my turn?"
"Your turn?"
"Yea, you get one right, I say something about myself. You get one wrong, you say something about yourself."
"I don't remember agreeing to that."
"That's because I just made it up," Carrie pointed out.
"Alright," Kelly laughed. "Go ahead."
"When we met, you said something about moving around a lot...where all you've been?"
"Um, well, I was born in the Fort Worth area. That's where we lived for a few years before we moved to California."
"Why California?"
"My dad had a job offer there," Kelly replied, her voice holding the slightest edge. "Then when my parents split up, we moved back to Texas to Llano, Texas. It was fun there. We lived in this like little neighborhood with a bunch of kids. Then we moved here, to Burleson, when I was in the fourth grade? Yea, the fourth grade."
"Was it a far move?"
"How many questions do you get?" Kelly asked with a smile.
"But, we're almost done, and I seriously doubt you're going to get any more wrong. You know this stuff, Kelly."
"It depends what you consider far," Kelly shrugged. "I mean is it Texas to California or Oklahoma to here far? No, it's probably only about a three hour drive, but I mean to a nine year old, three hours away from all your friends...that's pretty far."
"Yea," Carrie nodded. "Ok, back to studying."
"I thought you said I knew it?"
"Yea, but if there's a question on the test that we didn't go over, I don't want you to come fussing at me," she smiled.
"Alright, lay it on me."

Carrie giggled as she listened to Kelly's soft breathing, knowing without even looking that she had fallen asleep in the middle of class as she had so many times before. She looked out the corner of her eye, and sure enough, Kelly was in her 'sleeping position'. She would rest her head on one of her hands, pretending to be looking down at the book on the desk, but really she was out like a light.
Carrie looked up as the Chemistry teacher walked around the room, returning the test from two days before.
"Kelly," she whispered, trying to get the shorter girl's attention. "Kelly."
Kelly mumbled something about five more minutes.
"Kelly," Carrie repeated, nudging her elbow that was resting on the table, holding her head up.
Kelly's arm slipped, causing her forehead to fall straight onto the desk, "Shit!"
Carrie winced as all eyes turned to them.
"Kelly?" the teacher asked, looking at her curiously. "Is everything ok?"
"Y-yes sir," she nodded, rubbing her forehead, her eyes still cloudy from sleep.
"Ok then," he nodded, going back to handing out the test papers.
"What the hell?" Kelly hissed, turning to Carrie.
Carrie tried not to giggle at the red mark on her forehead.
"It's not funny, that hurt."
"Well, he was walking around, I didn't want him to catch you sleeping."
Kelly sighed, her agitation dissolving, "Thanks."
"Are you ok?" Carrie asked, reaching up to softly touch her forehead. "That really sounded like it hurt."
"It stings," Kelly replied, staying perfectly still as Carrie grazed the red mark gently with her thumb.
"Sorry," she smiled sheepishly, touching her cheek briefly before pulling away.
"It's fine," Kelly shook her head. "Don't worry about it."
Carrie nodded as the teacher placed both of their test papers on their table, "You ready?"
"You go first," Kelly took a nervous breath.
Carrie flipped her paper over and smiled, "B+."
Kelly let out a slow breath as she held her test in her hands. She pushed it towards Carrie, "You do it."
"You sure?"
"Yea."
"Alright," Carrie nodded, flipping over the paper. "You little..."
"What?" Kelly asked worriedly.
"You did better than me," Carrie grinned, handing her the test. "You got an A."
"Shoot," Kelly laughed, looking at the paper in her hands. "I should think about doing this studying thing more often."
