Ashley shook her head, rolling her eyes, "Don't forget you have interviews."
"Dude, I just rocked out with Joe Perry...give me a moment to celebrate," Kelly laughed.
"Ready?" Jason asked, grinning.
Kelly and Kate both nodded as they sat in the swivel chairs, each with a hand on the makeup counter before them.
"Ok, whoever can spin the fastest wins," Jill reminded.
"Three..." Jason began to count down. "Two...One!"
Kelly and Kate each pushed off on the counter top, spinning in the chairs as fast as they could.
"Hm...I think Kate has it," Jill watched them carefully.
"No!" Kelly protested, spinning herself faster.
Jason laughed.
"No way to make her try harder than to tell her she's losing," Ashley couldn't help but chuckle.
"Ah, shit!" Kelly exclaimed when she pushed herself off too hard, her chair rolling backwards across the dressing room.
Jason quickly moved out of the way, causing Kelly's chair to run into the wall.
"Are you ok?" Kate quickly stopped her chair, stumbling when she tried to stand.
Jill steadied her, helping her over to Kelly who was rubbing the back of her head.
Jason placed a hand against her hair to make sure she wasn't bleeding.
There was a knock on the door, with a soft giggle, "Um...am I interrupting something?"
Kelly looked up disoriented, smiling, "Hey."
"Hey," Carrie smiled back, walking over to her.
Jason, Jill, and Kate quickly moved out of the way, watching in a slight awe.
"Having fun?"
"I was just on stage with Joe Perry," Kelly grinned.
"Yea," Carrie nodded. "I saw. You really rocked out. It was great."
"Aw, thanks," she stood up shakily.
"Are you ok?"
"Just a little dizzy. So, what's up girl? I know you didn't come in here just to tell me how amazing I am," Kelly teased.
Carrie laughed softly, "No, um, actually...I wanted to apologize."
"Apologize?"
"Yea, I honestly had no idea Clive was gonna pull that tonight. I mean, I heard rumors that y'all were butting heads a bit, but I didn't expect him to go there on live t.v."
"Go where?" Kelly asked, confused.
"You didn't hear his speech?"
"No," she shook her head. "I've been back stage doing interviews and stuff the whole time. What happened?"
"Oh, uh...I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said anything," Carrie shook her head. "You were probably better off not knowing. It's just that everybody's been kinda talking about it backstage, and I felt so bad about it. I didn't know he was gonna do that."
"What did he do?"
"Well, he was giving me my plaque for my album going six times platinum and he made this huge deal about how the only reason we are as successful as we are is because of the professional song writers..."
Kelly nodded, frowning, "Of course he did."
"I'm sorry, Kelly."
"It's not your fault," Kelly assured, offering a smile. "And congrats on the plaque. You deserve it."
"Yea, you should be careful," she joked. "I might pass you up."
"You already did."
"No, I didn't."
"Breakaway's only five times platinum in the U.S."
"What?" Carrie's eyes widened. "That's not...are you sure?"
"Yea, why?"
"That doesn't make any sense. It's sold more than my album. Why would they give me my plaque, but not give you yours?"
"Are you sure?"
"Yea, I'm only at about five and a quarter. You're just under six, right?"
"Oh, hunny, I have no clue," Kelly shook her head.
"Well, you are," Carrie replied. "That's so messed up...I'm sorry."
"Again, it's not your fault," Kelly assured.
"Maybe I should get going before I kill any more of your performance high," Carrie frowned.
"You sure?"
"Yea, I've got some interviews to get ready for," she nodded, giving her a hug. "It was great seeing you again."
"Yea, you too."
"Tell your mom I said hi?"
"She was actually asking about you when I called her earlier. She was so cute. She asked if I was going to be seeing that country girl tonight because she was such a sweetheart for the Thanksgiving Day game."
Carrie smiled, "Your mom reminds me so much of my mom, it's freaky. But yea, I've got to get going. Give me a call if ever y'all are in Nashville and we can do something, ok?"
"Of course," Kelly nodded, hugging her again. "And seriously, no worries, ok?"
"Ok," Carrie smiled, waving at the others before walking out of the room.
"Looks like you were right not to trust Clive," Ashley commented.
"I feel like I'm back in middle school with all this drama," Kelly rolled her eyes, sighing as she sat back down in her chair.

"What about Carrie?" Kate asked as she rode with Kelly to the restaurant the band was meeting at after the Idol finale.
"What about her?"
"Did you ever date her?"
"What?" Kelly snorted with laughter. "Me? Date Carrie Underwood? Right..."
"Sorry," Kate blushed. "You just seem like good friends...she knows your mom."
"Hun, Carrie is straighter than an arrow. I met her for the first time last year...at Clive's party actually. And then this past Thanksgiving we both sang at the Cowboys game, and we shared a box. Both of our moms were there--that's how she knows my mom. It was fun getting to know her a little better. It's crazy how similar our life stories are."
"Would you ever?"
"Ever what?"
"Date her? Like, if she wasn't straighter than an arrow?"
"No," Kelly shook her head. "Never."
"Really? I mean, she's cute."
"She's a beautiful girl," Kelly agreed. "And she is really sweet once she gets over the shyness, but she is so not my type."
"No?"
"Yea, like I said, she's sweet, but poor baby, the girl tries way too hard."
"Tries at what?"
"Everything. She cares too much about what people think. Like what she wears, and how much she weighs...the girl knows my sales better than I do."
"Most people would call that conceited."
Kelly shook her head, "Then those people don't know her. It's quite the opposite. Her self-confidence is like zero."
"That sucks."
"Yea, and while I love having her as a friend in the industry, I could never date someone like that."
Kate nodded.
"Guess it's a good thing for you that you're not like that, huh?" she grinned.
Kate laughed softly, "Guess so. I'd hate to have to miss out on the amazingness that is sitting next to me."
"It would be such a shame," Kelly agreed, turning into the parking lot. "Here we are."
"So, um, are you ok?"
"Yea, of course. Why wouldn't I be?"
"The Clive thing..."
Kelly shook her head, "I so don't have the energy to deal with something as immature as that. Let's just go have fun, ok?"
"Don't need to tell me twice," Kate smiled as they got out of the vehicle.

"Hey," Kelly bounced beside Kate and Ashley. "What are you doing?"
"Nothing," Ashley answered, reaching out to fix a stray curl on the short Texan. "It sounded good."
"Yea, these session things are fun," Kelly nodded. "But I wasn't talking to you."
Ashley scoffed, feigning hurt as Kelly turned to Kate.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm stuck," Kate pointed out as she tried to get the mic pack from off of her jeans.
Kelly smiled, "I'll help."
"Of course," Ashley smirked, trying not to laugh as she watched her best friend take way longer than necessary to remove the mic pack from the back of Kate's jeans.
"What?" she grinned innocently as Ashley gave her a warning look.
"You are something else," Ashley shook her head as Kelly handed the mic pack to a sound guy.
"Thanks," Kate smiled, turning back to them.
"Where's Jill?" Kelly asked curiously.
Kate pointed to where Jill was standing off to the side, texting someone with a huge smile on her face.
"Meghan?"
"Yep," Kate nodded.
Kelly laughed, "Nice. So what are y'all doing for your week off?"
"I don't think we've decided yet," she admitted.
"Come to Texas."
"Yea?"
"Yea, I just got this new house. Y'all can help me fill it up."
"So, you're putting us to work on our vacation?" Kate raised an eyebrow.
"Free food and a pool..."
"I'm in," Kate nodded.
"Awesome," Kelly smiled broadly. "Why don't you go ask Jill?"
"Ok," she turned, walking towards the other backup singer.
"You love making things hard on yourself, don't you?" Ashley laughed lightly.
Kelly shrugged, "I think it'll be fun."
"You know, I would love to know what's really going on in your mind."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, you're always saying that it's just fun because nothing's ever gonna happen, but I'm starting to wonder if deep down you think that something could actually, possibly happen."
"Never say never," Kelly shrugged.
"Kelly..."
"I'm just joking," she pushed her playfully. "I think we've already discussed this...even if something could happen, I could never get a girl like her."
"Why do you say that?"
Kelly shrugged again, watching as Kate talked to Jill.
"What if you could get a girl like her?"
"Nothing can happen between us," Kelly reminded.
Ashley nodded.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"No, I know that face. You've got something on your mind. So, what?"
"I just...I'm worried that the only reason that nothing can happen is because you say it can't, and that the only reason you couldn't get someone like her is because you think that you couldn't--it's all in your head."
"I don't get it."
Ashley shook her head.
"Why does that worry you, though?"
"What happens when you realize that you're wrong?" Ashley looked at her.
Kelly frowned, feeling Ashley pat her shoulder before walking away as she watched Kate laugh at something she was reading on Jill's phone.
+++++++++
Kelly laughed softly as she watched Jill in the mirror of her visor.
"Hush," Jill replied from the back seat.
"Are you texting Meghan again?"
"Maybe."
"Yes," Kate corrected as she sat in the back as well, directly behind Kelly.
"You know...you're welcome to invite her out here," Kelly offered.
"I don't know," Jill shook her head. "She's really busy with work right now."
"Ask her," Ashley instructed, pulling the car to a stop in front of the Texan home. "Let her decide if she's busy or not...never assume."
"I'll ask her later," Jill closed her phone.
"You're nervous," Kate teased, pushing her playfully.
"Remind me why I'm best friends with you."
"Because you love me," Kate grinned.
"And I'll never understand why," Jill shook her head, laughing.
"See," Kelly nudged Ashley. "We're not the only dysfunctional ones."
"At least Kate knows how to put on make up," Ashley replied.
Kelly laughed, getting out the car, "Yea, yea."
Kate started to open her door as well, but Kelly quickly reached out, closing it.
"Wait," Kelly held a hand up, turning looking for something.
Kate watched a huge grin form on the Texan's face, and she followed her gaze to find three full grown dogs running for her, full-speed.
Kelly bent down, laughing when the dogs nearly bowled her over as they tried all tried to lick her face at once, "Aw...I missed y'all too."
Kate cautiously got out of the back seat, "Excited much?"
"Nah, they just know their mommy."
Kate laughed, reaching a hand out, "Can I? I mean, will they..."
"Oh, no, they don't bite," Kelly shook her head, smiling as Kate started to pet one of the dogs.
"They're sweet," Kate offered her other hand, helping Kelly up.
"They're great," Kelly nodded.
"What's their names?"
"Oh, that's Baby, and that's Beuller, and that girl you got there is Pumkin. Don't feel special that she's licking your hand. She's a whore."
Kate laughed, "Pumkin? Like from that Flavor Flav show?"
Kelly rolled her eyes, "That's what happens when you let Ashley name a dog."
"Hey, the name fits," Ashley laughed as she started pulling bags from the back of the vehicle.
"Come on let's go," Kelly smiled, walking towards the house. "I'll give y'all the grand tour."
"Holy..." Jill's jaw dropped as they walked into the home.
Kate nodded in agreement.
Kelly giggled softly, taking Kate's hand, "Come on, y'all gotta see this."
Kate smiled, loving that Kelly was so excited to be back home. They left their bags at the bottom of the stairs as Kelly led them up to one of the rooms on the second floor. "Look out the window."
"Wow," Kate breathed in awe as she looked out at all the land before them. "How much of this is yours?"
"Pretty much everything you can see," Kelly smiled, ducking under her arm so she could see as well.
Kate laughed, wrapping her arm around her.
"It's really beautiful," Jill nodded. "What all do you do out here?"
"Anything we want," Kelly replied with a grin. "No grown ups to tell us otherwise."
Jill laughed, "Nice."
"So, yea, no grown ups, so there's not really any rules, but there is one thing I ask," Kelly turned to them, almost apologetically. "Can y'all not come in here again?"
Jill and Kate both looked around curiously.
"It's my office," Kelly explained. "And I mean, I promise I won't like freak out if y'all do come in here; it's just that it may not look very organized, but I know exactly where everything is if I need to find something. I also come in here to write a lot, and if I get interrupted, the idea goes right out the window."
"Yea, no problem," Jill nodded as they walked back out of the room.
"So, I thought you said you just bought this place," Kate turned to Kelly. "Looks pretty furnished to me."
"Um, no, not this place. Another place not too far from here."
"You bought another house?"
"Well, I bought the property, and the house was on it," she shrugged.
"Are you trying to buy all of Texas?" Jill teased.
"No, I just don't want people I don't know buying the land, or people using it to like build subdivisions or something, you know? I like having my place to escape to."
"So, you just decided to buy the house?" Kate asked.
"It was pretty old," Kelly explained. "So it really didn't cost that much. Then I fixed it up a bit, and updated everything inside of it so it's good as new."
"And what do you need our help with?" Jill questioned as they followed Kelly down the stairs.
"Shopping," Kelly smiled. "It's gonna be my music house. We're gonna go buy a bunch of equipment and stuff tomorrow."
"Sounds awesome."
"Yea, I had been talking about it, and Ashley said now would be a good time because she thinks I need a distraction from all the mess with the album."
"Well then, we're you're girls," Kate smiled.
Kelly took her hand again, "Come on, I'll show y'all the spare bedrooms. Y'all can choose which ones y'all want."
"So I don't have to share a room with her?" Jill asked, pointing at Kate. "Heaven."
Kate pushed her playfully, lacing the fingers of her other hand with Kelly's.
+++++++++++
Kelly smiled as Kate bounced down next to her on the sofa, placing her legs over the Texan's lap, facing her, "All settled in?"
"Yea, you're glad to be home?"
"Definitely," she nodded as she took Kate's hand.
Kate smiled, watching as the Texan traced a soft circle into her palm with her finger, "So what's the plans?"
"To wing it. I don't like schedules when I'm home."
"That makes sense," she nodded.
"I told my friends I wouldn't be back until tomorrow," Kelly admitted with a slight grin.
"Why'd you do that?"
"You remember what it was like for my birthday? I just want a nice afternoon to just be lazy and enjoy being home. That's probably totally selfish of me, right?"
"Nah, everyone needs some times to themselves to just breathe. I imagine that's way harder for you to come by than it is for most people."
"It's not like I'm complaining," Kelly quickly replied.
"No, I know," Kate assured. "But an afternoon to yourself to just enjoy being home...that's hardly too much to ask."
Kelly smiled, "I like you."
"Yea?" she giggled.
"You've always just...you get it," Kelly nodded.
"I'm just observant."
"Oh yea? What else have you observed?" Kelly looked up at her with a playful smile.
"That you're not nearly as cocky as you make yourself out to be."
Kelly laughed softly, "Or maybe that's just all part of my plan."
"And what plan might that be?"
"The 'get you in my bed' plan," she wiggled her eyebrows, making her laugh. "Maybe I really am that cocky, but I just act vulnerable at times. Girls love someone with a sensitive side, right?"
"Or maybe," Kate leaned in closer. "You really are vulnerable, and you're just too scared to admit that."
Kelly snorted with forced laughter as she looked back down at Kate's hand.
"Why are you scared?" Kate asked curiously.
"I believe we've already discussed the screwy situation that we're in."
"And that means you can't be vulnerable around me?"
Kelly shook her head, "Vulnerable...to let my guard down right?"
Kate nodded.
"If I let my guard down...if I dropped the pretenses, and just let myself be with you..." she smiled softly, looking back at her. "I wouldn't be able to be like this with you."
"How would you be?"
Kelly let out a light sigh, her eyes traveling to Kate's lips, "I'd be kissing you...slowly...holding you close...laying you back on the sofa..."
Kate found it hard to breathe when Kelly's eyes met hers once more.
"That's how I would be," she offered an apologetic smile, shaking her head again. "I can't be vulnerable with you."
"Kelly wait," Kate protested as Kelly gently moved her legs off of her before standing.
"I should go find Jason," Kelly slid her hands into her jean pockets. "I need to talk to him about some stuff for the property. Why don't you have a look around the place? It's really nice."
Kate nodded, knowing that the conversation was over, so there was no point of pushing it, "Sure."
