Die made a thoughtful face, typing away at his laptop. Once he got the numbers for this order in check, he would be finished. Needless to say, the older male was thankful to have a job that he could work from home with. With the last bit of his task finished, he logged out and shut the lid of his laptop.
Kyo was napping on the couch, looking peaceful enough to Die. At first, the boy had been talking to him and watching television. After a certain point, though, Kyo had dozed off and Die had just gone about finishing his work. It was close to time for Die to make Kyo a snack, however. He got up from the chair and headed to the kitchen to rummage through their new stock of food. It was very strange to see practically nothing but health foods, but it wasn’t unwelcome.
The main part of this new diet was that everything was broken into small meals. This would help Kyo regulate his weight and blood sugar; according to the pamphlet they had been given. Die picked up an apple and started slicing it into pieces that he placed into a small bowl before snagging a container of yogurt and a spoon. “Kyo?” he said, trying not to be too loud and jar the kid from his slumber too roughly. “You have to eat again.”
Mumbling in his sleep, Kyo yawned and rubbed his eyes. Looking up from his spot where he was curled up on the couch, he blinked to clear the fuzziness from his eyes. Kyo was starting to get used to the eating schedule, his stomach rumbling softly as he put his hand on his growing belly. “Really? Already?” He couldn’t believe time had passed so fast, but taking a look at the clock showed that it was, in fact, time for his snack.
“Yeah,” Die said, placing the bowl and container of yogurt on the coffee table. “I’ll get you a drink if you want one.” Die pointed back at the kitchen doorway, waiting for Kyo to answer. Kyo’s drink options were fairly limited. The boy could have as much water as he wanted, but other than that, he could have only one hundred percent fruit juice and reduced-fat milk. Die would cry if that was all he was permitted to drink. He was all behind the idea of supporting Kyo, but there was a certain fatherly comfort in knowing that he was just for support in that aspect.
“Okay… Juice please?” He moved to sit up, crossing his legs and reaching out to take the bowl of apple slices and the yogurt and spoon. Placing the bowl in his lap, he pulled back the seal and dipped his spoon in the substance. Kyo was never really fond of yogurt, but it seemed like he had to get used to it. Pulling the spoon out, he examined the jiggly substance before bringing it to his mouth and eating it. It didn’t taste that bad, so he set to finishing it off before eating the apple slices.
Die went back to the kitchen to get some juice for Kyo. He grabbed a glass from the cabinet and placed it on the counter while he looked into the refrigerator to find the other some juice. Pulling out the container, Die poured the glass full of apple juice and then placed the container back in the refrigerator. “Here you go,” the taller redhead said, going back to Kyo and placing the glass down.
“Thank you.” Kyo smiled, picking up an apple slice and biting into it. He sighed after swallowing his mouthful of apple before taking a drink. “This is kind of a hassle at times… I can only eat certain things, and only at certain times, and I’m really limited on what I can drink…” The smaller redhead shook his head before taking up another slice of apple and eating it.
“I know,” Die said, settling on the couch and scooting close to Kyo. “At least it’s for a good reason. Hopefully, the baby will be born and your diabetes will clear up. I wonder if it’s going to be a health nut when it hits the teenage years, though.” That thought made Die want to smile and cringe all at once. He didn’t know if he could handle some little kid running around and advising them on their eating habits.
“Hm, maybe.” Kyo chuckled softly and leaned against Die, finishing off his apple slices. Taking up his glass, he started drinking the juice. Setting the glass back down, he sighed before their conversation was interrupted by the ringing of his cell phone. “That’s mine…” Kyo stood from the couch and flipped open his phone and put it to his ear. “Hello?”
“Tooru? Is that you?” Kyo’s mother said, fairly certain that it was her son on the other line. She would have thought that the boy would have come home by then, but he had done nothing of the sort. She still recalled their last meeting in the store, however, she wasn’t discouraged. Even if it took forever, she would find a way to get the boy back home where he belonged.
“Ma-… Mama?” Kyo choked out after finding his voice. There were only a few people that knew his real name. “What… do you want?” Kyo asked slowly, his head turning to look to the living room before moving to the door and turning around. Taking a seat on the bed, he clutched the phone close and bit his lip, holding in his breath to listen for any noise on the other line.
“We want you to come home.” The boy’s father was less than eager to have his son back under the same roof as him, but his mother couldn’t help it. She just wanted her son home and not pregnant with some person’s baby. “Are you still pregnant?”
“Yes, I’m still pregnant… I’m not getting rid of it either. I am home. This is my home now; I’m not going back there.” Kyo spoke clearly, trying hard not to scream at her or break down. Why wouldn’t they just leave him alone? He didn’t want to go back, not one bit. This was his home; this was where he was going to stay, no matter how bad she wanted him to come home.
When Kyo left the living room, Die caught hint of anxiety coming from the smaller male. Not wanting to eavesdrop, but unable to resist his urge to watch out for Kyo, the taller male hesitated outside of the bedroom door. The strained, upset tone in the other’s voice made Die go into the room, feeling distressed as well. “Is that your father or your mother?” The last thing Kyo needed was stress from either of them. Shit like that could easily screw so much up for Kyo and the baby.
Gasping and clutching the phone to his chest, he looked up at Die. “Um…” He didn’t know how to tell Die, but he felt that maybe he could handle this on his own. The boy was tense already, but with Die entering the room like that surprised him.
“It is, isn’t it?” Die said with a groan. Frowning, he pushed his hands into his pocket and looked down at the carpet lining the bedroom floor, feeling exasperated. “I swear to God, if they start shit…” Die practically mouthed the words, but the expression on Kyo’s face illustrated that he understood. The taller male was willing to let Kyo have a chance to solve things peacefully, but the suspicion that it would end up otherwise felt strong to Die.
Kyo nodded, slowly pulling the phone back to his ear after hearing his mother speaking on the line. “Mama… I’m staying with Die… He’s taking better care of me than what you and dad ever did. I’m not going back there.” He said finally, making his statement final. There was no changing his mind, no matter how much pleading or demanding his mother did.
“Tooru, I promise that if you don’t get yourself out of that place and come home without any trouble, your father is going to bring you home whether you want to or not,” Kyo’s mother threatened, voice tense. “If he has to do that, he is going to make things miserable for you. Just give this up and come home.”
“No, Mom! This is my home, I won’t leave and you can tell that asshole of a father that I’m not leaving!” Kyo shouted into the phone, his voice shaking slightly as he gripped the phone tighter. Kyo should have known that it wouldn’t go easy, but he was a fool and tried.
Die had stepped out of the room to let Kyo carry on the conversation without having to worry about his presence hanging over him visibly, but he had been listening and waiting, should things go wrong. Die would be damned if that outburst hadn’t sounded wrong to him. Turning and going back into the bedroom, he extended his hand to Kyo, silently asking for the phone to be passed over. “I’m putting an end to this, Kyo. This is getting ridiculous,” he said, trying to control his temper.
Giving the redhead the phone, he curled up on the bed, watching Die carefully. His mother said she would have his father come get him, and when she said she would tell him, she did. The boy knew that his father would most likely come and get him as well. That thought made Kyo shudder, seeing his father again would be the worst, and he was sure that he would make things more miserable like his mother said.
“Tooru? Tooru, answer me,” Kyo’s mother demanded, becoming frustrated. Had all of this trouble just been lurking in her son to start with? Had it just been waiting until a certain point to make itself known? It certainly seemed to be that way.
“No, you are not talking to him again,” Die said to the woman, turning his back to Kyo for a moment. “I don’t know if you are just stupid or if you are deliberately trying to cause trouble, but I will not have you screwing around with my family. You and your husband refuse to give him peace and it makes him practically physically ill every time,” the redhead fumed, exhaling roughly and trying to keep himself in check. “Leave him alone. You are not going to hurt what is mine.”
Not giving the woman a chance to protest, Die hung up. He snapped the phone closed and held it in his hand, taking care not to do anything drastic, like squeeze it too hard or toss it at the wall. “Kyo, I don’t know what else to do about them. We’re going to get a restraining order against them; at least until the baby is born. You’re not going to get hurt because of them.”
“Okay…” Kyo sniffled softly and curled up tighter, tucking his head in his arms and gave a shaky sigh. “I just know that if we don’t get it soon, my dad will come after me like my mother said… I really don’t want to see him again, please don’t let him in if he does come.” His voice was quiet and unsteady as he spoke. It was apparent that his father was the root of his misery.
“We’ll go and get this done and I promise that I’ll take care of you,” Die promised, settling next to Kyo on the bed. The older male placed a hand on Kyo’s shoulder and squeezed gently, trying to prevent the round of tears that might just result from this event. “They aren’t going to touch you.”
“Thanks Die…” Kyo sniffled and uncurled from his tight ball and moved to hug Die tight. With Die around and knowing that the other did care for him, it made him feel much better. Normally, he’d be in tears by now, but with Die here, he had a pillar to lean on and be strong.
The older male wrapped his arms around Kyo, tugging the smaller redhead into his lap. Seeking out the boy’s cheek, Die pressed a kiss there. “It’s what I’m here for,” he reassured. Really, that was his purpose, and it would stay that way. He was supposed to take care of Kyo. “Hey,” he said, hoping to cheer Kyo up a little. “Guess what will happen soon?”
“What?” The smaller redhead asked, slightly confused as he looked up at the taller male. His eyes were slightly red from holding back tears, but there were light tracks from the corner of his eyes from ones that managed to escape. Kyo sighed, nuzzling up to Die and tucking his head under his chin.
“At your next ultrasound, we get to figure out what you’re having.” Die cradled the other and secured the boy where he sat in his lap. “We’ll know if we’re going to have a baby boy or girl. What do you want?” Die was trying to at least take Kyo’s mind away from the current issue a little bit.
“Um… I don’t know… A girl?” Kyo shrugged, not caring what they had; he just knew he’d love the thing regardless of gender. Kyo sighed, hugging Die tightly. “I just hope mama and dad just leave me alone until the baby is born.” He nuzzled up to Die more, holding him close.
“They’re going to,” Die promised, hugging the smaller male. He was going to make certain that neither of Kyo’s parents would be able to bother them. Die was providing the boy with a stable, safe environment and filling all of his needs. Bragging unintended, the redhead felt that he had stepped up to the plate nicely where that whole situation was concerned. Easily, he could have just ignored Kyo and the responsibility of parenthood, but that would have been too wrong to do. Luckily for Die, Kyo was making things easy enough, a few unavoidable problems aside.
“… What gender are you looking forward to?” Kyo asked, trying to change the subject at hand. He looked up at Die, his eyes still slightly puffy and his nose sniffling slightly. The boy wanted nothing more than to just forget everything and just be with Die. He didn’t want any stress from family, work, his own body, nothing.
“I’m not really sure,” Die said, speaking honestly. “I don’t know if I could choose. A boy, I guess, because it’s familiar. I don’t know if I could handle some little boy trying to date my daughter if we have a girl.” Die laughed a little. It would be a bit ironic for him to wind up with a girl and end up being the world’s most protective father. “I’ll just be happy when it gets here.”
“I’d be happy with whatever we get. I guess we should just do what your mom said and enjoy it while we can. It feels nice that I’m always close to someone, even when I’m alone. I’m not truly alone and I find comfort in that.” Kyo admitted as he rested his head on Die’s chest once more, curling close to Die.
“I’ll be glad when it starts kicking. Not because it will be kicking you, but I’ll finally be in the loop. It sucks being on the outside.” Die smiled, rubbing his hand on Kyo’s back. “I would take your aches and nausea if it would help.” The taller male chuckled, feeling empathy for the boy.
“Thanks… Hey, Die? Can you um… Give me a foot and shoulder massage? My feet are starting to hurt and my shoulders are tense.” He pulled away enough to give Die a pleading look. Kyo knew that Die couldn’t resist the look.
“You’re entitled,” the older male said, jokingly, “Turn around.” When Kyo complied, Die pulled the fabric of the boy’s shirt up and eventually worked him out of it, preferring to have the majority of the skin open to be touched. His hands found purchase on the smaller redhead’s shoulders and rubbed firmly, but not so hard that he would harm him.
Meticulously, Die massaged at the smaller male and eventually found himself rubbing the bare expanse of Kyo’s back and sides. When his fingertips strayed too far, he could feel the swell of the boy’s stomach and it made him smile. Maybe they should invest in some lotion to help with the stretching of Kyo’s skin. Die was pretty sure that the kid would appreciate that.
Feeling Die’s hand close to his stomach, he placed his own hand over it and pulled it around to rest on the swell of his stomach. He leaned back against Die, closing his eyes and sighing, knowing that it was now or never. “Die…” Kyo hesitated; wanting to make sure he had the redhead’s undivided attention.
“Yeah?” Die didn’t like that tone. When someone said your name like that, they usually had bad news to place in your lap. Was Kyo having second thoughts? Had he done something wrong? The redhead’s fingers shifted against Kyo’s belly beneath the slight pressure of the boy’s hand.
Taking in a deep breath, he let it out in a sigh, closing his eyes and gathering his thoughts before opening his mouth to speak. “I… I think…” He bowed his head slightly before taking in another deep breath. “I think I love you…” Kyo was certain of what he was thinking, and he had been sorting his thoughts out about it for a long time, and he was ready to say it now.
Die was quiet for a moment, taking that in. He wasn’t sure what exactly had just happened. In spite of that, he felt his pulse kick up a notch and he swallowed, trying to think of what to say, what would be appropriate to say. To come out and say for sure that he was in love with Kyo might not be a fair thing to do, but it would have been even more unfair to lie and cheat the two of them. “I think I love you, too,” Die said, trying to sound just as sure as Kyo had.
Giving a nervous smile, Kyo released the other’s hand and patted his arm before sitting forward again, giving a happy sigh this time. “Thanks…” He didn’t know why he was thanking the redhead, but he felt it should be said. Kyo felt loved for once and it was the most amazing thing ever.
“You don’t have to thank me,” Die said, smiling and trying to sound reassuring. The last thing he wanted was for Kyo to feel awkward about saying something like that. It was a natural emotion and an easy enough one to let grow, if given the proper chance. “Come on, give me your feet.” Die laughed, a pleased feeling gradually settling into him and making him feel warm.
Giving a bright smile, Kyo turned around and leaned back against a pillow on the bed. He sighed softly, no longer having that tense feeling of not letting his feelings out. Kyo felt warm and comforted now with Die, something he never had with his parents. This was something he’d never give up, not even for the world. He felt loved, had a nice home, and someone who cared for him and took care of him.
Taking hold of one of Kyo’s feet, Die started rubbing at the arch before working his way higher. As he worked, Die noticed that the boy seemed to be much more relaxed. That was good; the less stress Kyo felt, the better everything would be. Switching to the other foot, the older male paid the appendage equal attention, focusing on the task.
It wasn’t long before the soothing sensation put Kyo to sleep. He didn’t seem to have a whole lot of energy today, leading him to take more frequent naps than normal. His diabetes wasn’t bothering him, however, today was just a sleepy day for him. Giving a soft sigh in his sleep, he shifted slightly and placed his hand on his growing stomach.
