Chapter 18: New Years Eve Part 2
"All you really have to do is feel the rhythm. Just stop thinking about what the next chord is and just flow." Andy told Alex and she started to strum the guitar and then hit it gently. Alex smiled and repeated her actions.
"You just gotta loosen up, that's all. You keep your head down a lot when you're playing. I've seen it. Try to jam out some more raise your head up a little bit more. The fans wanna see your face." She told him and he laughed.
"I've seen The Heartless video and you're an amazing guitarist. But you kept your head down the entire video. Minus the part where you swing your guitar around."
"Holy shit that video! Our first one!" He said with a laugh.
"There's a look that Lynn does and I just melt. Like, fuck!"
They both laughed and Lynn looked over at them and smiled. She was talking to Angel and Brian about their wedding plans. Angel asked Lynn to be her maid of honor and of course Lynn accepted without a second thought. She turned her attention back to her friends and they continued to talk about the wedding.
David and Ethan walked over to Alex and Andy, "So are you nervous?" David asked sitting down next to her and she nodded.
"How are you going to ask?" Alex asked.
Andy shrugged, "Wait until there's about thirty or fifteen seconds left and I guess just ask. When I asked the others to be my girlfriends there were nerves. But this is different, every time I think about it my heart starts to pound, my hands get clammily and my stomach gets in knots and the butterflies seem to multiply. I don't know why."
David smiled and put a hand on her shoulder, "That my friend, is a good sign. Just stay calm and say the words you want to say."
"Yeah, but the question is how do I say it? Do I say, 'Be my girlfriend?' or 'Let's make this official.' Or 'Be mine?' Like, how do I ask? That's the only thing that's stopping me." She shook her head and strummed the guitar.
"Well, how ever you say it she's going to say yes," Alex said looking at his fingers on the neck of the guitar. Andy looked at him with a confused look.
He looked back at her and let out a small chuckle, "When we were in Europe and you didn't contact her for a while, she was wreck. She wanted to make sure you were okay. We were scared she was going to hop on a plane to get to you and we would have to postpone some dates. But she didn't do that. Then, when you finally contacted her she was over the moon.
Andy you given her so much joy in the past couple of months that I'm starting to see the sparkle in her eyes again. The last few shows she was more energetic than I've ever seen. She's smiling more, and she's been more of a goofball lately. So Andy," he said really looking at her.
"She's going to say yes no matter how you say it. Plus in Europe when we did 'Same Soul' she sounded different, in a good way though. Like she was happier when she was singing it and she was smiling all through out the song."
"What are you nerds talking about?" Lynn asked walking up to them with Brian and Angel behind her.
"Music."
"Sports."
"Harry Potter."
Andy, Alex, and Ethan all answered at the same time while Alex just laughed.
"Speaking of music Andy and I were just talking about a song." Alex said and she looked at him with wide eyes. He leaned in and whispered in her ear. She smiled and nodded. He gave her the count and she started to strum the guitar.
"You never know when you're gonna meet someone
And your whole wide world in a moment comes undone
You're just walking around and suddenly
Everything that you thought that you knew about love is gone
David stood up and gently took Lynn's arm and guided her to sit down next to Andy. He gave his little sister a kiss on the top of her head and smiled. He whispered in her ear and she nodded. He pulled away and gave her a wink with a smile.
You find out it's all been wrong
And all my scars don't seem to matter anymore
Cause they led me here to you
Andy closed her eyes as she sang the words. She loved this song, it was one of her favorites as well as a crowd favorite back home. She sang this song plenty of times before but this time it felt different. A lot of things felt different this time around. She couldn't help but smile when she started to sing the chorus.
I know that its gonna take some time
I've got to admit that the thought has crossed my mind
This might end up like it should
And I'm gonna say what I need to say
And hope to God that it don't scare you away
Don't wanna be misunderstood
But I'm starting to believe that this could be the start of something good
She opened her eyes and smiled when she sang the last line of the chorus and looked at Lynn. She then turned her head when she heard Alex singing the background.
"I can't wait to see her reaction when Andy asks her." Ethan said to David who smiled and nodded.
"I feel like they both deserve some one good and I seriously think they are perfect for each other." Angel said and they all nodded in agreement. Alex stood up from his seat and continued to play the rhythm of the song.
Everyone knows life has its Ups and downs
One day you're on top of the world and one day you're the clown
Andy looked up at Ethan and pointed at him and everyone laughed. Ethan rolled his eyes and waved her off, but gave her a smile.
Well I've been both enough to know
That you don't wanna get in the way when its working out
The way that it is right now
You see my heart I wear it on my sleeve
Cause I just can't hide it anymore
Angel took out her phone and started to record what was happening between Lynn and Andy. "Do you think she's nervous?" Brian whispered to Angel.
She shook her head, "I don't think so. She's really confident."
I know that it's gonna take some time
I've got to admit that the thought has crossed my mind
This might end up like it should
And I'm gonna say what I need to say
And hope to God that it don't scare you away
Don't wanna be misunderstood
But I'm starting to believe that this could be the start
"Things work out I might gain another sister," David said to Ethan who looked at him with a smile.
"One step at a time." He told him and patted him on the back. Andy turned her body towards Lynn to sing the next verse. This time she didn't want to close her eyes.
Cause I don't know where it's going
There's a part of me that loves not knowing
Just don't let it end before we begin
Lynn couldn't help but smile and touch Andy's cheek. She couldn't believe some one like Andy came her way. Some one so sweet, kind, thoughtful, humble, and genuine. The ones that let her go were crazy to even end things with her.
You never know when you're gonna meet someone
And your whole wide world in a moment comes undone
Andy really looked into Lynn's eyes and tried not to get lost in them when she sang the verse. This song was true in so many ways. One of them was meeting Lynn and how she turned her world upside, and inside out.
I know that its gonna take some time
I've got to admit that the thought has crossed my mind
This might end up like it should
And I'm gonna say what I need to say
And hope to God that it don't scare you away
Don't wanna be misunderstood
But I'm starting to believe
Oh I'm starting to believe that this could be the start of something good"
(Song and Lyrics by Daughtry)
Andy and Alex finished the last of the notes. Before Andy could even put down the guitar Lynn leaned in and gave her a deep kiss. Everyone around them cheered and clapped. They pulled away from each other and smiled.
Andy was just about to say something when her phone started to ring. "I swear if it's my mom again." She said as she took out her phone from her pocket and sure enough it was her mom.
"I'm so sorry. She's video chatting again." She looked at Lynn who just smiled and gave her a quick kiss.
"Go ahead I'll be over there." She nodded with her head and Andy smiled. Lynn stood up and walked over to where the rest of the gang was and they started to talk about Angel and Brian's wedding again.
"Hey mama what's up?"
"Andrea I'm not going to be able to meet Lyndsey in Richmond. Something's come up." Andy gently put down the guitar and started to walk away from the camp site. This didn't go unnoticed by Ethan. He took a few steps away from the group and watched as she paced back and forth. He saw her rub her face with her hands and she shook her head as well.
"What's going on?" Lynn asked standing next to Ethan.
He looked at her and shrugged, "I don't know. But it sounds serious."
"Her mom called again."
"Wow three times in one day that's a record." He said with a smile and took a sip of his drink.
"I'm out. You want another one?" He asked her.
she nodded handing over her cup, "Thank you."
"No worries."
He took her cup and made his way over to the coolers to refill their drinks. Lynn watched Andy and saw her shake her head a few times. Then, she put her phone in her back pocket. She watched as Andy put her hands on her head and then look up at the stars. Andy's hands came down and followed by her head.
She stood like that for several minutes then she looked back up to the stars. She watched as Andy's shoulders rose and fell as if she was taking a deep breath. She put her hands on her hips and started to pace back and forth a little bit.
Ethan returned and handed over her cup, "What happened?" He asked.
Lynn shook her head, "She seems to be upset about something. She looked up to the sky then back down then back up again."
"She was praying most likely. She'll take a hold of her cross and look up at the sky. Say something along the lines of hoping He hears and to watch out for someone." He took a sip of his drink and he saw someone walking towards Andy.
He knew who it was, "Lynn I need you to go to her. Like now." He said taking her cup away from her.
She looked at him confused, "Just go." He said and he nudged her towards her. Without another word Lynn started to walk towards Andy.
"What's going on?" Angel asked coming up to Ethan.
"Lynn said that Andy's mom called and then she stepped away from us. Lynn also said that she seemed upset. I noticed someone from Nicole's camp walking towards Andy so I told Lynn to go to her."
Angel watched as Lynn and the other person approached Andy. "Who do you think it is?"
Ethan shrugged, "My guess it's Nicole. A mutual friend and I keep in touch and she says that Nicole and Nate are having issues. Guessing that's why they came here. To work things out. But knowing Nicole, she has this way of trapping Andy. She's done it before. It took Andy nearly a year to get out of the trap. I'm just hoping Lynn reaches her before Nicole does."
At this point the others joined them as Ethan was talking about Nicole. They too hoped that Lynn reached Andy in time.
******************************************************************************
"Andy?" She heard and looked. Lynn was rushing up to her with a worried look.
"Hey what's wrong?" Andy asked as Lynn reached her. Andy gently put her hands on her arms seeing how hard she was breathing.
"Oh, I just wanted to make sure you were okay. From where I was standing you looked a little upset." Andy smiled and kissed her forehead.
"Come on I'll tell you about it back at camp." She said and put her arm around her shoulders. They both heard a grunt and turned to see Nicole pacing back and forth. Normally, Andy would stop and make sure that she was okay. But she just shrugged and started to walk back to their camp site.
Lynn looked behind them and asked her, "What do you thinks wrong?"
Again she shrugged, "I honestly could care less at this point. Knowing her, this could be one of her tricks to lure me in again like she has in the past. But I'm not falling for it. I have a feeling she's faking it. Plus, she's in my past now. Why go back when I can go forward with some one else?"
She said pulling Lynn close to her and kissed her cheek. Lynn blushed at the question as they reached their campsite.
Ethan walked up to them and gave them each a cup, "Everything okay?" He asked as they each took a cup.
Andy nodded, "Yeah for the most part. My mom has to go to the Philippines for a few weeks."
"Why?"
"Paperwork with the adoption, my grandma has to check in with their social security office, and my mom has to make some more repairs on the house she has over there. Or well has to at least do some paperwork or something."
"There's more, what are you holding back?" Ethan said and Andy sighed. She walked over to one of the logs and sat down. She took out her phone and found the picture her mom sent her.
She gave to Ethan and he put his hand on his mouth. Lynn looked over his shoulder and did the same thing, "Oh my God," she whispered and she immediately went to Andy's side.
The others looked and they couldn't believe what they were seeing. Ethan gave Andy her phone back and she took it.
She let out a deep breath and shook her head, "I never really knew my mom's side of the family. Mostly because Wendy and I grew up in the States. I do remember my mom crying on the phone one time because some one was sick, but I never knew who. I know that her sister was jealous of her and still is because she's been living the 'American Dream.' I know that her oldest brother pretty much spends the money my mom sends to them on things they don't need.
But what I do know is that this little boy is being abused and is being used to extort money from my mom. They told her two stories and they both don't add up." She put her cup down and then stood up and put her hands on her hips.
"What did they tell your mom?" Ethan asked.
Andy shook her head and let out a scoff, "One of the stories is that his older brother was playing around and put his fingers in a coffee mug, that had hot coffee in it."
"What's the other one?" Brian asked. Andy rubbed her face and took in a deep breath. She closed her eyes and let it out slowly.
"His mom was boiling water and she put him next to the bucket she was putting the hot water in. While her back was turned he put his hands in the bucket. But what doesn't add up is that the bucket is bigger than him and he can't even stand up. Plus the handle was on the other side."
She took out her phone again and found the picture of the bucket that her mom sent.
She gave it to Ethan and they all stood around him to look at it. "It doesn't make any sense."
Ethan looked up at her and nodded, "I agree with you. Is she going to be able to bring them over when she goes?"
Andy shook her head. "Why not?" He asked giving back her phone.
She shrugged, "I don't know. She wouldn't tell me. One, I think because we're going in October for three weeks so there's no point. We might bring them back with us. Two, it also depends on the paperwork. My parents want to do this the right way. They have to go through a lot of stuff just like they did with the other members of my mom's family."
"Is there anything we can do?" David asked.
Andy shook her head, "Unless you know how to teleport so I can punch my mom's brother in the face."
Ethan walked up to her and put his hands on her shoulders, "Calm down. I know you want to do something, but right now you can't. I know this news sucks. I know it came at the wrong time, but right now it's ten forty five. We can talk about this more tomorrow and when we get back to Virginia. I know you want to help, but you can only do so much right now. I know you already prayed and that's all you can do. I know you feel useless, but believe me you will help your family."
Andy nodded, "You're right, I'm sorry. I just-"
Ethan held up his finger, "Don't. You worry too much about everything, you need to loosen up a little bit and have a good time."
Alex walked up to them and held out her cup.
"He's right. I've seen you relax at least three times since you've been here. You've been non stop and we need you to just chill out for a little bit. Put everything you've been worrying about aside and have a good time tonight."
Andy nodded and took the cup from Alex she gave him a small smile, "I feel like things just keep happening."
"They're going to happen." Angel said and she turned to look at her. "Good things, bad things, they're going to happen and no matter what you do you can't stop it. But what you can do is enjoy tonight, and embrace what the new year will bring."
"We're not going anywhere like we told you before." Brian chimed in with a smile.
"There's a reason why we met you two. Maybe it was fate, or maybe it was luck. But something brought us together and we plan on keeping this friendship going."
"We're all in this together now, all of us," Lynn said walking up to Andy and taking her hand.
"There's a reason for everything and there's a reason for all of us being brought together. Maybe because we need healing in some way shape or form. Maybe we needed a breath of fresh air in our lungs. Maybe we needed new perspectives in our lives. No matter how you look at it we're becoming a family and we wouldn't want it any other way."
"Here's to 2018!" David said raising his cup.
The others followed, "Here, here!" They all cheered and smiled.
"You know I wouldn't want to be anywhere else right now." Andy said after she took a sip of her drink.
"What do you normally do on New Years Eve?" Lynn asked. Andy looked at Ethan as he added another piece of wood to the fire.
He stood up and looked at her with a smile, "Well either we would be at Mary's or have a small get together of our own. Not gonna lie, we've had the cops called on us a few times." He said with a small chuckle.
"No way!" Angel said looking between the two of them.
Andy nodded, "Oh yeah! It was mostly noise complaints. I think one time they came to the apartment like four times. We almost got arrested."
"Why didn't you?" David asked taking a seat in one of the lawn chairs. Everyone seemed to follow his lead as they all found a spot to sit down. Andy was really liking the logs that Ethan found. She seemed to find herself on one of those when she was looking or a seat.
"Well turned out that the cops eat at Ynot, and they recognized me." Ethan said trying not to slur his words.
Andy let out a small laugh, "Might wanna slow down there buddy."
Ethan stood up and let out a large belch, "You forget honey, I'm from Wisconsin!" He sauntered over to the cooler and grabbed a liquor bottle and went back over to the group.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Andrea's kryptonite." Andy's eyes went wide when she saw the bottle that said "FIREBALL" on it.
"How is that her kryptonite?" Alex asked. Ethan held up his finger and then took out his cell phone.
He looked through it and found what he was looking for, "I give you Exhibit A. Andy's 24th birthday."
"No!" Andy quickly stood up tried to rush over to Ethan but everyone was faster and started to watch the video. She tried to get through the group but they were blocking her as she heard her slurred voice coming through.
"Should I fall asleep to Emma Watson or Anna Kendrick?" Then, she heard Wendy's voice with a laugh, "Anna Kendrick."
"Holy shit she's crawled up the steps!" Brian said with laughter.
"I now give you Exhibit B. Andrew Phoenix Black"
"ETHAN JAMES!" She yelled and as she heard the music to Slo Mo's song "Ride" playing.
"Who's the girl?" Angel asked.
Ethan shrugged, "One of Andy's best friends. They've known each other for like thirteen years or something. Andy used to have the HUGEST crush on her when they first met." Lynn looked back at Andy with a raised eyebrow as she was shaking head with her hand on her hips.
"Finally, Exhibit C, Ynot Christmas 2015!"
"NO! NO! NO! NO!" Andy yelled again she tried to break through the group but she couldn't get through. Everyone but her watched as Andy was on the stage dancing and singing along to the song. Then out of no where a girl came up to her and kissed her. The voices on the video started to chant her name. After the make out session they watched as Andy cheered and then jumped off the stage and walk up to the camera, "MERRY FUCKING CHRISTMAS MOTHERFUCKERS! WOOOOOHHOOOOO LET'S PARTY!"
The camera turned and they saw the strobing lights and heard the loud music. They saw everyone dancing and having a good time. The video ended and everyone turned and looked at Andy with amused looks.
"Who was THAT girl?" Alex asked.
Andy shook her head, "I have NO idea. Ethan you said you deleted all of those!"
"Sorry bro, but they are just TOO good to delete!"
"Wanna explain those?" David asked with a smirk.
Again she shook her head, "Nope, I think those videos speak for themselves."
"What was up with that lap dance on your friend?" Alex asked.
She sighed, "I was a drag king once upon a time. That's how I tore my ACL. Not too long after that performance I jumped off the stage and tore it."
David gave her a confused look, "Wait. I thought you were performing at like a show, show. Cause when you said you jumped off a stage performing that's what I assumed."
"Well, technically it's still performing, I'm just not playing my guitar or anything." She explained.
"Oooohhhhh, I get it now. Okay gotcha." He said with a smile.
"Drag king?" Angel asked and everyone went back to their seats.
But Andy was still standing. "It's pretty much the opposite of a Drag Queen. I'm a woman and I put on the persona of a man. But being a Drag King is a little harder Example, I could basically put facial hair on my face and wear what I'm wearing now, go on a stage and perform. But I did the whole make-up, costumes, interacting with the crowd, the whole nine yards. Damn near went broke doing it."
"Ethan PLEASE tell me you have more of Andy's Drag King days!" Brian said and Ethan nodded with a smile. He looked through his phone and started a video and gave it to Brian. This time everyone went over to Brian and started to watch the video.
"Which one is that one?" Andy asked him, but he didn't have to answer when she heard the first few words and her eyes went wide.
"Just you being Jesse McCartney." He smirked and opened the bottle of Fireball and offered her some.
She waved her hand and he took a step closer with his signature goofy grin. "No. Not tonight."
He took another step, "Come on, just one shot."
"You're gonna peer pressure me right now?! Seriously?! Tonight of all nights?!"
"It's just one shot."
"The last time it was just 'one shot' I ended up dancing on tables at Denny's!" Ethan smirked and rushed over to Brian.
"ETHAN!" She yelled and followed him.
"I HAVE to show you this!" He said as he took his phone back from Brian. He looked through his phone and found the video. He motioned for Brian to get up and he did. But before he sat down he wanted to set the scene. Andy made a move to grab Ethan's phone but he stopped her. He laughed and he found what he was looking for.
"Okay, let me set the stage," he started to explain.
He stood tall and proud and looked at everyone, "We all know how Andy can be," he paused, "What's the word?"
"Workaholic?" Lynn asked with a smile and wink looking at Andy who just shook her head and smirked back.
"And then some, thank you Lynn." Ethan said turning to her and then continued on with his story.
"The night was October 8th 2013 Andrea's big 25th birthday party. We all went out to a new club and got her in my word swasted. Upon leaving instead of going to Rick's Cafe we went to a Denny's instead because it was closer. What you are about to witness is what I like to call "The Epic Drunkness Of Andrea Michelle."
He sat down in the lawn chair that Brian occupied and looked at Andy with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes, "Now, everyone gather around and watch." He hit play on his phone and everyone leaned in close to watch.
Andy could hear the voices coming from the video and she couldn't help but turn bright red when she heard her voice declaring her love for Nicole.
"Okay right here, this is where she gets up on the table!" Ethan said and everyone watched as they saw Andy stand on the table. She pointed at Nicole and attempted to tap dance on the table. Claiming that she was trying to do the traditional love jig she saw in a movie once. Wendy and Juliet were trying to get her down from the table telling her that her food was ready.
They watched as Michael and Clint helped her down from the table and she kissed Nicole deeply. Then, she said into the camera that Nicole was the one for her and that she loved her with all her heart. The video ended there and everyone looked up at Andy whose face was redder than a bad sunburn.
"So you CAN relax," Alex said with a small laugh and everyone joined in. Andy just shrugged and sat down on the log. She took a sip of her drink and looked down at the ground. She rubbed her face with her hand and took in a deep breath and let it out.
"Part of me wishes I could erase that night." She said finally looking up at everyone. "What I forgot to mention was that Nicole and I were on and off for five years. It wasn't just five years straight we were together."
"But you told me-" Lynn started to say.
Andy nodded, "I know, I know, and I'm sorry. What I told you was all true. The getting the place together and everything. All that happened when I came back from Vermont when she tried to convince me to come back. But I was already coming back because I found out my grandma had passed away. After all that she and I got back together. Got the apartment. We broke up again, after three months got back together."
Didn't break up this time. Really thought she was the one. Then, I bought the ring and planned on proposing and then she broke up with me for good. But she kept trying to come back and I kept falling for it. I finally broke out of it and I told myself if it was meant to be she'll come back again. But little did I know that I would start to have feelings for some one else." She looked at Lynn.
"I think I gave her truth juice." Ethan said in a whisper.
"What do you mean?" Brian whispered back.
"Jim Bean with a splash of Jagermeister mixed with a some cherry flavoring, and pineapple juice. She drinks that she spills her guts!" He told them.
"Wait so we can ask her ANYTHING?" David asked and Ethan nodded. Everyone looked at each and rushed over to Andy and sat around her. She looked at everyone with a confused look and they all had smirks on their faces.
"What do like about Lynn?" Angel asked.
Andy smiled and took a sip of her drink. "What's not to like? She's amazing, she's talented, humble, down to earth, likable, doesn't take anyone's shit."
Everyone chuckled and then Andy really looked at Lynn, "She's not afraid to speak her mind. She has the most amazing eyes that I've ever seen. She cares about not only her family but the fans."
She paused and smiled, "She takes out her ear plug when y'all are performing and I know it's because she wants to hear us sing the words that she wrote. Then she smiles, and watches the crowd. It's like for that moment the crowd is performing for her and not the other way around. She hears thousands of voices singing the lyrics at the top of their lungs and I can tell that for her it's one of the greatest feelings to have.
She likes to poke fun at herself sometimes. Laughs at herself when something she does is embarrassing. She puts her heart into her music and into her lyrics. She pushes herself and picks herself back up. She doesn't give up and she persists. But at the end of the day she's still Lyndsey. Not Lynn Gunn, but just Lyndsey. No one can touch that."
David looked at his little sister and noticed she was smiling, blushing, and a small tear escaped from her eye.
He put his arm around her and kissed her forehead, "I think she's a keeper." He whispered.
She nodded, "I think so too." She leaned into him and Brian cleared his throat and started to speak.
"Andy, I couldn't help but notice that when things get a little out of hand you tend to run away. Example, that night when Melissa showed up out of no where. You yelled at her and then you just took off. Also when Kara said that two of your exes were trying to say that they were trying to get back with you, you just shut down on us. I know you told us eventually. But I just kinda wanna know in further depth, why do you handle things that way?"
Andy sighed, "Well I guess you could say when I was fourteen I made sure a guy could never walk again. To this day he can't. I had to go through some anger management classes. I have this temper and if I don't get it in check, all I see is red and the next thing I know I either put a hole in the wall, or I've trashed a room." She paused to clear her throat.
"So that night I had to do something and I couldn't trash a room that isn't mine. I grabbed my running gear and left. I've done it plenty of times. Even after rough nights at work. I'll get home change and just go run. Or if I get off early enough I'll call my dad and ask if he wants to go to the shooting range. I'll eventually talk about it, but I have to be able to have a clear head, because I don't want to say things I'll regret later."
"What are your nightmares about?" Lynn asked. Andy took a sip of her drink and looked into the fire. She stared into it for a few more minutes then took a deep breath.
"When I was fourteen, I was living in Okinawa and my basketball team made it to the championship. I wanted to get some extra practice in so I headed over to the basketball court to work on some stuff."
She stood up and crossed her arms, "I was working on my free throws when I heard footsteps and then I heard this voice. This deep voice ask me where my boys were. I didn't get a look at him. But I told him that they were meeting me and that they would be there shortly. Well he didn't like that answer." She paused again for a moment recalling the painful memory.
"Next thing I know I was hit in the back of the head and I blacked out. I remember coming to and then getting kicked repeatedly in the stomach. Then punched in the face. He grabbed me by my hair and told me that he was going to fuck up my life."
Andy cleared her throat and put her hands on her hips and sighed, "For about fifteen years I had nightmares because of that. The guy was caught when I turned twenty seven. Turned out he was wanted for a lot of shit. Anyway, the nightmares are mostly people I care about in situations that I can't get them out of." She rubbed her face remembering a nightmare and tried not to let her voice crack.
"There was one where I saw my sister, Ethan, Nicole, and Shey tied up in chairs on this ledge and there were nooses around their necks, their mouths tape shut, and I had to save them. But the only way for me to do that was to beat this guy.
But it always ended the same. Him with his hand around my neck, lifting me up, as I'm bloodied and bruised. Then, he makes me watch them. One by one, they fall, and I watch them struggle trying to break free.
The ones I care about, trying to hold on. I wake up crying, or in a cold sweat. Ethan told me a few times I'm either not breathing or my heart stopped. I've been doing therapy for a long time and just six months ago they stopped. Until that night Melissa came and it started back up again. Because I can't get shaken awake like I was."
Andy turned her back on the others and she sniffled, she rubbed her eyes and blinked back the tears.
No one knew what to do but Alex thought of a question to lighten the mood a little bit, "Andy what's your favorite sex position?"
Andy turned around with wide eyes and Lynn punched Alex in the arm. Angel did the same thing.
"OW! Come on! I know you were wondering! I heard the two of you talking about it the other day!" He exclaimed, gesturing to her and Angel.
Andy looked at the two women who blushed. Ethan and Brian were holding each other up because they were laughing so hard. They were also trying to catch their breath. David grabbed the bottle of vodka and took two big gulps out of it.
"I need to know the answer to this!" Brian said.
"If she doesn't tell you I will!" Ethan said wiping a laughing tear from his eye. Alex looked back at Andy who was standing there with her hand on her cheek and an amused smile on her face.
"I'll ask again. Andy what is your favorite sex position?" Alex asked with a smirk and a little slower.
She shook her head and sat down on the log. She took a sip of her drink and looked at Alex, "How about I give you a fantasy instead?"
"Even fucking better!" Alex said and sat down next to her.
She laughed and cleared her throat, "Okay so I've always had this fantasy in my head where I'm at a desk and I'm writing on my laptop. I'm just really into what I'm doing and I'm not paying attention to anything around me."
Angel noticed Lynn fidgeting a little and she smiled shaking her head. She walked over to her and gently nudged her. Lynn looked at her and she saw how red she was and she put her hand over her mouth to stop herself from laughing.
"Are you okay?" she finally asked and Lynn nodded very enthusiastically then bite her lower lip. They turned their attention back to Andy. But Angel gave her best friend a sideways glance and smirked before she turned her attention back to Andy.
"So, I feel her arms come around my neck, like leaning in and she starts to just gently nibble my ear, but I'm not paying attention. I'm so focused on what I'm writing that I tell her I'll come to bed in a few. But she's not having it. So she decides to try the other side and I tell her again that I'll be along in a few, I just have to finish the chapter."
Lynn found herself taking a few steps towards her. Ethan was chugging away at his drink with a smile. Brian sat back on his heels listening to every word. David and Angel just gave amused looks at everyone and Alex had his hand under his chin hanging on every word.
"She still hasn't given up. So she decides to straddle me and start to kiss me neck. At this point I'm half tempted to give up. But I just laugh and I keep writing because I know which keys to hit. "
"Wait," Ethan said sitting down on the other side of And.
"Tell them what she's wearing," he said slurring his words.
Andy took a final sip of her drink and smiled. Without another word Ethan grabbed her cup and walked away. She watched him go over to the coolers and then she looked back at everyone looking at her waiting for her to continue.
"She's wearing one of my button downs, it's either a blue one or a white one, no bra, and red lace underwear." She couldn't look Lynn in the eye when she was describing what the girl in her fantasy was wearing.
She cleared her throat and continued on, "She gets off of me and unbuttons the shirt she's wearing and pulls my chair away from the desk. At this point she finally has my attention. I stand up and look at her and no words are said between us. I pick her up and our lips meet. I have her against the wall." Ethan came back and sat down next to her handing over her cup.
"It gets pretty hot and heavy. I have her on the bed and we flip over so she's straddling me and I sit up and my hand is well ya know and my fingers, well ya know and we just go at it, until we can't go anymore."
She finished her story and took a sip of her drink, "Jesus Ethan what the fuck did you put in this?!"
"Just some old truth serum." He said lifting up his cup.
Her eyes widen, "I think you put WAY too much Jim Bean in this."
"Catch up bitch!" He said and she laughed.
"So this is why you guys have been asking some deep shit," she said looking at her cup then back at Ethan.
"Oh don't blame him, besides getting to know these things about you are amazing! You're so open and honest but I'm sure you still have secrets that you want to keep to yourself." Brian said standing up.
She chuckled while shaking her head, "There are some things I will take to my grave."
"Oh come on, at least tell us one!" Angel said sitting down in one of the lawn chairs.
Andy shook her head, "Only if you ask the right questions."
"She's into the whole fifty shades thing," Ethan said and Andy punched his arm.
Brian and Alex laughed really loudly and Andy turned a bright shade of red. She looked at Ethan as if she wanted to kill him. He just gave her his goofy grin and patted her on her shoulder.
"Is it your sole purpose to embarrass me for the rest of our lives?"
"You're Goddamn right it is!"
"Why are you into those?" Angel asked.
Andy shrugged, "No idea. But let me tell you, and this is coming from a lesbian." She took a sip of her drink and made a face again looking at Ethan who just winked at her.
"When I was reading the first book my girlfriend at the time was working over night and I asked her what time she got off of work. She asked me why and I told her that I needed her to come over as soon as possible. Didn't tell her why, but when she got off of work well we didn't leave the bedroom for a while."
"Was that when you went for eight hours?" Brian asked.
Andy shook her head, "No that was with Vicki. The six hours was with Nicole. That girlfriend never really went beyond taking off clothes. Okay well, just shirts but nothing below the belt."
"Can we pick a different subject?" David asked and everyone laughed.
"I agree with David. Can we pick another topic?" Andy asked looking at her watch. It was eleven thirty and she took a deep breath letting it out. She had thirty minutes to find away to ask Lynn her big question.
"How did you parents take to you coming out?" David asked.
Andy shrugged, "They took it pretty well actually. I came out to them when I turned twenty. But it wasn't just them, it was two family friends of ours too, so it was a little more intense.
They asked if I was getting married, they asked if I was pregnant, and they asked if I was going to join the Navy. All of which I answered no. When I told them my dad said that he suspected for a while. My mom said as long as I'm happy that's all that matters.
I was scared at first because of my grandfather. But I came out to them the next year. My grandma was all smiles and my grandfather, well just told more war stories of Korea." She chuckled and shook her head.
"My family has been really supportive of my lifestyle. I mean when it comes to sports my dad and I are all about them. We play catch while my mom and my sister do the girly things. Shopping, getting the nails done, and haircuts. But the biggest surprise was when my sister came out to them about three years later."
"Wait, your sister's gay too?" Brian asked.
Andy nodded, "She was engaged for about a year but they broke up. That broke her heart but she bounced back and met someone new. She's really happy now."
"What do your parents think about having two gay daughters?" David asked.
"Well with me, like I said they suspected, but with Wendy they thought it was a phase for a while until her engagement then they knew she was truly gay. It took them a while to come around and for a while I blamed myself."
"Why?" David asked.
Andy just shrugged, "I think because I kind of introduced her to my lifestyle. The club scene, going out and having a good time. I mean when I was nineteen I made out with three girls in one night. That night will forever be one of the best nights of my life."
She took a sip of her drink and made another face, "Seriously Ethan there's WAY too much of Jim Bean in this. I'll be right back." She stood up and started to walk over to the coolers.
"Okay I can't hold it in anymore!" Angel said looking to Lynn and before she could say anything Brian rushed over to her and put his hand over her mouth.
"You keep your mouth shut!"
"What's going on?" Lynn asked with a very confused look at her two friends.
"All I can tell you is you better fucking say yes!" Brian said and he looked at Angel.
"Baby, I love you. I need you to NOT speak when I remove my hand." Angel squinted her eyes at him and he felt her tongue against his palm.
"That's not gonna work anymore." He said smirking at her, "I have since grown immune to that little trick of yours."
Andy came back and sat down on the log and looked at Brian and Angel. "What did I miss?" She asked and everyone shook their heads. S
he just shrugged and took a sip of her drink, "Much better." She looked over at Ethan and she could tell he was pretty much drunk at this point.
"Dude, you've gone six months without puking! You better not break that!" She said with a laugh.
He shook his head, "Oh honey, there ain't no way I'm puking tonight!"
"Have you been mixing liquors?"
He just gave her a goofy grin and nodded, "Try to get some food in you." She said patting him on the back.
"Good idea." He stood up and walked over to the coolers and started to look through one of them. He found what he was looking for and came back.
"Jeez I didn't mean bring the whole cooler." Andy said laughing when he sat down and dropped a few things on the ground.
She went for the beef jerky and opened it up. She could feel a little buzz but she wanted to have a clear head when she asked Lynn her big question. She was still having trouble with how she wanted to ask her.
She felt like she wanted to throw up because her nerves were getting the best of her. She took in a deep breath and let it out. She just needed to stay calm for the next twenty minutes and she'll be okay once the question was asked.
"So Lynn, are you ready for you big cover photo shoot?" David asked.
She nodded, "Yeah, I mean it's gonna be great. Gives us more exposure and I also have to shoot that announcement for the second part of the tour. Honestly I can't wait for Coachella. That is going to be amazing!"
"I'm gonna be so drunk!" Ethan said out loud and everyone laughed. They heard a loud cheer come from one of the campsites. They turned to see where it was coming from. Turned out it was from Nicole's campsite. They turned back around and just shrugged. Andy stood up and put a fresh log into the fire and adjusted the ones that were already burning.
"I almost forgot!" She said and rushed over to the coolers. She grabbed what she needed and walked back over to them.
"S'mores anyone?" She asked holding marshmallows, chocolate bars, gram crackers, and long sticks for the marshmallows. Everyone rushed over to her and started to grab what they wanted. She laughed and they all got settled.
"I was wondering if we were going to do this or not." Alex said putting at least four marshmallows on his stick.
"It's about to get sticky up in here!" Brian said and everyone started laughing hysterically. Andy placed everything down on one of the lawn chairs and got her stick and marshmallows together. Once she got her marshmallows on her stick she heard her name being called. She looked up to see if it was Lynn but she was laughing at what Angel said.
She shook her head and started to walk over to the fire pit to start roasting her marshmallows. But she heard her name again. She turned around and she didn't see anyone. Again she just shrugged and she reached the fire pit and started to roast her marshmallows. That's when she saw Ethan stand up and look behind her. She looked at him then turned around. There was Nicole standing there with a tear stained face.
"Andy can I talk to you?" She asked in a shaky voice.
Andy shook her head, "Uh, no. I'm with my friends. Whatever it is I'm sure you can talk to Nate and your new friends about." She said and she turned around. Lynn came over to Andy and took her hand in hers. Andy smiled at her and kissed her forehead.
"I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for everything and I hope you can forgive me. Nate just proposed and I said yes. I also wanted to wish you a Happy New Year and I hope you find your happiness. I hope you can forgive me." She said trying to holding back a sob.
She wanted Andy to turn around, to walk up to her and give her a hug, and to tell her everything would be okay. But Andy just stood there staring into the fire watching her marshmallows get toasted up. She waited a few more minutes and turned around and finally walked away.
"Did she come over here to gloat or to apologize?" Andy asked.
"Both?" Alex said with an unsure tone. David was helping him put his s'more sandwich together.
"I don't understand how you're going to fit all of this in your mouth." He said while Alex just smiled.
"Watch me!"
"Oh, oh, oh, I need to get this on video!" Brian said taking out his phone. Alex had his s'more sandwich ready and it was huge! With four toasted marshmallows, and two pieces of chocolate on each gram cracker.
He looked at Brian's phone, "Cheers! Happy New Year!" He said and he opened his mouth really wide and took a bite of his sandwich.
He manged to get most of it but the marshmallows were so gooey they ended up all over his mouth. Everyone cheered and laughed at the same time. Andy turned to help Lynn put her s'more sandwich together and she did the same with Andy. When they both took a bite they laughed at each other because they had marshmallow all over the face.
They each helped each other wipe away the mess from their faces and gave each other a small kiss. Andy checked her watch and there was fifteen minutes until midnight. She could feel her heart racing. She still had no idea how she was going to ask her. She didn't want to sound cliche and she didn't want to just blurt it all out.
She decided not to record it only because she wanted to keep it private but she did want to capture the midnight kiss. Because to be honest it would be her first official one. She was so lost in her thoughts she didn't hear David ask her something.
"Andy?" He said for the third time. She snapped out of her daze and looked at him, "I'm sorry what?"
He chuckled, "I asked if you wanted to make another one?"
She smiled and shook her head, "No I'm good thank you, one's enough for me. Don't want to mess up my stomach too much."
"What about your medicine?" Lynn asked.
Andy shook her head, "I can't take it if I'm drinking alcohol. Messes everything up."
She nodded, "Makes sense. So what's the plan for the next few days that you're here?"
Andy sighed and looked over at Ethan laughing with Alex and Brian while Angel was rolling her eyes. "Well Ethan and I need to get some laundry done so we can pack for our trip back to Virginia. Clean up the rental house and get back to our lives for the time being and go from there. What about you?"
"Well I actually have to pack for Ohio because I actually have to leave when you two leave. Which is sooner than I thought. So I guess we're kind of leaving together." They both gave out a soft chuckle.
"After that might meet some friends in L.A. for a little bit. Do you remember Party Nails and her friend that was with her Jordan? The first opening act?"
Andy nodded, "Yeah, they're pretty good."
"I have plans to meet up with them, to catch up. They've been working on some things together and want some of my input and I've been working on something for Lights. Then, I'll be in Brooklyn for a bit with our tour manger to start putting everything together."
"Yet, I'm the workaholic," Andy said.
Lynn playfully hit her in the arm. "Oh, and my friend Ally and I always have these heart to hearts when I'm in L.A. She's amazing and I always look forward to seeing her. You have to get past her test."
Andy looked at her with wide eyes, "I thought your parents were enough, now your friends? I don't do great with passing 'why should you date her tests'."
Lynn smiled and took Andy's hand in hers, "Babe, my parents like you, they REALLY like you. David adores you and after what my little cousins said about how cute you are. I think you're passing with flying colors."
"Are you sure you want me to come on tour with you? I mean we're going to be together all the time and you might get annoyed with me. It tends to happen. Also I mean there's our time together and our time apart and then we meet in the middle.
I just want to make sure this is what you want and I mean I seem to mess up relationships one way or another. I can never seem to learn from my mistakes. I guess it's a habit I didn't know about. I just keep thinking if I just keep showing how much I appreciate them and just shower with everything I have it would work out." Andy let out a sigh and Lynn touched her cheek.
"Hey, look at me," she said gently and Andy slowly looked at her. "We all have habits we never know how to break. Mistakes that we keep repeating until we finally figured out where we went wrong in the first place. I'm sure you'll get annoyed with me too. I'm such a perfectionist, shit, even the guys get annoyed.
But as for our time apart, we don't have to spend every waking moment together on tour. I mean, if you want to go and explore with Ethan and the guys, go ahead. I'll do the same with our other friends on tour. We'll meet each other back at the show and afterwards we'll talk about our day. I may have been in one relationship, but I know that not every relationship is perfect. Like you told me before, we're on this rollercoaster ride together. Let's have some fun with it."
"I swear, I rubbed off on you since you know what to say now." Andy said with a smile and they leaned in and their lips met softly.
"Guys we have five minutes! Grab your drinks! We have to get a good spot for the fireworks!" He said with a cup in one hand and his other hand in Angel's.
They started to walk towards the frozen water. Everyone else followed and Andy hoped that Lynn wouldn't notice her sweaty palm in her hand. She took a big gulp of her drink and tried to calm down her nerves. This was a really big moment for her. She was about to ask a rock star to be her girlfriend. She just hoped she would get the answer that she wanted.
Once they reached the edge of the water they noticed people started to gather around to get a good look at the fireworks that were about to start.
"I'm so glad we got to do this. This has got to be the best time off we've ever had." Brian said raising his cup.
"I couldn't agree more." Alex said with a smile.
Lynn nodded, "Agreed! Best Holiday ever!" The three friends hugged each other and then went back to where the were standing.
"Thirty seconds!" Brian said.
Andy looked at Lynn, "I need to ask you something."
Lynn looked at her and smiled. "Okay, what is it?"
"I've been thinking about us and where we stand at this point. But I want you to know that I'm not doing this because of what Melissa wants. I've been thinking about us for a while now."
Lynn nodded, "Okay? Andrea you're kinda freaking me out."
"Fifteen seconds!" They heard Brian yell.
"Okay, um, Lyndsey, I want to take the next step with you. Meaning I want to be with you officially. As in um," she started to stumble over her words and Lynn tried to hold back her laughter.
"10!"
"Andy just say it," Lynn said.
"9!"
"Lyndsey, will you,"
"8!"
"Yes?"
"7!"
"Willyoubemygirlfriend?!" Andy mentally kicked herself for rushing those words.
"6!"
"What?"
Andy cleared her throat and closed her eyes letting out a breath, "Will you be my girlfriend?" she finally asked.
"5!"
Lynn looked at her with wide eyes and took a step closer to her, "I thought you would never ask."
"4!"
Andy looked at her confused, "Wait is that a yes?"
"3!"
Lynn nodded and Andy took out her phone and looked at Lynn who just nodded with a smile.
"2!"
Andy got her camera ready, "You're going to be my first midnight kiss."
Lynn smiled and leaned in, "I know"
"1! HAPPY NEW YEAR!" Lynn and Andy's lips met as Andy took a couple of pictures. Everyone around them started to cheer. Brian and Angel kissed. David found himself kissing a girl that he only just met two minutes ago. Ethan was chugging his drink and Alex was pouting.
"Man, everyone is kissing some one and I have no one to kiss!" Ethan heard what he said and turned towards him.
He placed a hand behind Alex's head and before he could react his lips met Ethan's.
