Chapter 18
I had gotten as close to the group as I could get without them knowing I was there, and I stopped to evaluate the situation, figure out what would be the best way to divert their attention to Nick. I hadn’t figured what to do before I saw Joseph once again face Nick, only this time he held a wooden stake in his hands. I had to think fast. Joseph was about to finish Nick off. Just as Joseph raised the stake to drive it through Nick’s weakened body, I jumped out from my hiding place,
“ Well, well, well…there seems to be a regular party going on here!”
Their attention turned toward me as I stood there, trying my best to look like nothing they did could shock me.
“ Go away little girl!” Joseph sneered at me. The others closed in on me, their vampire eyes glaring at me, but I didn’t let that get to me.
“ Now, now Joseph.” I said, “ I think I’d rather join the party! I’m awfully bored tonight...”
“ If you know what’s good for you, you’ll leave now!” Joseph said. He was obviously annoyed be my presence. I laughed at his lame attempt to threaten me.
“ As I recall it, the last time we met, you were the one running away…You honestly don’t think you can beat me now, do you?”
By this time, he was so angry I could practically see fuming coming out of his ears.
“ Leave!” He finally said, after we’d had a bit of a staring contest.
I walked up to him, a stake in each hand, and stopped a few inches from his face. I stared into his cold, demonic eyes and whispered,
“ Make me!”
Finally he’d had enough of talking and he raised his arm to strike me down. I moved to the side as fast as I could, making him punch a hole in the air. I ran around the group and Joseph turned around to face me again. He let out an angered scream and pounced on me. Before he reached me I kicked up some dirt, blinding him for a brief moment, and then proceeded to place kicks on his torso. He faltered back, surprised by my strength. I placed myself in a position, stating that I was ready for whatever he had for me now.
In the meantime, Nick had gotten up and found some sticks he could use as weapons. As soon as the other vampires realized he had gotten up from his position on the ground. They pounced on him, two at a time. Fortunately, most of them where still young, and didn’t pose a problem for him, even if he was hurt. One by one he staked them until only a few remained. They didn’t make any attempts to attack him. Obviously they feared him, as long as Joseph was unable to keep him in check. They just pulled back and looked at Nick, waiting to see what his next move would be. Their attention was caught by another painful scream from Joseph.
When Joseph caught his balance again he jumped forward, attempting to knock me down, but I, expecting his attack, held a stake firmly in my right hand, ready to shove it through his heart. As he hit me, the force of the blow caused me to lose my balance and I fell back, but not before ramming the stake into his stomach. It didn’t kill him, but it seriously injured him. The vampires, who had kept an eye on Nick, turned their attention to us, and saw their leader fall to the ground writhing in pain. They ran to him, helped him to his feet and dragged him into the forest, away from us.
I lay on the ground, trying to regain my breath after having the wind knocked out of me from the fall. If I had been able to get up from my position on the ground sooner I would have finished the job, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case.
Finally my breathing returned to somewhat normal, and I realized that I didn’t know how Nick was doing. I stood up and looked around to find him. He was sitting with his back against the stonewall of the cottage, clutching his stomach. I ran over and crouched beside him. He was sweating. He almost looked human, if it wasn’t for the fact that his sweat had a crimson glow to it. I took his hand a carefully moved it away from his stomach. As much as I feared what I might see, I wanted to see how badly he was hurt. I cringed when I saw the bloody wound. Any human would have died from injuries that serious. I looked at his face, trying to look into his eyes, but they were closed, pain written all over his face. I once again felt tears pricking at the back my eyes. It would have been so easy to just break down and cry, but I wouldn’t. I couldn’t. Nick needed me. He needed me to be strong. To bring him back to his house safely. But I had to now he would be alright.
“ Nick? Are you” I didn’t get to finish my sentence.
“ I’ll be fine Angel.” He said, “But it hurts like a bitch!”
I smiled a little when our eyes met. Nick returned it.
“ We need to get you back to the mansion.” I said, “ Can you stand?”
“ If you help me.” He said.
I grabbed his free arm and pulled it over my shoulder.
“ Ready?”
He nodded and slowly we started to rise.
