The cab pulled up to Rob’s place and Gemma paid the driver. She took a deep breath and stepped outside where she noticed that it had slowly started to rain. It wasn’t pouring, yet, but she felt her hair get damped as she moved towards the front door. She took yet another deep breath and knocked on his door. The rain got worse as she was waiting for him to open, and she could feel the alcohol pumping through her veins, but wasn’t really sure whether it was doing her any good. She still hadn’t figured out what to tell him when she saw him. She had been thinking about it on the way from the bar to his place, but she had been left without a single conclusion. She shook the many worries off and decided to just take things as they came. Although the second he opened the door and she looked into his eyes, all the worries from before came rushing back over her and she couldn’t help beating herself up for even coming. Why? Her mind went absolutely blank and she forgot about all the things her and Phoenix had been talking about. Why was she there? What was she supposed to say to him? What would he think, seeing her standing in his doorway? His smile made her tense up inside, but when he moved out of her way to let her enter, she calmed down somewhat.
“Have you been drinking?!” His eyes were looking concerned, but she couldn’t get past the fact that he was still having a smile plastered on his lips.
“Yeah… a bit… “ She giggled when hearing her own voice wavering.
“Alone?” He took her jacket off of her, and she noticed how wet it was already.
“No. With Phoenix.” She smiled. “That dude is cool. We talked a lot.”
“About?” Still Rob had a smile on his lips but his eyes showed confusion.
“You.” She stopped smiling and realized the seriousness that could come out of this.
“Me?” His smile faded when he saw the frown forming between her eyes.
“Yes.” She suddenly noticed how much her voice was slurring and she couldn’t find ways to build a simple sentence. How was she ever going to tell him how she felt when she didn’t even know how to put together the three little words that she needed to get off her chest?
“Why?” He was starting to freak her out. Usually he would have talked more, and his questioning small words were getting to her. She shook her head and looked to the floor.
“Why, Gemz?” He placed a hand under her chin and lifted her head up so that their eyes met. “Why me?” She looked into his eyes and tried to make sense of what he was thinking. But she couldn’t. To tell the truth, she could hardly focus on them, and when she tried, she felt her stomach turn and her head became heavy with dizziness. Her mind was filled with confused thoughts and it made her angry with herself. Why didn’t she have the nerve to just come out and tell him? Suddenly an unknown courage appeared within her chest and she spat out the words that she had so desperately wanted to say.
“Because I love you. Because I love you and I miss you. Okay? Is that what you want me to say?” Just as the words were hitting Rob, he removed his hand and turned around walking towards the living room. She realized how harsh the words had been and stumbled after him.
“I’m sorry, Rob.” She slurred. “I didn’t mean to sound that… I’m sorry.” She placed a hand on his shoulder and he stopped walking.
“Don’t apologise, Gemz. It’s okay.“ He turned around and looked at her. “I’m just ... confused.”
“Confused? Why?” She was melting when she felt him look at her. She was burning up inside.
“I don’t know.” He took her hand and their fingers melted together and entwined for a second before he let go of it and sat down on the couch with a sigh. She stood dumbfounded and looked at him. What was she supposed to do now? As if he read her mind, he padded on the seat next to him and looked up at her with a smile.
“Come sit with me, please.” She slowly staggered over to him and sat down with a bump.
They were sitting on the edge of the couch in silence. Things were getting a lot more tense than what any of them wanted. Rob was still feeling pretty confused as to what she was doing there, and she didn’t know what to say anymore. Now she had admitted to her feelings and she still didn’t know how he felt. Why didn’t he say anything? She thought that she would take a chance.
“So what… what are your thoughts on it?” He looked at her with a puzzled look on his face, and she realized that he of course didn’t know what she was talking about. “My feelings.” She rolled her eyes letting him know that she knew that wasn’t exactly obvious. He looked away again and still said nothing. Gemma felt like the couch swallowed her, and in that second, she didn’t really mind. She wanted to be anywhere but right there next to him. She closed her eyes and leaned back, as her back hit the couch, she suddenly felt herself get overwhelmingly dizzy and the remembrance of how much alcohol she had in her system became obvious to her yet again. She opened her eyes, hoping that it would calm her body down. It did. For a second. She looked at his back and moved a hand up to touch it, but just before she reached him, he turned his head and looked at her. She pulled her hand back and smiled while diverting her look to another place in the room. Anywhere but him.
“You better mean what you are saying…” She choked on her breath as the words that came flowing from his lips startled her. “I can’t get hurt one more time without falling apart.” She could tell that he was still looking at her, but still she was too afraid to look his way. She didn’t know how to respond to his words, and this time she was the one left with an empty mind. He leaned down too and for the first time, their bodies really touched each other. His shoulder brushed softly against hers and her gaze fell on his face when she felt the electricity from his touch. This wasn’t just his hand … this wasn’t just any touch. Their eyes met and she noticed the smile on his lips. He leaned in against her and tilted his head towards hers. She turned her head even more to keep eye contact with him, but as she did so, he turned his head too and their lips accidentally brushed against each other. Staying absolutely still with their lips still touching each other, they were both feeling the anticipation of what the other one would do. As Gemma made a slow movement away from his lips, he placed a hand behind her neck and pulled her closer than ever, deepening the kiss. Softly parting her lips she greeted his tongue’s wish to enter. As the kiss became wetter and more passionate the room starting spinning more and more, and Gemma felt an incredible pain in her stomach and she opened her eyes to see if it would make her feel better. She saw Rob’s closed eyes and the insensitivity of the kiss made her feel like she was flying. She had never had two more contradicting feelings fighting a battle within her. She wanted this kiss. She had wanted it for so long now. And she never wanted it to end. But the pain in her stomach reminded her of the fact that she had too much alcohol flowing in her, and as the blood started to run faster in her body and as she started to breath heavily – it all became too much for her to take. She yanked away from the kiss and ran to the bathroom where she quickly started to empty herself in the toilet. She felt sick. She felt happy. He kissed her. What she hadn’t dared to hope for, had happened, and here she was. The sweet taste of Rob was quickly being replaced by a sour taste. She frowned when thinking about what she had left behind on the couch, but hardly having finished the thought she felt a hand on her back. Rob. A small part of her mind felt eased by the thought of him being there, and she hardly thought about what situation she was in. He was there. And that was all that mattered. Another wave of discomfort came over her, and the thoughts of how happy she was, flew out of her mind, and was replaced with cold sweats and nauseating dizziness. As yet another wave rushed over her, she felt her eyes shot and everything went black.
As Gemma collapsed on the floor next to the toilet, Rob rushed to the cabin and found a washcloth. Pouring cold water on it, he placed it on her forehead. He smiled to himself as it became clear to him how ironic this whole situation was. He kneeled down beside her, and lifted her up with him by putting his hands under her arms.
“Gemma? Are you okay?” Her eyes remained closed while she mumbled something incoherently. He placed one arm by her knees and picked her up. Carrying her to the bed, he noticed that she had vomit on her shirt. As he slowly placed her on the bed, he hesitated for a minute, thinking about whether or not he should take it off. How would she feel about it?
“Gemz?” He tried to make some kind of contact with her, and shook her shoulder gently. “Gemz? I’m just going to take your shirt off, okay?” She was out cold, and he got no response what so ever. Slowly he pulled it off of her, sliding it off her arms, he noticed that she was wearing a small red top underneath it. ‘Thank god’ he thought to himself. That made it easier on him. On both of them. She wouldn’t mind, and she probably wouldn’t be having as many questions rushing in her mind when waking up in the morning. He pulled the cover over her and tugged it around her body, while doing so he let his hand smooth with the cover and over her body. He missed her so much that it was hurting inside.
He grabbed a chair from the other side of the room and put it by the side of the bed. He sat down on it with a sigh. She was sleeping peacefully and he caught himself smiling, ‘she is so beautiful’ his whole body was overwhelmed by the feeling she gave him. There was no longer a single doubt in his mind. He loved her so much. And he wasn’t going to give up on her without a fight. He leaned back in the chair, and felt his eyelids get heavy. The need to sleep became too much, and he looked over at the empty side of the bed next to Gemma. He pushed away any thoughts that told him to resist, and got up. Walking around the bed, he watched her as she was taking deep breaths. Slipping down beside her, he lifted up the cover and crept under it, to be closer to her sleeping body. Feeling the incredible urge to feel her skin against his, he removed his t-shirt in a quick movement and wrapped his arms around her. This felt amazing. She felt amazing. He sighed and nuzzled his head into her back and felt her soft skin caress his cheek. After a few minutes of dwelling in the sensation, he drifted off to sleep.
