Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. I do not know Orlando Bloom. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Ok, I've worked long and hard on this chapter. The story will be wrapped up in 1 or 2 more chapters. I hope you all have enjoyed it and I thank you for your reviews! Without further ado.....
Jenna rushed from the waiting room. She felt like she was about to explode. She headed out the nearest exit and around the corner. When she was confident that she was alone, the tears came. She beat at the wall until her hands were bruised and sore. Jenna had watched Kellie’s life spiral out of control from the moment she returned from that fateful trip. Her friend who was so level headed had become very unbalanced. Kellie had been deeply in love with Orlando, probably from the first moment they met. Although she’d never admitted it. Jenna had seen it in her eyes. She’d also seen what losing that love had done to her. Jenna stared into the darkness and dried her tears. She knew it was now or never. If Elijah couldn’t get Orlando back here, Kellie would die. She couldn’t explain it, but the feeling was there. Orlando could save Kellie.
Jenna woke Elijah up and gave him the edited version of the night’s events.
“All I know is she’s in a coma and she may or may not wake up.” Jenna said. “He needs to come now!”
“OK, OK!” Elijah said. “He’s half way around the world so this is going to take some time.”
“Just do what you can.” Jenna said. “He just needs to know.”
“I’ll call him as soon as we hang up.” Elijah said.
“Bye.” Jenna said.
She didn’t wait for him to reply. She snapped her phone shut and headed back inside. Nothing to do now but wait.
Dom was stretched out in a chair with his head leaning back. He looked asleep, so Jenna didn’t disturb him. The waiting room had emptied out. It was a cold, ugly little room. Green vinyl chairs lined each of the three walls. In the center were upholstered blue chairs that could be pulled out to become a bed. The fourth wall consisted of a counter with a sink and a coffee pot. The floor was covered with a blue and green rug. It was obvious that countless of worried family members and friends had used this room while waiting for news. Jenna sighed and slid into a chair. She was tired, but couldn’t let her eyes close. She grabbed a magazine and began to read.
Jenna woke sometime later to Dom gently shaking her. He handed her a cup of coffee and sat down next to her. Neither spoke. They sat and stared at the floor. No words were necessary. Jenna wasn’t sure how long she sat there holding the coffee when her cell phone rang. She almost dropped it in her haste to answer the phone. “Hello!” She said flipping the phone open.
“Jenna? It’s Elijah.” Elijah said. “I got a hold of Orlando’s assistant and told her to have him call me ASAP.”
“Where’s Orlando?” Jenna asked.
“He was in the middle of a press conference.” He said. “She promised she’d have him call me right after.”
“No, Elijah that’s not good enough!” Jenna shouted. “He needs to know now!”
“I know! If I don’t hear from him soon, I’ll call again.” Elijah said.
“Call him now and keep calling until he answers the phone!” Jenna ordered.
“OK! OK! Calm down! If I have to I’ll fly to Japan myself.” Elijah said.
Jenna snapped her phone shut. She rested her face in her hands and sighed.
“No luck?” Dom asked after a minute.
“No, his assistant is answering his cell.” Jenna said.
“Don’t worry she’ll give Orli the message.” Dom said.
“I hope so.” Jenna replied.
Jenna and Dom paced the small waiting room for the better part of the day. Elijah hadn’t had any luck reaching Orlando. Finally Dr. Morgan showed up.
“There’s no change and there may not be.” He said. “You need to hope for the best and prepare yourself for the worst.”
Jenna wanted to cry again, but couldn’t. She just stood there staring at the doctor.
“Please go home and get some sleep.” He said. “ We’ll call you if there are any changes.”
With that he was gone. Jenna felt defeated. Dom put his arm around her shoulders and gently led her from the waiting room.
“Go home and get some sleep like the Doctor said.” Dom said as he helped her into her car. “There’s nothing we can do right now.”
Jenna nodded and shut the door. She drove home on auto pilot. When she got there she went straight to bed and slept the rest of the day and the entire night.
Jenna spent the next month juggling work and visits to the hospital. Elijah had tried everyday for a month to contact Orlando with no luck. His publicist kept taking the message and saying she’d have Orlando call, but he never did. Jenna figured Orlando just didn’t care and therefore wasn’t calling back. Elijah didn’t believe that about his friend for one minute. Especially the day Orlando showed up at his house.
Elijah had been getting around to go meet Jenna at the hospital. He often sat with her in Kellie’s room. They would talk and pretend Kellie would join in. She never did. There hadn’t even been so much as a twitch. Elijah knew the doctors didn’t think she’d wake up, but Jenna wasn’t about to give up, yet. He was contemplating all this when the doorbell rang. He opened the door to a smiling Orlando.
“Hey!” Was all Elijah could manage.
“Hey yourself!” Orlando said as he hugged his friend.
Elijah stepped back and let Orlando in. He closed the door and followed him into the living room.
“Where have you been?” Elijah blurted out suddenly.
“Japan, Italy, you name it I’ve been there.” Orlando said.
“Why didn’t you return any of my calls?”
“You called? When?”
“Almost everyday for the past month. Didn’t your publicist tell you?”
Orlando frowned. He didn’t understand why Robyn wouldn’t tell him Elijah called. Then it hit him.
“You’ve been calling my cell!” Orlando said.
“Well yeah, it’s the only number I had.”
“That explains why I didn’t know you called.” Orlando said. “I hired a new publicist and when the other one left she took my cell with her.”
“What? Then why didn’t she tell me?” Elijah sank to the couch.
“Well she was a little pissed at me for replacing her.” Orlando said.
He sat down next to Elijah.
“So what’s up?” Orlando asked. “Why the urgency to get a hold of me?”
“I’ll tell you in the car, come on.” Elijah said.
On the way to the hospital Elijah recanted the entire past month to Orlando. He watched as Orlando’s face changed from anger to misery.
“She hasn’t woken up?” He finally whispered.
“No, nothing. Jenna sits with her everyday.” Elijah said.
He parked the car and waited for Orlando to process everything. Finally he got out of the cart and followed Elijah into the hospital.
The ride in the elevator was quiet. Orlando was battling his emotions. He was angry at his ex-publicist and heart broken that he might have lost his chance to tell Kellie how sorry he was and how much he loved her. It was true. He had spent the last month reading and re-reading everything. He’d even gotten his mom and Samantha to find out more through the internet. He’d concluded that not only had Kate lied and deceived him, but that he had probably ruined the best relationship he’d ever had. That’s why he had headed straight to Elijah’s upon landing in LA. He had planned to talk things out with him and then talk to Kellie. He could still talk to her, but would she hear him? Was she already gone? Just a body being kept alive with machines? Orlando felt like someone was ripping his heart out. His eyes burned with unshed tears. He swallowed past the lump in his throat. He didn’t remember the walk down the hallway to Kellie’s room. Elijah stopped at a door and knocked softly. A minute later Jenna stepped out.
“Orlando! What...” Jenna could finish because she started crying.
Elijah hugged her. “It’s ok, I’ll explain everything.” He said.
Jenna nodded and tried to compose herself.
“You should know the doctors were just here. They don’t feel she’s going to wake up.” Jenna said. “They want to disconnect her from the machines by the end of the week.”
Orlando felt the dizzy. He leaned against the wall. The cold surface seemed to help. He couldn’t breath from his own sobs trying to escape. Finally he managed to whisper, “Can I see her?”
