Gradually, Gerard calmed down, and smiled when he felt her hand rest upon his knee and stroked his leg. He had to remind himself that Jade had a lot of emotion pent up and needed to confront her father; he had dealt with these feelings of hate and anger for a few weeks. Jade had lived with them for years. Glancing his rear view mirror he noted that no one else was on the road. Ahead it stretched out for miles, with no one in sight. Nothing but mountains and lakes on either side of them, he pressed a button pulling the top of the car down and mentally caressed his beautiful car. Catching Jade’s eye, he flashed her a cheeky smile and slammed his foot on the accelerator.
Jade jumped at the sudden spurt of speed, “Gerry,” she screamed, holding on to his leg tightly. “Stop it, this is way too fast.”
“It’s Fun,” Jade heard Gerry shout over the wind, he looked like a boy with a new toy. “Whhaooooooaaa” he screamed, filling the air with his laughter.
“Keep your eyes on the road, you maniac” Jade was laughing hard now and screaming in joy along with him, the wind felt great against her skin, but the joy was short-lived as she saw her father’s house loom over them. Gerard slowed down and whistled in appreciation at the size of the house.
“Is he compensating for something?” Mentally counting the windows, Gerard climbed out of the car and walked round to let Jade out.
”Pftt says you with your flashy car” Jade took his hand and stood to her feet, smoothing her skirt down.
“Yes dear, but you know I’m not compensating for anything, not the way you screamed last night.” Jade blushed and gripped his bum, pulling him into a kiss. For a second they leaned against the side of the car, oblivious to everything around them.
“Hey,” growled Gerry “watch the paintwork.” Gerard reached out for her hand, and found it moist. “Whoa girl, you’re either very horny or very scared.” Grinning he led her to the door. Jade griped his hand as if her life depended on it as they climbed the steps. Timidly, she knocked on the door and waited.
“Oh well,” she smiled, “No ones home, let’s leave.” Gerry pulled her back, sliding his arm around her small waist. “Just wait,” he soothed. Jades heart jumped when she heard footsteps approaching. Jade scowled at the butler when he opened the door, but felt guilty when he was so clearly happy to see her.
“Little Jade, how are you? I see you have brought a friend,” the butler stared at Gerard’s face, and noted his protective arm around Jade. Making a mental note to fetch a strong whiskey, he took their coats and led them to the sitting room. “I’ll just inform your father you are here.”
Gerard watched the butler disappear, and looked around the house. Sure it was magnificent, there was a few things in here he wouldn’t find himself. While the rooms were full of grand items, they lacked cosiness. Making himself at home, he flumped down on a couch and motioned for Jade to join him. Jade smiled but turned away, scanning the mantelpiece with her eyes. Photographs of the family lined it, mocking her with bad memories. Gerard walked up behind her, and his eyes fell upon Jades wedding photograph. Jade looked beautiful, and Jake looked very smart too. Her eyes told a different story though, Jade looked as miserable as sin, Jake looked depressed.
Taking her hand, Gerard kissed her cheek.
Jeff had been at his desk indulging in a quick afternoon whiskey when his butler had informed him of Jade’s arrival. Anger brewed in him, the whiskey was taking effect. That little harpy had cost him his reputation; everyone was talking about her defying her father and divorcing Jake. Not to mention the angry phone calls he had received from Jake’s father himself. Well thought Jeff, They aren’t divorced yet, ill simply have to teach her a lesson. Storming down the hall, he burst through the doors into the sitting room.
“About time you little bitch, I have something to say to you.” Jeff’s eyes met Gerard’s and he stopped dead.
Gerard glanced at the man who had destroyed Jades life, he wanted to fly at him and rip his eyeballs out. Maybe he wouldn’t have bloodlust rushing round him if Jeff hadn’t addressed Jade like that. Perhaps he would have anyway. Jeff was everything Jade had described. Around 5”8 with thinning hair, the man looked like he had seen better days. Gerard guessed he was around fifty odd. Clenching his fists, he wanted nothing more than to hit him. Feeling a hand creep around his fist, he remembered Jade’s words, and dropped his anger. She was right, what would it solve? There had to be another way he could get under this man’s skin.
Jeff stood, taking Gerard in. After a few seconds he decided he had better be careful what he said and when. This was no man to mess with. He must be 6 ft at least, with the body to match it. So this was the man responsible for the upheaval. Gerard strolled toward him, hate evident in his eyes, but a cheery smile on his face. Jeff backed up, suddenly afraid for his well-being. If Jade had told this man everything that had occurred, Jeff didn’t feel comfortable in his presence.
“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that, shall I?” There was a threat in Gerard’s voice but he held out his hand, his eyes not leaving the man in front of him. Nervously, Jeff clasped his hand and shook it. “My name is Gerard Butler and I am here to ask you if I have your permission to marry your daughter?” Gerard grinned as he watched the man’s face contort.
“How dare you,” Jeff finally stammered out, “Is this some kind of joke?”
“Not at all,” Gerard walked over the Jade and placed an arm around her. “See, I was brought up with manners, elbows off the table, always ask permission, say please and thank you.” Gerard continued walking over to Jeff, his face was inches from his “Don’t hit women, you know the usual laws of a decent society. Surely a man like you knows all these manners right?”
A trickle of sweat ran down Jeff’s forehead, he gulped loudly. Switching his view from the man in front of him, he glared at his daughter. He could feel Gerard’s eyes piercing him, and turned back.
“Gerard,” Jade held out her hand for him. Snarling, Gerard walked over and grasped it. There was no smile on his face now; his polite cheerful grin has left. Jeff felt sick. “May I have a few moments to talk to my father alone please?” Jeff could see Gerard wasn’t happy with that. “Please Gerard. I won’t be long.”
Looking from father to daughter, Gerard finally kissed Jade’s hand and walked towards the door, he stopped by the doorframe and turned to Jeff demanding his attention.
“You touch her, and I’ll kill you. Nice meeting you sir.”
Jade hid her smile at the grin Gerard shot her father before he left the room, closing the door behind him.
Gerard stood outside the door, trying to calm his beating heart. Glancing up and down the corridor, he sighed. There was no life in this house; he could hear the patter of servant’s footsteps, no laughter. Walking to a seat, he flumped himself down and stared at the door. A few minutes Jade had said, and a few minutes were all he was getting. At first sight, Gerard didn’t trust this man, he would be damned if anything happened now to sway Jade’s judgement and pull her back into the life she hated.
Jade stood facing the fire, her eyes on her wedding photo. “Do you remember my begging that morning, dad?” Jade turned slowly, cradling the photo in her arms. “I begged you not to make me marry Jake and you smiled and then….” Jade choked and let a tear fall. “No one would know that under that dress lay a cracked rib, or the red welts from your belt”.
Jeff stared at his only daughter, emotionless. It had taken a few years but he had got rid of any feelings he had for her. Standing before him now she was a pest, always complaining, always disobeying him.
“I set you up for life, Jade” Jeff spat through gritted teeth. “Nice house, plenty of money. At least I wed you to Jake he was your best friend. What more could you want?”
“Love!” Jade almost screamed. “I wanted love; instead I got hate from you. I want my own life, I want him.”
Jeff flinched at the reminder that Gerard was outside pacing the floor. “That was your problem,” Jeff circled Jade slowly, knowing it scared her. “You always wanted more,” Jeff lowered his tone, “Always a selfish bitch.”
Jade wept silently, still holding her photo. “I don’t care what you say anymore father, I want my freedom and I am taking it. As far as I’m concerned you can go and fuck yourself.”
Jade threw the photograph to the floor, delighted in the smash it made. Turning to face her father, she backed away. If looks could kill, Jade wouldn’t be standing. Fear ran through her and she turned to run for the door. Jeff caught up with her, pulling her back by her hair, he clamped one hand over her mouth.
Gerard sat, tapping his feet. The sound echoed down the long corridor. “Psst”. The noise startled him, and he glanced left and right for the person responsible. Shrugging his shoulders, he turned to face the door again, praying Jade was holding her own.
“Psst.” Gerard stood up at this second noise, and spotted hair fly behind a wall. Popping back out again, he saw an elderly lady beckoning for him to come to her. Gerard looked around him checking no one else was about, and strode over, coming to a halt in front of her. He was looking at Jade in 40 years. This was clearly her mother; she had the same cheekbones and the eyes that drew Gerard in. The lady seemed agitated and wary, looking about her, she pulled him behind the corner and looked him up and down.
“So you are him? Jade told me about you in her letters. I’m very pleased to meet you. I am Dianne.”
Gerard held out his hand and shook it. “Nice to meet you too. Jade never mentioned you to me.” The lady looked wistful. “I don’t see Jade as often as I like, we both fear the same monster who lives under this roof. I saw you two outside, you looked so happy.” A tear ran down her face, and Gerard took her arm, sitting her down he waited for her to finish.
“All I ever wanted was for her to be happy” the lady looked up at Gerard. “Promise me you will look after her. Please promise me that.”
Gerard took the woman’s frail hands in his own. “I love your daughter more than life itself. With me she will always be safe.” To reassure her, Gerard pulled her into a hug, it was a daring move but he hoped she would feel his love for Jade.
Dianne held him tightly, and knew Jade would be safe. Checking around once more ,she pulled a box out of her pocket and handed it to Gerard.
”Here” she whispered. Gerard opened the box and found a silver claddagh ring, clearly worn. “It was her grandmothers wedding ring. Jade always loved it. Jade loved her grandmother, but sadly she passed away a few years ago. Jeff never let Jade speak to her grandmother after all that happened. My mother deeply disapproved of the whole matter as you can imagine. My poor baby, she lost her freedom and her grandmother in one day. Of course, when she died a few years back, Jade attended the funeral. I begged Jeff to let her have this ring but, well you can imagine.”
Gerard held the ring tightly in his fist. “Come with us” he spoke softly. “You can stay with me and Jade, get away from him.”
“Lord no,” laughed Dianne, “What will the neighbours think? No, this is my place, this is where I ought to be. Just remind her to write, won’t you?” Gerard embraced her again and watched her vanish back down the corridor. Smiling, he stroked the ring in his hand and placed it carefully in his pocket. It was then he heard the crash of glass. Jumping to his feet her tore down the corridor.
Jade bit deeply into her father’s hand, “Get off me” she screamed. Kicking out she shoved her father off herself, and made for the door. “Gerard,” she screamed, her tears falling. Once again her father caught her and flung her to the floor, pulling his belt from round him he held it above his head.
“You think you’re so smart?” Jeff screamed, “You won’t get away with this Jade, I’ll kill you before I see you married to that welsh guy, whatever he is.”
“I’m Scottish, actually.” Jeff stopped still. His blood froze. Turning round, he came face to face with Gerard’s grinning face. Jeff barely had time to run before Gerard’s fist sent him flying. Crashing into his desk, Jeff slumped and hit the floor.
Gerard lifted Jade to her feet and held her to him. “I’m sorry baby. I’m sorry.”
“I don’t give a shit,” screamed Jade, “Hit the bastard for all I care, kill him.” Gerard held his breath as he felt Jade hitting out at him with her tiny fists.
“Why can’t he be normal? Why couldn’t he just love me? Kill him Gerard. I want him dead. You hear that dad, the next time I lay eyes on you, I pray you are in a coffin.”
Gerard led Jade to the door, “Go wait in the car honey” Jade flashed one last look of hate at her father and went to fetch their coats.
Jeff felt blood collecting in his mouth, seeing Gerard walking toward him he crawled pathetically under his desk. But Gerard flung it out the way, lifting the man off the floor he pulled him to his face. “Come on,” he screamed, “Oh, you won’t hit someone your own size? But you can hit her. Just looking at you gives me a mild distaste. You interfere with Jade again and I might just do her bidding. I would happily do time for killing you. Nothing would please me more than kicking you all around this house, but I refuse to mirror you. I pray I never turn into you”
Gerard threw the man back to the floor and walked out.
They drove home in silence. Jade didn’t ask what Gerard did when she left him, she didn’t care. Tears fell down her face as she stared out the window. As they pulled up into the driveway, she sighed, climbing out of the car before Gerard had the chance to open the door for her.
“I am sorry darling. I really thought you guys could sort this, I didn’t think he would try anything while I was there. I shouldn’t have pushed you to do it” Gerard leaned against the top of his car, looking like a lost puppy. Jade smiled and circled the car to embrace him.
“Oh my darling, how could you have? Besides I did sort it. I told him how I felt, and I left. That helps, it really helps. Seeing you hit him, I feel better. He can’t hurt me now. He’s just an old man.”
”I was so scared he had hit you again”, Gerard pushed his face into her hair, and lost himself in her embrace. “Your mother said don’t forget to write.”
“You saw my mother? How is she?” Jade was wide eyed.
“Well, I was bored traipsing around outside. I asked her to come with us but she refused. She’s well; she hopes you are happy”
“Aww, she will have such a hard time with him tonight. Your heart is too big Gerard, thank you. I can’t believe you asked her that”
Gerard kissed her softly. “The battles not won yet darling. You will be mine!”. Laughing Jade allowed herself to be lifted in the air, and hugged tightly. Gerard carried her inside.
“Ohh,” she wailed, “From one type of abuse to another. I feel certain I won’t be able to sit down tomorrow. Sexual abuse this is,” Jade laughed kissing him on neck.
“You won’t be able to sit down for a week,” Gerard growled kicking the front door shut.
