Chapter 18
As soon as the words came out of her mouth, Lynn began to cry. Brendan could only stare with his mouth wide open as did everyone else at the table. “I am having your baby, and you don’t love me!”
“You’re what?” Brendan asked.
“Don’t you ever listen? I am pregnant?”
The next thing that came out of Brendan’s mouth should have gotten him shot, but Ann didn’t have a gun. “Are you sure it’s mine?” With that, Lynn ran out of the bar, balling.
Ann shot Brendan the scariest face he had ever seen. “Nice one asshole.” When she got outside, she found Lynn curled up into a ball next to the hummer. “I don’t know if anything I say for the next little bit is going to help at all. Just know that I love you like a sister and will be there for anything you need.” Lynn got up as Ann pulled her into a hug. Ann just stood there for a while, holding Lynn in her arms and letting cry it all out. “Here are the keys. You get in the car and I will go get your stuff.”
Ann walked back to the table, and sat down. “I am going to take her back to the hotel. Mom I would like you to come with us because you have been more of a mother to her than anyone. As for you,” Ann said as she turned to Brendan, “I think it be wise for you to stay at my house. I am not sure if she could handle seeing you after what you just said.” Ann and her mother got up and went out to the car. Charline drove as Ann sat in the back with Lynn’s head in her lap, stroking her hair, trying to get her to calm down.
After Ann, Charline, and Lynn left, Brendan was still processing what Lynn had told him. The Car ride back to Ann’s house was silent. No one knew what to say. When they pulled up to the house, everyone except Gerry and Brendan went inside. “Dude,” Brendan said as he sat on the bench next to the door, “can I bum a cig? I ran out in the car.” Gerry passed him one and he lit up. “Did you know?”
“Yeah,” Gerry said as if bracing for Brendan’s reaction, though all he did was hold his head in his hands. “If it makes it any better, Lynn didn’t find out until the day we left to come out here. Also, much to Ann’s credit, she didn’t tell me. I have been around enough pregnant women, to know one when I see them.”
Brendan laughed a bit at that. “What do I do now? I am too young to be a father. But I love her too much to just leave.”
“I thought you said it was just a casual thing?”
“I did, but only because that is what I thought she wanted to hear. You told Ann didn’t you?”
“Don’t kill me.”
“No, it’s okay. I half told you because I knew you would tell Ann and then Lynn would hear about it. But what am I supposed to do now? Should I marry her?”
“I know you love her, but you don’t know here well enough to marry her. It isn’t fair to either of you or to the baby to be in a marriage that was only half assed. Honestly, I think you just need to give her some space. I don’t think you should drive back to the city with us. That is just my opinion.”
“You know that is actually a good idea. But would you call Ann and ask her what she thinks?”
“Sure.”
As Gerry was on the phone with Ann, Brendan had so many thoughts running through his head. ‘I love her, but did she ever love me? What is our relationship going to be like after the baby? Holy shit I am going to be a father.’ Right then Gerry handed the phone to him because Ann wanted to talk to him.
“Brendan,” she started, “now I want you to just listen to me. What you said earlier was a little cold, but under the circumstances, I will let it go. You’ll have to square with Lynn on that someday. She has finally stopped crying, after she threw all your shit into the living-room. We are leaving tomorrow, and I really don’t think it would be a good idea for you to be there. As much as I want you two to work this out, Lynn just needs her space.”
“Should I go back to LA?” he said as he began crying.
“I guess, I just think it is too soon for her to see you. So either my dad or I can take you to the airport.”
“Could you come get me?”
“Yes and please don’t cry I don’t know if I could take it. I will be there in a few.”
When Ann got to the house, Brendan was still outside crying. Gerry was sitting next to him. When Brendan got in the car after saying goodbye to everyone, Ann motioned to Gerry to come with her. While they were in the car, Brendan explained to Ann that the only reason he said it was a casual thing, was because he thought that is want Lynn wanted. “She said the same to me, thinking that is what you wanted to hear. I didn’t know any different until a few days ago when she found out about the baby.”
“Is she going to hate me forever?”
“No, I think she will be fin in a few days. Just give her time. If anything happens, and I think you need to be here, I will call you.” When they got to the airport, as they were saying goodbye, Brendan began to cry. When Ann went to hug him she whispered, “I know she loves you. Don’t worry, I know her better than she knows herself.” That only made Brendan cry even more. Thankfully, he was able to sleep on the plane, but he couldn’t stop thinking about Lynn and their unborn child.

Ann told Gerry on the way back to the hotel that she was going to stay with Lynn for the night. “Take my mom back to my house and just throw all my shit in a bag. Come get us around noon. Then we will stop by the house so I can say goodbye.”
“Baby,” Gerry said looking into her eyes, “if you were pregnant, you would tell me, wouldn’t you?”
“Yes I would and no I am not. Don’t worry I don’t know you well enough to want to have your babies,” she said with a smile as she kissed his forehead.
“Thanks for always making me smile.”
“Thanks for giving me a reason to smile.”
“Stop being cheesy.”
“Stop being an ass,” she said, hitting his arm.
“I will be here at noon. Give Lynn a big hug for me.”
“I will.”

The ride back to New York was anything but pleasant. Lynn vetoed any Metallica that Ann tried to play. They ended up listening to Coldplay the whole time, which was okay with Ann and Gerry. Most of the time Lynn just slept. There were times when she would cry and Ann would climb in the back and stroke her head until she fell asleep again.
When they stopped half way through the trip, they ended up getting two rooms that were right next to each other. Lynn said that she was okay by herself, but Ann insisted on keeping the doors between the rooms open.
Everything was going well until in the middle of the night, Lynn walked into Ann and Gerry’s room, and just like a kid who had a bad dream, asked to get in bed with them. Ann was more than happy to shove Gerry over and Lynn climbed in.
When they got back to the city the next night, Lynn was still in sad and depressed mode, although Ann could see something else behind everything. That night, Ann stayed up with Lynn, baking cookies and just trying to cheer her up. She could tell that part of it was working, but Lynn was still hurting on the inside.
