"What time do you work till?" Ashley asked as she pulled into the zoo's parking lot.
"Until 8," Kelly replied stretching.
"That's an hour from now. You wake me up on a Saturday morning so I can bring you to work for an hour?"
"8 tonight," she corrected.
"Oh, wow, that sucks. Is that even legal? Aren't there like child labor laws or something?"
Kelly laughed, "They offered; I took it."
Ashley shook her head, "So are you going to need a ride tonight?"
"Um, no, actually, Carrie said she'll pick me up."
"Alright," Ashley nodded, pulling to a stop in front of the gates. "Have fun smelling monkey crap all day."
"It'll be reminding me of you," Kelly replied cheekily as she quickly got out of the car before Ashley could react.

"So how much for a bag of popcorn?" someone whispered in Kelly's ear, making her jump.
"Shit, Care," Kelly laughed as she turned around.
"What? You thought I was one of the crazy monkeys coming to get you?" Carrie laughed, accepting a quick hug from the Texan.
"I'm telling you Steve has been eyeing me all day."
"Which one is Steve?"
Kelly pointed out the monkey on a high branch that was staring down at her.
"Aw, looks like he has a crush," Carrie teased, accepting the bag of popcorn Kelly offered her.
"Like a stalker crush," Kelly replied, waving her off as she tried to pay. "It's on me."
"Kelly," she frowned.
"Ok, well, technically it's on the zoo, but I doubt they're gonna miss one bag of popcorn," she grinned.
"Nerd," Carrie laughed, shaking her head.
"So, you're here a little early," Kelly commented.
"Yea, I had wanted to look around some. I haven't been to a zoo in forever."
"Yea, this one is actually really nice."
"Yea."
Kelly eyed her curiously, "Something on your mind?"
"I wanted to know if maybe...maybe we can talk?" Carrie asked nervously.
"Well, yea, of course. I get off in like ten minutes, is it ok if wait until then?"
"Yea."
"Hey, you ok?" Kelly asked, placing a gentle hand on her arm.
"Yea," she nodded, giving her a soft smile. "I'm just gonna go look around some more."

"So, I bet you've never been to a zoo after closing," Kelly smiled as they walked along the cemented path, towards the exit.
"No, this is definitely a first," Carrie replied.
"Remind me, one day I'm gonna give you the full tour."
"Sounds fun," she nodded as they got into her car. "So, I was thinking..."
"About?"
"Instead of staying at your house tonight, maybe we can stay at mine?"
"Sure," Kelly shrugged. "Whatever you want's fine."
"There's just...there's something I need to tell you first."
"Ok," Kelly nodded, turning in her seat to face her. "Shoot."
"I lied," Carrie said carefully.
"About?"
"Why we came here. We didn't move here because of my dad's job. Well, actually, technically we kinda did, but not for the reason I probably led you to believe--" she was cut off by Kelly placing a soft hand on her arm.
"Care, just relax. Whatever it is, you can tell me."
"My dad worked in the paper mill when we were in Oklahoma," Carrie explained, her eye's not meeting Kelly's. "One day there was an accident in the factory where he worked. A machine he was working on...I don't know what exactly happened, but I guess it broke, and he...he got pinned beneath it."
Kelly slid her hand into Carrie's as she paused for a moment.
"It crushed his spine," she continued, silent tears falling down her cheeks. "He--he can't walk; he's in a wheelchair."
"Is that why y'all moved down here?" Kelly asked gently.
"Yea, um, we had to take the company to court. And I mean, we're not like those people out there who sue somebody for the stupidest things. There were tons of doctor bills, and I mean, my dad can't work, so the only income we have is my mom, and she's a teacher, so we had to do it."
"It's ok," she soothed, rubbing her thumb across her hand.
"The people in our town didn't see it that way, though," Carrie shook her head. "I mean, it's a small town, the paper mill was one of the top employers. They thought we had no loyalty. So, when my dad's doctor recommended a top physical therapist over here, my parents decided it was best if we moved, you know? Started over. We sold our old house and used that and some of the money from the suit to buy us a house down here, that way there's no house note or anything to worry about. My mom just got a job at an elementary school, and the pay is a lot better than it was in Oklahoma. So, yea. That's the truth."
"That's why you didn't want me to go to your house?"
"I guess I was a little ashamed," she nodded. "Yea."
"Carrie, there's nothing to be ashamed of," Kelly assured her. "I mean, have you seen my family? Hun, your's is like the Cleavers compared to us."
Carrie gave a soft laugh as she felt Kelly's hand brush against her cheek, wiping a tear away.
"I am glad you told me, though."
"Me too," Carrie replied. "I just...I'm not ready for other people to know just yet."
"I understand," Kelly nodded. "You still want to go over to your place tonight? Cause I mean, we don't have to if you aren't ready."
"No, it's fine, I want to."

Kelly joined Carrie at the front of her car after they had pulled into her driveway. She watched as the taller blonde bit her bottom lip nervously.
"Carrie?"
Carrie turned to her, and Kelly pulled her into a warm hug.
"It's ok," Kelly assured her. "I swear I'm not judging you or your family. Just relax."
Carrie nodded as she pulled away.
Kelly followed as Carrie turned, walking up the driveway to the front door.
Carrie opened it, stepping aside to let Kelly in first before following her, closing the door behind them. "Mom! I'm home!"
"In the kitchen!" her mom replied.
"As always," Carrie forced a joke.
"Hey, that is not something I'd be complaining about," Kelly smiled, following her into the large kitchen where a sweet older lady with blonde hair and glasses was pulling out a pan of brownies from the oven. "Oh, wow, I love your mom," Kelly grinned, walking over to her, and looking into the pan. "You made these from scratch?"
"Yes," Carrie's mom nodded with an amused smile as she watched the Texan. "But you need to wait until they're cooled off or you'll get a stomach ache."
Kelly nodded, looking into the pan forlornly.
"Mom, this is Kelly," Carrie laughed. "She can be a bit shy at times as you can tell."
"It's nice to meet you Kelly," Carrie's mom greeted, holding out her hand.
"You too Mrs. Underwood," Kelly grinned, shaking it.
"Please, call me Carole."
"My mom would kill me," Kelly shook her head, looking around. "Um, where's y'alls restroom?"
"There's one right down that hall, on your left," Carole pointed.
Kelly smiled, "Thanks."
Carrie grinned, watching her walk away.
"So, that's the girl I've been hearing about?" Carole asked, turning to her daughter with a curious expression.
"That's her."
"She's definitely something else. Like a little firecracker."
"Enthusiasm and energy are definitely not things she's lacking," Carrie nodded in agreement, sitting at the island in the middle of the kitchen.
"She does seem a bit rough around the edges, though."
"Mom," Carrie rolled her eyes. "She's sweet as heck."
"What do her parents do?"
"Her mom's a teacher at the elementary school, just like you."
"And her father?"
"Well, actually her real father is out in California. Her mom's remarried, though I'm not exactly sure what her stepdad does. I want to say something in construction, maybe."
"Ah," Carole nodded, as if that explained it.
"Mom," Carrie fussed. "Come on, now. Give her a chance. She's been nothing but nice to me. I seriously think you'll like her."
"I just want to make sure you're hanging out with the right kind of people, sweetie that's all."
Carrie sighed, hating to have to use the popularity card, but knowing it was probably the only way for her mom to give Kelly a chance, "She's the most popular girl in school mom. I think that qualifies her for the right kind of people category."
"She is?" Carole asked, looking to where Kelly had walked away from a few moments before.
"Yes, mom."
"What about the cheerleading squad?" Carole suggested. "Didn't we talk about you joining that?"
"No, mom. You did. I want to try out for the softball team over here, and Kelly said they already had auditions for the spring musical, but she was going to talk to the choir director for me and see if she can get me a backup spot, if not, I'll just work on props and stuff."
"Are you sure that's what you want to do?"
"Yes."
Carole frowned but nodded as she kissed the top of her daughter's head, "Alright then, as long as your happy."
