It hurt. It hurt pretty badly, actually. And the pain made things confusing. Like a fractured mirror, each piece had an image, but making them fit to a whole again was impossible. If I got too close to examine them they scattered and blurred. I was getting angry, which only made the pain worse, but I wanted to examine one of the pieces! Why couldn’t I get near them? Argh! Desperately I reached out with both hands. I caught a piece, feeling the pain increase, and realized I’d cut both my hands on the shard, but I forced myself to look at it. There was a face, male, and very handsome. I felt… warmth when I looked at him. So obviously I must care for him.
The pain was persistent, but now there were odd noises all around me. They were making the pain worse. Someone had better find a way to stop the noises. I couldn’t do it; I was trying to fix that broken mirror with the shattered images. For some reason I felt that the mirror was very important, and I had to fix it. I had to.
But those noises were irritating. Annoying, really.
“Ungh…”
“She’s waking up!”
“Thank Kami-sama!”
“I’ll go tell the doctor.”
Footsteps, and then a voice. “Little Suji-chan, you scared us to death. Can you open your eyes?” That voice was comforting, and warm. Warm, like the face in the shard that I clung to. “C’mon, girl, open your eyes. Let me see those pretty eyes of yours!”
“Mmm…” I frowned. My eyes were shut? I concentrated to open them, wanting to see if it really was the same face. Bright lights made me blink several times and squint, but slowly… oh so slowly, things started to come into focus.
“There we go!” He smiled, and I smiled back because it was the same face as in the piece of mirror I’d held. “Good girl,” he beamed.
His smile and warm face were replaced by an older one, one who frowned and began to wave fingers in front of my face and flash a light in my eyes, making me hiss at the sudden brightness. “Can you tell me your name?”
Of course I could tell him my name! I opened my mouth to do so, and croaked it out. Embarrassed at the sound of my voice I tried to moisten my lips, but my tongue was dry too. A drink of water would help that. “Water…”
“In a moment, please. Do you know where you are?”
I looked around, seeing pale walls, and a big window with blue sky behind it. “No.” I was still looking around when he told me that I was at the hospital. I’d had a fall, and hit my head. It had taken only 5 stitches to close it, but I’d been unconscious for a while, and they were now going to check me to see if all was well. Well, that explained the pain in my head. But what about the broken mirror with all the pieces that had images on them? And where was that warm face I found so comforting?
“Do you know this person’s name?” the doctor continued, stepping aside. “Or this person’s name?”
I blinked, looking from him to where he motioned. There was that comfortingly warm face. The other person was a stranger to me. “Of course I…” A frown started. How come I didn’t know the name of the person with that warm comforting face? If I didn’t know him how could he be in that fractured mirror, and feel so warm and comforting?
“Suji?” the girl moved forward, her hands clasped together so tightly the fingers were white. “You remember me, don’t you?”
I turned my gaze towards her. She was standing beside the one with the warm face. I let my gaze pass over her features, and felt a tug at my mind. There was a sense of familiarity and love when I looked at her. I smiled, knowing that I cared for this girl, but I didn’t know her name. It didn’t stop the sense of wanting to run to her for a hug. “Are you my sister?”
Her bottom lip quivered, and her dark eyes moistened. “In a way. We grew up together, BFFs, and always said we were soul sisters.”
That explained it.
She forced a smile. “I’m Saika. Saika?” she questioned me, hoping it would jar something in my memory. When it didn’t she turned to the man beside her, the one with the warm face. “I’m going out there to kill Die, okay?” Twirling she hurried out of the room.
He watched her go, and then neared the bed. “Little Suji-chan…” Carefully he sat on the edge of the bed, and let his dark eyes pass over my face. “You don’t remember my name, do you?”
No, I didn’t. Which was sad because I felt safe and warm with him near. Slowly I reached up and touched his jaw. He didn’t stop me. I shifted to reach better and he lowered some to make it easier for me. My fingers skimmed over tiny little scars, over the shape of his cheek and brow, and then moved his dark hair from his face. Hair that was soft and warm. I smiled at him. I liked him, even if I couldn’t recall his name. Grabbing onto his shoulder I pulled myself up into him, burying my face in his neck and clinging to him. He was warm all over, and smelled nice… familiar.
Kyo opened the door, and arched a brow. “What are you doing?”
Kaoru couldn’t move, but he did put his arms up to show the blond he wasn’t doing anything. “Suji-chan, you remember Kyo? He’s kinda annoying and a pain in the ass, and worth forgetting, but…”
“Watch it,” Kyo growled low. He moved into the room, arching a brow as I peered at him over the warm shoulder I’d snuggled into. “You really don’t remember any of us, Suji-chan?”
Behind him came an older couple. Seeing them made glowing warmth erupt in my chest. My parents, maybe? That female came back, and with her was a thin male with long dark blond hair. More warmth. It was spreading inside me, making me feel safe.
Shinya smiled softly. “Suji?” One graceful hand lifted to his chest. “I’m Shinya. Remember?”
Saika motioned to him. “My twin brother. The three of us were inseparable growing up. And these are my parents. My brother Kyo,” she motioned to the blond, and then to the one I was hugging. “And that’s Kaoru you’re hugging.”
Kaoru. Okay. I smiled at them.
“Bring in Totchi,” Kaoru said over his shoulder.
Kyo went to the door, opened it, and waved to someone. A tall male with shoulder length dark hair entered. Automatically his eyes found me, he stiffened, but he didn’t speak right away. Finally he took a few steps nearer. “I’m Toshiya. Remember?”
My hands tightened on Kaoru’s shoulders, and as I looked at the latest newcomer a throb started in my temples. The door opened, and a redhead entered. “Dammit, I can’t just stand out there alone without…”
I hissed as pain stabbed into my temples, my nails digging into Kaoru. A whimper tore from me. Kyo rushed to get Toshiya and Die out of the room. “Don’t argue, just get out!” He shut the door.
Saika ran forward, but stopped when Kaoru lay me down. I was out cold. “What’s going on?”
…………………
“Basically, if I understand the situation correctly, she’d been suffering undue stress before the accident.”
“That’s an understatement,” Shinya snorted.
Die stood at one side of the room, face tense and hands fisted. On the other side Toshiya lounged almost negligently, but it was a deceiving pose. His face was set hard, and his eyes were narrowed.
“Will she get her memory back?” Mama worriedly asked.
The doctor nodded. “It will return. The best you can do is let her take it slow. Don’t force it.” He glanced at Toshiya and Die. “That means very limited exposure to stressors.”
Kyo held a hand up to halt Die who’d opened his mouth to retort. “We’ll make sure of that.”
The doctor eyed Kaoru. “She seemed to take to you, Kaoru-san. Spend more time with her, show her familiar places and things, and gently encourage her to remember.” He glanced at the others. “Bring her back in a week, and we’ll see how she’s doing.”
Toshiya finally spoke. “How long could it go like this?”
The doctor looked at him, and sighed heavily. “Could be days or weeks or…”
“Months?” Mama whispered, startled by that.
“Even years,” the doctor sadly replied. “I don’t think it was the accident as much as it was the stress from before. The hit could induce mild memory loss, but if she was having difficulties dealing with something very stressful her mind could be purposely keeping that locked away to protect her.”
“Self-preservation,” Kyo nodded. “That makes sense.”
“It’s important, if you ever want her to remember again, to keep that stress away.” His voice had grown firm, he shut the file that was on his desk, and sat back. Basically, the conversation was over.
