Disclaimer: This story is a work of fiction. I do not profit monetarily from this work. I don't know Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. |
I'm glad you guys liked the first half of this chapter so much. Hope this one is as good. I needed a break in between schoolwork, so I thought it was fun anyway j/k. Really though I hope it goes over well since you all have gotten into the more descriptive chapters.
pt 2
Ashley stared at Kelly through the reflection of her bedroom mirror and wondered if she needed to get her hearing checked. “Did you really just say that you’re taking Carrie back home after the shows?” Ashley couldn’t believe that Kelly thought it was a good idea to take Carrie home. She had hoped Kelly’s crush on Carrie would diminish with time, or that Carrie would avoid doing stupid things like going to Texas with her best friend.
“I did, and she is.” Kelly didn’t want to anger Ashley, but she didn’t like the tone of voice her friend had used. She knew it kind of looked bad to Ashley that she had invited Carrie to Texas. However, Ashley was supposed to be friends with Carrie now. “Is it so hard to believe that she’d want to spend some time with me at home?” When Ashley continued to stare at her like she was an idiot, Kelly headed for the door of Ashley’s room.
“Kelly, come on, you know this isn't going to end the way you want it to.” Ashley turned away from her mirror since Kelly had walked out of the area she could see in the surface. She didn’t know what was going on with Kelly. They had been getting dressed for the dinner with everyone, and then the next moment Kelly had blurted out the part about the trip. “Hold it right there, Kelly. What are you thinking?”
Kelly tried to inch her way to the doorway of Ashley’s room, but one look from her best friend, and she stopped. “I think that I want Carrie to come to Texas with me?” Kelly looked at any other point in the room other that her friend. She really wished she were outside with Jason and Carrie. “I want to spend time with her and I want to go home. It seemed like a no brainer to me.” Kelly shrugged her shoulders and chanced a look at Ashley. “Okay, don’t get angry, this is why I didn’t tell you before now. You can’t be angry, it’s my life.”
Ashley shook her head as she tried to make sense of Kelly’s thoughts. “You can’t spring this on me the night before we leave for your shows. You waited to tell me because you know I’m going to L.A. after the concerts. You know it just shows that you know this is a bad idea because you couldn’t tell me.” She didn’t want Kelly to get hurt. She knew that no matter what happened in Texas, Kelly would be hurt. “I can’t believe you-”
Kelly interrupted Ashley; she didn’t want to hear about how she was making a mistake. “No. I didn’t tell you because the last time you got upset with Carrie you bitched her out, and she doesn’t deserve it now either.” Kelly crossed some of the distance between them and stood in front of Ashley. “Inviting Carrie to come home with me isn’t a bad idea. You don’t know her like I do.”
Ashley should have known something was up the minute Kelly had asked for her help picking out jewelry once Carrie had arrived. “You’re right I don’t know her like you do, but I do know you. Kelly, you have such a huge crush on her you can’t even see that this is going to end up with you getting hurt, or you becoming even more-” Ashley quit before she could say something she couldn’t take back. “You know she’s straight. If something does happen, it’s not going to mean anything.”
Kelly stared at Ashley and thought about how glad she was that she had insisted that Carrie go outside with Jason. Carrie had wanted them to tell Ashley together. “You are so wrong about her. You’re wrong, Ashley.” Kelly grabbed her friend’s hand when the other girl tried to walk away. “Don’t say all of that and then walk away. Why can’t you trust me about this?” Kelly wanted to tell Ashley about her and Carrie, it was part of the reason she had asked Carrie to wait with Jason, but she wouldn’t tell her best friend now, not when it was so clear that Ashley didn’t like Carrie.
****
Jason sat down with Carrie on the porch steps while he sipped from his glass of beer. “This is good. Thanks for bringing it with you tonight. I think Ashley and Kelly bought some weird ass wine or something since this is supposed to be like a dinner party.” Kelly and Ashley had been running around all day preparing for the dinner. He was grateful Carrie had come over early.
Carrie laughed at Jason’s joke. “Yeah, I thought this was going to be a quiet thing. Who knew it was going to turn into this huge mess.” She drank her beer as she tried not to think about how Kelly was upstairs telling Ashley about the trip; or how Matt, Diana, Tommy and Hector were gonna show up for dinner. “At least we can drink since they’re in there.”
Jason smiled at Carrie’s reasoning, although he was sure that Carrie knew Kelly planned to tell Ashley about the couple’s plans. “So… you ever try to make your own beer? I mean if I had known it was gonna taste this good, I’d totally set something back up at home.” He was happy for Kelly that Carrie wanted to come back to Texas with them. He was even happier though that Kelly had come to him about her and Carrie and told him since he was in charge of getting them back home. Jason was also happy for Carrie because she was acting more like a buddy with him.
Carrie chuckled and shook her head. “I’m sure Frank will be thrilled to hear that his beer got someone else to consider brewing too. I just don’t have the time for that, plus, there’s all the cleaning. He lets it ferment twice; makes it taste better. I don’t have the patience for that.” Carrie sipped her beer as Jason laughed. She’d had her friend send down some bottles of his home brewed beer since Jason had been so cool about her coming to Texas. Carrie leaned back against the wall and smiled at Jason. “We should mail some of these to the house in Texas.”
“Yeah!” Jason grinned when Carrie snickered at his enthusiastic reply. “Let’s not tell Kelly or Ashley though. They’d tease us for weeks if we did.”
****
Ashley took a step back from Kelly. She wasn’t trying to walk out; Kelly had been the one who tried to leave. She had ignored the way Kelly went on about Carrie, but she couldn't hold back any longer. “I do trust you, and I trust Carrie. It isn’t about trust at all, Kelly. This about how you’re setting yourself up to get hurt.” Ashley let out a frustrated sigh when Kelly stared at her incredulously. “Kelly, if there was something between you two it would have happened by now. She knows that you like her, so for this whole trip thing to come up and for her to agree…”
Kelly wanted to tell Ashley to shut up; she wanted Ashley to believe her, although she could tell the fight would only get worse if she told Ashley that she was with Carrie. “What’s the difference if Carrie comes along? You travel with me all the time. You’ve stayed at my place. Fuck, Ashley, you practically live in all of my houses!”
“It’s different because you don’t like me like you like Carrie!” Ashley stopped yelling and lowered her voice. “It’s different because I’m not going on trips with you to indulge in a little curiosity. Kelly, you’re my best friend and I love you, but Carrie knows how you feel about her. You know she does if even Jason sees it.” Ashley hated the expression on Kelly’s face. She wanted to run downstairs and punch Carrie for apparently deciding to experiment with Kelly. But mainly, she wanted to hug Kelly and apologize for saying the truth so bluntly.
Kelly took a deep breath and turned her back to Ashley. She seriously didn’t understand how Ashley could think that Carrie would be that cruel to her. She considered just walking out of the room and forgetting about the party altogether. “God, you just,” Kelly stopped when Ashley touched her arm. “I can’t talk to you. I don’t even want to talk to you right now.” She pulled away again when Ashley tried to hug her. She wanted to cry because even if she told Ashley everything right now, her friend would still think that Carrie was using her.
Ashley reluctantly let her hands rest at her sides. She didn’t know what to do, or how to make her words any less harsh. “I’m only trying to look out for you. Yes, I’ve become friends with her, but you’re my best friend. Don’t ask me to not say anything when I see that you’re going to get hurt by this. I don’t know why you’re defending her when it’s easy to see that she’s only going because she wants to find out what it’s like, because she knows you won’t tell.” Ashley stopped before she even got into the other reason why Kelly was so attached to Carrie. The last time she had said that Kelly was into Carrie because the blonde was straight, so that Kelly wouldn’t have to face actually being in a relationship with someone, Kelly had given her the silent treatment for a week. She really hoped that it wasn’t because of the second thing.
Kelly crossed her arms over her chest and tried to forget all the horrible things Ashley had said about Carrie. She couldn’t go back downstairs upset. She had told Carrie that she would handle Ashley, and she had told her friend. She had done what she had set out to do, so she just needed a few minutes to put the fight behind her. Kelly started to walk away once she felt calm enough, but Ashley grabbed her arm. “Let go of me. Don’t even talk. You should have just told me to have a good trip.” Kelly jerked her arm away from Ashley and walked to the doorway. “You should trust me. Obviously you don’t trust my judgment though, so stay up here if you can’t get through dinner without letting everyone else know that my best friend thinks I’m some stupid girl who can’t be trusted to know what’s good for her.”
****
Carrie took a big pull of her beer as she looked over at Jason. They had already planned how they would mail the beer to the house in Texas without Kelly knowing; they were just sitting on the porch in companionable silence. She had to ask how Jason felt though; she wanted to know for her own peace of mind. “So, uh, you cool with me going home with y’all?”
Jason remained silent in his slight astonishment that Carrie had sort of mentioned her relationship with his sister. He grinned when he realized he hadn’t imagined the question. “Yeah, you don’t even have to ask.” Jason wanted to laugh when he saw Carrie visibly relax because of his words. He wouldn’t laugh since he thought it was good that she had started to talk about her and Kelly.
“Good, because I’d understand if you didn’t want me to.” Carrie placed her beer on the porch, and then she glanced at Jason. “I’d get it if you were tired of me being around. I’m sure you had some plans for you and Kelly.” She didn’t know what to think when Jason laughed.
“I see her everyday, Carrie.” Jason cut off his chuckles with a sip of his beer. “I’m fine with you coming. If anything, I should be asking if you want me to plan some stuff for all of us since Kelly’s usually at your place.” He stopped kidding when Carrie grinned. “Honestly though?”
Carrie bit the inside of her lip even as she nodded for Jason to continue. It was one thing for Jason to like her and Kelly being together, but like Jason had said, they mostly hung out at her house. She didn’t know if his feelings might change once they got to Jason and Kelly's home.
“I’m happy for you and Kel. I know there’s been some things that had to get worked out.” Jason didn’t want to make it seem like he was angry with Carrie for her taking so long to become use to the idea of being gay; especially since he thought his sister had pulled some dumbass moves in his opinion when she should have helped Carrie. “I’m glad for the both of you that it’s all worked out and that you guys are doing the googly eyed thing.”
Carrie didn’t like that description of their feelings; it made it seem like they were starry eyed or something. “Well, isn’t that how people usually act when everything’s new?” Carrie pouted a little and picked her beer back up to have a sip. She did not make lovey dovey faces over Kelly. She was too cool to do something like that, and so was Kelly. “I don’t make eyes at her.”
Jason covered up his grin with his glass. He thought Carrie was much better suited for Kelly than any of his sister’s past boyfriends; the girl was tough without being a jerk or a bitch. He took a drink of his beer and then cleared his throat. “No, you’re not obvious, and neither is Kelly. I’m her brother though, so I notice when she really likes someone. She’s usually not like this.”
Carrie was confused by Jason’s words. She didn’t see what was so different about their relationship. “You mean because we’ve both been relatively free to spend time with each other?” She stared at Jason and thought about how if she had become friends with Kelly while she had been touring, she might never have gotten to the point where she realized that her feelings were more than just friendship.
Jason debated if he should answer Carrie; he knew Kelly would be upset if he did. On the other hand, he thought Carrie needed to hear because he was sure Kelly hadn't mentioned anything. “She’s not the kind of girl that has to be with someone. She doesn’t spend every night with someone just because she can. Kelly’s like… if you’re there, you’re there, if not, then that’s all right too. She really likes you, Carrie. That’s why it doesn’t bother me that you’re coming too.”
Carrie thought back on how nervous Kelly had been when the pop singer had asked her to go to Texas, and how Kelly had said she wanted her to see the other side of Kelly’s life. Carrie looked down at her drink as she thought of the implications of Jason’s words. She thought about how Kelly had told the people closest to the older girl, and she couldn’t even tell her best friends. “It means a lot to me that you think Kelly and I-” Carrie turned her head away when a car pulled into the driveway. She watched Matt park the car for a moment before she stood up and grabbed her beer. “I’m going to go check on Kelly.”
Jason got up quickly; he was sure Kelly and Ashley had gotten into another fight, and he didn’t want Carrie to go in and get drawn into the middle. “Naw, I got it. You stay here with your friends while I check on them.” He walked to the door, but he turned back and waved at Matt and Diana as they walked up to the house. Jason smiled at Carrie and then went into the house. With any luck, he could get the girls sorted out before the remainder of their guests arrived for dinner.
Ashley only let herself think about the things she had to get ready for dinner as she walked down the stairs. She didn’t want to think about how Kelly was most likely crying alone, or how Kelly didn’t want to see her. Ashley wondered if she could talk to Carrie. They were friends. She could talk to the blonde to see if Kelly had misinterpreted the country singer's intent by agreeing to go home with Kelly. Ashley reached the bottom of the staircase and looked around for Carrie, and in the process, she nearly ran into Jason. “Hey. Where’s Carrie?”
Jason took a step back and looked Ashley over. The girl looked upset. Jason shook his head and craned his neck a bit to see if Kelly was on the steps also. “I don’t think you should talk to Carrie. Kelly told you about the trip didn’t she?”
Ashley knew there was no sense in lying. Kelly would talk to Jason or Carrie at some point, so Jason would end up hearing about the fight. “Yeah, she did tell me. I need to talk to Carrie about this. They should not be- this is such a bad idea, Jason.” She didn't know why she was explaining why it was wrong to Jason; Jason thought Kelly and Carrie were romantically involved. Ashley wanted to hear that she had done the right thing when she had argued with Kelly.
Jason moved forward so that Ashley couldn’t exit the stairs. He did not want to have to get into a fight with Matt if Ashley tried to go outside and start something with Carrie. “It doesn’t matter what you think, Ashley. They want to do this, and that’s all that matters. Let’s go to the kitchen and check on dinner?” He knew it wasn’t a great distraction, but it was all he had at the moment.
Ashley reminded herself that Jason thought Kelly and Carrie were a couple, and really he wasn’t being an ass to her; he just thought that he was doing the right thing by Kelly. “Jason, despite what you think, this trip is only going to hurt Kelly.” She repeated to herself that Jason was a good brother, even if she did want to slap him, when Jason reached out for her arm and drank his beer; as if she was crazy and he was used to her being angry with people. Ashley angrily pushed by Jason. “Guess drinking out of a glass goes along with this new chivalrous attitude of yours.”
Carrie froze just inside the doorway with Matt, Diana, Tommy and Hector when she heard Ashley’s bitchy comment. She couldn’t remember why she had wanted to come into the house now that she knew Ashley was pissed. If Ashley couldn’t support Kelly, then she didn’t know how Matt would ever get behind the idea of her and Kelly.
Jason turned around and watched Ashley walk away. “Hey, I drink from a glass all the time!” He was mildly surprised when Ashley turned around and looked at him, though once he saw her unimpressed expression, he continued. “It’s home brewed, so you don’t drink it from the bottle because of the sediment that can end up in the bottle.” Jason would have felt bad about showing off; he didn’t though because he would bet his sister was upstairs crying over how Ashley had reacted.
“Whatever, Jase.” Ashley already felt bad for taking her anger out on Jason. She headed for the kitchen once more, although she nearly stopped when she saw Carrie in the doorway with the two couples. She looked at Carrie for a second, and then she started for the kitchen again. She didn’t want to embarrass Carrie in front of everyone. “Find out what everyone wants to drink.”
Carrie didn’t move, much less breathe, until Ashley was in the next room. She was not about to go to the kitchen by herself, not even to get her friends drinks. Carrie walked over to Jason without a glance back at her friends; she didn’t have an answer to explain why she had stopped. “Where’s Kel?”
Jason directed his gaze towards the staircase to answer Carrie without verbally replying. “Hey guys, I hope you like wine. Kelly and Ashley were driving me nuts trying to pick something that went with dinner. I think I ended up going to five different stores.” He walked over to the group by the door and ushered them to the living room to give Carrie the chance to head upstairs. “Matt, my man, I know you’ll appreciate the beer Carrie brought with her. It’s your friend Frank’s.”
Matt laughed now that he finally got what the other man had been talking about when they first walked into the house. “Yeah!” He grinned at Diana. They’d had a fun trip up at Frank’s place back when his friend had first started his hobby. “If you’re willing to share, then I would take one or three instead of some wine.”
Jason laughed and casually turned his head towards the stairs to see if Carrie had taken advantage of his diversion. With a smile, he took the remaining requests before he went to the kitchen to tell Ashley. The girls in his life were killing him with their drama, but he knew it was worth it so long as they eventually got past their problems.
****
Carrie knocked on the door to Kelly’s room and waited for a reply of some kind. If it were her who’d had a fight with Matt, she wouldn’t want anyone to come into her room and see her cry. She had an urge to go back downstairs to yell at Ashley, although she knew that no one wanted another fight. Carrie refused to think about the tiny fact that Ashley was intimidating because the girl was Kelly’s best friend. She would so yell at Ashley if it wouldn’t upset Kelly.
“I don’t want to talk, Jason!” Kelly was sure that her brother had come to check on her. She didn’t want to deal with him; she still had to figure out what to tell Carrie. When the knocking on her door started again, she got up from her bed and opened the door quickly so Jason would stop with the annoying knocking. Kelly shut her mouth when she saw that it was Carrie in the hallway. She left the door open and walked back to her bed. “At least you managed to avoid Ashley.”
Carrie raised an eyebrow at Kelly’s statement, though she chose to enter the bedroom and take a seat next to Kelly on the bed. “She’s in the kitchen, probably denting innocent pans.” Carrie wondered what she should do for Kelly. Guys were pretty easy to console. She didn’t think Kelly needed her to trash Ashley or compliment Kelly. “Want me to beat her up for you?” Carrie didn’t care if it was the appropriate response or not, she had decided it was the right answer.
Kelly rubbed her forehead and thought about how Carrie just might do such a thing if she had told Ashley about them. As it was, she was pretty sure Carrie would make it a point to talk to Ashley if she told the younger girl some of the things Ashley had said. “No, I don’t want you to beat her up. She,” Kelly sighed and took a moment to straighten out her thoughts before she spoke. “She’s angry that you’re coming with me. I didn’t even want to tell her about us because she reacted so badly.” Kelly shut her mouth because she hadn’t meant to tell Carrie about telling Ashley.
Carrie stared at Kelly’s knees and tried to think of what she was supposed to do now. If they were at her house, she would hold Kelly while the other girl talked out the fight. She ignored the part of her that was relieved that Kelly hadn’t told Ashley. “Can I say that I’m glad you didn’t tell her? She probably would have called the cops and had me arrested for trespassing or something.” Carrie moved in and put her arm around Kelly’s shoulders when the shorter girl weakly chuckled. “I’m sorry she has such a problem with us, Kel.” Carrie quietly watched as Kelly looked at her with a questioning gaze. She so wanted to go downstairs and curse Ashley out for disappointing Kelly.
“You don’t mind that I didn’t tell her, or that I wanted to tell her?” Kelly had wanted to tell Ashley so Carrie could feel at ease about them. If Ashley could be on their side, she was sure Carrie would feel better about telling people. “I know you said that you weren’t ready to, but-”
Carrie didn’t want Kelly to have to admit that it meant a lot to the brunette that Ashley know about them; it would only add insult to injury. “I wish she had been ready to hear it. I wouldn’t stop you from telling her.” Carrie wouldn’t have kept Kelly from telling Ashley; she might have made sure she wasn’t in the same building though since she would have cried or hit Ashley for reacting badly.
Kelly leaned against Carrie and wrapped an arm around the blonde’s waist. “Ashley sucks.”
Carrie let her head rest on top of Kelly's while she brought her free arm up and held Kelly. “I’m sorry.”
Kelly hated feeling like Ashley was against her, so she held onto Carrie tightly. “I just wanted to tell her how happy we are.” She wasn’t about to bring up that she wanted to yell at Ashley again for not liking Carrie. She also didn’t want to think about how if she had told Ashley about her and Carrie, Ashley most likely would have started in on how she was avoiding a serious relationship. “You know that this isn’t something I’m doing to avoid getting hurt, right? I,” Kelly swallowed back the tears that somehow managed to come back. “You know how I feel about you and me?”
Carrie didn’t know what the hell Kelly was talking about by getting hurt, however, she knew that Kelly cared about her a lot. “I do. You know I do.” She pulled back a little and looked at Kelly while she spoke. “I feel the same way. It doesn’t matter what she thinks or when you tell her.” She bent down and brushed a chaste kiss against Kelly’s lips. “Don’t let her get you down. We’ve got a ton of people downstairs that want to hang with us before your concerts, and don’t forget about our trip. We’re not going to have to think about this for like a week.”
Kelly smiled a little when Carrie broke their stare to hug her again. She hadn’t doubted Carrie, though it was nice to hear that Carrie understood why she hadn’t told Ashley. She didn’t want to go out and have to pretend for everyone that she and Ashley were fine, and that there wasn’t anything between her and Carrie. She let herself relax into Carrie’s embrace. Kelly would much rather stay in Carrie’s arms, but she knew that they had to go back soon. After what felt like a few minutes, Kelly tilted her a bit to see more of Carrie’s expression. “I would ask if we could stay up here, but we can’t leave Jason down there.”
Carrie thought the dinner would go on without them, although she thought that it would be wrong of them to leave Jason to answer questions and try to keep Ashley from acting out. “I don’t know, Kel. Ashley snapped at him, and he had her right back without any hesitation.” Carrie smiled when she felt Kelly laugh. She would be so happy when they were away from Ashley and the others. “Come on; before I decide to fly some family out and tell them that you’re the one sleeping with me every night.” Carrie helped Kelly up, though she had to lean away when Kelly swatted her for her joke. “What? They’d be a whole lot easier to handle than Ashley.”
Kelly gave Carrie a look and then tried to playfully hit the blonde for the second remark. It would have been so much more cathartic for her to go write about her feelings, or have Carrie hold her for the rest of the night; but Carrie’s attitude and teasing had cheered her up a little. “You try it, and I will tell Jason that you’re the one always moving things forward physically.” Kelly took Carrie’s hand in her own and grinned. “I’d like to watch you try to outrun my brother.”
Carrie lightly hip checked Kelly. “Whatever, your brother loves me.”
“Cuz you’re his beer pimp.” Kelly giggled and dropped Carrie’s hand.
“Oh please!” Carrie moved and grabbed Kelly around the hips before the older girl could run away. She smirked as Kelly pretended to try to get free. “I’m like irresistible to Clarksons.”
Kelly just smiled at Carrie’s claim. A week ago Carrie would not have made such a strong statement about Jason. “Or maybe you just like me and him enough to think so?” She had another joke, but Carrie stopped her with a kiss. Kelly backed off with a smile. “Lead on. I, so, want to get this dinner over with so we can go back to your place.”
